Sock advice

File:Anus of a model by David Shankbone.jpg
Human male anus

Alison, you've been very helpful in the past about sock puppets of community-banned James Salsman (LossIsNotMore et al.). I've had a new user pegged as his latest sock since its creation, but James has vowed to make his socking harder to catch, and my idea that his IP ranges need to be checked monthly is of course difficult to work. My only real evidence is style of language and fixation of edits and knowing it when I see it. The user I have in mind has only edited in relation to Ron Paul, almost always skirting the borders of BLP, with one exception for Bo Diddley. I got him blocked for 3RR but he is retaining familiar single-mindedness. Could you provide me a little guidance on this talk as to how to proceed? Finding really good behavioral matches is very time-consuming and I have succeeded in outing him once or twice before. Every time we get him we flush out a whole nest. Thank you. another image copyright thing that's not quite right

Human male anus

Hi you seem to know what you're doing with these things than me, and it might only take you a mo, so could you possibly have a think about [2] ? The tag claims it's self-made but it's not, or even if the person drew this particular one, the symbol itself is under copyright, as is explained here [3] "If anyone wants to legally use our version of the “Sigil of Baphomet,” they may ask for permission, and we have generally been quite liberal in licensing people to use this for various projects and goods—though we usually only allow its use on websites when (and where) they are mentioning the Church of Satan. Otherwise, those wishing to use a public domain version of a goat / pentagram / “Leviathan” symbol must go back to the historically published sources, or they may take the challenge to draw a fresh one." It looks a bit like their one- not the one at the top of page which has the letters filled in, but scroll down to the end near by Peter Gilmore signs it and here's a photo of it in black and red on the left. Ecomapping Article

Hello Alison, I contact you because my article was deleted because of "advertising". But this article was never intended to be read as an advertisment, It is purely an explaination of what Ecomapping is and where it started. Do you have any suggestions on how to rewrite the article in order not to breech the wikipedia advertising rules. Your comment; "having faith in other moderators..."

I have tried to argue my case re:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Domer48#Third_opinion, by asking him directly on his talk page why he has repeatedly removed my addition to the IRA page (which is factual based - the IRA being a "paramilitary" organisation and not "military" one, with the latter being officially sanctioned by a country or government, and the former not), deleted my addition to the IRA talk page asking why (and I assure you I was not in for the personal attacks at this stage). I requested a third opinion (As you saw) but the user deleted my contribution toward it (as it was I who suggested it), said the third opinion wasn't needed, forget about etc, and the other moderated agreed. I mean, what is this a joke? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crieff405 (talkcontribs) 23:56, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Talk pages

Hello. Per your comment here to Scorpion, I was wondering what your personal opinion is on a topic like this appearing on a project talk page. The talk page guidelines seem sort of broad in that topics should pertain to the subject. In the above example, it pertained to vandalism on a respected project member's page. Thanks. I was really referring to the large amount of material excised from the article's previous Criticism section. At least some of those sources were Fox news subsidiaries. NisarKand

Dear Alison,

You have no idea who NisarKand is. I will soon let you know what type of person he is. I have the things he wrote for which he got banned still on record. You will see soon. By the way, I don't know why you keep mentioning Tajik, he hasn't edited in over a year now and has not made any sockpuppets since he unjustly got banned. Probably NisarKand manipulated you into beleving I am him or something like that. If you check his checkuser page you will see he does not even have one sockpuppet confirmed. Tajik has never made a single sockpuppet, see for yourself his checkuser page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Tajik

Only one is likely and the rest were actually Beh-nam.

Either way, he hasn't made any recently so I don't know why you mention him. Probably NisarKand fooled you as he fools others. Or maybe you all just support NisarKand. I suspect that lately since all the admins including you just ignore him and let him get what he wants.

You could easily IP range block him, he is from a small town in Pakistan, not many people from there will be editing the En Wiki.

Beh-nam however is not possible since he lives in one of the largest cities in North America and blocking his IP will block some 6 million people from editing because his ISP is the largest in the region. You don't want to do that because many Wiki editors, including admins are from Beh-nam's area.

NisarKand however is ok since there are no other editors on En Wiki from his area.

Hi Alison, this anon visited my talk page, so I checked him out and got here. If you take a look at my talk page, he is definitely a sock of Beh-nam (same spelling issues, tone, pov), and it is also obvious that Beh-nam is the person behind the pseudonymous sock-thing that was made some months back (it was carl.blunderson, or something similar). Anywho, to stick my nose into your talk page, I think it would be prudent if you blocked this IP, as well as WikiSockpuppetFinder, as socks of Beh-nam; also, do a check-user on Rodwa4. He doesn't have the sock feeling, he's been very reasonable, but it can't hurt.
Also, while I have your ear, would you take a look at Survivalism. I've been in an edit-war, both of us violating 3rr, over a disagreement on the EL policy. Three different editors have clearly sided with me in one way or another, and I feel that the user I'm opposing is in violation of EL policy and thus a vandal. Ergo, I am not guilty of 3rr violation for blocking purposes. But no matter what you think, admin intervention is definitely needed...its been quite a headache. Thanks, Alison. Carl.bunderson (talk) 07:08, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. The 70.xx IP is  Confirmed as Beh-nam (talk · contribs) again, as is WikiSockpuppetFinder (talk · contribs). Rodwa4 (talk · contribs) is Red X Unrelated to NisarKand, however, and I've rolled back Beh-nam's naughty RFCU request. I'll take a look at the edit-war in the morning here. It's 1:30 am now :) - Alison 07:38, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Alison. And another admin protected the page with the edit-war, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt if you would give your opinion on the issue, to discourage one of us. And it looks like we'ere in the same time-zone, fwiw. I'm off to bed soon too, soon as I tie up all my wiki-loose ends. Carl.bunderson (talk) 07:51, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Checkuser

Hello Alison, I hope you don't mind me asking, did your checkuser on the IP bring up more than two users? The reason I ask is that I believe Fonez4mii is or has been using multiple socks. A gut feeling, but one I think is correct. Thanks! Jack forbes (talk) 09:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note, Checkuser is not for fishing, and gut feeling is not generally a good enough reason for checkuser, but I put up no objection if need be. Fone4Me 09:54, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

checkusership

Alison, I am very interested in gaining Check-User status. I find that the Beh-nam/NisarKand/Tajik sockpuppetry drones on and on with no end in sight. I know their sockpuppets when I see them, and I would like the ability to take quicker action to verify my suspicions. You do terrific work in this regard, but maybe I can help lessen the load.

What is the process for me to take to gain Check-User status? And what advice do you have. Cheers, Kingturtle (talk) 12:36, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS favour

Can you check the OTRS of Image:Bird Headshot.JPG, the lack of source information in this free use image is making me wary and I can't see the OTRS filing without an account. –– Lid(Talk) 14:34, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just nod if you can hear me. –– Lid(Talk) 05:27, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*nod* *nod* - yep. I just deleted it for a number of reasons. It's a dupe of the previously-deleted Image:Bird Headshot.jpg (note the case), it's a blatant copyvio from here, the original uploader tagged it with the OTRS template when they were not authorized to, nor did it have any ticket number. Sorry, but it had to be nuked :( - Alison 05:37, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It actually wasn't the original uploader who tagged it.[4] And the Guardian link shows it elsewhere in use, but attributed it as a PR photo rather than one the Guardian authored. So it is at least possible that the uploader was the actual author. I don't have any supporting information or information to the contrary, I'm just curious as to your decision making process. Postdlf (talk) 17:53, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about all the fuss. That was really messed up, and I can see what happened now. I scoured OTRS yesterday looking for the ticket which covers that image, and couldn't find it. It had been previously uploaded twice before, and deleted twice before having had a number of licenses. Basically, the OTRS template was filled out in such a way that the ticket ID was invisible. Once I had the ticket, I was able to find it in the system, restore the image and move it to Commons (where I edit-conflicted with you over the cats :) ). Sorry about all the hassle. I think we're sorted now - Alison 21:48, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alison, another possible User:House1090 sock here: User:Salcan

based on their shared inability to understand copyright plagiarism and tendency to put bogus block notices on the user pages of editors they disagree with, as well as propensity to edit articles in the San Bernardino subject area. Bad grammar is also a match.

I don't know if a check user would trace back to his prior IPs, and he doesn't seem to have other accounts active at present. WP:SSP is backlogged, and so i am not sure where else to put this. Hope you are doing well, Ameriquedialectics 21:20, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted all the images as badly licensed and used for vandalism only. The account is also blocked over there for vandlism/cross-wiki issues. So not here to build an encyclopedia :/ - Alison 04:28, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. =) Is there an appropriate CSD tag over on Commons? I tried to wade through the deletion process, but it was a bit foreign to me and couldn't find an appropriate tag. So much easier to delete thing here myself, not used to requesting stuff (ha!). -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:37, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You should use template:Speedydelete for vandalism images. Other useful templates might be template:copyvio and template:Badname Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 11:51, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Vicífhoclóir & Commons

Hi Alison, thanks for the invite and offering to change my Commons username. It would be great if my username in commons was just Blathnaid, if that's possible to do. If I have single user login, I have no excuse for not contributing to Vicífhoclóir and Vicipéid :) I'm not sure if the ga-3 on my userpage is accurate anymore though; my mother is fluent and she sent me off to Irish College every summer, but my ability is rapidly declining since the only practise I get with Irish these days is occasionally watching TG4. It would hurt my pride to put ga-2 on my userpage, though! Anyway, that's a long way of saying I'll see what I can do, but I could do more harm than good on a dictionary project :p All the best, Bláthnaid 09:26, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sluggish computer?

Is it just my computer? or is Wikipedia sluggish today. Making edits or saving postings, seems at times to take minutes to 'get through'. GoodDay (talk) 21:23, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A vandal

Hello Alison, How are you? I have'nt been making many edits lately, I have'nt been finding anything worth attention, I suppose the other 5,000 editors here are doing there job pretty well. I have been visisting Wikipedia almost every day, and I keep a look out for misspelled words and things like that. And of course, there is a more important reason why I visited. A user, who has'nt even created account, has started putting obvious spam on my talk page, including calling me a word I don't even know. Besides my talk page, he has only made three edits. I have tried to tell him the rules of this site, but I'm begining to lose my patience, and that is last thing I want to do with him. I was hoping that you could come in in case he does anything else. He has already been warned, and has'nt made an edit sinse then, but I fear the worst.Green Kirby (talk) 00:02, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I've lost my paintence with this person. Please block him for at least at least a little while.Green Kirby (talk) 00:46, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, this guy's made me kinda bad tempered right now. Can you please just try to help him? I'm going to just go on some other sites and get my mind off it, and if he makes another comment on my talk page, I'll just ignore him and revert it.Green Kirby (talk) 01:13, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rossami & Skanger

Hey Alison.. re User:Rossami and Skanger, I wasn't aware Rossami was an administrator, I did look for the usual indicators but s/he appears not to note the fact on his or her user or talk pages. I also haven't before come across an administrator, or any experienced user, who has unilaterally redirected a page like Skanger not once but twice on the grounds of.. well, I haven't quite figured that one out either. "Wikipedia is not a collection of articles whose subjects are words that can also be found in dictionaries" is the new policy I think he was attempting to invoke. As far as your comment about wheel-warring goes, I protected the page once and once only in this case to prevent it being redirected / hidden again without any form of consensus or valid rationale. Had I realized R was an admin I obviously wouldn't have bothered given the inevitable unprotect. Deiz talk 15:47, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deiz, while I actually agree 100% with your take on the issue here (I've worked extensively on that article in the past), what you did was completely out of order. You were in dispute on an article and, when a number of contentious reverts occurred, you fully protected the article yourself, and at your version to boot. That's a complete no-no from an admin perspective; you should never use the tools on an issue in which you are involved. That Rossami is an admin is neither here nor there, really, although they should not have undone the protect themselves and both of you should have gone to WP:RFPP with the issue when you felt the need arose. Just sayin', is all ... - Alison 16:38, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re: notes about administratorhood

Thank you for the suggestion but I would prefer not to because I honestly believe that, for the most part, adminship is no big deal - that it's more like janitorial work than some special status or recognition. I would far rather someone looked at the content of my contributions and comments when deciding whether my edits make sense for the project. If the idea makes sense, if the comments or actions are in keeping with Wikipedia's established policy and traditions, then it doesn't matter whether it came from an ordinary editor, an anon IP or an admin whose been here since day one. (Jimbo gets special consideration but only because he's our benevolent dictator.)

I know that's an ideal and sometimes an unrealistic one. I've toyed with the thought of putting actual biographical detail on my userpage. This has been another datapoint to consider. I will continue to give it thought. Thanks again. Rossami (talk) 16:50, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More examples. :( Enigma message 06:55, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. It looks like two or three /16 IP ranges from Istanbul, Turkey. I can possibly checkuser all of the ranges for collateral damage (yuk!) and then block AO. Let me know what you think. Either that or semi-prot on the two pages - Alison 07:28, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I just did a trace on a few and they're all going back to Istanbul. I was discussing it with Luna Santin. He thinks protection is preferable in this case, but I think a soft rangeblock for a few days would take care of the problem, without having to resort to semiprotecting a bunch of pages. If it's not too much trouble, checkuser the ranges and see if the collateral damage is within acceptable limits. Thanks for the attention, Enigma message 07:32, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm inclined to go with Luna's opinion on this one, too. Semi-prot, especially short-term ones, are far less restrictive than rangeblock - even soft rangeblocks. Given the total number of edits involved, and that it's in userspace, I don't feel comfortable in compromising the privacy of a large number of editors for this one issue. Really sorry on that, but the extent of the problem to-date doesn't warrant checkuser - Alison 08:10, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other JBspecials on that page. [5], [6], [7], [8]. Normally, I'd say one edit would of course NEVER be enough, but in this case, yeah, it's most probably JB. They're all  Stale, sir, so there's not much I can do. I'm not convinced that the account above is our pal JB, due to geoloc, but I've filed it away for the next inevitable check - Alison 23:35, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here we go Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive425#JB196_again. Might want to correspond the two checkuser's together to see if he's IP hopping again, or at least somewhat stable. SirFozzie (talk) 23:37, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A weird unofficial request for checkuser

I know checkuser is not for fishing, but off of the RFCU page, just as a talk page message outside of public view, I would like you to consider checking this user:

Newshounddog (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki)

Here's what happened: Newshounddog filed Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Rreagan007 alleging that Rreagan007 edited while logged out from an IP address that has recent talk page warnings. I determined that this was, in fact, correct, but that no violation of policy occurred. However, I noticed that Newshounddog's contribution history lasted a grand total of 27 minutes and was exclusively limited to filing this SSP case against Rreagan007. I honestly doubt that this is a legitimate new user. I wonder if it might be someone involved in a content dispute, but I have not found an obvious candidate. I know it's evil to wonder about such things, but still...

I have a real problem allowing any user to throw an accusation against another user without being accountable on his own username. If Newshounddog made this accusation in bad faith - certainly a possibility given the fact that Rreagan007 did not actually violate policy, and explained his actions to my satisfaction - then Newshounddog needs to be held accountable on his main account, and that main account needss to explain why it resorted to such underhanded tactics instead of just flat out making the accusation fairly. I know this is a really unusual request, but it's been bothering me for a couple of days, and I finally decided to come forward and ask. Yechiel (Shalom) 23:01, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Prester John

Hi Alison - many thanks for your feedback at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Prester John. You mentioned other accounts but beleived they were unrelated. At least two users (other than myself) at User talk:Timeshift9#Can I just check ... were suspicious of C.Marsh b.Lillee because of his behaviour but couldn't quite put their finger on it. There are a couple of prominent articles that would be a clue - most obvious one is on Kevin Rudd - current Australian PM - the other on John Howard - immediate past PM. It would seem that Prester John was in a dispute about Copra Plantations in New Guinea just before his 3 month block - that was related to the Howard article probably. So sorry to nag but if you are confident the other accounts using the same Ip are unrelated that is fine ... if they are editing Australian political articles they may not be. It would have been hard to pick C.Marsh b.Lillee just on editing behaviour --Matilda talk 07:01, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I realise you are really busy but ... since you seem to be on-line right now I thought this message might have got lost in the traffic you have - thanks --Matilda talk 01:18, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I just re-evaluated all the checkuser evidence, as well as the contribs, and those other accounts look just fine, even though they're on the same IP address. I don't think they're good-hand accounts or anything - Alison 07:24, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks :-) --Matilda talk 07:50, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Checkuser request

Hi Alison, could you possibly run a check user on me against an IP. To says I’m a little pissed off at the minute would be an understatement. The reason I ask is because I’ve been accused of running a sock here. The problem with accusations though, is once their made your forced to defend yourself. This is probably my fifth checkuser at this stage but hey whose counting. If it is at all possible I would be grateful. --Domer48 (talk) 17:05, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The CheckUser would show nothing - whoever the IP is, they're editing from a cell phone, hence why I'm concerned about it. It would be very easy for an editor to use a phone connection to edit and use a seperate ISP to edit under a normal account - checkuser is inconclusive for this. Ryan Postlethwaite 17:11, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You remove the comments of an IP’s from a talk page, and then block the page. The IP who had taken part in a discussion, you have now excluded from that discussion. When they went to WP:ANI you closed them down. They encouraged editors to take part in the discussion only to be edited out. You have made an accusation against me, which you are now saying you can’t back up? I file a valid arbitration enforcement and I get blocked. Angus can not answer one simple question, to support their article and talk page ban of me. Now this is going to one of two places, RfC or back to ArbCom. There is a distinct odour starting to emanate from all this, and its not coming from me. Alison, run the check user and then ask Ryan to explaine his accusations. --Domer48 (talk) 18:31, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm saying that it's an inconclusive result - it doesn't prove innocence or guilt, but the fact the IP is a cell phone is highly suspicious. I'm not saying that the IP is you, but I'm not discounting it - there's not much that can be done in a situation like this, except for for protecting the page to make sure that banned editors aren't posting, which is what I did. The fact is, it does look like someones usings different tactics to avoid CU detection - who is it? Well that's the tough one. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:35, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I could make a good guess, and - considering the history of certain unwelcome editors using IPs to agitate - semi-protecting is a decent idea. I would say, though, that I don't think the IP is anyone who is currently, or has recently, edited the page from another account. In other words, I very much doubt it is Domer (and considering the rather heightened tension at the moment, I think its probably a good idea to make that clear). Rockpocket 00:02, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I ran the checkuser, as requested and can state that Domer48 (talk · contribs) is not socking, to the best of my knowledge. However, I cannot comment on the mobile IPs and have no way of connecting or distancing them from Domer in any way. I've just no way of knowing. I can state that Domer48 has never used a mobile IP under his logged-in name and I personally consider it unlikely, from a style and behavioural impression, that the anon editor is Domer - Alison 00:23, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that Alison, I really appreciate it. While it is not the clear exoneration I would like, it is I know the very best you could provide. I simply regret the fact it was necessary to put you to the trouble. Rock thanks for that also, unexpected and welcome. --Domer48 (talk) 07:07, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to help, Domer. Strictly speaking, I shouldn't really have run it as it's slightly on the edge of policy but under the circumstances, I thought it necessary. Checkuser isn't really an exonerating tool either ... - Alison 07:14, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiDon

Alison, I wasn't "staring a career of this", but after four good years, I wanted people to know what happened. If you would help understand the frustrations of some good users on here, maybe it wouldn't get to the point that it did. You didn't even take the time to read what I wrote. "Why good contributors go bad?" If administrators like you had been more helpful in dealing with those guys, do you think I would have reached the frustration level that I did? 4.240.165.33 (talk) 00:07, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed this; you got RMS' real name wrong. I absolutely did read it through in its entirety, which was easy enough given you spammed it everywhere. I can understand your frustration but what you did was totally out of order; you framed another editor in order to ensure that they would be indefinitely blocked. Not only is that a blatant disregard for the rules here, etc, etc - it's also seriously unethical and sleazy. Not good at all. "Administrators like me" are run off our feet, day-in and day-out - you've no idea as to my workload both visible and behind the scenes. Seriously. I'm already spread far too thin, so don't go blaming me for your frustration nor your misdeeds - Alison 00:12, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't "spam" it everywhere, I put it in the case for my blockage, and my three accounts, I didn't even put it on the noticeboard, because it is so big now (thinking of you). I just wanted to let my friends, or Wikipedians who valued my work, to know how I felt. I know that you work hard, but if some of my ideas were put in place, it would make your workload less. That is the point I was trying to make. Users like me wouldn't get so frustrated and do what we do, and I am not the first or last. And, admins like you wouldn't have to work as hard either, and get frustrated. I really know that Allison. I totally understand where you are sitting, and wanted you to know how I felt. I think I worked with you two or three years ago, I did work with an Allison, but I don't think that was their user name, and we got along fine. I just wanted you to know how got to the point that I did. And, I wanted some other contributors on here, that actually like me, to know also.
Can I put it back without the user names?
4.240.165.59 (talk) 00:28, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, go on :) Can I suggest that your indef block is indef and not a ban. You know all this stuff already. Take a break though - hey, go to another wiki like I do - and come back chilled out and maybe appeal the block. You've been great up until recently and just slipped up bigtime. It happens, but honestly, you need to take some timeout and without socking. If you do that - and honestly - I'll certainly support an unblock later - Alison 00:36, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I thought it was a permanent block/ban, and would never be allowed back. I was a good contributor, and I think did some quality work. But, I have been out of work since Feb. 2007, and I think I let the financial stress really get to me the since this past May. I am in a downward spiral. I am so down I am not even looking for work. I shouldn't have let effect me on here, but it did. I let my bigger issues spill over here, maybe something that a person can't help? 4.240.165.59 (talk) 00:43, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

← No, it's not permanent. Just that there's no defined time when the block will be lifted. Take a break, do some other stuff and come back. Nobody should feel anger and frustration from editing WP. Sorry to hear about the job and stuff, too. That sucks :( - Alison 01:24, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS: What is really sad is, since I have been out of work, I stopped doing other things that I enjoy. With the price of fuel and food, and power bill, etc et al, rising, I don't drive anywhere. I just stay home. Contributing to Wikipedia was the only "positive" thing that I did during the day. I even stopped taking Speck to the park. I felt like that if I could improve articles here, I was doing something positive with my time. I even put my account name with URL on my resume 1) as a since of pride, and 2) to show that I have been doing something semi-positive. Now prospective employers who look at my resume and actually go to my user page will find a different story. I am not the kind of person that they want working for them. It is pretty damn depressing all the way around. Thanks for reading. 4.240.165.59 (talk) 01:24, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Owch! Well, let's try fix that, at least. Nobody deserves to be branded like that, to the extent that it can affect their career. That's wrong - Alison 01:28, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was trying to get a job at a media outlet editing. Guess I cut that off didn't I? Ever seen a grown man cry? 4.240.165.59 (talk) 01:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so sorry that had to happen. I've changed your userpage and will leave a message over on ANI later today. See how things go. In the meantime, please take a break from all this. Take Speck out for a run - he needs it :) - go dig around and find another wiki which is far less stressful and work on that for a while. Have you thought about Wikiquote or Wikisource? - Alison 01:38, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have thought about it. I guess because I have been here four years it is hard to pull away. I took a Wikibreak before, when I got stressed out, and came back without that same since of "ownership" to contributions. You know, you create or radically re-write an article, you take ownership of it, it is you baby. It is hard to divorce yourself of that feeling. When I am feeling good, it doesn't bother me and I can try to help users when they do things. But, when you get down, your patience runs short, and the little things that didn't bother you much before, you let really get to you. I really tried to work with DJQ and the General, at first (if you check the histories). I tried to positively guide them to a better product of mutual work. But, for what ever reason, some of them don't understand the language, some are very young, some of them won't take the time to read the tutorials, what ever it is, they just keep doing the same thing, over and over. It is like beating my head against the wall a concrete wall. Why can't there be a way to put these users on restricting editing until they see the bigger picture of cooperation and that there needs to be some layout rules? DJQ, just kept removing notices and creating new accounts. This user, Marion5900, will not space after punctuation. How do you get this guy to change one simple rule? He won't listen to me, just keeps plowing ahead, doing what he wants to do.
Poor Speck, he has to put up with my depression and frustrations too. I see a user like the General, and cuss, and he gets off the couch and goes in the other room. Poor baby. I could actually see this whole breakdown coming the past month or so. It is like you are standing on the edge of a hole, and you know that you are going to slip in, but yet you do it anyway. Does that mean it is an addiction? Is the WCA (Wikipedia Contributors Anonymous)? :(
Alison, thanks for listening to my diatribe and shit. You didn't have to. Other admins just blocked my IPs and moved on. Thanks again. 4.240.165.59 (talk) 01:59, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alison, no excuses for my conduct! I have left a message on my sockpuppet case requesting an indef block for my behaviour, if you could do that for me as soon as possble I would be grateful. Thank you. Jack forbes (talk) 02:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jack, I really don't want to do that. As checkuser, I just do the forensic work, if you like. Someone else needs to make a decision on the checkuser outcome and on all the other stuff. I'm not about to block you - Alison 07:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ummm. I don't think I can do that. I've already stretched things further than they should go, really, with taking off the sockmaster templates. Nor sure how I got away with doing that, in fact - Alison 08:00, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, what exactly did you mean by this? Are you suggesting I am User:Uk4ever? If you suspect this, can you please just do a checkuser? --fone4me 17:47, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are not Uk4ever. Please, all, stop with the checkuser stuff. Checkuser is not to be used to "prove" innocence - Alison 17:53, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the current Giano flap, I took a look at this user's contributions. They look like a sockpuppet or new account of a prior editor to me; especially given the first diff. New user registration problem

Dear Alison,

Ahh! Your user profile is MUCH more user-friendly than other Admins' profiles! As a newbie, I had no idea these things varied. THANK YOU! You have earned my eternal gratitude. And Jimmy Wales just averted another lost user!

So as not to waste your time, let me get to the point. I need an Admin's help to do this.

I need to register under as many Wiki subdomains as possible under the username 'A.k.a.' I've been given this name for the regular Wikipedia site, but I just discovered that there are other subdomains that require registration as well. What a drag.

The reason I need to ask an Admin for help with registration is that there is a user named 'Aka'. I'm being stubborn about my own username because I want to standardize it across as many forums as I can -- so far, many many! Would you mind lending a hand with the process?

You can email me at alsoknownas at live dot com to get in touch. I'd prefer you erase my email address after you respond, so it's not harvested.

The most immediate need I had was to upload my first image to a Wikipedia talk page. That sent me to the Wikimedia Commons site... http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UserLogin

...which is apparently an entirely separate subdomain that doesn't recognize my login at wikipedia.org.

Are there any other related domains where an account ought also to be created?

Thanks a million, Alison.

Kenworth article copyvio notice.

Hey Alison,

I normally don't leave messages on the talk pages of WikiAdmins, but I feel compelled to do so in this case.

On June 17th, I had been left a rather terse (and what I took as rude) message left on my talk page by User:WikiDon in regards to a copyright concern on the Kenworth page, in regards to the text featured here at the Pacific History section of a website titled GilligCoaches.NET. The copyright concern notice also went up on the Kenworth page itself that day, and was listed two days later on Wikipedia:Copyright problems under the June 19 heading. To help illustrate the problem, I'm posting the text in full that I posted on WP:CP, and you're invited to read the dialog between me and WikiDon as well, if you wish.

The copyright concerns with the Kenworth article stems from a section that was formerly titled "Kenworth's Involvement in the Transit and School Bus industry." The contents of the entire section were of my own writings, which I had published on the world wide web on my website GilligCoaches.NET. The writings in the Kenworth article were a condensed and derivative version of the text featured on the Pacific History section of my website. Upon completion of the writing of the section in the Kenworth article itself, I then uploaded and expanded the text for my own website. Immediately afterwards, I placed a marker on the bottom of the page, reading as follows: " I've authored a condensed and derivative form of this text for the Kenworth article on Wikipedia " (with a backlink to the Kenworth article on Wikipedia) as a courtesy, and to avoid this issue in the first place. User:WikiDon, without even giving that notice on the "Pacific History" page a glance, posted a rather disrespectful remark on my Talk Page also without ever investigating my user page itself - which makes a rather blatant and obvious reference to GilligCoaches.NET and what my hobbies are. While I appreciate the fact that someone would look after my own writings and perceive them to be in violation, they in fact were not in violation at anytime. Furthermore, WikiDon failed to investigate the manner properly, instead outright accusing me of copyright infringement without any knowledge and proper investigation of the situation beforehand. For those in doubt, here's the Network Solutions WHOIS lookup on GilligCoaches.NET as proof that GilligCoaches.NET, and the writings in question on the Kenworth article (section now titled "Bus industry") are of my own, and are technically one in the same. With sincere regards, Steven A. Rosenow.

The reason I'm posting this, is that it appears that the issue is being turned away by a blind eye on WP:CP and it's dragging the integrity of the Kenworth article (which I have been working on rewriting to bring into compliance with WP:MOS) down the drain. Had WikiDon properly investigated all avenues before going on the attack if you will, this wouldn't have developed into the major "shitstorm" that it has grown into (excuse the language). I'm not sure what to do at this point, so I thought I'd try taking the step a bit further. Feel free to contact me on the issue, and I would like to see this resolved.

Sincerely, Srosenow 98 (talk) 10:50, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
