Happy Holidays

[edit]
Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, people's rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. ―Buster7

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Barnstar of Diligence
I award this barnstar to the stupendously committed "Victuallers, the Goal Setter" who wrote on the WiR talkpage on 20 Dec 2023: "So today's the day. This time last year I thought I wonder if I could write a new women's biog every day for a year. I'd tried before and messed it up at #360. So I started in December last year so I could officially start a full year this January. Well its complete and Wikipedia even records the names and dates here. During the year, I completed my 8 year run of notable ODNB women and ran out of missing ODNB Women in Red. I had to turn to Aussie women on the ADB. All of the 365 articles have fed into one of the WIR editathons." For this, you inspire me and countless others. So with appreciation and thanks, this barnstar is for you. Rosiestep (talk) 20:09, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Rosie, I will warm my tootsies on your kind greeting. Ive been thrilled to see WIR Tee shirts in Ghana - not sure whos idea but I'm feeling quite smug. Victuallers (talk) 23:03, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A difficult situation

[edit]

Hello, Victuallers. Would you please see the discussion at Talk:Wiltshire County Council, in particular my last post there, and give us some thoughts from the point of view of an Admin? Kind regards, Moonraker (talk)

I had a look. I can see that it appears to have got into a tricky place but everyone seems to have an entrenched position. I don't think anyone intended to create this but now its there. Is it impossible to create a compromise? I'm not sure that discussing what would be ideal will help as surely it may be necessary to target a new position which is not optimal. Victuallers (talk) 23:05, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the thanks

[edit]

I'm guessing you stumbled across that article somehow? I was working through the list of Cat A buildings in Moray, trying to tick off any that didn't have articles (a job I've yet to finish, but I made some headway), and I came across her while researching Aberlour House. I was intrigued, and started digging, and just kept getting more intrigued. I still can't believe her story isn't more widely known. Girth Summit (blether) 16:00, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Its something I do all the time to keep down the unreferenced women. I saw an advert for the drive and thought I may as well add the tag - (why would I wait?). I think Ive done abt 60.. I'm not too fussed about points - but keen to inspire others to rid us of unreferenced articles. Oh and thank for all your corrections and enhancements to "my?" articles. Victuallers (talk) 11:05, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure the tag will help advertise it and get others involved. I'm happy to help - I'm very much a WP:GNOME at times. :-) -Kj cheetham (talk) 18:44, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Victuallers,

Thank you for creating Ia Ninidze.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

A number of articles that would help augment this article are available in Russian.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|CurryTime7-24}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

@CurryTime7-24: I am sure there are lots of articles that could be referenced. ... and could be included .... it could be made a featured article - feel free. The point is, is it adequately referenced now? Victuallers (talk) 23:44, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are four refs on the ru:wiki. 1 is an interview, 2 is a 404 error, 3 is one that is already cited and the fourth is not in readable text. There are about 6 million articles on the en:wiki that could be improved. I don't understand the purpose or adding a tag that calls this one for special attention. Can you explain please? Elizabeth Anne Lewis

Hi! Hope you are well. I created an article today on Elizabeth Anne Lewis, British temperance activist. She has an ODNB entry, which I can't access but I linked to it in the ELS. The article is fine without it -- just figured I'd let you know it exists. Rosiestep (talk) 04:13, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Rosie, Happy Easter, you're right the ODNB doesnt add much but there was an interesting libel case that she won that I've added. Victuallers (talk) 11:42, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Victuallers. I am extremely pleased to learn of your continuing interest in the subject of the article. John Desmond (talk) 16:09, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should be a top priority maybe. It was this facility that led to the UK being tradegarised. I'm not sure of the accurate figure but isnt about 5-10% of the UK employees are now working for the expanded version (now called the NHS) and another 1% are on the waiting list to use it:) My partner is in Tredegar tonight so that what made me notice it. :) Victuallers (talk) 22:21, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol

[edit]

Hi and hello from Los Angeles! I was surprised to come across an article you wrote in the in the new pages feed. Shouldn't you automatically have autopatrol? Forgive me if I'm missing something -- just leaving a message in case it's some kind of glitch that you are not aware of. (I know, grammar, it's early-ish here.)

Hope you are well! Julie JSFarman (talk) 17:28, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well I agree, but after a bit of stalking/following/TBA there was a debate and it was decided that I needed to allow the community to oversee my new articles. The stalking/following/TBA was fixed and I was left with this minor issue. I'm OK (it doesn't waste my time) and its OK to have corrections and additions. Thanks for your interest Julie. First image

[edit]

Dear Victuallers, Hello! I am trying to learn how to add images to a page. I have done my first one at Chiqui Vicioso . A long time ago in Edinburgh you said you might help/check my first one or two. If you have time, that would be great! I am concerned that I haven't cited any photographer and wouldn't know how to. Balance person (talk) 10:44, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That looks fine BP. If you find the image on commons then in 99.9% of cases the image will have an adequate license and the photographer if known will be cited. The photographer in this case is acknowdedged - if a reader clicks on the image and that is usually how it works. We don't normally explicitly mention the photographer in the image caption but you could if you wanted or if it was particularly relevant (e.g. photo taken by another notable person). Hope that helps. Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 11:03, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Roger (if I may), that is very helpful. Another query. If I take a photo myself of the front cover of the last issue of Women's Report, which contains cartooning by someone I am not in contact with ..not even sure who did it, I suppose that I cannot upload that to Commons....right? Unless I can find out who cartooned it and get their permission? Balance person (talk) 08:41, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thats correct, I find that getting permission from people for a single photo is not really worth it (if they have 1,000s then diff story). The explanation of what and why permission is required defies most people's patience. Usually quicker to take a new photo of yourself of the obkect or person if possible. .... However for Women's Report you could take a photo of the front of a magazine and then reduce the image size to 300x 300 and then I can tell you how to load that under a special copyright clause called "fair use". Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 14:22, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I have taken a photo of the front cover of the last issue of Women's Report and have cropped it and saved it on my pc. I logged in, went to the WR page, clicked edit, put cursor in sensible place, clicked Insert, selected the file with my photo in it, described the photo and gave it a name. It wants me to fill in the 'Category' box on this 'Media Settings' page. Am I in the right place? If so, what do I put in the box and how do I do the fair use thing? If I am in the wrong place, maybe I should start again?! Tech is not my strong point. Alternatively I could send you the photo!!! But it would be good to learn the right way. Balance person (talk) 12:23, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! well say sorry if anyone complains. Edit the picture and save it when it is less than 300 x 300 pixels in size. You need to load it here as "a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use".. You find this link in Wikipedia when you are looking at a Wikipedia article and on the left hand side it says "Upload file". Basically you are doing something that is "just" legal. "Choose Upload a non-free file" You are using an image that belongs to someone else, but the law allows this IF you explain that you are not going to use it at full res. You will be asked to find the file and then it will ask you various questions. Give honest answers and remember you are loading "a non-free file" and it is "official cover art of a work" and its "a low res version". With luck that might get you through it. or try this link Victuallers (talk) 15:03, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I hope I have done it right! Thanks for your detailed advice. I will now go and lie down in a darkened room. Balance person (talk) 16:17, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jennifer Uchendu

[edit]

Hi, Vittlers! I'm trying to understand what's going on at Jennifer Uchendu. It looks as if you made 10 edits to the article, and then, after it was speedily deleted by Deb under WP:G4/WP:G11, you undeleted one revision (complete with speedy-deletion template, and with the rationale "seems to have been deleted in error or at least with no rationale"). Were you not at that time already involved to the point that you should have taken no further admin action? Was the rationale given by Deb not clear to you? Did you contact her before (imperfectly) undoing her deletion? Perhaps I've misread the history entirely, of course. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:10, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think I did imperfectly try to undelete it. No I did not see the rationale I'll look for it. I may have been over enthusiastic Victuallers (talk) 21:16, 1 May 2024 (UTC) Still cannot see it, all I see is "draftify and clean up a bit" in the edit history. Nyttend seems to have fixed it. Victuallers (talk) 21:22, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're both correct in the sense that I moved the article to draft space, partly because of the dubious edit history. I never leave a redirect when I draftify, so I guess that's where the impression came from that I deleted it. Victuallers, I can see you've done a lot of work on Women in Red, so I assume you got the idea of creating the article from the red list. It came to my attention because of the report on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Dotun55, the user who had created Jennifer Olachi Uchendu, which was deleted in February by User:Rosguill. You may not have been aware of this. I can see why you feel she's notable, but I wondered why you moved the article out of draft without waiting for an independent review, though obviously your changes made a big improvement to it and I think it would have passed. Deb (talk) 07:38, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Deb, thanks for the explanation. My goal was to give a biography to her as a notable Nigerian and I was half way through it before I discovered there was a deleted version and a draft. My approach is always to create an article rather than working on drafts as they don't add so much to the project. WIR creates main space articles and trains others to also do that. It wasn't clear why it was there although it had some failings - its not the worst BLP article on wiki by a long way. This was not the deleted version but a new version. I could see that I could easily move it to be a start article and others would be able to improve the article in main space - which they have. IMO its eyes that improves articles. I could then get on with other work.... as it is I'm seeing a link to her deleted in another article - which seems odd but Ive restored it as it moves her towards being an orphan article. Anyway thx for your work. Victuallers (talk) 08:52, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Sharan Rani.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Sharan Rani.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:54, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

contacting admins listed as recently active

[edit]

Could I request a look at the interventions of User:Maurnxiao in Talk:2024 United Kingdom general election, sections Infobox, Muslim Vote, and Workers Party.

A member of less than a week (although his very first post was challenging the status of sources as reliable, making me suspect he has been active under a different identity), entirely unaccepting of the principle of consensus, determined to see a level of coverage of one political party that is disproportionate to that given by mainstream news sources. Highly disruptive, unwilling to accept that his preference is not grounds to change the approach taken by the article. Time sensitive issue (election is in 10 days), so a quicker intervention would be desirable. Is seeking a topic ban suitable, or is some other solution more suitable.

With thanks. Kevin McE (talk) 08:31, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously I feel an intense urge to defend myself after the way in which you have defaced my honor as an editor on here, but I should also really say that I had already acknowledged the lack of consensus and had stopped pushing for an inclusion of the Workers Party in the infobox with pictures should it be reintroduced. My question had been at what point does a regional party become significant enough in Westminster to be included. You had also promised to push for a "topic ban", whatever that is, if I should continue talking about Galloway in the talk page. I didn't make a single edit anywhere after that warning, and yet you chose to smear my name on so many different user talk pages? Maurnxiao (talk) 10:39, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had a quick read ... and it appears that @Maurnxiao: was making little effort to find a consensus. I note that (s)he is new here. My advice would be to avoid contentious subjects like forthcoming elections. Wikipedia usually manages to establish something of a consensus because those who feel really strongly about issues are not encouraged to join the debate. If you believe that you are putting forward a minority (but popular) view then you can be sure that others will add it without your advocacy. Victuallers (talk) 11:08, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't reached your record yet, but I wrote my 2,300th woman's biography today. Charlotte Thompson emigrated from England to the U.S. as a child and went on to become an accomplished actress. Hope you have a good week, my friend. -- Rosiestep (talk) 19:55, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh well done! I just completed 600 days of 1day1woman and decided it was time to stop. I'll wait until someone else has done 599. I'll still be writing but I'm committed to creating a pantomime (very British bit of culture -nothing to do with US meaning of mime) and that is going to take months. Just completed the script (my 10th) and next we have auditions and then rehearsals. 1% of all women's biogs is a great achievement for us two. I think I'm only a few hundred in front of you. I wish there was a tool to count how many women biogs you/I have started. Takes me ages to work out an estimate. All the best partner. Victuallers (talk) 22:16, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

George Edmund Street

[edit]

Hi, I’m struggling to see that your addition really has much relevance to Street. It introduces a mass of redlinks, and yet Street’s sister’s activities seem pretty tangential to Street and his career. Is it a link for the sake of a link? KJP1 (talk) 20:08, 16 August 2024 (UTC). That depends ...he designed a convent house where his sister and another of the redlinks lived. Not too tangential I think. If you feel that it is tangential to this article then by all means revert. This aspect of his life will be covered in the buildings he built and you can leave out his family, his buildings, his embroidery commisions and his important friendship with the Blencowe family. Are you sure your opinion was (really?) not a bit premature? (a mass of?) Red links may indicate missing stuff. Read the refs or wait a while? Victuallers (talk) 21:01, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, not quite understanding this. I’ll wait for a while, as you suggest. Regards. KJP1 (talk) 05:17, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I think I understand your intention. But we now have mentions of his sister and her activities in three sections; Early life, Career and Personal life. For me, that isn't a coherent approach. Whilst interesting, her activities are not so central to Street's life and work that they need mentioning three times. Can I suggest that we have one paragraph, covering all of this, ideally located in the Personal life section. Regards. KJP1 (talk) 21:12, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need my permission. Have a go at improving it -you dom't need to tell me its incoherent....and at the same time that you understand it:-) Victuallers (talk) 22:01, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m aware of that, but I was asking about your intentions as we’ve collaborated before and I respect your contributions. I shall make some amendments shortly. Regards. KJP1 (talk) 22:09, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My interest here was to uncover these women who were active in the arts and crafts and gothic revival and Oxford movement. She and her nuns were holding Street's designs as important but he seems to have just exploited them as free labour. I added them at three points to show that his sister and her mate were important to him throughout his career. I welcome the collaboration. thanks Victuallers (talk) 22:30, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Filippa Fotopoulou

[edit]

Hi, i want your help for a mistake which i made. I create the page for the Cypriot athlete Filippa Fotopoulou. Mistakenly i write her name Fillipa. Then, i make a mess. I create the redirected page Filippa Fotopoulou. I will be grateful if you delete the redirected page and then to rename the following page to Filippa Fotopoulou. Thank you for your time.

Filippa Fotopoulou

[edit]

During the European Championship in Rome, she used the surname Kviten. Her original surname is Fotopoulou. Thanbla (talk) 09:04, 1 September 2024 (UTC)... then surely her name is Kviten? Victuallers (talk) 09:05, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"mitant acts" ?

[edit]

Hi, I realize this edit was over 4 years ago, but I was wondering what you meant by the adjective "mitant" in your edit [1] to Clara Mordan, in the sentence: "Morden knew that she would die of tuberculosis and this meant that her mitant acts were performed by proxy." I can only find a definition for a French term "mitant", but it doesn't seem to fit here.

The reference text reads "Clara Mordan was suffering from tuberculosis and was unable to do anything that meant she was sent to prison." So, I'm wondering if by "mitant" you meant something like "final" or "dying", or possibly "hidden" or "latent"? Harris7 (talk) 12:34, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Four years ago, but Clara remains in my memory as a lost hero. Pleased you took an interest - "militant" was the word I meant to type, but I only have one finger who types and its not a very obedient one. Cheers Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 14:07, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Peebles

[edit]

Greetings for the first time in a while! Just thought I'd let you know that some pics you took some time ago of churches in Peebles were used to illustrate a lecture I attended last weekend. Correctly credited, I might add! One of mine was also used in a later lecture, coincidentally. Hope all is well. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 18:31, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DOY articles

[edit]

Just a quick note that Wikipedia:Days of the year articles require direct citations for all new entries. Please see WP:DOYCITE for more info. Cheers! Toddst1 (talk) 13:36, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - that should slow down new entries. Feel free to delete my addition if it offends, Victuallers (talk) 14:06, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Sister Leontine Belgian Roman Catholic nun.png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Sister Leontine Belgian Roman Catholic nun.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Josh Milburn (talk) 16:09, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Open letter to WMF now published and awaiting support

[edit]

Thank you, Victuallers, for your interest in this case. There now appears to be a significant risk that the identities of certain editors of the article on Asian News International will be revealed to the Dehli High Court. Given our concerns, an open letter to WMF has been published and is taking signatures. You can find more background on wp:Village pump (WMF). Anything you can do to publicize the importance of this development would be appreciated. We cannot allow Wikipedia editors to be treated as criminals. Perhaps Rosiestep with her many connections may also be able to assist.--Ipigott (talk) 16:49, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
