Lux Leaks suggested for "in the news"

Talk?

[edit]

I am curious why, as an admin, it behooves you to edit war on an article at AdF and not to participate in the discussion at the Luxembourg Leaks talk page. I am also curious why you have been recruited above and find it proper to act as you have. μηδείς (talk) 01:45, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Recruited? I have not participated in the ITN discussion to which you say I was recruited above. Thue (talk) 02:05, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DDR5 SDRAM

[edit]

You deleted DDR5 SDRAM. Modules exist. I am currently studying them to get a better understanding of wavelet transform. Just FYI. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.197.6.134 (talk) 18:39, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever does a general-purpose SDRAM standard have to do with wavelet transforms? Ate you sure you are not thinking about GDDR5, which is indeed something you would use for wevelet transforms on a GPU? Thue (talk) 01:06, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Windows Media Video (video compression format)

[edit]

Hey, Thue. I noticed that recently, you copied part of Windows Media Video article and created Windows Media Video (video compression format), creating a misleading article fork that gives the impression that there is also something called "Windows Media Video" file format separate from Advanced Systems Format format. Unfortunately, not only I do not see a source for this assertion, Windows Media Video's body and Advanced Systems Format article also contends that no such thing exists.

Therefore, I performed what I hope is a BRD revert. (I believe the magnitude of the problem warranted this act.) But I am more than ready to discuss this issue and see your sources in the article talk page. Fleet Command (talk) 08:33, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hjælperen - Slaget på Reden

[edit]

Hej Thue,

Hi Thue, I reverted your addition of the link to the SC2 Wikia wiki on the article on LotV. Generally, external links to open wikis are discouraged by our external links policy (under #12). I understand your sentiment, and the SC2 wiki tends to be fairly stable, but precedent has it that it's an external link we don't use. Theories

[edit]

Theories of this kind are even less acceptable on Wikipedia than rumors: we don't report speculation, particularly if they haven't been picked up in multiple sources. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a place to make guesses and post them in case they're true . You're experienced enough to know that this sort of thing should never be reported in Wikipedia's voice in any case. Please self-revert, or at least please use the talkpage to discuss this. Acroterion (talk) 13:39, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Acroterion: I am experienced enough that theories do have their place here. You are talking complete nonsense, and I strongly question your competence. Are you going to delete the our article about the Theory of Gravity next? Thue (talk) 19:13, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edit war warning

[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Heroin. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Jytdog (talk) 14:03, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Replaceable fair use File:2015 Russian Sukhoi Su-24 shootdown Turkey claim.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:2015 Russian Sukhoi Su-24 shootdown Turkey claim.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 17:09, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:The duel.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Bandits (video game) moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Bandits (video game), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. I didn't see any reviews listed in MobyGames so I'm not sure what secondary sources you're using to mainspace this article. czar 18:39, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Damco

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Damco, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Thue. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Thue.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you are the original author of NIST SP 800-90A. Could you please review the edits I have done? I got interested in security proofs of the four DRBGs in this standard, and I found security proofs of Hash_DRBG and HMAC_DRBG and a paper proving that there is an error in the assumptions that were used to design CTR_DRBG that causes its security level to be limited by the underlying block cipher's block size which the designers failed to consider. Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Bandits (video game), a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Crystal Hammer, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

Your draft article, Draft:Bandits (video game)

[edit]

Hello, Thue. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Bandits".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. HasteurBot (talk) 00:01, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Internet Video Coding, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page AVC (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Skyward Flight moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Skyward Flight, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. John B123 (talk) 17:51, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@John B123: Which fact exactly in that article do you think needs a citation? Note that not every single word in an article needs a citation. Thue (talk) 21:40, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please see Wikipedia:Verifiability, and in particular All material in Wikipedia mainspace, including everything in articles, lists, and captions, must be verifiable. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 23:15, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@John B123: Again, not every single word of an article needs to be referenced to call an article verifiable. You have not answered my question of which fact in that article you think needs a reference. Thue (talk) 19:40, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The whole article is unreferenced therefore unverified. --John B123 (talk) 19:55, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@John B123: It is meaningless to say that "The whole article is unreferenced therefore unverified". For example Wikipedia:Verifiability says "All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports" - but you or anybody else have not challenged any material in the article. Hence the article does not fail Wikipedia:Verifiability. Please point out something you some fact think should be referenced, or stop claiming the article is unverified. Thue (talk) 01:42, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am challenging the whole article. I cannot believe an Admin of WP thinks a totally unreferenced article is acceptable. --John B123 (talk) 07:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dan Shumow courtesy notice

[edit]

Hello Thue, back in 2013 you created this "quick article", I presume in anticipation more coverage of Shumow would emerge because of Snowden's revelations. Eleven years on, it doesn't look like this has happened. I intend to redirect Shumov's article to Dual_EC_DRBG where his work is discussed. Is that okay with you? – Teratix 15:25, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Teratix: I agree that he is marginally notable. But I don't see how it would make Wikipedia better to delete the current small page? Just leave it as it is, it is better than nothing. Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopedia, we won't run out of paper. People reading about Dual_EC_DRBG here or elsewhere will be curious who he is, will look him up, and will be best served with the current page instead of a redirect. Thue (talk) 18:38, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But surely readers are better served by redirection to a larger article that places Shumov's role in context compared to a poorly referenced stub? If you would really prefer to cover Shumov in an independent article, it will need some better citations. – Teratix 07:08, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Teratix: If people have specifically ended up on the Shumow page, then it is because they specifically want to know about who Shumov is. Redirecting readers to some other article not about Shumov, and which is not written with the goal of saying who Shumov is so readers have to hope they can dig out details about who Shumov is, is obviously not the optimal solution. And the link to Dual_EC_DRBG will be right there in Shumov's article, trivial to click, if people want to know the context about that. Even a small stub is far better for readers than the redirect you are proposing. Thue (talk) 19:46, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Look, I basically expected one of two responses to this notice: (1) "Yeah sure, I thought he'd get more coverage but that hasn't happened, go ahead and redirect." (2) "No, he's actually a pretty notable figure, the article just needs to be expanded, here's a few links."
I didn't really expect an administrator to double down and argue the article in its current state is perfectly acceptable. It exclusively relies on primary sources associated with Shumov himself. – Teratix 14:06, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Administrative permissions and inactivity reminder

[edit]

Information iconThis is a reminder that established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. You are receiving this annual reminder since you have averaged less than 50 edits per year over the last 5 years.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to reengage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to be engaged with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
