This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Beetstra (talk | contribs) at 11:27, 7 July 2021 (→‎scidiagnose.com: Added to Blacklist using SBHandler). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

    Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

    Instructions for editors

    There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

    1. Proposed additions
    2. Proposed removals
    3. Troubleshooting and problems
    4. Discussion

    Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

    Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

    Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

    Instructions for admins

    Any admin unfamiliar with this page should probably read this first, thanks.
    If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

    Please consider using Special:BlockedExternalDomains instead, powered by the AbuseFilter extension. This is faster and more easily searchable, though only supports whole domains and not whitelisting.

    1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
    2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
    3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages).
    4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regex — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
    5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
    6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number - 1032431422 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.
    snippet for logging: {{/request|1032431422#section_name}}
    snippet for logging of WikiProject Spam items: {{WPSPAM|1032431422#section_name}}

    I can't envision and legit uses of this blog-like site, but hitting too many different pages for protection and an IPv6 pool of /32 seems too large to block compared to the level of disruption. DMacks (talk) 16:26, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Proposed removals

    waddensea-worldheritage.org

    I cannot find it in the list, but I think it's accidentally triggered by: \bworldheritage\.org\b

    It's causing issues editing the Wadden Sea article, because it contains many existing links to this site and it trips all the time, but when I open the links, they seem perfectly legitimate and the site seems to be supported by all sorts of government agencies and such.

    One way to fix it, assuming our regex engine uses the same syntax as JavaScript, would be to change it to: [^-]\bworldheritage\.org\b

    I've tested this using the JavaScript console of my browser:

    [/\bworldheritage\.org\b/,/[^-]\bworldheritage\.org\b/].map(x=>x.test('https://waddensea-world@@@REMOVE THIS@@@heritage.org'))
    Array [ true, false ]
    [/\bworldheritage\.org\b/,/[^-]\bworldheritage\.org\b/].map(x=>x.test('https://world@@@REMOVE THIS@@@heritage.org'))
    Array [ true, true ]

    So this would fix the problem, while still keeping worldheritage.org links blocked.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.61.180.106 (talkcontribs)

    techietech.tech (removal)

    This was done by an ex-employee in order to get this domain blocked by Wikipedia admins and cause damage to the small business. The disgruntled employee was terminated for their actions. The local authorities have also been notified of this. So, they will be proceeding as per the local law. Meanwhile, we request you to remove this domain from the blacklist. The official team stopped posting on Wikipedia after a warning by MrOllie to NeerajBhateja. After that, the account made only relevant changes with reliable sources. You can refer to the contributions of the user as well for confirmation. We apologize for all the trouble that was caused due to the spam from external actions to the organization. Hope you’ll consider this request. Thank you for your time.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.208.70.101 (talkcontribs)

    @103.208.70.101: no Declined (though maybe better:  On hold). This situation was resolved yesterday by blocking the domain, suggesting that the spamming was ongoing as late as yesterday. I can understand that this is a Joe job, but the function of the spam blacklist is to protect the encyclopedia, and there is no reason to expect that the spamming has stopped (and if it did not, it will give more disruption). Unless you can show that this domain is actually needed on Wikipedia to support material, and that that is needed now I suggest that we let the situation cool down. --Dirk Beetstra T C 05:41, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @Beetstra: Thank you for understanding and putting this on hold. We appreciate it. Yes, you are right that these are measures to protect the encyclopedia. We totally respect that. We also agree that it is better to let things cool down. Let us wait for a few weeks. Once the matter has been resolved with the local authorities, we will reach out. Once again we sincerely apologize for all the trouble. Thank you for the help and keep up the great work running Wikipedia.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.208.70.101 (talkcontribs)
    I don't believe that this was a joe job. First of all, your explanation doesn't make any sense; first you say it was perpetrated by a "disgruntled ex-employee," then go on to say that "they were terminated for their actions." So which is it? They were terminated, then they did the joe job, or they decided to do a "joe job" while they were an active employee, then were terminated for that? All while adding the link from some of the same ranges as the other additions? This was just blacklisted yesterday, and yet you immediately noticed that it was blacklisted? I strongly object to the removal of this link from the blacklist, given the extensiveness of the spam campaign as outlined above and given that I am 100% confident that for any of the "product updates" this site covers there will always be superior alternative references. OhNoitsJamie Talk 14:32, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    I understand your concern and I know what this looks like. This particular employee was let go because of over-spamming sites like Reddit, Quora etc. Spamming our link on Wikipedia isn't his first attempt to damage our small business. He has got our domain and accounts banned on many subreddits, Quora, Facebook groups, etc. and by many Blackhat SEO techniques. Therefore, he was terminated for his actions. We were notified of this blacklisting as JaabaTheButt (the account used by that employee) account's email access is with us. We've already notified the local authorities and they are looking into this and we request you to please let this cool down. The citing from our official account stopped after MrOllie explained that our domain did not fit in the reliable sources category. Hence, we contributed to Wikipedia by citing reliable sources only. You can check the contributions history of NeerajBhateja as well. Once again, we apologize for all the trouble. Hope you'll understand. 103.208.70.101 (talk) 07:00, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    Links to your site are of zero use to Wikipedia, and as such, there's no reason to remove it from the blacklist. OhNoitsJamie Talk 00:24, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    As mentioned earlier, the local authorities are dealing with this. As for our credibility as a reliable news source. Our small team has covered issues in the consumer technology market which the big news sources skip. We also covered a story where a leading smartphone manufacturer was producing and selling flagship products but were using inferior parts for the South Asian market while charging more for the same product. This later helped improve consumer awareness in the South Asian as well as global market. Our articles get mentions from leading local news authorities as well. It's on its way to becoming a reliable source. Since our domain was spammed recently on Wikipedia so we request you to put our request on hold for a few weeks until the matter is solved by the local authorities. Or you can put it in the Revertlist so it does not cause any trouble. Once again, we apologize for all the trouble Dirk Beetstra User:Ohnoitsjamie. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.195.201.24 (talk) 18:48, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    You and I both know that there are no "local authorities" anywhere in the world who care about something like link spamming, so that argument is going nowhere. Also take note of the prominent yellow box at the top of this section: Requests from site owners or anyone with a conflict of interest will be declined. Otherwise, follow these steps to post a properly-formatted request:. I'm sure you'll find another way to promote your site. OhNoitsJamie Talk 19:18, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Logging / COIBot Instructions

    Blacklist logging

    Full instructions for admins

    Quick reference

    For Spam reports or requests originating from this page, use template {{/request|0#section_name}}

    • {{/request|213416274#Section_name}}
    • Insert the oldid 213416274 a hash "#" and the Section_name (Underscoring_spaces_where_applicable):
    • Use within the entry log here.

    For Spam reports or requests originating from Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam use template {{WPSPAM|0#section_name}}

    • {{WPSPAM|182725895#Section_name}}
    • Insert the oldid 182725895 a hash "#" and the Section_name (Underscoring_spaces_where_applicable):
    • Use within the entry log here.
    Note: If you do not log your entries, it may be removed if someone appeals the entry and no valid reasons can be found.

    Addition to the COIBot reports

    The lower list in the COIBot reports now have after each link four numbers between brackets (e.g. "www.example.com (0, 0, 0, 0)"):

    1. first number, how many links did this user add (is the same after each link)
    2. second number, how many times did this link get added to wikipedia (for as far as the linkwatcher database goes back)
    3. third number, how many times did this user add this link
    4. fourth number, to how many different wikipedia did this user add this link.

    If the third number or the fourth number are high with respect to the first or the second, then that means that the user has at least a preference for using that link. Be careful with other statistics from these numbers (e.g. good user who adds a lot of links). If there are more statistics that would be useful, please notify me, and I will have a look if I can get the info out of the database and report it. This data is available in real-time on IRC.

    Poking COIBot

    When adding {{LinkSummary}}, {{UserSummary}} and/or {{IPSummary}} templates to WT:WPSPAM, WT:SBL, WT:SWL and User:COIBot/Poke (the latter for privileged editors) COIBot will generate linkreports for the domains, and userreports for users and IPs.
