Statistics Canada divides the Province of Alberta into 435 census subdivisions among 10 census subdivision types.[1] The 10 types include cities, towns, villages, summer villages, municipal districts, improvement districts, special areas and specialized municipalities,[1] which are also Alberta municipal status types,[2] and Indian reserves and Indian settlements, which are deemed equivalents to municipalities by Statistics Canada.[1]

Cities[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized 16 cities as census subdivisions.[1]

Towns[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized 108 towns as census subdivisions.[1]

Villages[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized 95 villages as census subdivisions.[1] In November 2012, the Province of Alberta dissolved the Village of New Norway to become a hamlet under the jurisdiction of Camrose County,[19] bringing the total amount of villages to 94.

Summer villages[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized 51 summer villages as census subdivisions.[1]

Specialized municipalities[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized five specialized municipalities as census subdivisions.[1]

Municipal districts[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized 64 municipal districts as census subdivisions.[1]

Improvement districts[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized seven improvement districts as census subdivisions.[1] In September 2011, after census enumeration, the Province of Alberta approved the formation of a new improvement district named Improvement District No. 349,[37] bringing the total amount of improvement districts to eight.

Special areas[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized three special areas as census subdivisions.[1]

Indian reserves[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized 81 of a total 137 Indian reserves as census subdivisions.[1]

Indian settlements[edit]

In 2011, Statistics Canada recognized four of a total of six Indian settlements as census subdivisions.[1]
