Hi SpaceInnovader, Greetings, I have reviewed the article and added two references. Pls note that most of your source are primary even with my added reference, the article might subject for deletion. Kindly source independent reliable source (such as local newspaper coverage of this event) for verification to further strengthen the article survival. For reliable source see here WP:RS and for verification see here WP:V. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 12:50, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, SpaceInnovader. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Paris-Versailles Race, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

CASSIOPEIA(talk) 12:55, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, SpaceInnovader. I removed the proposed deletion tag from Paris-Versailles Race because I found substantial coverage in newspapers, both in French and English, suggesting that the race is notable according to the standards applied in the English language Wikipedia. I have added a few of those sources. Please note the importance of providing independent reliable sources in establishing notability. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.--Arxiloxos (talk) 18:34, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SpaceInnovader, I would like to inform you that this is your SECOND creation page which you have copied and pasted in translation of the content from Wiki FR to Wiki En page - see here [1] . Please not proper attribution is needed and do note please do use your own word to create/edit content with independent reliable source for not commit plagiarism as you have done. Pls see proper attribution her WP:PATT, reliable source WP:RS, verification WP:V. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 11:46, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks CASSIOPEIA. I read WP:PATT after the last article and put a note on talk page using the translated page tag referencing the German article and mentioned the translation in my edit summary as detailed in WP:TFOLWP. Did I need to do something else? Please give some more guidance. SpaceInnovader (talk) 11:53, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi SpaceInnovader, Greetings and thank you for the question. If you use other editor work/content (copy and paste) inregarless the content is from Wiki English to Wiki English page or Wiki xx to Wiki English page you need to mention in the edit summary prior you save the edit ONLY IF the copy and paste content is a short sentence. For content more than that, one should create / add /edit the content with his/her word to avoid plagiarism and same go to all inline citation for source used. For you case, pls do not commit the same mistake again. You would use the source/reference but write with you own word. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 12:14, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, if you want to write a message to other editor in "your talk page", you need to ping them so they could be notified. I noticed you wrote to me as I watch your talk page since I had written to you prior. To ping someone pls put this prior you start the message {{ping|editor user name}} . For example to ping me put {{ping|CASSIOPEIA}} and sign off by place 4 tildes after you finish the message. I have sent you a welcome message, see top of your talk page, there are many topics would help you to edit Wikipedia and learn about Wikipedia guildlines and policy. For any questions you have about editing, you could post a message to WP:Teahouse, some helpful and friendly Wikipedia's will answer you questions. Have a good day. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 12:20, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @CASSIOPEIA: - I'll use that in the future! I don't fully understand your feedback about translation and plaguirsm, as in this case I did paraphrase the work of the German wiki it was not just a copy and paste edit (although the previous one mostly was). I'll ask at the teahouse before any new translations. SpaceInnovader (talk) 12:32, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In short you could use the source but write in your own word. Happy editing SpaceInnovader and good night. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 12:40, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lake gordon

[edit]

Please note that if you make idle thoughts on edit summaries - please also consider what already exists in the available articles - thanks JarrahTree 11:59, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I was looking through SW Tas pages and noticed that there were (or should be) a lot of pages mentioning the formation of Lake Pedder but no page giving a central summary. It currently links to the Lake Pedder page, but I don't think that's ideal or clear enough. Do you think that's a fair assessment? Spacepine (talk) 12:04, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a simple exercise. I am not sure what you mean by 'formation of Lake Pedder' - do you mean the New Lake Pedder, and the Gordon dam scheme? JarrahTree 12:38, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Gordon Dam Scheme (New Lake Pedder). Perhaps I'm naive - but wouldn't it just be a matter of writing the article, and summarising/linking to it in the appropriate locations? Spacepine (talk) 12:41, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
the material is already there - also the gordon dam protests (effectively synonymous with lake pedder) require something better than green left weekly for WP:RS. Youre not naive, the problem with all the south west tas things some people from the South West Tas conservation battles of the 1970s are dying off already, and there is a complicated, very complicated story around the personalities from the 1960s the 1970s into the 1980s and their various ways of writing about some of the issues - most of it unrelatable on something as open as wikipedia talk page - there are many cross linked issues with understanding the transition between the various tasmanian political parties and to what extent they were influenced by the power of the Hydro - and to what extent the groups of people from both tasmania and the mainland in dealing with intransigent thinking about things makes for very very interesting historiographical issues that could well be lost... and how this affects the nature of what is on wikipedia - what is in the histories of the Hydro and the rather pathetic histories from the opposition to the dams, is something that could take up vast amounts of time and space. The Gordon River Power Development scheme - and the category - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Gordon_River_power_development_scheme - could do with gordon dam protests - but...
consider: Brown, Suzie (2003-08-01), "Remote control: it's been two decades since the battle to save a wild, tempestuous river in deepest Tasmania managed to transform the vision of the Australian public and take centre stage in a federal election.(dam on Lower Gordon River would have obliterated Franklin River)", Habitat Australia, 31 (4), Australian Conservation Foundation: 8(2), ISSN 0310-2939

The thing is there are a number of things - the Gordon River dam - is the upper dam that flooded lake pedder - it was the lower gordon that was promoted by the Hydro to flood the Franklin. Gordon River - upper, Lower Gordon - never built. Some slippage occurs. JarrahTree 13:02, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Coffeeandcrumbs:. Your edit summary said "The previous edit was vandalism masked as a good faith edit". What made you think that? I changed it as per MOS:GNL. Although I accept the term "manned" can be appropriate for pre 1990 NASA missions, they have since updated their guidelines - Spacepine (talk) 13:49, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I'm a little bit offended. Please assume good faith in the future - and I'll assume the same of you - Spacepine (talk) 14:09, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You changed Donald Trump to Fatty Pumpkin.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 14:16, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ahahahaha, well that's on me! I use FoxReplace to make that substitution (and others) to make news articles more readable. Apparently it didn't just make a cosmetic change, it actually changed text on the page while I was editing! Thanks for catching it - will have to find another way to enjoy the news (my apologies if I offended your politics). Spacepine (talk) 14:28, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Richard Dry, without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 13:31, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Did you read my edit summary? So do you have any alternatives? Spacepine (talk) 13:49, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Paternity is not an excuse for adding honorifics - there are many alternatives available - qualifiers after the name (if indeed there are two articles in existence) can include birth dates, or occupations - there is no need for honorifics - just look at other subjects who have father and son or individuals with same names - the possibilities are actually quite considerable. JarrahTree 14:02, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I did. I am a very careful editor like we all should be. Competence is required. Please familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's policies, guidelines, and other naming conventions. There is no disambiguation necessary exactly because we do not have an article on the father. No alternative is necessary. You are welcome to use Richard Dry Sr. to create an article on the father.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 14:16, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers Jarrah, I made the change based on the MOS for distinguishing family members, not article titles. Will use the date option next time. Coffee, I was planning on making one for the father. I implied that that was my plan, but I'll be more precise in the future. Glad I waited for the communitites opinion before proceeding Spacepine (talk) 14:28, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Drop bear

[edit]

Why the addition of Marsupial lion to the "see Also" on Drop Bear? As best I know, it's not a hoax. Tarl N. (discuss) 12:42, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It filled the same ecological niche as the Drop Bear - i.e. Lay waiting in gums and droped on people's heads. Theorised by a BBC Doco to be an inspiration for it - cultural memory and all. Or just an outstanding coincidence. --Spacepine (talk) 01:55, 13 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And I disagree with referring to Drop Bears as a hoax. By wikipedias own definintion a hoax is "falsehood deliberately fabricated to masquerade as the truth. It is distinguishable from errors in observation or judgment, rumors, urban legends, pseudosciences, and April Fools' Day events that are passed along in good faith by believers or as jokes". I understand they're mostly synnonyms, but without quibbling too much over definitions, "hoax" has a connotation of malice or ill-will that "urban legend", mythical creature, mythical animal or legendary creature (all used in similar contexts) doesn't. Drop Bears are not described to children/tourists with ill-will. I appreciate the desire for clarity, but "hoax" does a poor job of describing a Drop Bear's place in Australian culture. --Spacepine (talk) 04:16, 13 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I took the reference back out. It has no place in an article about a hoax. And drop bears are a hoax, they are a tall tale used to confuse visitors. If you disagree with my reversion, take it to Talk:Drop bear. Regards, Tarl N. (discuss) 21:55, 13 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spacepine, any objection to running this DYK during July 16–24 (50th Anniversary of Apollo 11). It would be in very good company. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 20:54, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great :) Good work with collating all the space related GA/FA articles btw --Spacepine (talk) 11:48, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You! It has been fun. Just counting the days with anticipation. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 13:35, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It might be too late. @Yoninah and Cwmhiraeth: Could we pool back this DYK and hold for July? --- Coffeeandcrumbs 13:18, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't mind running it later, but what does it have to do with the Apollo missions? Meanwhile, they have more than enough Apollo-specific hooks to run that day. Yoninah (talk) 14:31, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine. We have enough for July 21. Let it run. Thanks! --- Coffeeandcrumbs 20:29, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Molniya orbit

[edit]

Hey, Spacepine! Just wanted to call out the second paragraph of the Molniya_orbit#Molniya_constellations section, which doesn't include a citation. To be confident that no one will ding this before it appears on the main page in a few days, would you be able to find a citation for that para? Sorry to nitpick! (ETA: I'd have done it myself, but I have zero expertise in this subject and would likely screw something up.) --valereee (talk) 14:39, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah no worries, it's a supported by pretty much everything - done --Spacepine (talk) 13:44, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Hi there, I've taken the time to review your article, which needs only a few small changes, and I'm a bit astonished you've not even acknowledged that a review is in progress. Why would you submit an article to GA, take up people's time, and then abandon the work? I'm a bit flummoxed, honestly, but would be glad to hear from you now. A simple statement that you'll be working on it shortly, or that you've decided to abandon it, would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Chiswick Chap (talk) 22:12, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Chiswick, thanks for reviewing the article - your time is very much appreciated! Regardless of whether this succeeds the GA process your notes will go towards improving the article. Chopping VA5 Bios

[edit]

What areas do you feel most comfortable chopping? When the move to reallocate 2500-5000 bios passes (and I reckon it is a when), which areas need to be cut more than others? (Some areas are only 5x larger than VA4 and some are much more than 5x larger). pbp 13:32, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I see two options:
  1. Cut all existing bios equally
  2. Assuming a 5k cut, make all areas 3.6x larger than VA4, with the excess allocated to Miscellaneous (for a total of 800).
I prefer the first option --Spacepine (talk) 22:22, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Among bios, where do you feel most qualified to chop? For me, it's American political leaders. Sometime this week, I'm going to prepare what American political leaders (or political leaders and jurists) could look like at sizes of 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150. One of the other questions we need to explore is what "full sets" of leaders we want and which we can live without. pbp 14:50, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm gonna leave it for a week or two in case someone else wants to weigh in.
Happy to cut anything, but I'll start with the sciency ones. Idc about "full sets", my !vote is scale up a different criteria. Best of luck/enjoyment finding a leader list you're happy with. --Spacepine (talk) 03:12, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Chen Qiushi.png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Chen Qiushi.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. GZWDer (talk) 20:18, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked, and taking some time away

[edit]

I've been blocked.

It was a bold edit with consequences. I didn't expect an indef block, and will take some time over the next few weeks or months to read policy and mull it over. FYI admins: My preliminary policy reading shows that I was cut-and-dry in the wrong. I should have sent an email instead. It didn't occur to me at the time though, because (to explain, not excuse) emails are slow and I didn't like the idea of any side channel communication on wiki. I'm in the process of refining that view.

I'm under the impression that this block can be appealed, but since I haven't been active recently anyway, I'll take it as a cue to extend my wikibreak.

In case I don't come back, thank-you all for this experience.

I'm proud of the contributions that I made, especially in the Spaceflight area. 2,432 edits, 4 GAs and 7 DYKs feels like somehow both an impressive resume, and the mere beginnings of competence. Ultimately, I think the biggest thing is just contributing to the online culture of free knowledge. It's certainly given back; helping me grow my technical, research, writing and interpersonal skills.

Thanks again, and bye for now.

Request reason:

I was banned for outing over a year ago. See discussion at WP:AN and my original response to the block (and precipitating oversighted edit) for context. I understand that what I did was against policy, and if I come across a similar situation in the future I'll send an email instead. I don't plan on making major edits in the foreseeable future, but I'd like to be unblocked so I can freely fix the occasional typo. Spacepine (talk) 14:28, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
