남산 and 南山

Are these common ways of writing the same thing in Korean? 南山 is a disambiguation page on English WP and includes several entries for Namshan. The linked article on the Korean WP is [1], which to my ignorant eyes appears to be a different set of characters, however 南山 does appear in parentheses several times in the article, thus my question. The reason I'm asking is that 南山 has been nominated for deletion, and I'm wondering if it's reasonable to include the Namshan entries on the page.--Wikimedes (talk) 19:02, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Removal of Korean-language names

South Jeolla website

Anyone else having trouble accessing http://www.jeonnam.go.kr/? I have refreshed staistical data of the provinces from the official provincial websites but this one has not been accessible for months now. Can you help expand Yunggimun into a DYK?

I started Yunggimun, as I found a passing claim in a book I am reading - that it is "the oldest style of Korean pottery" - interesting. starting a Teaching with Wikipedia program in Korea

I've come to Korea in February and I work as a professor of sociology at Hanyang University. In US I've been doing a lot of teaching with Wikipedia (Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/User:Piotrus), and I'd like to do so here as well. After my first Spring semester I have however came to the conclusion that while my lectures are in English, my students English skills are not good enough for them to focus on contributing solely to English Wikipedia; therefore I'd like to have them contribute at least partially to Korean Wikipedia. As I cannot speak Korean I would need assistance from some Korean speakers who would like to become Campus Ambassadors (https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Campus_Ambassador). I wonder if there are any Korean Wikipedians who would like to assist me with this?

I can train people to become Campus Ambassadors (it's not difficult, I just need to spend one few hour session with you showing you some case studies and tools), and then we would practice in my courses this Fall. Ambassador duties would be primarily related to interacting with students (in Korean Wikipedia in Korean), making sure they are doing constructive and on topic edits, and they have somebody to ask for help. Coming to class twice or so during the course term to meet with students in person, answer their questions, and such, is helpful, too. This is not a very demanding activity, I'd estimate that it shouldn't take more than 10 or so hours of your time for the entire semester, 20 at max (that counts the initial training, travel time for physical meetings, and time spent online interacting with students). Starting Spring, hopefully, we may be able to recruit other professors; I plan on holding a workshop about this for interested faculty, but I cannot do so until after I have at least some confirmed Korean-speaking ambassadors to help me.

For Wikipedia, this means more active editors and more articles. In US, my students were able to produce about ~20 Good Articles on English Wikipedia and few dozen other nice articles over the ~4 or so years I was teaching there.

For those of you who become CAs, in addition to helping Wikipedia, this is also something to add on your CV (good for teaching careers, good for those planning on studying abroad as it helps to show innovative extra curricular activities), and WMF may send you swag like shirts, stickers, bags and similar goodies. So, particularly for those of you who are currently at the university, think of it as a good career move. This is not only for students (although majority of CA begin as students). If you are an academic instructor (professor), this is good for our careers, too (I am speaking from personal experience here, too). If you are a teacher and would like to get on board of this, I'd be happy to help you out, too.

Let me know if you are interested in this, ideally I would like to meet with interested volunteers in August. I will have two classes each with ~30 or so students contributing to Wikipedias (English and Korean) beginning in September and I really hope to get some assistance from Korean Wikipedians for that. --_{Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here} 02:56, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Luckily, I'm exactly 12 hours away, so the times work out conveniently on my end, as long as no one attempts to do anything in the afternoon. I would encourage anyone who is interested to apply, as this has the potential for a very successful program, as long as people are aware of the norms of both projects (i.e. naming conventions on the Sea of Japan, etc.). Simple is no solution, I am afraid. The problem is that the content produced by the students looks for the most part like the output of a machine translation: full or errors of all kind. Instead of writing simple English sentences (which are perfectly fine on regular Wikipedia, too), they try to produce complex English ones (and yes, I've tried asking them to keep it simple, which did not appear to affect the problem at all). If anybody is interested in the quality of content produced, please see here. The potential is there, but without a Korean speaker to help me, I am not going to be able to harness it properly, I am afraid. PS. Can anyone repost my request at Korean Wikipedia? I don't think that's anything a copy editing group couldn't fix, as my experience with Koreans who are learning English is that they are very grateful when you help them out. I'm wondering Piotr if you could find anyone who also has a near-native level of English skill and see if they could help you, because it might lessen some of the burden that you might face. Ok, that's fine. While you may want to read about Wikipedia:Ambassadors, what I'd need help with is monitoring student activities on Korean Wikipedia. I have two courses, to which I'd invite you to add yourself (as an Online Ambassador): Education Program:Hanyang University/Sociology of Globalization (Fall 2013) and Education Program:Hanyang University/ English Readings in Information Sociology: Understanding Wikipedia (Fall 2013)

In the globalization one, the students will be tasked with translating an article (one article for one student) from English to Korean Wikipedia. All that will be needed is that by mid November when they are posting them to Korean Wikipedia those articles are given a brief look over - to make sure they are properly translated (i.e. the students didn't simply paste the English text into Google translate and are trying to pass the resulting half-gibberish as their work). They may also have trouble formatting the articles, so they may benefit from some advice on that.

For the wiki course, majority of the work will be done on English Wikipedia, so I'll supervise it myself. The students however will be required to make 5 edits to Korean Wikipedia each week, so their edits, particularly in the beginning, may also require an occasional supervision, to make sure they are not getting themselves into trouble.

Jung Myung Seok, again — translations for Korean quotations and headlines

I'd like to ask anyone here who speaks Korean (I mean anyone — not just uninvolved admins) to look at the Jung Myung Seok article and help supply decent English translations of the Korean-language quotations and headlines in the cited news stories in the footnote references. Several of the source cites (I count five right now) are accompanied by one-sentence excerpts in Korean; per WP:NONENG, we are supposed to include English translations of these quotations alongside the original Korean text. Also, the headlines (titles) of several of the Korean news stories are currently accompanied by English translations of dubious quality (my favourite is "JMS (Jeong Myeong Seok) seeds, rape 60 million won alimony confirmed followers") — we need to clean these up. The idea here is that non-English sources are supposed to include enough English translation to allow readers and editors to verify that the sources are really substantiating the statements in the article body to which they are attached. Well, by definition (wp:OWN), no one person nor indeed body of people are ever in charge of a WP article or project. Barring a handful of paid WP employees, all editors are volunteers. All editors' free time comes in fits and starts, so you are as much free as A.N.Other to do things and suggest things on any project, and will be welcomed for your time and effort.

As for who's working on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Korea ... well, of course one can see whoever's recently updated the main page [like this].

This article is too biased and negative toward korean prosecution service in general. It seems that the author described Korean prosecution service from too controversial cases. Actually the right wing(half of the population supports some prosecution cases while the left wing blames them. The author wrote and understand all the mentioned cases from radical or leftist views.

Heads up! Tons of South Korean government agencies and ministries are moving to Sejong City. It means having to update links to ministries from Seoul districts and Gyeonggi Province municipalities to state that those ministries and agencies are gone. Hello! I have been trying to write an article on the History of education in South Korea on my sandbox when I realized that most of the history is similar with South Korea and North Korea. Should the article be then titled History of education in Korea? or should the articles be split after 1945. Any advice on the article title and/or the article will be helpful. Thanks! Mass update on South Korean address required

Since January 1, 2014, South Korean now uses Street-based address system, called Saejuso(Korean: 새주소). All address based on old system should be updated to new one. --Revi_talk 13:04, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Workgroup for address change

Hello. As you're probably aware due to the previous thread, the Korean address system went through a complete re-wire. The most prominent change is that dong (동), a classification by area, is replaced by street. This was made mandatory starting on January 1, 2014, and although the previous addressed can be still used for letters and whatnot, all official descriptions of places (including those on the Internet) must be changed to the new format. As far as I know, there's no way to automate this process; users will have to search the addresses for the places, translate them to Korean, change the format using Internet tools like this, and translate them back to English.

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Hey guys. I am teaching a course about Wikipedia at Hanyang University campus in Ansan, ~1h from Seoul. I'd like to work with a Korean-speaking (and English-speaking) Wikipedian, who could help me with tasks such as assessing student's (n=<30) work on Korean Wikipedia, and moderating some Korean-language discussions. Overall, the workload should be pretty low. In exchange, I can reimburse travel / lunch costs, help the said volunteer become a certified Wikipedia Ambassador (first one in Korea besides myself), provide other documents that the assistance took place (all nice fluff pieces for one's CV/resume), and future references. Korean Mythology Page

Korean mythology page is a mess. I cleaned up some of it, but I need more references also a list of gods from various religious traditions, etc. I have some references, but I'm missing a massive amount of information. Here is what I would like:

A list of Gods, preferably by region and religion with references to back it up. (More recent, the better.)

A history of mythology in Korean divided by history periods (Three Kingdoms, Goryeo, etc.) Also if I could get how it relates to the religions of Korea, that would be really good.

Prevailing themes that are more likely to appear in Korean mythology, especially by time period.

Anything about myth types, etc from an academic stand point.

That would really help to clean up the article. I have Myth and Legends from Korea, Korean Shamanism, and the Samguk Yusa, but I need more sources, especially for anything contemporary legends/myths and Joseon sources of myth. History of Korean TV Dramas

Hello. I wrote a "History" section for Korean drama. At that time, I also invited corrections or changes at the Korean Popular Culture working group's talk page. Later I edited Secret Garden (TV series) only for the edit to be canceled because my sources were considered unreliable. (Much more about this here.) I now know that most of my sources for the "History" section would also be considered unreliable. Since I don't know Korean, I can't fix this. It has been suggested that there might be someone here who could find reliable sources.

Please note that although ko:대한민국의 텔레비전 드라마 is nearly all history, it is not a substitute as is, because it cites no sources at all; I don't know whether that's a priority in Korean Wikipedia, but if it is, it should probably be fixed too.

Anyway, frankly, anyone intelligent who reads Korean could undoubtedly write such a section better than I. If anyone who knows both languages wants to merge the two sections, I assume the Korean one will dominate.

What's the difference between Jangdokdae and Jangdok?

WP Korea Analysis #1

First, thanks to all those who have continuously contributed to WP Korea. Even if you don't post anything in the talk, your contribution deserve praises. Second, I will try to be more active and boost our progression.

After looking at the chart in scope and goal, our unassessed articles is at 1600+ and stubs at 8000+. Also, I feel our working groups need some changes/organizing while seeking out contributors to overlook it. I noticed somebody added Hip hop (even though it wasn't made) to the working group but I feel we need a music working to manage all genres (since K-pop is inside popular culture working group).

The artwork would only be WP:FAIRUSE if the artwork itself is being discussed and the absence of the artwork image significantly impacts the understanding. As the images are on the Commons and as of yet they have not been nominated for deletion over copyright concerns, WP:FAIRUSE is irrelevant. @Yunshui:: It passes my quick test for references (inline refs were required, properly formatted and seemingly reliable). Please deal with the interwiki problem: "The page you wanted to link with is already attached to an item on the central data repository which links to Tug of war on this site. Items can only have one page per site attached. Please choose a different page to link with." A list of Korean language further reading would be nice, and I'd expect to see some external links to Korean websites/online articles. The article has room for at least one more photo, and I see we have some at Commons. Nothing to Envy article ratings

Hi, I just joined the group. I recently took the course WIKISOO and worked on the article for the book Nothing to Envy. My guess is that the article is B/High for quality/importance, or C/Mid so I just set it for now. I recognize @User:Piotrus from the class, however I remember being told it's probably best to have someone else take a look that wasn't a member of the class. @DavidBoudreau: I wasn't really a member of the class; more like an observer. I'd go with C class; for my interpretation of B-class the article should have inline references for all content, which this article does not have. O Sang-hon

I don't know Korean, but based on guesswork and trying to work transliteration backwards, am I right in thinking the Hangul for his name would be 오상헌? If so, could someone please update the O Sang-hon article to reflect this? He was only a relatively minor official, but he's clearly notable after the worldwide reports of the nature of his death, and there's clearly a much larger story to be told about his involvement in clearly quite major internal political upheaval in which he played a part. -- The Anome (talk) 10:53, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Naming conventions

Should articles concerning Koreans be titled with a dash or without? There are instances of both. I don't think that the differences are adequate to refer to a WP:COMMONNAME, but shouldn't there be a standardized style for the names? KJ^{«Click Here»} 13:33, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Well, we already have a standard, but it doesn't override WP:COMMONNAME: WP:NC-KO. It says that if there is no established English spelling, then for South Koreans and pre-1945 Korean names we should use Revised Romanization of Korean with a hyphen (not a space) between the two syllables of the given name, and the first letter of the second syllable in lower case. For North Koreans, most articles use McCune Reischauer (with some big exceptions like Jang Sung-taek), but the spacing/hyphenation is much more mixed-up: some articles use spaces (apparently following the KCNA house style), while others use hyphens.

A lot of South Korea athlete articles used to be hyphenated with the first letter of the second syllable of the given name capitalised, but now many of those are being moved to lower case like other South Korean articles. quant18 (talk) 14:28, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
