This page lists general sanctions that apply to all editors working in particular areas. Individual editors subject to editing restrictions are listed at Wikipedia:Editing restrictions.

General sanctions are a tool used by the community or the Arbitration Committee to improve the editing atmosphere of an article or topic area. When general sanctions are employed, they are specifically detailed instructions by which community consensus or Arbcom motion has empowered administrators to act single-handedly to sanction editors whom are not complying with general behavioral or editorial guidelines and policies.

Types of sanctions

Article probation

Editors making disruptive edits to articles which are on probation may be banned by an administrator from further editing of such articles as well as related articles and/or project pages. Anyone editing an article on probation should be especially mindful of content policies, such as WP:NPOV, and interaction policies, such as WP:CIVIL, WP:NPA, WP:3RR, and WP:POINT. Discretionary sanctions

In areas of conflict the Arbitration Committee occasionally authorizes administrators to impose sanctions on editors working on pages if after a warning they repeatedly or seriously fail to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process. Administrators may impose a broad range of sanctions including blocks of up to one year, article or topic bans and revert restrictions. The community may authorize sanctions which echo those imposed by the Arbitration Committee, with the exception of appeal and logging procedures.

Revert restrictions

Pages or topic areas may be subject to restrictions on the number of reverts an editor may perform in a specific period of time. See Wikipedia:Edit warring#Other revert rules for more information.

Process

Arbcom

The Arbitration Committee may impose general sanctions on all editors working in a particular area, usually following a request for arbitration. Administrators employing these sanctions are reminded of the need to issue appropriate notifications and to log all sanctions as specified in each case. Such general sanctions may be revoked by the Committee by passing a "motion in a prior case".

Community

Usually at an administrators' noticeboard, the community may also impose general sanctions on all editors working in a particular area. Administrators employing these sanctions are reminded of the need to issue appropriate notifications and to log all sanctions as specified in each case. These notifications, sometimes called warnings, are an informal process by which an editor editing in a topic area under general sanctions is made aware that the general sanctions exist. Typically, administrators may not impose sanctions unless an editor is made aware of the existence of these sanctions. Any editor may make another editor aware of the sanctions and then log the notification. The notification may not be revoked because it is not a warning about editor behavior; it is a warning about general sanctions. However, editors or administrators wishing to overturn an action carried out under the direction of general sanctions require approval of the imposing administrator or a consensus at an appropriate community noticeboard. If general sanctions are no longer needed in a topic area, they may be revoked at the same venue they were created by community consensus.

Falun Gong (Log)	Falun Gong and all closely related articles	Discretionary sanctions	Standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for "Falun Gong" and all closely related articles.
Falun Gong 2 (Log)	All articles relating to the Falun Gong movement and/or the persecution thereof	Mandated external review	At the discretion of any uninvolved administrator, editors may be placed on mandated external review for all articles relating to the Falun Gong movement and/or the persecution thereof, broadly construed. Editors on mandated external review must observe the following restrictions on editing within the designated subject area: Any major edit (defined as any edit that goes beyond simple and uncontroversial spelling, grammatical, and/or stylistic corrections to article content) must be proposed on the article's talk page. This proposal must be discussed by interested editors until a consensus to make the edit is formed. Once consensus has been reached in support of the edit, the proposal must be reviewed by an uninvolved editor for neutrality and verifiability of the information presented. When approval is received from the uninvolved editor, the editor subject to mandated external review may make the edit to the article. Violations of these restrictions may be reported to Arbitration Enforcement.
Free Republic (Log)	Free Republic and Democratic Underground	Article probation	It is expected that the article will be improved to conform with Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, that information contained in it will be supported by verifiable information from reliable sources. The article may be reviewed on the motion of any arbitrator, or upon acceptance by the Arbitration Committee of a motion made by any user. Users whose editing is disruptive may be banned or their editing restricted as the result of a review. Amended by motion Additionally, any uninvolved administrator may impose a reasonable editing restriction (for example, 1RR) or page ban upon any editor who repeatedly engages in disruptive or uncivil editing of Free Republic or any closely related page. Prior to imposing such a ban or restriction, a warning should be given on the affected user's talkpage. Scientology (Log)	Articles related to Scientology or Scientologists, broadly defined, as well as the respective article talk pages and participation in any Wikipedia process relating to those articles.	General restriction	Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, ban any editor from editing within the Scientology topic. Prior to topic banning the editor, the administrator will leave a message on the editor's talk page, linking to this paragraph, warning the editor that a topic ban is contemplated and outlining the behaviours for which it is contemplated. If the editor fails to heed the warning, the editor may be topic banned, initially, for three months, then with additional topic bans increasing in duration to a maximum of one year. Any editor who, in the judgment of an uninvolved administrator, is (i) focused primarily on Scientology or Scientologists and (ii) clearly engaged in promoting an identifiable agenda may be topic-banned for up to one year. Any editor topic banned under this sanction may be re-blocked at the expiry of a topic ban if they recommence editing in the topic having made few or no significant edits outside of it during the period of the topic ban.

This may include any user who was a party to this case, or any other user after a warning has been given. The administrator shall notify the user on his or her talkpage and make an entry on Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/The Troubles#Log of blocks, bans, and probations. The terms of probation, if imposed on any editor, are set forth in the enforcement ruling below.
