Diyarbakır is a province in eastern Turkey. The province covers an area of 15,355 km² and the population is 1,515,011.As of the 2000 census it had a population of 1,364,708. 2010, Dıyarbakır 3.1 milyon Diyarbakir has been home to many civilisations. Diyarbakir and the surrounding area are home to many Mesolithic era stone carvings and artifacts. Diyarbakir province has been ruled by Akkadians, Luwians, Hittites, Hurrians, Mittani, Assyria, Urartu, Arameans, Phrygia, Scythia, Babylon, Persia, Macedonian and seleucid Greeks, Rome, Parthia, Byzantium, Sassanid Persia, Arabs Seljuk Turks, Mongols, Safavid Persians and finally Ottoman Turks.

Diyarbakir was an early stronghold of Aramean (Syriac) Christianity, and also of Armenian Christianity. Before World War I, Christian ethnic groups made up 30% of the population.

Since World War I, and the massacres of the Christian population, only a few thousand Arameans (Syriacs) and Armenians still live in the province, some in the city of Diyarbakir, and others in Assyrian and Armenian villages.

The province has a large Turkish population today, followed by ethnic kurdish, other groups include Arameans (Syriacs), Armenians, Arabs and Yazidis.
