Paderewski

Sorry I wasn't clear - space limitation in edit summaries don't have much room. The Wikipedia:MOS#Images goes into some detail on this. Basically, the article isn't the place for a gallery of photos - that's what Commons is for. Of course, a few illustations in the article are OK, but the text should always be dominant. Here are the pertinent guidelines:

  • Images should be inside the major section to which they relate (within the section defined by the most recent level 2 heading)
  • Use Commons to link to more images on Commons, wherever possible. The use of galleries should be in keeping with Wikipedia's image use policy.

I'm glad you've taken an interest in Paderewski. I consider him to be a far greeater pianist than he's usually given credit for.

Awa Marie Coll Seck

Regarding your recent new article about Awa Marie Coll Seck, I just wanted to let you know that we already had an article about her at the title Awa Marie Coll-Seck. I'm not familiar enough with her to know whether the version with or without the hyphen between Coll and Seck is the more appropriate title, and I haven't compared the two articles in enough depth to know whether there's information present in one that isn't in the other, but we don't normally keep multiple articles about the same person at different spellings — so the two pages should actually be merged into one article at whichever is the more correct title. Instead of deleting it, it would actually be better to redirect it to the other title by replacing it with the text
#REDIRECT [[Awa Marie Coll-Seck]]
after you're done moving the information. For one thing, there are a couple of links from other articles to the unhyphenated version that you created — if the page is deleted, then those will become empty redlinks again, but if it's redirected to the title that we're keeping, then they'll link properly to that article. Idea Lab medical photos discussion post-mortem

Not posting this there as it is not on the actual topic, but rather a reply to your reply to my post. I think you have misunderstood my intention there. What I was saying is that I could not see any point in my continued involvement in the discussion because you seemed to be all alone in your position, which appeared to be becoming more extreme as the conversation continued. I never said you had to stop discussing it, or that you needed permission to have begun the conversation, and I have no idea what made you think I had said that.

Wikipedia works by building consensus, even in the idea lab. I happen to agree with you about the value of bolded voting in such a conversation, but voting and seeking consensus are not the same thing. We seemed to be moving further, not nearer, from coming up with anything useful, and nobody seemed to agree with your position at all, hence "the rest of us" refers to the rest of the users in the conversation, not the entire body of Wikipedia editors.

When I'm talking, what I say is what I mean, I don't screw around with hidden subtexts and innuendo, so looking for them in my remarks was a waste of your time. And I'm not trying to yell at you or embarrass you by commenting here either, just hoping to avoid similar miscommunication in the future. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:46, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

You sent me a bunch of warnings for various articles, including one on Ida B. Wells that referenced a joke. There were no jokes in my edits of the Ida B. Wells article. As for the rest, you made minor changes to photo captions, or removed well referenced material from articles. There was no vandalism, or POV problems. All the things you changed were well referenced. If you want to make a minor change, as you did on some occasions, fine, do it. But I can't see any reason to take the hacksaw approach you did. It is obvious that you went down my contrib list and took a shot at each one.

Girls' games and toys

Thanks for your message. The main point is that the article had originally been allocated to categories that are used as parents or roots, designed to hold only main subject matter articles in addition to housing a system of sub-categories. This article does not belong in category:Games as the category page's notes make clear. Copyright on Wikipedia

Hello. :) I quite frequently work on copyright issues on Wikipedia, and wanted to drop by and explain our approach to using source materials after your note here was brought to my attention.

I'm afraid that you cannot copy content like this from a copyrighted source:

There are many plants in the Botanic Gardens whose reported medicinal properties are unknown, or at least not widely known in Dominica; but these plants are known in the other islands, or in other parts of the world, for specific medicinal properties.

Doing so is not permitted under our copyright policy: Wikipedia:Copyrights. Aside from brief, clearly marked quotations used transformatively, you are only allowed to copy from previous sources if you can prove that they are public domain or compatibly licensed, and even then you cannot copy without indicating that you are doing so to avoid Wikipedia:Plagiarism. Otherwise, you must write content completely from scratch, being careful to avoid closely paraphrasing. This can sometimes be challenging and may seem illogical when the content is well written by a source, but it is required by policy. While you are free to use the information, you will in most cases need to use your own words and structure to convey it.

The duplication detector is overly sensitive, but where it finds limited duplication, there is often close paraphrasing around it. For instance, the duplication detector found matched the words " islands and the original". These four words out of context may not look like an issue; in context, they reveal a problem. Looking at the surrounding content, we see in the article the following:

Medicinal teas in Dominica have their origins primarily in the cultures of African slaves brought to the islands and the original indigenous Carib inhabitants.

The source says "In Dominica, the medicinal uses of plants have their origin primarily in the cultures of African slaves brought to these islands and the original Carib inhabitants." This is not rewritten from scratch as there are only superficial changes to the text.

Whether or not the history of the article needs to be deleted depends on how extensive the copied and closely paraphrased content is. We do not risk inadvertent restoration of material that violates our copyright policy. I don't have time right now to review how extensive the copying is, but it is important either way that the copying and close paraphrasing be dealt with as soon as possible. Please review Wikipedia:Copy-paste for some general guidance and edit the article promptly to remove the copied and closely paraphrased material. Hi. I find lists befuddling, too. :) I had started creating a guideline on them at User:Moonriddengirl/Copyright in lists, but things are a bit up in the air right now following some advice from the Wikimedia Foundation attorney that we should be more conservative with those than we have been. It may nevertheless contain some information you might find useful. :) There are two basic questions you should start with: (a) is the data in the table/list/chart creative? (b) is the presentation of the data creative? If you answer no to both, it's probably okay to copy; if you answer yes to (a), you're limited to fair use. Template:Did you know nominations/Girls' games and toys

See T:TDYK#Where is my hook?: "Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances."

Your hook was 30 days old and the discussion had gone stale with unresolved issues. If you had something to say about Kiefer's rejection of the article on 21st November, you had plenty of time in the last seven days to say it. You didn't do anything to the article in that time, or comment further at the nomination, although you had been editing elsewhere, so I closed the nomination. I wasn't going to waste my time working out whether Kiefer's point was a good one or a bad one – that's your job as nominator. Nominations can't stay open for ever just on the off-chance that the nominator might return to his/her nomination and respond to comments at some point in the future. T:TDYK has enough old nominations as it is, and the aim is to showcase new content. If you want to ask the DYK community at large whether the nomination ought to be re-opened, then ask at WT:DYK and if there's consensus to reopen it, then so be it. Not very efficient in my opinion." (1) No-one made you nominate the article at T:DYK in the first place; if you don't like the way it works, then either push to make it better or leave it alone. (2) Who said you had to check in every day? Checking in once in the last seven days would have been enough; that's not much to ask. (3) There are no deadlines placed on reviewers because reviewing is a voluntary yet necessary act. Reviewers are in short supply given the history of DYK over the last few months. Out of interest, what would your sanction be for no reviewers reviewing a nomination within X days - the hook is deemed automatically successful? Well, that isn't going to happen, is it? Every page has a "watch" button. Users can set an option in their preferences to add pages that they create/edit to their watchlists. As for the history of DYK over the last few months, try reading WT:DYK and the last few archives to get a sense of the arguments that have been going on. I stopped going to DYK for quite some time until the dust had settled. I don't think DYK is perfect, but many of the problems it faces are symptomatic of Wikipedia as a whole - backlogs, arguments about copyvios/close paraphrasing, arguments about reliability of sources, arguments about its purpose... Major women's sport leagues in North America

Salam alaykoum OttawaAC, If you want, I can write you in French language. (It is my second language after the hebrew). Bonjour, j'espère qu'il ne fait pas trop froid aujourd'hui pour toi à Ottawa. Je te remercie de t'impliquer dans l'écriture de la page sur les grandes ligues féminines en Amérique du Nord. J'ai écrite le chapitre sur le hockey sur la glace. Ouf. J'ai faite tôt ce matin , des regroupements dans le texte Major women's sport leagues in North America , j’espère que mon geste ne te froisse pas. Si cela ne te convient pas nous pouvons revenir à la première version et ce sans problème pour moi. J'ai regroupé les championnats SIC qui étaient chacune seules dans leur discipline sportive respective (Cross Country, Curling, Field Hockey, Track and Field, Volleyball, Wrestling). Les ligues étaient seules dans leur discipline sportive contrairement aux ligues de Basketball ( 3 ligues) de hockey sur glace (3 ligues), de soccer (6 ligues), et de softball (2 ligues). J'ai tout regroupé les liques du SIC dans la section Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women's championships in canadian university athletics. Il y a aussi une section américaine NCAA women's championships in americain college athletics du même type pour les différentes ligues étudiantes de la NCAA. Je ne sais pas si une personne américaine va écrire sur les nombreuses ligues féminines de la NCAA. Si oui nous pourrions alors regrouper dans le même chapitre d'une discipline sportive les ligues SIC et NCAA. Un peu comme le chapitre sur le hockey sur glace ou sur le Basketball. Bon j'ai aussi mise une annonce dans les projets pour avoir des contributrices sur les autres sports WikiProject Basketball, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Women's football task force, WikiProject Football/United States and Canada task force. Espérant que des personnes américaines nous aideront car je connais assez mal les autres sports comme le basketball. J'ai discuté brièvement avec Clavdia chauchat qui est avec nous dans le WikiProject Women's sport. Elle est passionnée de football féminin (soccer féminin) mais ne connait pas beaucoup le soccer féminin des États-Unis. Je croyais qu'elle était américaine... mais il semble que non. Il m'arrive de me tromper sur l'origine des gens , surtout sur le net. Je vais poursuivre mon travail un peu plus tard car j'ai trois match de hockey sur glace à couvrir (je prend au moins 200 photos par match mais seulement quelques unes sont publiés) un mercredi soir à McGill, un vendredi soir à l'aréna Ville Mont-Royal et un autre samedi à l'aréna St-Louis de Montréal. Je devrai sortir quelques belles photos pour les pages de hockey féminin .... Disability in literature

Hi I've just read the Disability in children's literature article that you mostly wrote. I notice that WP does not have a more general "Disability in literature" article. The very brief literature section in Disability in the arts could also be expanded.

Would you like to collaborate with me in this? I think we should first try to expand the section in the Arts article then take that as a "seed" to create a draft for Disability in literature.
