Recent additions to Lillie Bridge Depot

[edit]

Thanks for your recent additions to Lillie Bridge Depot. I have moved the 2018 info about Ashfield House to the redevelopment section, rather than leaving it in 1907, and have added fact templates to some of it, as the text was not supported by the existing references. I agree that Evangelical is a horrible translation of "evangelisch", but Evangelical Lutheran is worse, because in Germany, many are United. I prefer Protestant. However, the German church gave itself the misleading English name, - what can we do? If you have too much time study the many futile discussions on the article talk. Thank you for this. I think it's sorted. The problem arose because I had used slightly altered (not copypaste) material from another Wikipedia article, Polish Hunting Dog which turned out to have an extant copyright violation in its History section, not picked up since 2007! Obviously, I had no idea it was so. I explained this to who told me about "rollback" which had resulted in the reverting of all the many edits that followed. I have re-edited the "offending" section and reverted the revert. I have left it to User:Sphilbrick to deal with the old violation in the dog article. Margravate or Margraviate? Creeping neologism

[edit]

Question for administrator

[edit]

In relation to historic states in the Holy Roman Empire, there are a number of articles titled, e.g. Margravate of Meissen and then others titled, e,g. Margraviate of Brandenburg. The OED lists "Margravate" as the territory ruled by a Margrave. This is the historical and primary form in English of the German translation. If there is already an established word, Margravate, is it not confusing to introduce another expression, "Margraviate" for the same territorial definition by adding an "i", making it a secondary form? Moreover, in the case of Brandenburg, there is a map that refers to the "Margravate of Brandenburg", even though the article is called as above. The secondary form appears to stem from the adjective, "Margravial" and seems to be an unnecessary Neologism.

I would like to suggest that in the interests of uniformity and precision the original English form of "Margravate" be applied throughout on en.wikipedia. Where can we discuss this? Thank you. --Po Mieczu (talk) 00:57, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of Kresy born Poles moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, List of Kresy born Poles, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 07:35, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Po Mieczu, Greetings. Pls note that List article do need independent reliable sources just like any other articles - pls see Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists. Once you have provided the inline citations than submit the draft for review. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 07:37, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello CASSIOPEIA, thank you for pointing it out. I was hoping others would help in the task as I can ill afford the time on screen. Anyway, I have done it. Now I really must have lunch!. Regards, --Po Mieczu (talk) 15:20, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Po Mieczu, Saw your inline citations and they are good. I also notice the discussion between you and another reviewer on Talk:Kresy. "List of people from Kresy" would be a better fitted name. You could resubmit it and I could review and change the name for you if you like. Just ping me. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 02:52, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello CASSIOPEIA, thank you for your appraisal. Another editor has moved the piece into the mainspace. His view is that "List of people from Kresy" would not be correct in this context. However, there is a case for creating a category with that title. I do not know how to do that. The advantage of the category would be that, as long as it was confined to pre-1945, it could assemble members of all the diverse communities that inhabited the macro region. Kind regards, --Po Mieczu (talk) 10:33, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Drafts should not be forced on people, I think this is fine for the mainspace, much better sourced than most other lists I've seen. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:22, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Piotrus Greetings, When I move to draft it was no a source to be found and that was the reason for the moved - pls see [ https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Kresy-born_Poles&diff=prev&oldid=900374882&diffmode=source]. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 13:26, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@CASSIOPEIA: No biggie, but I don't think the policies actually support userfication like that? It's one thing with new editors, but when someone is more experienced... of course, it is probably preferable to some deletion process. As long as it is all fine now, then it's all good, eh? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:36, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Piotrus, Would not want to send it to AfD, the article just needed sources as most editors do not aware stand alone lists need sources to support the content claimed just like any articles - see WP:STAND. It is all good Piotrus and thank you for the message above. Cheers. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 13:47, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Po Mieczu

Thank you for creating Rosemary Gordon.

User:Blythwood, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

I've linked to a pre-existing page on her on the Spanish-language Wikipedia, and upgraded the Journal of Analytical Psychology obit by creating it from the DOI-this forms a weblink to the article. The article could do with inline citations at the end of every sentence–I've put in a name for the JAP reference to facilitate that. I've also moved the bibliography above the reflist, in case someone wants to add references into the bibliography section. As she appears to have been sometimes known as "Rosemary Gordon‐Montagnon" post-marriage, I've put that in the body text and as a redirect in case anyone's searching for it. Hope that all makes sense!

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Blythwood}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

Thank you for the review and finding the Spanish connection I did not know existed. Thanks also for the doi and movements. I have done the in line refs and added ISBNs. Season's greetings to you too. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 23:22, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a tag to J. W. T. Redfearn regarding tone: it reads a bit too laudatory and familiar, when it should be dispassionate and neutral ("proud Yorkshireman" and "profound struggle" are subjective). It reads like an article written by friends and colleagues of Redfearn: I suggest paring back reliance on obituaries, and extracting just the facts, not the chummy tone. Close paraphrasing of Thomson 2012 should also be scrutinized and avoided. (talk) 19:01, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello --Animalparty!. I've made it less "chummy". Would you like to see if in your opinion it passes muster? Thanks.--Po Mieczu (talk) 19:15, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've made it even less so. It can still use work, but I've removed the tag. Note also that subjects should generally be referred to only by surname after first mention, per MOS:SURNAME. Cheers, --Animalparty! (talk) 19:30, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

re: How many people read Polish?

[edit]

That of course is an invalid argument, but 1) per WP:LEAD, this content may belong in body, not in the lead per possible issues with WP:UNDUE and 2) from [2] "prekursorki feminizmu" - precursor of feminism is probably not exactly the same as a " proto-feminist". I suggest you restore it with the better (direct) translation in the article's body, not lead. Also, the best place to discuss this is article's talk, where you can ping me. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:00, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

re: Ready for DYK nomination?

[edit]

Bad news is that Józef Retinger does not meet WP:DYK criteria for being either created within last week or so, or being expanded 5-fold in that period (I count ~3x). Good news is that it is eligible for WP:GAN, which if successful, also allows an article to be DYKed :) So I recommend a WP:GAN. Mind you, reviews are backlogged due to lack of volunteers doing them, so you can wait between few days to half a year for someone willing to review your work... --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:49, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

[edit]

Thank you for your recent articles, including St Andrew Bobola Church, Hammersmith, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:38, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus. Thank you for the assessment guidance. I try to do it when I start an article, but as I don't have a handle on the arborescence, it's a bit hit and miss. So for example I have just done a major re-edit on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_in_England_and_Wales#Polish_Catholic_immigration, but I would not know how to alert the WikiProject about a section in a broader article. Anyway, let me know what you think. My next few challenges are Józef Gawlina, whom I rather abandoned and Polish Catholic Mission both of which require expansion and improvement. Thank you as ever.--Po Mieczu (talk) 14:24, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edward Weld

[edit]

I hope it is clear that instead of creating "Edward Weld (of Lulworth)" you should have gone to the entry for "Edward Weld", which was redirecting to the middle of "Maria Fitzherbert", and replaced the redirect code with the your biography of Edward Weld. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 12:53, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well exactly, Bmclaughlin9, if you know how. It was also redirecting to the terrible Weld-Blundell Family page and to Thomas Weld (Cardinal) and it was doing my head in. Anyway, all's well that ends well as Anthony Appleyard kindly put it right.--Po Mieczu (talk) 19:48, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Weld family

[edit]

The Weld family article before you edited it had several people named Weld with no clear connection to the Boston Welds. Rather than try to rationalize the article by putting them in chronological order, I think it makes much more sense to remove them entirely. If there is some demonstrable and reasonably close relationship, that can be mentioned without incorporating multiple paragraphs of text about them. --Macrakis (talk) 23:05, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Macrakis (talk), I tend to agree with you. Apart from the huge glitch dealt by site maintenance, the article was already higgledy piggledy, with a tinge of self-promotion from the English Weld side. The original Welds, as I put in the lead, are an English family going back to the Duke of Mercia (12th c.) and the American Welds are obviously descended from them, but we don't know precisely how, as one editor put it, unless a 16th c. genealogy comes to light. What we know is that the Boston Welds were probably Protestant and the English Welds, mainly Catholic. The Irish Welds came back from America and then on back to England, but they are still Protestants. Essentially, there are two sets of Welds. So maybe call the American Welds (American) and the English Welds (English). What do you think?--Po Mieczu (talk) 00:34, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps of interest

[edit]

I just stumbled upon a useful book that can be used to add information on places notable Poles are buried in UK: [3]. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Edward Weld (Senior) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. DGG ( talk ) 10:53, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DGG, I cannot find the speedy deletion tag to which you refer. Can you please guide me to it? In any event, I have added material to the article with citations. The subject of the article, albeit perhaps less notable than some of his ancestors and descendants, was involved in two unusual legal interventions in Georgian England and is a member of a highly notable family. While I understand your urge to keep Wikipedia free of dross, this action comes across as precipitate. For your information, I have created upwards of 100 articles and improved many more in several languages, but I generally take heed of helpful advice.--Po Mieczu (talk) 19:53, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
the tag was removed by another editor--it's now at AfD. As usual, when people here disagree about an article, the right thing is to let the community decide. DGG ( talk ) 04:32, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Edward Weld (Senior) for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Edward Weld (Senior) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Edward Weld (Senior) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. DGG ( talk ) 20:52, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ludicrous?

[edit]

Can I suggest thst you discuss "ludicrous" claims on the talk page? Stonyhurst College now reads that is was started at the date you prefer by a person who died a 100 or so years before. That seems ludicrous too. Victuallers (talk) 12:26, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
