Sanders / Saunders

[edit]

I'm going to disagree with this - "not similar enough for hatnote":

Steve, Steven, or Stephen Sanders
-vs-
Steve, Steven, or Stephen Saunders

I moved it up to a hatnote because they couldn't be more similar!

What do you think? 92.4.41.73 (talk) 22:31, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree with this revert too. Most of the links to Stephen Saunders (musician) were piped to read Steve Saunders. 92.4.41.73 (talk) 22:39, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

COULD BOYEYN3 PLEASE CONDESCEND TO JUSTIFY HIS CHOICE OF REPEATEDLY DELETING MY VERIFIED INFORMATION on Stucken and William Ratcliff and refrain from threatening me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.144.46.86 (talk) 18:36, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You were not threatened, I explained to you the policy of 3RR and gave you a link to it. I've also politely explained several times in my edit summaries what the problem is: we don't add entries to disambiguation pages unless they have wikilinks, and they should be a wikilink to an article on that person (preferably) or to an article with a significant mention of this person. I suggested that you looked at MOS:DABRL which explains this, or MOS:DAB which gives a general account of what a disambiguaiton page and how it is set out. PLease read them rather than take offence, or create an article on the topic. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 11:10, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

EXCUSE-ME

[edit]

Let me ask something: why do you think that a WWII RAF (Royal Air Force, British Air Force) called Joseph Berry does not exist? He is REAL! And He is MORE important than YOU! Go search on the web! He downed 60 V-1 Flying bombs and downed 3 Aircraft (2 Messerschmitt Me 210 and 1 Ju 88). Also, he scored another probable victory against the flying bombs, making him the Ace of Aces of England in WWII. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Swawdsd (talkcontribs) 18:34, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Samuel Charles Whitbread, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article that does not provide sufficient context to identify its subject. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. Speedy deletion declined: Kevin riley

[edit]

Hello Boleyn2. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Kevin riley, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: it's not an implausible typo, they are cheap, and per WP:R#KEEP we usually keep these wrong-capitalisation ones. DABs

[edit]

Hi. You deleted an external link on a DAB. I noticed this is consistent with Wikipedia policy. However, would you support a reform to this policy, to allow external links to be placed on DABs when no WP article yet exists for that subject? It would be quite helpful to users to have such links if no other info on that subject exists on WP.--152.3.128.164 (talk) 15:09, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Personally, I wouldn't support this, mmainly because I think the pages would become overwhelmed by them - I've seen pages where people have tried to be helpful by Googling a name, and adding every mention of someone with this name to the dab, most of whom wouldn't meet notability guidelines. Also it does go against what a disambiguation page, which is essentially an index of existing articles on WP, with the odd redlink if it's linked in articles. If someone finds nothing on Wikipedia, then they will usually use a search engine, which is the best place for them to try in these circumstances.

I'm guessing that you're hoping the external links would encourage people to create articles on these subjects? There are other ways to do this, such as requesting the article be created, or checking for/creating links to the person in existing articles and then adding the entry to the disambiguation page.

However, you could raise this at Wikiproject:Disambiguation for discussion. Best wishes, Boleyn2 (talk) 07:26, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On another point, you created a link to a DAB redirect, citing WP:INTDABLINK which seems require the opposite. Have I misunderstood it? - Fayenatic (talk) 20:12, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The guidelines on this link say that we should link to the title that includes the text "(disambiguation)", even if that's a redirect – for example, link to the redirect America (disambiguation) rather than the target page at "America". (If the redirect does not yet exist, create it and tag it with {R to disambiguation page}.) This helps distinguish accidental links to the disambiguation page from intentional ones.

It's a very small edit, but it does have some advantages. Best wishes, Boleyn2 (talk) 07:26, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oops - you're right, thanks! - Fayenatic (talk) 22:07, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

May I have your advice on how to clean up the page, please - not sure what's wrong.--Peter I. Vardy (talk) 12:50, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Obviously the intro doesn't meet the normal criteria, I wasn't sure if the 'works of...' section at the bottom should be there, there are categories which aren't disambiguation-related so shouldn't be there. I think that's about all I could see, but I wanted a second opinion as it's leading to list pages, and I didn't see it as a 'normal' dab. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 15:57, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion at 23rd Street – Ely Avenue / Court Square (New York City Subway)‎;

[edit]

You wrote, not an article, so shouldn't have this detail; there should only be enough to differentiate between entries; however you deleted the only thing that differentiates the entries. This dab page is a stop-gap measure until the articles can be merged together.

Your comment seems to be unsupported by the page you've linked. There is nothing that says we can't link two items in a hat note to avoid an unnecessary visit to a disambiguation page.

Please see also MOS:DAB#Break rules. Since I've recently moved the hockey commentator to the base page, the most useful thing to do for our readers is to use the hatnote to link to the other two uses. Forcing them to click twice to get where they want to be is undesirable. –xenotalk 12:43, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regimental disambiguation pages

[edit]

Your recent edits leading to things like this are completely useless - the point of these pages was to stop the confusion that resulted from only listing one or two cases of the same name, as people invariably then assumed those were the only cases. In most cases, the redlinks aren't yet linked to because I haven't got around to fixing the links in the articles - I've just spent ten minutes "fixing" the redlinks at 93rd Regiment of Foot (disambiguation), for example, which is now just the same as it was before but now "legitimate" in that they all have an inbound link.

I've also spent ten minutes reading the MoS on disambiguation pages - would you be happy if I marked these as set indices? They're all of a very narrowly defined type (different instances of corporate bodies of the same organisation and general form) and it might stop this sort of confusion in future. Shimgray | talk | 15:55, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

These pages don't meet the requirements for a dab, not until articles are created or incoming redlinks are created. As for set indices, I know next to nothing about them, so am quite happy for you to change it to this if you've looked into the requirements and it meets them. If you're on the case, I won't edit these pages and will leave them to you. Best wishes, Boleyn3 (talk) 18:02, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi, I have a question if you don't mind. I put this on because at Serial killer it was mentioned and when I wikilinked this George Russell he wasn't there. He doesn't have his own article unfortunately. So my question is this, how do I or should I wikilink his name or should I leave it without one? Thanks in advance for your time, --CrohnieGalTalk 17:48, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see what's happened. He wasn't wikilinked at serial killer properly, the link went to the disambigaution page (I've changed this). I think the entry also had an external link, which doesn't belong on these pages. Disambiguation pages are essentially indexs of articles, so there is little point in adding entries without articles. However, they are allowed if there is significant mention of the person in another article (see MOS:DABRL), in this case, the entry could possibly read George Russell, serial killer. However, it still doesn't really meet the guidelines because his name is only mentioned in the article; no one looking for information on him there would find any, and it would be a waste of their time. You could add it as it's written above and I wouldn't remove it, but it wouldn't be useful or meet the guidelines. Alternatively, you could create a short article on him or add it to WP:Requested articles for someone else to create. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 18:00, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I will take a look at this. I appreciate your help on this. Thanks again, --CrohnieGalTalk 19:27, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AIV

[edit]

Hello, while we appreciate the time you spent filing an AIV report about User:Indaprogram, however, a user can't be classified as a vandal-only account after just one single edit. How do we expect him to mend his ways if you report him for an indefinite ban before he had a chance to read the warning and act on it. He might as well do so, for all we know. A vandal only account needs to have at least a couple of edits and warnings before he can be banned. Best Regards, Snowolf How can I help? 16:54, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. I've reported about 20 editors for vandalism only accounts when they have only one edit, and this is only the second time they haven't been given an indefinite block. I think there's a variety of opinion because many editors think that inserting something like 'he is gay' in the middle of an article, when they've never contributed anything positive to WP, means that there is next to no chance that the person will ever become an editor who makes good contributions. I agree with this, but can clearly see your point of view. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 17:19, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As a counterpoint, this user eventually went on to make many constructive edits. –xenotalk 17:22, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I have a very similar complaint. When reporting to AIV, make sure they've had proper warnings- if the vandalism is serious, you can use a 4im but neither of the two you just reported fall into that category. To qualify as a VOA, first, their edits must actually be vandalism and second, unless the vandalism is serious- like BLP issues- they should have been given at least one serious warning. If you'd take a little more time over this in future, it would save a lot of time further down, especially while the AIV bots are down and the board has to be clerked manually. Thanks for your time. While you were acting according to policy in removing this item from the dab page Gul, it did not require much work to check the citation and add it to a suitable target page. Can you give a look at Yakutia please? I think it should be reverted back to a redirect. -- Magioladitis (talk) 06:53, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. A redirect looks fine; if the airline is commonly known just as Yakutia rather than Yakutia Airline, then a hatnote on the page Yakutia redirects to would be enough to avoid confusion. From what I've seen, it doesn't even need that. Best wishes, Boleyn3 (talk) 09:19, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Collection Portrait of James Butler

[edit]
The Royal Collection lists the portrait as belonging to 1530-35 (http://www.elizabethan-portraits.com/Various_2.htm). Taking the maximum year (1535), this means that James Butler (b. 1496) would have been 39 years old while Thomas Boleyn (b. 1477) would have been 57 years old. By 1539 he was dead. Look at the portrait: does it really lok like a man about to die in 4 years time? Or is it more like a man of 39? You know the answer. Laurel Lodged (talk) 22:16, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect in disambiguation pages

[edit]

As I read MOS:DAB, which you refer to, the link should not be to a redirect page. It says: "redirects should not be used in disambiguation pages" and "[a] redirect should be used to link to a specific section of an article only if the title of that section is more or less synonymous with the disambiguated topic", which is not the case when it comes to the link to Lewis Hamilton's personal life, which Anthony Hamilton (manager) is redirected to. Copying within Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi. You may already know this, being quite experienced, but since Corensearchbot tagged duplication at Ovda (Israel), I thought best to drop you a reminder. When you copy content from one article to another, you do need to credit the source in order to avoid copyright infringement (as our contributors do not relinquish their copyright, but merely liberally license their text for reuse, provided content is attributed). It seems that this article includes content that was contributed to Ovda by other contributors. I'll go ahead and provide the necessary attribution here. Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia sets out the basic process, for future reference. If you have any questions, please let me know at my talk page. I agree that this stub needed a word or two more in its opening sentence. This was on a dab and didn't meet MOS:DABRL so I created a stub rather than remove it as it seemed to clearly be notable. That's how the majority of the articles I've created have come about, my prioirty isn't to create a full article. Usually they've been expanded and referenced very quickly by others, but I keep an eye on them and add it if it isn't done by someone who knows more about the subject than I do. 11:05, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello. The section I feel applies t9o these situations is |Delta may refer to:

  • (correct) Delta Quadrant, in the Star Trek universe ([[Delta Quadrant]], in the ''Star Trek'' universe)
  • (incorrect) Delta Quadrant, in the Star Trek universe ([[Galactic quadrant#Delta Quadrant|Delta Quadrant]], in the ''Star Trek'' universe)
  • The above technique should be used only when the link is the subject of the line, not when it is in the description. For description sections, consider piping instead.

I feel the example is similar to the edits in question, however the piping section on MOS:DAB seems to say the opposite. I won't be reverting your edits and thanks for encouraging me to look again at the guidelines. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 11:05, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Surnames

[edit]

Hi. I would like to ask your opinion in two things concerning {{surname}}. As far as I understand surname pages are SIA.

  • Do you think an orphan surname page would make sense? The policy says that SIA can be orphan.
  • Do we expect to see references to SIAs or not? DAB pages should not have references.

Thanks in advance. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:58, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding was that if it's a short page simply listing people with the surname, it should be entitled 'List of...' and be treated as a list article (see MOS:DAB), but if there is information on the origin of the name etc. as well, then it is an article, and as such would merit references and an orphan tag could be applied. However, when I got your message and tried to find a policy for this, all I could find was on MOS:DAB and it was more what a surname page is not, i.e. that it is not a dab. I have read more experienced editors say that they are articles and they usually do have references but as I say, I couldn't verify this and I think it could really do with being clarified. Sorry if that's not very clear! Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 11:05, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: James Morris (British politician). The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article James Morris (British politician) has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Please add your source when you create a new stub like Crosby Hall. You must have found the information somewhere - unless it's your Original Research in which case it does not belong in Wikipedia. And can you tell us anything else about the building - does it still exist, where more precisely is/was it, etc? Thanks. PamD (talk) 07:30, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The sources, as they are for nearly all articles I write, are the Wikipedia links to the page. I don't know anything about the building other than what I've written unfortunately. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 07:33, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia itself does not count as a source. The articles you use to write your articles should have sources themselves. If it's something online which you can check, then check it and cite it. If not, then don't create the article. What you are adding to Wikipedia is a stream of unsourced articles. Please stop doing so. I've just found another: Elizabeth Killigrew, Viscountess Shannon. PamD (talk) 10:11, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on John Bond (1802–1844) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. — Tanvir 14:35, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Thomas Harris (Serjeant-at-Law) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

New article

[edit]

Hi Boleyn, what do you think of my latest article: Winifred Wells? Would you happen to have a date or even a year of birth for her? Thanks.--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 13:29, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, it's an interesting article, I don't remember having read about her before. I found she was mentioned in a couple of my books, but only exactly the same information you've added, and a Google search didn't uncover anything either. Boleyn (talk) 14:58, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I presume the baby to whom Pepys referred to was stillborn. It's interesting that Charles paid her money at regular intervals. I wonder if the baby was farmed out?--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 16:41, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.17

[edit]

Hello Boleyn,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

Hi there! Yes, I will add more categories. :) But I'm only 16 minutes into creating the article so there's that. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:13, 18 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was doing NPP and Luciana Galvez came in the queue. In looking through the history I saw you had created it. I think Wikipedia, in general, takes a redirect approach to fictional characters these days but figured since you'd made the page in the first place that you would be well positioned to patrol it - should it be marked reviewed or sent to AfD for a discussion to restore the redirect? Proposed deletion of Oculus Rift (disambiguation)

[edit]

Hello,

I saw that you proposed deletion of Oculus Rift (disambiguation). Is there a better way to clarify the difference between Oculus Rift as a line of headsets and the first device in the line?

Thank you.Anton.bersh (talk) 21:48, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

First, thanks for the note about the stub tagging, I honestly forgot to do that, and have added the related stub tag to the article. Second, I don't quite understand what you mean by me not responding to your messages? I see I addressed your concerns, and noted so on this page (see User_talk:Boleyn#New_article_referencing). 2018-19 Adelaide United FC Reserves season page

[edit]

Hi Boleyn, I started creating a page of 2018-19 Adelaide United FC Reserves season. I accidently clicked "Publish page" instead of "Show preview", and there are no references in the article. I request a deletion of the page, so I can create the article with references into it.

Catherine Parr

[edit]

There is a person vandalizing Catherine Parr's page and insisting her death date is the 7th. Her own tomb says her death date is the 5th of September. I could use some help on the page/talk page. Or if you could help me find someone to intervene I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. -- Lady Meg (talk) 20:47, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look at it, Lady Meg, no worries. Thanks for keeping a good eye on the page, Boleyn (talk) 20:48, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As you know, I LOVE Catherine and want to make sure she's taken care of on here. Thanks! -- Lady Meg (talk) 22:00, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Whoever this woman is, she has now reverted to hostility. As always, I would appreciate some help on the talk page whenever you can get to it. Thanks. -- Lady Meg (talk) 23:30, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've commented there. Boleyn (talk) 14:47, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's another two lies. No-one is vandalising the page and no-one is insisting that she died on the 7th. Celia Homeford (talk) 09:30, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The "Tribunal de Paris" article

[edit]

About the Tribunal de Paris and Wohnpark Alterlaa article being moved to the draftspace: The very least you could have done is go to the Translators Available page and ask somebody listed on that page to aid in the expansion of the articles you just moved to the draftspace using the info for their foreign-language counterpart articles. The reason I never bothered to do this myself is because I am worried that such editors may not be active or may be preoccupied by something else and not have the time. Jim856796 (talk) 04:05, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I went to the trouble of sending you four or five messages - all of which you weren't polite enough to answer. I also looked myself. The article is in draftspace and can easily be worked on there and moved back when it's ready. Boleyn (talk) 07:13, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Serbia - GAN

[edit]

Hello Boleyn, I would like to ask for your help regarding Serbia's (I hope near) future GA nomination.

Which parts could be improved and all in all do you think that there are arguments in favour of the nomination?

Thank you, Mm.srb (talk) 15:43, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Mm.srb, well done on your hard work on this article. I haven't had any involvement in GA work, I'm mainly involved at the earlier stages. However, I've looked it over and it looks very comprehensive and well-written - I have no suggestions for improvement. Thanks again, Boleyn (talk) 07:15, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you kind sir. Best regards, Mm.srb (talk)
