Games

Geneshift is a new article about a newly launched game, and I was hoping you could offer some advice regarding whether or not such articles are acceptable. Does WP accept all new game launches, or does the standard WP:N apply? For example, when a new movie has completed production, has had a bit of press coverage, but has not yet been released, an AfD is a waste of time. Does the same apply to games? Atsme📞📧 13:02, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

@Atsme: I have no idea. I suggest asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games if the project doesn't have an obvious notability criteria page and there is nothing relevant at WP:OUTCOMES. Thryduulf (talk) 13:04, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

May I ask a question

Thryduulf, you're an admin, right? May I ask a question about something which I have a slight concern about? Wes Wolf Talk 02:29, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

You may ask, but I'm about to go to bed so can't guarantee a swift answer. Some of my talk page stalkers may be able to help before I return though. Thryduulf (talk) 02:35, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
I came across a non-admin page that contains an admin tool box which I thought was rather strange. But I may have stumbled across the answer by accident, so I feel the concern has eased slightly. Thank you for your response nevertheless. Sleep well. Wes Wolf Talk 02:42, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
Admin tools that depend upon certain rights (such as delete), when used by non-admins, will either do nothing or display a message saying why they can't be used. A number of admin tools are simply links to pages like WP:ANI where in theory anybody may comment; or are lists of pages in certain categories (such as some of those covered by Category:Administrative backlog) where often a WP:NAC can help to reduce the burden. Merely having links to such lists is not a crime.
If a non-admin is claiming to be an admin, that is another matter. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:18, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Tobi noms

You are making a very large number of nominations, and it's not clear that you've fully researched all of them. Be careful this doesn't become disruptive.
— Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2017_June_12#Bethesda_VR

He's been doing this (like this) for weeks. See the notifs on my talk page for the discussion pages where I have already complained of the same lack of discernment. I am no longer watching this page—ping if you'd like a response czar 17:01, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

ITN

You closed UN negotiations on a Nuclear-Weapon-Ban treaty. I understand that regularly results are posted as news. However, in this case the discussion itself is the event. It is as important as the expected conclusion of the contract, which will be only one further step within the process towards nuclear disarmament. This discussion is critically observed by governments, the civil society and the media. Hence, there is a public interest in the subject. Finally, there are results: specific proposals for steps towards disarmament and a draft treaty elaborated after the first round of negotiations in march 2017.

So, can I nominate the conference again as "Ongoing"? Regards --Jwollbold (talk) 10:46, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

It is only going to be suitable for ongoing if there are regular (daily-ish) substantial updates to the article. Unless I'm misunderstanding, the results are a combination of what came out of the last conference (not relevant to the newsworthiness of this conference), and what you expect to be achieved at this conference (nominate at the end when something has been achieved). If we posted the opening and incremental state of all the international conferences then ITN would be filled with nothing else, so we post significant results of the conferences when those results are encyclopaedic and get news coverage. Thryduulf (talk) 11:09, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
I will update the article regularly. But you convinced me that at present it is not relevant for the news section. I will nominate it again when really a treaty is concluded, or if discussions or proposals produce international headlines. --Jwollbold (talk) 11:36, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Thryduulf, after adoption of the treaty, the article has been proposed as head news again by another user. At present, the discussion develops rather polemic, dominated by personal opinions instead of objective relevance criteria. Would you mind to clarify - like me - the wikipedia rules, and express your opinion on posting the article to the news section? --Jwollbold (talk) 01:51, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

North Korea ITN

While I disagree with your rationale on the grounds that it's newer than the current lead item and that the trend was closer to supporting the further the debate progressed, clearly to undo again would be seen as flogging a dead horse or POV-pushing, and I will therefore respect your re-closure.

However as an aside, this diff seems a bit skewwhiff. StillWaitingForConnection (talk) 02:02, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Kenyan presidential election

You've expressed a desire for more prose in this article. What topics would you expect in this additional prose? I'm kind of drawing a blank on how to expand the article. pbp 19:53, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Take a look at other election articles that have been posted, but for some suggestions, sourced prose about the following would be good:
  • Voting - any notable incidents?
  • Results (not just a table) - any particularly big or unusual swings? Any surprise results?
  • Reactions (not just quotes)
  • What the new compositions of the senate and assembly will be, and what that will mean politically (if known).
  • Anything else noteworthy,
Remember that anyone following the link from the template will be wanting to read NPOV encyclopaedic prose that increases their knowledge about the election and its outcome. Until the article actually contains that it wont be linked. Thryduulf (talk) 20:04, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Killmayer citations

All works by Killmayer are published by Schott, where the details can be found. [1], click on Works, click on every individual work, see details and (another click) performances. Do we have to write them all individually? example: [2] - If yes, I simply don't have the time. In 2007, Schott also printed a list of his works. Much less detailed and not by genre, there's the link GND in authority control, [3], 277 publications, - I will never understand why we need extra references for published works, once we have the libraries. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:46, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

Basically, yes we do need individual references if the single reference doesn't cover them - one click away you might get away with but with so many clicks (and hence both not obviously covered and also greater potential for link rot) separate ones are required. Thryduulf (talk) 16:01, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
OK, you want me to write a citation for every work there is? - I could think of a less bot-like use of my time.
  • We could take the list of his works to a separate page, and leave what's already referenced.
  • I could write articles on one or the other of the works and get them to DYK, instead of ITN, as I did for Pierre Boulez, among others.
  • I could forget the whole thing and get back to writing on singers and churches. - It's just that - although I never met him - I feel some almost personal relationship to the "eigenwillige Persönlichkeit". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:18, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
  • Citation are important and ITN is meant to showcase examples of good quality content, which an article lacking references is not. It's not up to me to set your priorities. Thryduulf (talk) 22:24, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

I started another act of love, Song cycles (Killmayer), a work in progress (many more cycles, many more to expand). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:51, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Please look at the song cycles and tell me what you think, - I put in more love. - How are the recent deaths noms processed, - waiting until it is not recent anymore? - Next: Aloys Kontarsky, but first we will have to know when he died, - 22 August most likely. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:38, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

RFC closure

Do you normally close RFCs with just two votes and claim a consensus like this? At AFD at least they relist items for more comments, and since RY articles are set upon by the regulars, the whole point of RFC was to gain outside input. Objectively. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:01, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

RfC is not about counting votes, and there were more comments than votes. Thryduulf (talk) 22:17, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
Well yes, I'm fully aware of that thanks, but a Wikipedia-wise RFC should seek more input before being so hastily closed. Especially given the current overwhelming consensus against the current RY guidelines, taking these RFCs in isolation and acting on such brief and biased discussions is too hasty. But I suppose it doesn't stop another RFC on the same topic being started in the near future, especially given the scarcity of input. The Rambling Man (talk) 06:06, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
@The Rambling Man: If WP:RY is problematic, the thing to do is to sort that out at WT:RY, and not by having separate RfCs for each individual recent death. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:15, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
Redrose64 Well obviously. And that's already happening. In the meantime, we are bound by the RY "guideline" (!) so including items which are deemed to be explicitly against that "guideline" need RFCs. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:31, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

Mayweather v McGregor

On a pure nose count, I made it 20-13 in favour posting, which I think is often enough sufficient support for an item to get posted at ITN; there was significant opposition, but I didn't feel that it outweighed the support. I explained why I didn't feel the opposition had wholly made their case; essentially, the item was very much In The News and readers were obviously looking for it (given the page-view statistics quoted). I don't think dismissing that as being due to 'hype' really washes. It fits with the purpose of ITN, to bring attention to articles that readers may be looking for because they are in the news. Add to that that some of the support was on the grounds that the description of the fight itself was insufficient, and this had been rectified. I'm a bit bemused at the suggestion that the update is insufficient when this is the diff from the end of the match to now - with nearly 100 edits.

If I've really missed something here, I could be persuaded; I'm no boxing fan, after all, and my inclination is to join the IDONTLIKEIT chorus. But I can't really see a 'no consensus' outcome as the right reading of this. GoldenRing (talk) 10:43, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Irma strongest hurricane ever at landfall?

Since you just updated WP:ITN unilaterally, where is this piece of information coming from? Even if you don't count the Category 5 hurricanes that made landfall on the Mexican gulf coast as "Caribbean", you'd have to consider the 1924 Cuba hurricane which had lower pressure than Irma at landfall. Not to mention the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, which had a much lower pressure than Irma when making landfall at the Florida Keys. --bender235 (talk) 14:46, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

I did not update ITN "uniletarally", I added the blurb there was consensus for at WP:ITNC where no objection to the blurb had been raised. Changes to posted blurbs are best discussed at WP:ERRORS as this does not rely on any one admin being available (I'm not going to be around for a few hours now I suspect) and allows for consensus to develop where this is required. WP:EFH/failed requests

Hello Thryduulf, WP:EFH doesn't clarify when a editor of a failed request should be able to try again. — JudeccaXIII (talk) 23:17, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Hmm, point one of the process for requesting says "If a previous application for edit filter manager or edit filter helper was unsuccessful, the following people should be notified of the new discussion: ..." which implies that it's not a one time thing, but you are right it doesn't specify a minimum time between applications. If nothing has changed or participants in the discussion feel that it's been too soon since the last one then they will likely oppose again - and making it clear what would need to change before they would support (whether that is time or actions or whatever) is perfectly acceptable. Anyone repeatedly reapplying to the point of disruption should be censured as per any other disruption. If participants in a reapplication are supporting then obviously something has changed and they are now considered suitable - I don't see why this would be a problem. I can't, off the top of my head, think of a reason why any change to the policy or process would be needed for this, but feel free to start a discussion if you haven't already (WP:EFN is probably the best venue, or put a note there about a discussion at WT:EFH). Thryduulf (talk) 00:40, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
Thryduulf Yeah, I'll probably take this to WP:EFN sometime in the near future. I'll go in-depth the reasons why a minimum time for failed applicants should wait before requesting EFH again. Thanks & Cheers! — JudeccaXIII (talk) 01:20, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

"Front-engine design"

Hello! I just want to let you know that I am considering reinstating the deleted page "Front-engine design" as many articles about cars still contain red links to that page. I have seen other editors fix the links. I do not know if it's a good idea because it may be deleted, but it can probably be a disambiguation page containing the types of drive trains. Thank you for any comments. Patriots50217 (talk) 23:03, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

I deleted the redirect because the RfD at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2017 October 9#Front-engine design received no objections. user:Flow234's nominated it because it was misleading (the target Front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout is not the only layout to have an engine at the front). If you recreate it as a redirect to the same target then it will likely be speedily deleted per WP:CSD#G4 as a recreation. If you create the page as something that isn't a redirect, or as a redirect to a different target then it will not be speedily deleted for this reason - however do make sure that your creation doesn't have the same problem, if it does then it will be nominated for deletion again. Please consider re-running for ArbCom

You have been an excellent Arb, and the community needs more, and experienced, and neutral, candidates to choose from. Please consider re-running. Softlavender (talk) 08:56, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Thank you for the complement. I haven't ruled out running again in the future, but at the moment I can't guarantee whether I will have the time required throughout the term (and I probably haven't been active enough on en.wp recently), so I am not in a position to stand this year. ANI Experiences survey

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

Technical news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.
