Wikipedia:Files for deletion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  (Redirected from Wikipedia:Ffd)
Jump to: navigation, search

Files for deletion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions.

Examples of what you may request here

  • Obsolete – The file has been replaced by a better version.
  • Orphan – The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
  • Unencyclopedic – The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
  • Low quality – The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
  • Copyright violation – The file might be used in violation of copyright.
  • NFCC violation – The file is used under a claim of fair use but does not meet the requirements.

What not to list here[edit]

  1. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use one of the speedy deletion templates. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.
  2. Files that have no source, have an unknown copyright, are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:
    1. {{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated
    2. {{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information
    3. {{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but isn't used in any articles
    4. {{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but could be replaced by a free file
    5. {{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed
    6. {{subst:frn}} if a file has no non-free use rationale
If the source or licensing information of an image marked as being freely licensed is disputed, please list the file on Possibly unfree files.
  3. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use
    1. {{isd|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
    2. {{now commons|File:NEW FILENAME}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{now commons}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)
  4. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}}
  5. Suspected copyright violations shouldn't be listed here.
    1. If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license, but lacks verification of this (either by an OTRS ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
    2. For other suspected copyright infringements or licensing issues, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files.
  6. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.
  7. Description pages with no local file, even though they are in the file namespace, should not be listed here.
    1. Redirects should be treated as in any other namespace: if no speedy deletion criteria apply, they should be listed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.
    2. Local description pages for files hosted on Commons are usually speedy-deletable under criterion F2; use {{db-nofile}}.
    3. Local description pages with no associated file are speedy-deletable under criterion G8; use {{db-imagepage}}.
    4. Any other deletion of a description page with no local file should be listed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion.
  8. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 8 for files.
  9. If you are the uploader of the image, tag it with {{db-author}}.

Instructions for listing files for deletion

To list a file:

1
Edit the file page.

Add {{ffd|log=2015 March 29}} to the file page.

2
Create its FfD subsection.

Follow this edit link and list the file using {{subst:ffd2|File_name.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} ~~~~

Leave the subject heading blank.

If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons.

For listing additional files with the same reason, edit the first file section and use {{subst:ffd2a|File_name.ext|Uploader= }}

3
Give due notice.

Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:fdw|File_name.ext}}

  • Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media
  • For multiple images by the same user, use {{subst:fdw-multi|First_file.ext|Second_file.ext|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~ (can handle up to 26)

If the image is in use, also consider adding {{ifdc|File_name.ext|log=2015 March 29}} to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. Consider also notifying relevant WikiProjects of the discussion.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted. Some common reasons are:

  • Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new file name (often abbreviated OB)
  • Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the file is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed files to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
  • Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia (or for any Wikimedia project). Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
  • Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
  • Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)

These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

Instructions for discussion participation[edit]

In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:

Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.

Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons''', you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

Instructions for closing discussions[edit]

Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps here.

This article fails WP:NFCC#3a. The article mentions three types of art ('sculpture/public art', 'temporary-related sculptures' and 'performance-related artworks') and it should be enough to have one example of each type of art. There is also a problem with WP:FREER: we'd want a licence from the photographer (maybe not possible for artworks of the type 'performance-related artworks' as the artworks only seem to exist for a short period of time). --Stefan2 (talk) 15:40, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Example of an artist's work being used under a claim of fair use. The artist has released a different image - File:Digital Montage Number 2 by Nick Gentry.jpg - under an acceptable license, as well as File:Still by Nick Gentry.jpg, which we're not even using in the article. (I have checked the OTRS ticket - the image I am nominating is NOT mentioned in the ticket and the licenses for the other two images are good.) I'm unclear why we need to use this image under a claim of fair use when we have two other good and freely licensed examples of his work. B (talk) 01:13, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

This image is an example of Dimitar Lukanov's work. We have a boatload of (better) photos that the artist himself has donated under acceptable licenses. I don't see a reason that we also need to use this one under a claim of fair use. B (talk) 01:19, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

File:'Gloria Steinem (with Dorothy Pitman Hughes)' photographer Dan Wynn.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by VeronicaRoss (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Photo of Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes used in article about the latter (who is living). The stated purpose is to illustrate "Dorothy Pitman Hughes prominence in the feminist movement and alliance with Gloria Steinem". That can be done with text - you don't need to prove it with a picture. The photo is in the National Portrait Gallery and there is a paragraph about it, which seems completely out of place in a biographical article and seems to serve no purpose other than to justify the photo's inclusion under our fair use policy. Scan of a newspaper article used in two biographical articles about people whose actions are discussed in the article. I'm unclear how having a picture of the article better helps understand either topic. (WP:NFCC#8) B (talk) 01:53, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

I believe this image contributes significantly to an understanding of both topics. First, it is useful because the subject sculpture is represented, and often, visual references can communicate more effectively than words, especially to show the range in size and subject matter. Second, because the artist is represented with his work, and being dead, that can not ever occur again. Third, direct quotes exist in the article. Fourth, this publication frequently deletes files of previous articles, leaving no other access to the article other than such a graphic. Fifth, it demonstrates the importance locally of the subject and the artist, to be given a full page spread with many photographs. Sixth, the editor, who prepared the image and added it to the articles, carefully chose images to accompany the articles to make both an appealing article for our readers. Seventh, it is one of few images that can tie the subjects of the two articles to one another. This image has stood the test of time in articles that see regular traffic from readers. Fulfilling the guidelines for images, and not being in violation of any fair use criteria, it should be retained. Deletion should not hinge on the taste of one editor when no other issue exists (for it merely is a difference between two editors, not regulations). I fail to find how that difference could be determined as a valid criteria for deletion and object strongly to the nomination for deletion. _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 23:41, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Meeting the criteria for fair use, the image was uploaded and inserted into the subject articles on 2011.09.19 and has been a feature of both articles continuously four years. _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 14:35, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Mural showing a quote by Andy Offutt Irwin used in an article about Andy Offutt Irwin, not the painter of the mural. While this might be appropriate fair use in an article about the painter (as an example of her work), it seems hard to argue that it meets WP:NFCC#8 here. B (talk) 15:14, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment I am the photographer. I took the photo and uploaded it at specific request of another editor, User:A Softer Answer if I remember correctly. I posted notice about this deletion discussion on A Softer Answer's talk page and the talk page of the Andy Offutt Irwin article. I know little about Andy Offutt Irwin and hence cannot address questions of the relevance/importance of the image to the subject, so take no position on deletion. -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:41, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment I am the editor that requested the upload of the photo to the article. The photo is relevant to this section of the article because it illustrates how widely the quote is used. There is no Wikipedia article on the artist. If there was an article, I could move the photo there and then reference it on Irwin's page with a 'see also' note. Since there is no page for the artist and if the photo is removed, the strongest example of the Irwin's quote being widely used and influential would disappear. Book cover of a book about a living person used, not for commentary on the book, but, rather, as a stock photo of the living person. Though this person is in his 90's, he was a very public figure for over a half a century, numerous photos of him were taken, and we certainly have a reasonable expectation that either a photo could be donated or one could be found that was published in the US without a copyright notice prior to 1978. From googling [2], User:Amdowling is a senior employee of Sweet Adelines International and presumably was acting on her employer's authority when posting this. It seems reasonable to use the image in Sweet Adelines International. You nominated at Commons two images uploaded by kkirchhoff (talk · contribs) and, again, from googling [3], kkirchoff (talk · contribs) is another important person in this organization. These two people are the ones who put out PR for their organization, so it's pretty likely the license is legitimate. --B (talk) 02:19, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Interesting indeed, thanks for doing this research! I see that they've a history of uploading similar content that got deleted - see User_talk:Kkirchhoff. It seems unlikely that the organisation would give them permission to release it as PD (rather than CC-By-SA) and, given the history of these two people uploading poorly described/licensed and low-resolution images I'm guessing they're not fully grasping the implications of the copyright release that they're making (to the point that your digging-work was required to identify that they do indeed have some legitimate claim to make this upload in the first place! I guess this one needs to have its metadata improved and ported over to Commons (and placed in the "category:Sweet Adelines International" Wittylama 10:43, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Photo is of bottle of hot sauce that was uploaded as public domain yet photo includes image of bottle's label which is very likely still protected by copyright, thus making the image non-free and a derivative work regardless of whether photo was taken personally by uploader or the bottle was owned (i.e., purchased) by uploader. File was discussed at WP:CQ#Personal photos of commercial products. and the opinion was that file does not even qualify as a non-free image for upload to Wikipedia per WP:NFCC#1, WP:NFCC#3 and WP:NFCC#8 since the draft article it is being used in already contains a non-free logo for the product which is the same as the bottle's label. Typically, public domain images are tagged with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}}, but this image would not be acceptable for upload to Commons per c:COM:PACKAGING and c:COM:DW, which further makes it licensing as public domain suspect. Fails WP:FREER: pictures like this should have two copyright tags. Also fails WP:NFCC#10c as the FUR isn't for the article containing the image. Stefan2 (talk) 17:41, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Keep. It does, in my opinion, not fail WP:FREER and is relevant in the section it's currently in (but if I'm missing something, please do let me know, as I may be able to fix it): a) There is no known free version of the photo available; b) Could the subject be adequately conveyed by properly sourced text without using the non-free content at all? I would say "no" because were that the case Academy Awards wouldn't have a prominently displayed Oscar; c) The photographer has given permission for use of the photo but I don't think a second copyright is required from the designer of the trophy because they're not really designed; they're mass-produced from different parts screwed and glued together; not really a designed sculpture or piece of art. But like I said earlier, if I've misunderstood something let me know. (I've fixed the missing FUR — the original page the image was too long and is being broken down into articles by year, thus the reason for moving the image — to remain with the related information, but I've only been working on that the last couple of days and hadn't had time to finish everything yet.) Thanks.. pumik9 • (talk) 22:07, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
    • I'm not sure you understand the concern here. There are two sets of rights here - the rights of the designer of the trophy and the rights of the photographer. We have an obvious fair use defense for the former, but not for the latter. Though there will not be a completely "free" version because the trophy is copyrighted, we could be "less non-free" if we had a photo taken by a Wikipedian. --B (talk) 01:52, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
      • OK, if the rights of the photographer are the concern, he gave me full permission to allow the photograph to be published on Wikipedia. I thought I made that clear on the photo's page though — did I do something incorrectly? I still have his email approving of this — Is there something else I need to do? He thought this was a great thing to do. pumik9 • (talk) 04:24, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
        • @Pumik9: Okay, I didn't notice that and that's good to know but unfortunately not quite enough. Wikipedia does not accept images with a Wikipedia-only permission. In other words, asking "can I use it on Wikipedia" is not the right permission. Wikipedia requiresthat the image be released under an acceptable "free" license. Because this photo is a derivative work of a copyrighted object, there are some who believe that this is incompatible with a regular CC-BY-SA license and so my recommendation is to ask that the photographer make his work available under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. WP:CONSENT has a sample form that can be used. You can send him an email with that form (fill out the appropriate portions for him - the image name and the license is the "Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication") and ask him to submit it to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. I apologize for how complicated this is - the purpose of it is that we are trying to build a free content encyclopedia - that is, one that is not encumbered by copyright restrictions. --B (talk) 17:08, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
          • @B: Sigh.. OK, thanks for the patient explanation; I certainly wasn't aware of this. I have emailed the copyright owner as per your instructions and hope he does as asked. (Personally I think this is excessive bureaucracy for something that shouldn't be bureaucratic — I'm surprised Wikipedia gets any third-party photos at all! But then I have to remember that copyright law in many countries isn't as liberal as it is where I am.) Assuming the copyright owner does as asked, then it stays up? But what if this annoys him and he doesn't respond: When does it come down? And thanks again for your help. I just wish this information was part of the upload process so I would've known about it when I was uploading it. pumik9 • (talk) 19:25, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Have you tried having a human (not template) conversation with the uploader about what is required? (Have the friend send am email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org affirming the authorship, the license, and the matter of attribution?) It's obvious that the template messages are sufficiently intimidating and not helping him understand what he needs to do. He even has email enabled - you could send an email if it looks like talk page messages are not being understood. When someone is uploading random stuff they found on the internet, okay, fine, template away, but when he's obviously trying to upload something that if we simply ask the right questions we can get released under an acceptable license, have a HUMAN conversation with the other HUMAN. --B (talk) 00:24, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Keep for now D&B drastically changed their logo all of two weeks ago after using the same one since at least November 2001 (archived webpage). While I'm normally all for clearing out the old logos, this old one is the one by which most people will recognize the company. As such, I don't think it's surplus within a NFCC sense. I'm not saying we should have a library of old logos, but it makes some sense to keep an older one around for at least a little while when they've only just changed the current one. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 00:07, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

2. Use License Website’s information and Services are provided for personal, non-commercial use only. Permission is granted to temporarily download one copy of the materials (information or software) on Flightradar24’s web site for personal, non-commercial transitory viewing only. This is the grant of a license, not a transfer of title, and under this license you may not: Modify or copy the materials; Use the materials for any commercial purpose, or for any public display (commercial or non-commercial); Attempt to decompile or reverse engineer any software contained on Flightradar24's web site; Remove any copyright or other proprietary notations from the materials; or

Transfer the materials to another person or "mirror" the materials on any other server.

  • Surely Flightradar24 can't claim copyright on ADS-B data? Alakzi (talk) 15:59, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment Is it proper for the file uploader to simply delete the tag, as done here [5] ? JoeSperrazza (talk) 16:24, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
  • It's likely to take 24 to 48 hours for some companies to respond to some inquiries - I would rather kill the tag before the file gets deleted.

Firstly, I'd ask you to raise any copyright issues with me directly rather than forcing myself and other contributors to argue the merits of the track in various places.

Flightradar24 says in their press section "Screenshots from Flightradar24.com or any of the Flightradar24 apps may be used for free by media if screenshots are attributed to Flightradar24. Websites publishing screenshots must link to Flightradar24.com."

The use of GPS data is no different here than in Malaysia Airlines 370, which FlighRadar24 explicitly gives permission to use. AHeenen states "Since the location of the aircraft is a fact, not a creative work, and the map traced purports to show the path that Flight 370 traveled based on primary & secondary radar, the flight path is not subject to copyright"

I'll add a similar copyright justification.

Additionally, FlightAware, which I checked the flightradar24 data against in an unpublished graph, has a second set of GPS co-ordinates, and state "Accredited news outlets and members of the media may reproduce or redistribute FlightAware content... contingent that FlightAware is cited..."

BEA permits their photos to be used copyright-free with attribution - the same will happen for charts when they have a full report. These images will be replaced when BEA puts out their final report. -- Aronzak (talk) 16:10, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Flightradar24's Terms and conditions refer to screencaps of the website, embedding parts of the website itself, not press releases that they explicitly release on their twitter account to be copied by journalists and media outlets, as their tweets are intended. Slides from a BEA press conference match the release and they say they're providing raw data to the BEA. In the absence of any evidence that they intend to treat this differently to the Malaysia Airlines 370 disaster where they publicly announce that their data can be used, then the presumption should be that they don't intend to sue Wikimedia commons. If you have such evidence then present it, otherwise there isn't an issue here. -- Aronzak (talk) 17:33, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
On the CSV file that was used by me and other people to produce the map, Mike, who released it publicly, says "I was talking with a lady on CNN for almost 1 hour yesterday to explain the data in first post"
This data is not a copyvio if the person who released it provided it to the media. Because this is the third story on ITN with 166,000 views, it is difficult not to see this as insulting me personally in front of a huge audience. -- Aronzak (talk) 18:07, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Mere facts are not copyrightable, period. Where is the map blank ORIGINALLY from? I'm not seeing that stated on the image description page. That is the only thing here that's potentially an issue - city locations, the data used to draw the line, etc, are not copyrightable. I see that the map is a blow up of File:Germanwings Flight 9525 flight path topographic.png, but where did that map come from? Second problem: the source map is under a CC-BY-SA-3.0 license. The derivative work cannot be posted under the GFDL - it needs to use the CC-BY-SA-3.0. --B (talk) 22:48, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
this one CC-by-sa 4.0 and GFDL. -- Aronzak (talk) 23:11, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Okay, and I see it does say on File:Germanwings Flight 9525 flight path topographic.png what the source is, who the original author is, and has a link to File:France relief location map.jpg. So that's all fine. So my only point of contention is that File:Germanwings Flight 9525 flight path topographic.png is CC-BY-SA-3.0 (which, it would have been nice if AHeneen had chosen to multilicense the derivative work under the same licenses as the source work, but that is by no means a requirement). Because the source image is CC-BY-SA-3.0, then your image can only be CC-BY-SA-3.0. You need to remove GFDL from it. You also should, in the "Author" box say something like this "Cropped from a map by AHeneen. Relief map by Eric Gaba." That way in downstream uses, the authors will be properly attributed. --B (talk) 00:05, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Removed GFDL. Any other changes feel free to modify. -- Aronzak (talk) 02:39, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Keep. If you take a free source, draw a couple of lines and dump a little self-written text onto it, and publish it in accordance with the terms of the source's license, you can't possibly have committed a copyright infringement. To the contrary of what was said above, the source map is licensed under GFDL and CC-BY-SA 4.0, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, and 1.0. There's no requirement that you release the derivative work under CC-BY-SA anything. Nyttend (talk) 00:38, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Today is March 29 2015. Put new nominations in Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2015 March 29 -- (new nomination)

If the current date's page has been started without the header, apply {{subst:Ffd log}} to the top of the day's page.

Please ensure "===March 29===" is at the very top of the new page so that internal page links from the main Files for deletion page (the one you're on now) work.
