Hope is precious and great joy is found in living

Thank you for the sapphire—cornflower blue is a color of some significance to me. In the maelstrom that Wikipedia can sometimes be, remember these words from Ode to Joy:

   Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
   Eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
   Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
   Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
   Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
   Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!

Walk lightly and remain yourself, above the fray. StaniStani  09:20, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, it helps to open my shop again. - I sang the words last year, here, helping. The blue colour is also of significance to me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:28, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I'm so glad to see you still around Gerda, and still promoting kindness and love. Every day you share your gift of life, of music, of thought, of acceptance, of tolerance, and of love. I know you are born of the great country of Germany, and in many ways I share that heritage. I was born and raised in the US; but I thought I might share this with you because the whole idea makes me think of you:

Thank you, Ched. - Is this what you requested? (And what I hesitate to put on your user page, afraid of another round of arb enforcement) - I found no parameter for gender=male in {{infobox person}}.
"This little light of mine" was regularly sung at a Sunday Gospel Brunch, by a gospel group lead by an enormous woman (enormous both in body and spirit), and the restaurant guests, children only in the first verse, - thanks for bringing back lovely memories!

Thanks for great work on the structure and sources of Bach's Mass in B minor!

I don't know the best way or place to write to you to thank you. (There is a heart icon that links to a way to send appreciation, but I don't understand it.) So, this is where I am thanking you for all the work on the sources of the movements of the mass, etc. After making a few edits today, I saw the history and see all you have done to create (I think) and improve this page. A well-deserved barnstar

The Barnstar of Integrity
Gerda, for your ceaseless efforts across the project to recognize and encourage civility, goodwill, and all manner of useful contributions -- and just generally to foster a collegial and warm atmosphere -- I hope you will accept this barnstar. I had considered giving you the Random Acts of Kindness star or the PumpkinSky Prize, but (unsurprisingly) I find they've already been awarded, so I've settled on this option, fresh and just as appropriate as it is. All my best. Snow talk 03:34, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The "notorious infoboxes criminal" accepts with delight! I was planning to write on Geh aus, mein Herz, und suche Freud today (my mom's favourite song on her birthday) which is about seeking joy, - now joy just comes ;) - Thank you, made my day! (I still plan to expand the article, it's not too obvious anyway that it's about actively seeking joy when you don't see any.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:45, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, geteilte Freude ist doppelte Freude, as the old chestnut goes -- and it's always nice in particular to share it with someone who so exemplifies that perspective. But regardless of the source, I hope the day brings you more joy still.  :) Snow talk 10:47, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Roth and Fowles, epitaphs and graves

Hi Gerda. Do you remember what I said here? I took a long time to upload that image for the Ernst Roth article. Now I've finally managed to do the same for the Leonard N. Fowles article. It being a musical subject and both having epitaphs related to that, I thought you might appreciate a note about this. On another note, I mentioned decay of graves in that comment back in January 2014, and you can see for yourself the difference in the condition of the graves if you look at the articles: William Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, Ernst Roth, Francis Francis (writer), Herbert Edgar Weston, Frederick James Camm, Leonard N. Fowles, Laurence Oliphant (author), Joseph Jackson Howard, Edward Stanley Gibbons. Carcharoth (talk) 10:06, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

One happy editor

Dear Gerda, - I want to thank you, so much, for naming me an "awesome Wikipedian" for my work on the Mark Satin biography, and for giving me my day! As you may know, the article was "Today's featured article" on the Main Page that day, and I (with others' help) have had to spend all my Wikipedia time since then digging out from under various malicious edits and inappropriate edits. Receiving the award when I did made these last 10 days much more bearable for me.

I would love to put news of the award on my talk page! I've done so in the text, but I would prefer doing so with a Userbox, particularly if it has that gorgeous blue sapphire on it. Is there one? I'll watch this space for your reply. - Babel41 (talk) 04:21, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There is a box, further down on the awards list, created by the earlier givers. There is no one with the sapphire, - the square box would not match the designer's ideas. Create something?
This user has been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian on (insert date with link).
I dropped the "their own day" because that was true only the first year, and I don't like "his or her" anyway ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:19, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and "their own day" may be too, um, precious to boot. But I love the box above and as you'll see, I simply linked the "Awesome Wikipedian" phrase in it to the PumpkinSky Prize page, which appears to go from 2012 right up to the present. I hope that's not stepping on any toes. - Babel41 (talk) 06:53, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, good idea. I made it an inline link. We'll see about the toes ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:01, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Non Barnstar

Barnstars are well intended but for my taste they are a little too impersonal; sort of like a store-bought greeting card versus a handwritten letter. So I am taking this opportunity to say that Wikipedia is a better place because you are here. I wish you all the best. PS: Have you ever sung Berg's Altenberg Lieder? I think maybe it is not quite your style of music but I find the pieces hauntingly beautiful, and the words are simple but profound. Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 03:53, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the lovely musical note! No, I didn't sing those songs, nor even know them (yet), - I like simple but profound! - Did you know that "you" are mentioned on my user page, sort of? Look for laugh ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:03, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Great work, Gerda. I have in my hands Bärenreiter's Urtext of Bach's cantatas, part 3. There's a photo of a page from the manuscript. Would it be useful to upload scan to commons? It should be in PD, I guess. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 13:20, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would be nice. I am no expert on image right. Next to come: O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad, BWV 165, in case you can add to that also, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:26, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded the first page of the manuscript, by Johann Andreas Kuhnau, Bach's copyist in Leipzig, but the quality is terrible, and I don't know why. I asked for deletion on Commons :( There's another page from the manuscript in my source, by Bach himself (end of the 1st part + beginning of the 2nd (Aria for alto, oboe and cello/continuo)). The complete manuscript is not preserved, according to the source. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 16:17, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Will use the other pic later (needs rearranging, #1 made lead, church and other churches to gallery, #2 about where #1 is now), probably after singing _ Te -e _ De -um ;)
It's up to you - you are better informed and this is your work. Good luck with the performance :) --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 08:01, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, there are no images or notes related to BWV 165 in Die Neue Bach-Ausgabe (NBA). The cantate is in the part 6 of the urtext. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 16:29, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gender stuff

During the GGTF case, I advised Arbcom to site-ban no one. My advice wasn't taken & as a result, the shockwaves continue to spread :( GoodDay (talk) 21:29, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In the infoboxes case, I spoke against no one, my advice wasn't taken & as a result, we still try to "clarify" kafkaesque restrictions. My friend was almost banned. Why? Evidence? He had been banned twice before, that's enough, see also. - I just learned the term shero, from a new user ;) - Did you see that the first word given to me was Hope? the blue stone

Dear Gerda, Thankyou for the anniversary message and the fanfare (that's a good article) - the stone, like the music, has a seraphic clarity and spiritual warmth. Just what one needs in these cruel months of the year. I have been reading the psalms in Latin, with St Augustine's comments, and am amazed. Also Jeremy Irons's Four Quartets (Eliot) (Radio 4 broadcast) is still reverberating - that dude is right on the vibe. So we are rather off in our own world, and loving it! ;) kind regards Eebahgum (talk) 22:08, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Like how you know what to watch, or where.

But there's one thing I do know. If you didn't exist we'd be poorer. Much poorer.

Thanks Gerda. (everyone else can wonder, or work it out, or ask, or fail to care...).

I suppose that another way to comment about the "curtains" argument would be to say: "Curtains conceal, infoboxes reveal."
Orwell does indeed offer a number of good recommendations for writing, which I try to keep in mind when I write and edit.
As one contributes to Wikipedia, one hopes that someone, somewhere will understand what one has written and will perhaps find it useful.

Bruckner's Te Deum - Entwurffassung 1881

Beste Gerda,

Hans Roelofs provided me with a copy from a private CD of an "experimental" performance of the 1881 draft-version of Bruckner's Te Deum.

It is a live performance, which occurred on 07-10-2003 in Nürnberg. The draft version of 1881, which includes the vocal scores and some basic orchestration, is shorter than the final version (357 bars versus 513 bars). In particular the Aeterna fac is different and much shorter, and the final fugue is not yet composed. I find it very interesting. I have added a mention to it on the page Te Deum (Bruckner).

Gerda Arendt, your suggestions about going the extra mile with Nora Volkow to get GA status inspired me to put pedal to the metal on a woman on our very large "to do" list who's nowhere near as famous, but incredibly awesome. I have nothing to do with biography project, and have never tried to get an article to GA status (although have been the reviewer for one in Project Medicine). @Hildabast: I finally managed to get all 50 photos on the outcomes page :) Just pulled up the category page in commons pasted the image string from there and then used the file name from the edit-a-thon page. One "to-do" checked off my list. Sorry Hildabast, I cannot help you with GA status. I am too new an editor. I am trying to get my first GA status on the Feminism in Mexico piece that I did and could use suggestions as well. :) SusunW (talk) 15:19, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Hilda: I don't know what to tell you because I am intentionally on the receiving end of GA, - my initials ;) - I don't do reviews because as not a native speaker I would not dare to judge prose. You can do two things, simply put the nomination on top of the article talk (go to WP:GA and look at the instructions, you will have to pick a group, probably medicine) and see how it goes, or talk to a reviewer first, such as RHM22 (who did two exquisite reviews for me in 2015, see my user page). If things are missing in the article, a reviewer will give you a week to improve. The only biography I brought to GA status was Patrice Chéreau. Perhaps look at other bio GAs to find out what will be expected. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:33, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, SusunW, Gerda Arendt! That's a big help. If for no other reason than to know when I embark on it, I need to do it when I'm not going into a super busy time at work. And thanks for incorporating all the photos. Hildabast (talk) 16:04, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

AE request result

As a result of this AE thread[2], User:Gerda Arendt, you are advised that your two comment limit, in discussions about Infoboxes, is a bright-line rule and that conduct like that exhibited at the Lawrence Olivier article's talk page[3] is a breach of your restriction and will be sanctioned if repeated--Cailil talk 17:21, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

new essay

The ArbCom case against me is vexatious indeed - I shall not contend against those who taste blood. The main complaint even includes my essays - so I wrote one which I hope you will appreciate WP:Wikipedia and shipwrights. It would be fun to see how others react, indeed. Warm regards, Collect (talk) 04:42, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I defend that Kafka was a realist. (Look at the AE thread above.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:22, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unionskirche, Idstein

Basically I changed the 17th century church to 17th century protestant church. I just updated that to 16th based on your comment. Since is by denomination and is not, the first one should be used when known. As to including remodeling in a century category. I don't believe there are any specific guidelines. So someone decides about it being significant enough (actually was the remodel defining?) which would determine if the category was needed. I'm adjusting many categories so if I'm only looking at the existing categories and not reading the article I will not be questioning or changing the existing determination. How this makes sense. Vegaswikian (talk) 16:18, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It does make sense. If you look at the interior (you may have seen it in the Signpost), it's definitively 17th century looks ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:22, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are such a perfectionist...:-) — Ched :  ?  00:07, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, FA and TFA is a big difference, especially if a FA has not been on the Main page and could perhaps use a few supports. I didn't participate in the FAC for a reason, - The Tower House was more inviting, or look at Gary Cooper ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:11, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I gave up on all that stuff. I helped a few folks with GA and FA things a while back, but I saw how political everything was.
  • I know that it is not true, both, but what can you do against fears? Andy has better things to do. Anybody with a mind knowing the situation would know better than to "attack" certain articles. Anybody with a mind NOT knowing the situation may - however - miss something and try to serve the readers. - Before we judge if there is "consensus", we need to define what consensus. I like Gary Cooper and said so. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:59, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

I would give you an award but I don't know how. Thank you for your tireless work on Twitchell. So glad we got the photo reinstated. Thank you for the beaucoup edits you have made on behalf of the Women's History Month overview. Thanks for reviewing so many of my DYK. The list is endless. I appreciate you. I love the prose rewards, see under blushing above ;) - It's lovely to work with you, just looking at the photos of women you uploaded is uplifting, so are the nice infoboxes you give your articles, and the stories you have to tell! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:52, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
