Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (known internationally as Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation)[7] is a 2018 American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the third installment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise and the sequel to Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015). The film is directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and written by Tartakovsky and Michael McCullers, and features Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Molly Shannon, Fran Drescher, and Mel Brooks reprising their roles as well as new additions to the cast like Kathryn Hahn and Jim Gaffigan.
Taking place a few months after the events of the previous film, the story centers on Dracula, Mavis, Johnny, and the rest of their family, both human and monster, and friends as they take a vacation on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship, where Dracula suddenly becomes attracted to the ship's mysterious captain Ericka. What Dracula doesn't know is that Erika is secretly the great-granddaughter of Abraham Van Helsing, the notorious monster slayer and Dracula's ancient archenemy.[8] Now it is time for Mavis to be the leader of the "Drac Pack" and rally up everyone so they can stop Erika and save Dracula, before it's too late.
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation premiered at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 13, 2018 and is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 13, 2018.
Plot
The film starts in 1897 where it shows the monsters on the train in disguises trying to hide from the humans while going to Budapest. Until Abraham Van Helsing arrives on the train and unveil the monsters. The monsters get on top of the train and get chased by him. After Dracula pushes them off the train he seemingly defeats Van Helsing after a couple of failures throughout the years.
In the present day, a few months after the events of the previous film, Dracula is running his hotel business smoothly when Mavis (Selena Gomez) announces to him that they will be going on a cruise so he can get a vacation from giving vacations. The next day Dracula, Mavis, Johnny (Andy Samberg) and the rest of their family goes on board the cruise ship. Everyone has fun on board when Dracula accidentally bumps into the ship's captain, Erika (Kathryn Hahn) who is a human. He immediately becomes attracted to her and asks her out on a date in the ship's dining room.
Mavis realises that Erika is secretly the great granddaughter of Abraham Van Helsing when she finds an old photograph of Erika as an infant in the arms of Van Helsing. Mavis teams up with Johnny and the rest of the pack to try and find Dracula on the ship and save him from Erika. Meanwhile, at the dining room, Dracula agitates Erika by telling a story of how Van Helsing fell flat on his face when Dracula was chasing him. As Dracula laughs hysterically about it, Erika has had enough and gives Dracula some perfume as a gift. He sprays himself but only then realises it's actually garlic perfume. He starts having a seizure and is taken away by her.
Mavis and the pack eventually track down Erika who has Dracula tied up with garlic surrounding him. Mavis tries to talk Erika out of her plan to kill Dracula, but the fridge door swings open revealing Abraham Van Helsing himself who says he has been in a cryogenic sleep. He pulls out his proton pack to shoot all the monsters, when Dennis and Winnie sneak up behind him and give him a wedgie which causes him to fall over. Dracula gets freed and confronts both Erika and Abraham. He tells them that this vacation is about family and the monsters are no different from the humans. Erika agrees and goes with Dracula. Dracula tells Abraham he can choose to be a loving great grandfather to redeem himself and understand the love for family. Dracula and Erika both hug him which changes his heart and he hugs them back. Everyone is then seen having a party on the deck and dancing.
Months later back at Hotel Transylvania, Dracula proposes to Erika. After stuttering in a similar fashion to her boyfriend when they first met, she happily accepts.

Production
In September 2015, Michelle Murdocca, the film's producer, said before the second film's release that the studio was "talking about number 3 and moving forward and taking the franchise to the next level", but she and director Genndy Tartakovsky would not return, since they were working on Tartakovsky's Can You Imagine?[14] before that project was later shelved.[15] That same month, Tartakovsky revealed that he would not be returning for the sequel, telling TheWrap that "two is enough. I have a lot of other ideas, and I kind of have to express them and have them come out."[16] In November 2015, Sony Pictures Animation announced that the third film, under the tentative title of Hotel Transylvania 3, will be released on September 21, 2018.[17]
Despite previously leaving the series to develop other projects, Tartakovsky later confirmed that he would return as the director for this installment.[9][14] Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg would also reprise their previous roles as Dracula, Mavis, and Johnny in the film, which was being written by Austin Powers writer Michael McCullers.[9] In June 2016, Sony Pictures Animation also confirmed that director Tartakovsky would be returning for the third film, after taking a leave of absence to work on the final season of his show Samurai Jack.[18] According to Tartakovsky, he returned after he got an inspiration from a "miserable" family vacation and major inspiration for the film from the Chevy Chase National Lampoon's Vacation movies as the film would take place aboard a cruise ship.[19][20][21] By early November 2017, the film had been entitled as Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.[22]
Music
Mark Mothersbaugh scored the third film, since he previously scored the first two films.
