Categorization

Adding "Motorcycle manufacturers" to articles which are already in a subcategory of that is not constructive. I've undone a couple of these but you know which ones you've done and which therefore need attention. GraemeLeggett 13:32, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao! I reverted your edit on Franco Uncini as the format for biographies should be: "Attilio Stefano Funel (born on july 7, 1975) is an Italian unlucky engineer and writer. He was born in Rome etc.". Check Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Good work! --Attilios 13:27, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The convention is that, if Italian, Poland is specified, the birthplace is automatically in Italy, etc. The use of hyperlinks allows Wikipedia to remove redundant specifications which are present in other Encyclopedias. Bye! --Attilios 13:39, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Sorry for going a bit overboard. Thanks for taking an interest. Pyrope 09:41, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I reckon the case is one of personality. F1 types (and if I am honest I'm probably more a sports car racing kinda guy) are stats obsessives, and aren't so into the biographical details. I mainly got into editing F1 biographies as I was annoyed that so many great sports car drivers (of which JS was one) didn't have any mention of this in their bio pages. Pyrope 12:41, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Titles of headers

Ciao! Thanks for your additions. Only a note: title of headers must be not in capitals (i.e.: Motorcycle Grand Prix results, and not Results). See WP:Style for further info. Bye and good work. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Attilios (talkcontribs)

Grand Prix motorcycle racing seasons

Thanks for creating articles for many of these seasons. Very good work. Prolog 20:13, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very good work? Thats an understatement your work is absolutely amazing!!! I personally asked user:readro and you I think that forty years of motorcycle racing was missinng from wikipedia and could you do it and I find in only a week or two it is practically done. Wow. Terrific stuff. I bow my Ernst Stavro Blofeld bald head done to you . Well done! I will be awarding you a barnstar. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 13:04, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another compliment to you for the immense and impressive amount of work you did putting together the MotoGP seasons. I really wonder how you did it, though -- All manual entry? Scanning with text recognition? A little help from other web pages? A hint of an answer would be appreciated, but regardless, you've done a great job.--Uli Kunkel 22:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I entered them manually :) My job means I'm stuck in one place with many hours to fill.
You've sure put those hours to good use. On behalf of many MotoGP fans, thanks.--Uli Kunkel 17:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CCM Armstrong Rotax

If u didn't put the CCM Armstrong request in To-do list, my error, but if correct... Have added a bit to CCM, SWM, and added both to Rotax engine users list. The one thing that is unclear is the relationship between CCM and Armstrong. In my "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Motorcycling" it says that "CCM became part of the Armstrong group in 1980", but Clews does not mention any of this on his CCM site history, and haven't found any other reference to date. The "MT-500" went through a few manufacturers in its life. Seasalt 11:29, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have since spotted a brochure jpg on cybermotorcycles Armstrong of a CCM made by Armstrong. http://www.cybermotorcycle.com/gallery/armstrong/Armstrong%20CCM%20560MX%20c1984%20Brochure.htm My guess is Armstrong took over CCM in 1980. Clews is probably glossing over the historical details a bit. You are investigating the racers... good luck. Seasalt 12:25, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Came across an article in Classic Racer magazine on the North West 200 which mentions Armstrong buying Cotton, and taking over Rotax racer production. I have reproduced the NW 200 article, in case it is of any use. Seasalt 13:33, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barry Sheene

Hi Orsoni, your info box has added some odd random text to the very top of the Barry Sheene article. I didn't want to revert it because I like the infobox, but you might want to play with the code a bit. kju 00:40, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes

Please stop using {{subst…}} when adding infoboxes to articles as you have done for various motorcyclists: it's leaving an awful mess in the articles particularly since you have not supplied all the parameters (such as images). As you can see here, templates like these which have complex code to allow for optional parameters should not be substituted. Could you please either revisit those articles and replace the substituted text with the original infobox or at least make a note on the talk-page of which infobox you used so somebody else can tidy them up? If you do not know how to do this, feel free to drop me a line and I will endeavour to help you. TIA HAND —Phil | Talk 12:33, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was talking about articles like Graeme Crosby where you have obviously used {{subst:infobox…}}, but it's not obvious without some tedious digging which infobox you used. It would be much more helpful if you left the "subst:" out: then the infobox would still be there and updates to the infobox template would be reflected in the article; it would also be much easier for people to fill in information which might have been missing. HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 19:07, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Internal capitals in sort keys

You will notice that I have reverted your changes to Mike LaRocco [3] and Danny LaPorte [4]. Because of the way the software sorts titles, all capital letters precede all lower-case ones, so any internal capitals mess up the sorting scheme. I am not suggesting that the names ever appear as "Larocco" or "Laporte", but merely that they should be sorted correctly in the alphabet, between "Abdellatif Laabi" and "Giuseppe Lazzarotto", rather than (incorrectly) before them both.--Stemonitis 07:11, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

19xx in Formula One

Hi Orsoni. I notice you've been moving the 1950 F1 race reports into Category:1950 in Formula One. In the hopes of saving you some effort, a while back we decided to put the F1 race reports into a "race reports" subcategory of "19xx in Formula One", e.g. the 1950 race reports should go in Category:1950 Formula One race reports, a subcategory of Category:1950 in Formula One. See Category:2004 Formula One race reports as an example. -- DH85868993 10:55, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh damn - something I forgot to mention. When putting articles into the race report category, they should be sorted by the country name, e.g. 1950 British Grand Prix should contain "[[Category:1950 Formula One race reports|British]]". Sorry for any inconvenience. (I'll fix any you've redone in the meantime if you like) -- DH85868993 11:12, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and one more thing (hopefully the last one!). As you put the articles into the "19xx Formula One race reports" category, please remove them from Category:Formula One race reports. Thanks. -- DH85868993 11:19, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help me

A page I edited received a Wikipedia:Template substitution tag on it. The page is a biography on Kevin Schwantz. Here is the template I copied: Template:Former F1 driver. I am not sure how to go about fixing this problem. Any help is appreciated.Orsoni 19:42, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Normally, templates like user warnings (eg. for vandalism ) should be substituted but the template you mentioned should not be substituted because any changes made to that template should reflect on the article page. So my guess is this template substitution tag was a mistake. Please ask me if you have any questions. - TwoOars 19:55, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, that's not true. What actually happened was, you probably subst:ed when you shouldn't have. Just remove that infobox from that article and then copy the "Cut-and-paste pro forma" from the template page. Then fill in the details. - TwoOars 20:02, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Do I click on the EDIT tag in the "Cut-and-paste pro forma" section? Or do I cut & paste directly from the "Cut-and-paste pro forma" section?Orsoni 20:18, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do one thing: I'll copy the infobox into the article for you. You fill in the details. - TwoOars 20:20, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ok, done. Now you go to the Kevin Schwantz article, click on Edit this page and fill in the details. - TwoOars 20:24, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again! However, there are about 20 articles I need to fix so I was hoping to learn the proper way so I could go about fixing them. Sorry for being such a newb!Orsoni 20:27, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, oh, I went ahead and filled in the details, sorry :P. Ok here are the step by step instructions:
  • go to Template:Former F1 driver and copy the "Cut-and-paste pro forma" (the part that is in the grey box. Copy in the normal mode, not in the Edit mode)
  • then go to the article page and click on Edit this page
  • remove the subst:ed infobox. (That is from the part that says
<!-- use Template:MotoGP rider -->

to the part that says

|}<noinclude>
  • paste the part that you had copied earlier
  • fill in the details and save

- TwoOars 20:39, 15 June 2007 (UTC) Did you get that? can you do it now? - TwoOars 20:56, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! Thank you for your help!Orsoni 20:58, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moving articles

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently copied the contents of a page and pasted it into another with a different name. Specifically, you copied the contents of Bill Doran (disambiguation) and pasted it into Bill Doran. This is what we call a "cut and paste move", and it is very undesirable because it splits the article's history, which is needed for attribution and is helpful in many other ways. The mechanism we use for renaming an article is to move it to a new name which both preserves the page's history and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. If there is an article that you cannot move yourself by this process, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves to request the move by another. Also, if there are any other articles that you copied and pasted, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. The history at Bill Doran has been repaired with regards to contributor attribution, but any others that have been copied in this way may remain to be addressed . If you have any questions about this, please feel free to let me know at my talk page. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:19, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

German GP

The German GP was/is always the "Großer Preis von Deutschland" (GP of Germany). It was not affected by the shortlived "Großer Preis der DDR" (GP of the GDR) being held also for some time in the communist state behind the Berlin Wall. Template:MGP

Hi Orsoni. I saw your recent edits to Geoff Duke. In case you were unaware, there is a shorthand template for linking to Grand Prix motorcycle racing seasons - it's Template:MGP and is used as follows: "Valentino Rossi won the {{MGP|2005}} championship." which produces "Valentino Rossi won the 2005 championship." Might save you a bit of typing in the future. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 07:30, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Off-road

It's refreshing to see someone else doing something on an off-road racing topic. I thought that I was the only Wikipedian who would do some work on the topic! Even if you work on 2 wheel articles. I just wrote an article on Carl Renezeder who just set 2 major records in 2009 - only driver to win 7 national trophy truck titles plus the first driver to win both 2 & 4 wheel drive trophy truck championships in the same season. It was be like no article for Richard Petty or Dale Earnhardt. It should be on the main page in the next week on DYK. I went to Crandon in 2009, so I'll soon write an article on the Borg-Warner World Championship race. The race was televised live on ABC (free network TV) in America. Royalbroil 05:39, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In a 1000 mile off-road race, breaking and repairing before you win is very likely, right! Don't they regularly fix the vehicle? Everything that I find shows that Roberts and Smith won the race. This one is probably reliable enough to be used in a featured article, probably the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame too. In short - looks good to me. I can't find his birthdate or birthplace either. I wouldn't worry about it - I've had several DYK articles appear on the main page without this info. Anyone can add it if they find it. Cheers! Footnotes?

Could you let me know more specifically what footnotes you are talking about? I have moved footnotes a couple of times, and have removed dead links, but I don't believe I've ever just removed one. If anything, I can be guilty of over-referencing.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 10:25, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't like what you've done to Jerry Grote's article. The external links to his stats at baseball-reference and the cube are at the bottom of the article. why would you repeatedly reference those links again throughout the article. It makes no sense and looks silly.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 09:56, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Then come discuss it at Talk:Jerry Grote - that's what talk pages are for. Stop reverting. Wknight94 talk 12:36, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No one is trying to destroy anything. I haven't taken out a single piece of accurate information. In several cases, I've moved it or rephrased it, but never completely removed. Again, I need to point out that there is an external link to Grote's stats at baseball-reference and the other baseball sites. There is no need to footnote it every time one of his stats is mentioned. It's redundant and looks silly.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 20:59, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Orsoni. At Clay Dalrymple, we write that CD "repeated the feat" of breaking up a no-hitter (for a second time) blah, blah. Is breaking up a no-hitter really a "feat"? I think "He again played the spoiler" when he broke up blah, blah is more fitting. Whadda you think? — HarringtonSmith (talk) 14:28, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I know — the Nolan Ryan thing was my contribution. It's sort of a bar-bet kind of thing, I admit, but it is interesting that CD, who was not known for his batting prowess, was a one-man spoiler in three different instances. I can't ask that we leave it in, but I sure wouldn't mind if we did. I'll go have a look at the "feat" edit. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 05:09, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Re: Stan Lopata

Thank you for the weird barnstar thingee. I've never been thanked for content creation on Wikipedia ever. I expanded the Stan Lopata article because he autographed a baseball card I sent to him through the mail with a SASE. I wanted to show my appreciation for his continuing dedication to baseball fans, so I decided to turn his stub into a definitive article that covers all the major events of his career. I wrote a longer article for 1950s-60s catcher Hobie Landrith which took a long, long time considering the 120+ references I had to cite. I haven't had much time to expand articles lately, but my current project is for slugger Don Demeter. The work in progress is located at User:Vodello/Don Demeter and hopefully I will get it finished this month.

I don't want these players to be small footnotes in history. When I got to Lopata's page, it was nothing more than a small stub. All articles I've expanded were stubs. I try my best to give them the respect they deserve by writing a mostly definitive article that documents their storied career. My goal is to expand articles of all players that have autographed my baseball cards through the mail to C-Class or higher. I have not nominated any of my articles for Wikipedia:Good article nominations as I don't really have the time to fix up the articles enough, but if anyone out there wishes to improve Stan Lopata and Hobie Landrith to GA+, they're more than welcome to try. Wikipedia is a community collaboration, after all.

Again, thanks much for your encouragement. I'm glad that years down the road, people may look up Stan Lopata or Hobie Landrith and see that they were much, much more than players with average stat lines. Vodello (talk) 18:54, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(add) I just now noticed that you've already cleaned up the Stan Lopata article considerably. Thank you so much! I am not a good article writer, nor am I well-versed in Wikipedia's Manual of Style, so I greatly appreciate you fixing this up. Lopata

You could find the newspaper references in Google News, many of them is in Public Domain. Btw, you should try several of your articles to WP:GA status. There's also Paper of Record, which has the entire Sporting News archives (mostly useless before 1930 as it doesn't search properly and the newspaper are old, but after 1930 is a goldmine). Thanks Secret account 17:12, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I went to Paperofrecord to find a plethora of rare information hidden in The Sporting News, especially in regards to a player's minor league career. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to find articles written about the subject in Baseball Digest, which has years upon years of archives in the Google Books archives. The rest of my reliable sources come from the Google News archives. Vodello (talk) 01:55, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I encourage you to try for WP:GA and WP:FA these articles, your among the best baseball writers in the project, no reason why you shouldn't have a million FAs and GAs if you keep focus on it, I'll pass Grote for GA (after a few easy to fix comments). I'm pretty sure Graham was a retirement. I also think Ken Armstrong is a mistake made by some sources years ago and reprinted along the way, it should be Reg Armstrong. [6]. This site I've used makes a note of it as well, that some sources list Ken Armstrong [7]. I really don't know any information of this rider Ken Armstrong, riders list from this site [8] what is pretty comprehensive shows a rider by that name in '70s.Marty Rockatansky (talk)

Hi,

I've reviewed your GAN and made a few comments at Talk:Pepper Martin/GA1. I have placed the article on hold for seven days. All the problems mentioned only require little fixes and there are no major issues. It is a very well written and informative article.

I have a final question about the heading "The Gashouse Gang" - whether that term adequately characterizes the section. I'm going to pass the article, anyway, as that is not a deal breaker, but perhaps you could evaluate that.

Phil Roof

For the record, I am exactly who you think I am. So what if I choose not to log in. Anyway, I've gotten into a little bit of a discussion with Jrcla2 about the changes I made and why on his talk page.

As far as making it more encyclopediac (?), do what you gotta do. I really don't care about that. The reason I made the changes I made are on his talk page.

J.S.

You added a bunch of unnecessary links to Baseball-Reference. Does your uncle own the website or something? Anyway when I removed them in unneccessary or inaccurate places, you posted that whole "Heads up" nonsense in WT:BASEBALL. This isn't the first time you've done something like this to me. Every time I edit an article you've already edited you do this. --J.S. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.54.246.53 (talk) 09:52, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I'm wrong. Post your case over on WT:BASEBALL, and together we may be able to reach a concensus.Orsoni (talk) 15:24, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I don't have ownership issues (or at least, I don't think so). If I phrase something incorrectly or do something that doesn't meet Wikipedia standards, by all means, fix it. Can't you trust me to do the same without debating the subject at WT:BASEBALL? --J.S. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.54.246.53 (talk) 12:45, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't remove any of the information you added to the Phil Roof article. You were the one who reverted all my edits, saying that Phil liked your version better, so it's ironic that I'm the one accused of having ownership issues. You've added good information to the article. We can work together and make a good article.Orsoni (talk) 14:20, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When I edited Roof's article, I changed the opening paragraph to read as follows:

Phillip Anthony Roof (born March 5, 1941) is a former Major League Baseball catcher and coach and minor league manager. He holds the distinction of being the first player acquired by the expansion Toronto Blue Jays, however, is best remembered as a member of the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Minnesota Twins. Although Roof was a relatively weak hitter, he sustained a lengthy career in the major leagues due to his valuable defensive abilities.

You changed the opening to:

Phillip Anthony Roof (born March 5, 1941) is an American former professional baseball player, coach and minor league manager.[1][2] He played for 15 seasons as a catcher in Major League Baseball in 1961 and from 1964 to 1977, most notably for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics and the Minnesota Twins.

I don't see how that makes it more encyclopedic. It's seems like little more than a style change and reverting it back to the way you had it before I started editing the article. My definition of an ownership issue is making changes that add no value to an article, putting it back the way you had it, and then complaining on WT: BASEBALL about the other editor. --J.S. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.54.246.53 (talk) 02:31, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The whole purpose of WT: BASEBALL is to enable editors to reach an agreement and develop a concensus. I would think that you would be in favor of that.Orsoni (talk) 12:16, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and no. If two people are having an intellectual debate, and are unable to reach an agreement, it is always a good idea to see which way the masses go. I've lost this debate a couple times, and I'm OK with it. I don't see the purpose of some of the changes you made other than to turn the wording back to the way you originally had it. It's kinda frustrating and its not the first time I've dealt with this nonsense on Wikipedia (Bob Forsch & John Gochnaur for example). There seem to be a lot of egos out there. --J.S. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.54.246.53 (talk) 15:27, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball player introductions

Thanks for advice: what do you highlight, professional baseball player or professional baseball player? I've been improving and correcting the Mickey Mantle article and applied "professional baseball player" as you suggested. All-Star(player) was somehow accepted widely on Wikipedia baseball player articles as All-Star Game, which doesn't make sense at all. Perhaps a Wike article titled, Major League Baseball All-Star player would help? See Info box for Mantle (20x "All Star") which they (Yankee 10 for one) won't let me change. Actually he's a 16-time All-Star (selected 16 years), 1 MLB All-Star appearance credit per season (1959-1962; 8 games).
I don't agree with "World Series champion" (year) being used in player articles info boxes instead of World Series champion team (year)YahwehSaves (talk) 21:03, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to Italian motorcycle Grand Prix

You appear to have added the following:

The Italian motorcycle Grand Prix is a motorcycling event that is part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. Before 1991, Italy had previously held a round of the world championship, known as the Nations Grand Prix.

in this edit back in 2006.

Is there any historical source for the Italian motorcycle Grand Prix being called Nations Grand Prix? And if so, in what countries/languages? It does not Google, except for Wikipedia and Motogp.com - is the latter where you sourced it, from a modern website, almost qualifying as self-published? Further compounding the confusion is a redirect created by @Orsoni: which is just bouncing around to itself.

It started out with me intending to simply add an image to a BLP (with a caption 2nd place to Mike Hailwood, Italian Grand Prix) and not recognising the infobox link, formatted as [[Italian motorcycle Grand Prix|Nations Grand Prix}}, but so far I've spent 30 minutes checking period mags, books and net, trying to understand the basis for this, because I suspect something's wrong here. Is there any historically-provable, hard-copy basis? Am I missing a subtle connection somewhere? Thanks.-- message ends

Overlinking

Hello. Re your edit at Cadel Evans [9]: did you know what Muphry's law is? :) Actually, I'm not sure I agree about the substance of your edit: "former Australian cyclist" conforms with standard English adjective order, and sounds better to my ear, but I'm not a native speaker, but I'm leaving it be for now. I might open a thread on WP:RDL.

Actually, I have another concern: you seem to often link articles like Americans or Australians from biographies, but that practice is explicitly discouraged by WP:OLINK (bold mine): Unless a term is particularly relevant to the context in the article, the following are not usually linked: – Everyday words understood by most readers in context – The names of major geographic features and locations, languages, nationalities and religions. I would say that "American" is both an every day word and a major nationality. Regards, No such user (talk) 11:36, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New article

I have created a new article Ben and Tom Birchall (motorcycle sidecar road racers). It's a bit thin in certain areas, if there's anything you'd like to add, results tables, etc. It's already been re-named, which I half-expected, that's why I named it so the redirect would endure. Many thanks.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 01:48, 20 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for June 16

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 1983 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Marlboro (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
