Vandalism help request from 174.64.17.141
I have noticed some vandalism at PAGENAME. Namely, BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE VANDALISM HERE. Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you, 174.64.17.141 (talk) 17:00, 13 May 2022 (UTC)<!--Reported via Help:Simple guide to vandalism cleanup-->

"(A persistent myth has pervaded the biographical literature, to the effect that MacArthur wore a "specially designed sharkskin uniform" at the 1936 ceremony to go with his new rank of Philippine Field Marshal. Richard Meixsel has debunked this story; in fact the special uniform was "the creation of a poorly informed journalist in 1937 who mistook a recently introduced U.S. Army white dress uniform for a distinctive field marshal's attire.")[120]"

Myths and legends have no place in factual articles. This alleged "myth" is new to me. I have NEVER, in 62 years, heard this in a documentary or in a book. Please remove and investigate the admistrator responsible for its inclusion.

How does this piece of code work?

On Template:FGAN, there is the following code:

{{{}#if:{}|{well written}| Pass}}

Why is there a {} before the #if, and what does it do? What is the difference between that and

{{#if:{}|{well written}| Pass}}

I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 03:58, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@I.hate.spam.mail.here That code is used so that when you substitute the template the output of the if statement is substituted onto the page, rather than the if statement code. See mw:Help:Substitution#Multilevel_substitution. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 11:32, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
An explanation of what how it works might be useful too. If you write {{safesubst:#if: ... in a template directly then when you save the template page the substitution will be performed and the template code will contain the output of the if statement. By using {} the safesub is only processed when the template is evaluated and parameters substituted, because you're providing it as the default output of the parameter "". 163.1.15.238 (talk) 11:40, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, thanks! I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 17:48, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble inserting link

I've tried to add a film, The 25th Hour, to actor Brian Cox's page but it's not working for me. If anybody can show me what I got wrong, I'd appreciate it. Bodding (talk) 04:11, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bodding. It looks like our article on the 2002 film is at 25th Hour. You'll also want to put the single quotes we use for italicization outside the square brackets. The final markup should be
25th Hour (2002)
Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:17, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much. I appreciate the help. Bodding (talk) 17:30, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodding: I fixed your link. The title of our article about the film is 25th Hour, not "The 25th Hour (2002 film)". Deor (talk) 12:27, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I appreciate the help. Bodding (talk) 17:29, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Information warnings

How do I respond to a user when they include apparent personal information, like telephone numbers? Nythar (talk) 06:26, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You remove the personal information, and tell them it that they shouldn't do that. --Jayron32 11:18, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But then the personal information shows up in the history. I thought I'd seen cases where such things have been removed and somehow blocked in, or excised from the history. Uporządnicki (talk) 14:30, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For that you'd want to request a WP:REVDEL. DonIago (talk) 15:01, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article - Terry Quinn - Poet

I went into this page to add more material and found it had been edited and placed with Terry O Quinn. there is not relatonship and these are separate entries and should be treated as such Terry Quinn is a Derby poet not to be confused with O'QUINN an American actor. please retsore the original page help me to add more information — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trentius (talkcontribs) 11:51, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Trentius: Wikipedia does not appear to have a page named Terry Quinn which is a redirect to Terry O'Quinn. It seems you have previously removed the redirect and attempted to create an article about the poet (which was unsourced). If you wish to write an article about Quinn (rather than O'Quinn) please review the guide to article creation and the notability guidelines. Some links will also be left at your talk page which will hopefully assist you. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 12:11, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Created a template

Hi everyone. I was hoping to create a new template which is essentially Template:Talk quote inline but with a darker font color. I created Template:Talk quote inline darker and took these steps:

1. I copied over the code from the original template
2. I created Template:Talk quote inline darker/styles.css with content copied from Template:Talk quote inline/styles.css
3. I changed the hex color code to a darker green in the style sheet
4. I changed the new template page to point to the new style sheet

These steps did not achieve the desired result. In testing, the issue I had is that the color of test content using the new template always matched the color of the old. Disturbingly, they both took on whatever color I set in my style sheet. Did I somehow break the original template? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:55, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Firefangledfeathers: The hex value in both .css sheets are the same from what I can tell. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:03, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tenryuu. I rolled back to the original hex code when I got worried that I might be breaking the old tq template. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 22:03, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Firefangledfeathers I think (and I might be mistaken here, I'm not 100% certain about the operation of mediawiki sanitised CSS) the issue is that you've used the same class names in your new template as were used in the old one. When a page is loaded using both the new and the old template you get two style sheets loaded, and you get a CSS conflict as both contain a definition for "inline-quote-talk" "inline-quote-talk-italic" and "inline-quote-talk-marks". When CSS conflicts occur the last CSS page loaded is the one used and earlier ones are overwritten. You need to rename the definitions in the CSS sheet and change the definitions used in the new template to match. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 13:24, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That was it! Thanks. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:55, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I learned something new today. I'll keep this in mind if I ever decide to fiddle with CSS. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:23, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New question

I notice when i'm logged out of Wikipedia when I hover my mouse over a link I can see part of the lead title and the picture of the page. But when i'm logged in and I hover my mouse over a link it does show anything. Is there anyway to change this in settings? --Aaron106 (talk) 20:38, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Aaron106: try turning on Navigation Popups gadget in your preferences. RudolfRed (talk) 20:50, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: thank you although doesn't the look the same, would there be anyway to make it look the same like when you're logged out? --Aaron106 (talk) 21:00, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Aaron106: You may be thinking of Page Previews, which you can enable at Preferences → Appearance → Reading Preferences → Tick Enable page previews (get quick previews of a topic while reading a page). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:06, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ghost Archive

Hi Folks!!. Does anybody know about Ghost Archives at https://ghostarchive.org? An example can be found at Harold Lloyd. Is it genuine and authorised, if such a thing exist and needs to be authorised. Is it a good service, for example. I don't have much clue about how they on work on Wikipedia, except in refs. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 20:56, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I just see the one link that has a backup link to ghostarchive from one of the references, In the "cite web" template there is an option for an archive URL and it's possible the person creating that reference put that one in there. I am a librarian who kind of keeps up with the permalinking space and I had never heard of it before. The website is registered in Canada and has all the personal information on ownership privatized. There is a Tumblrblog which is likewise anonymous. The site has been around since August 2021. No versions of their About page that I have seen have any personal information on them. For me personally, I continue to rely on Archive.org. Jessamyn (my talk page) 21:13, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jessamyn: I use Archive.org as well. The editor @Rlink2: is putting in hundreds. Is it genuine? I've not heard of it up until this point. scope_creepTalk 07:40, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep Yes, it is a legitimate archiving site, it's got a listing at WP:WEBARCHIVES if you want to know more about using it. This site is quite good at archiving JavaScript heavy pages. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 12:05, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep hello again, nice to see you here, when i have time I should return back to AfD.
Well as Jessamyn said the site has been active since last year and its been in use since then so I am a little suprised you haven't heard of it but again when discussion tools was activated people still didn't know even with the big banner on watchlists.
The site does the job, and it works for things like Youtube videos and Instagram. I use all 3 of the archiving websites, all are good for me. Rlink2 (talk) 12:02, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Restore revision

I think this is supposed to be in the Edit Summary box when restoring a old revision, "Restored revision 1074725345 by Example (talk): Reverted test edit". Why am I not seeing this? --Aaron106 (talk) 22:30, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aaron106. Is it possible you are pressing the undo button in the page history? If so, does then an edit window open with a red warning above it saying "The edit could not be undone due to conflicting intermediate edits; if you wish to undo the change, it must be done manually."? – NJD-DE (talk) 22:54, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi no I don't see that warning, when i restore a revision of a page I go to View history > prev > Edit source and there I see a blank box in the edit summary when i think i should be seeing "Restored revision 1074725345 by Example (talk): Reverted test edit" --Aaron106 (talk) 22:57, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok got it now I think. Edit summaries like "Restored revision 1074725345 by Example (talk): Reverted test edit" are usually the result of using an anti-vandal tool like Twinkle. It adds a specific button on the old version of an article named "[restore this version]". When hitting it a popup appears asking you to provide an explanation, e.g. "Reverted test edit". It will then revert to this version and produce the edit summary you are referring to. When simply going back to an old revision and editing it there won't be an automated edit summary. – NJD-DE (talk) 23:06, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NJD-DE Thank you I just tested this out right now in my Sandbox, & is Twinkle the only way to show this message? --Aaron106 (talk) 23:12, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When undoing specific revisions a similar text is prefilled as edit summary (that was what I first thought you were trying to do). Afaik edit summaries like this when restoring old versions of an article are only possible with additional tools/scripts such as Twinkle. There would be alternatives to Twinkle of course. – NJD-DE (talk) 23:19, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NJD-DE But officialy Wikipedia on their website only lets you use Twinkle to do this? --Aaron106 (talk) 23:21, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NJD-DE And finally how do I get it to show "reverted good faith efforts by" I can't see to find it when I click Undo --Aaron106 (talk) 23:30, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can check out the Twinkle doc for more information on what it can or can't do. I think the section Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc#Restore_and_rollback might be of interest. Any actions done using a script are still in your responsibility. Other tools can also be used, e.g. Red-Warn. However, Twinkle is probably the most commonly used one. – NJD-DE (talk) 23:36, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WP:VANDAL

My IP is blocked. How can I report a vandal to a page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.229.154.182 (talk) 09:19, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That you were able to post here shows you are not blocked. Vandal reports may be made at WP:AIV. Mjroots (talk) 10:02, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Mjroots, I believe the IP is questioning edits made to the Ted Stamm article by this 185.167.77.136 IP - which is under extended protection, so it's entirely possible they are unable to edit that particular article which they (assuming a new user) may have mistaken for being blocked. Chaheel Riens (talk) 12:47, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens: 185.167.77.136 has been blocked under suspicion as a proxy. There are instructions on the block notice if the block was applied in error. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:03, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
185.229.154.182 - if an article is semi-protected, such as the Ted Stamm article is, then the talk page (in this case talk:Ted Stamm) should be available for you to use. Mjroots (talk) 13:04, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Tenryuu, I knew that, but it wasn't pertinent to the OP's original comment. I was just pointing out the reasoning as to why the IP may have thought they were blocked if they were trying to edit an EP article, which also has relevance to Mjroots' comment above - if they thought they were blocked, it may not have occurred to them to try the talk page. Inconsistent Editing templates

When I edit pages, it is inconsistent which templates I have above the edit window. I always have the template in grey brown that is two rows for which the top row starts out Undo arrow, redo arrow, B in Bold, I in Italics, U in Underline S with strike. *Sometimes* I get the light grey template above that that has a single row that starts Bold, Italics Signature and timestamp, Link, images and media and ends with "Advanced" "Special characters" "Help" "Cite" with menu arrows on the four. Any idea what I can do to make the light grey template occur always?Naraht (talk) 13:24, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Naraht: They are called toolbars. The first you describe is wikEd. Registered users can enable it at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. It's disabled by default and unregistered users don't have it. The other toolbar is the default Wikipedia:RefToolbar/2.0. Both toolbars use JavaScript and can fail if there are issues with JavaScript in the gadgets you enable, or the scripts in User:Naraht/common.js, and either User:Naraht/vector.js or User:Naraht/monobook.js if your skin is Vector or MonoBook. What is your skin at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? If you log out (just temporarily for testing without saving edits) then does the default toolbar appear consistently? What if you are logged in but disable wikEd in preferences? PrimeHunter (talk) 17:48, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter:My skin is Vector Legacy (I've been working here since 2005. :) ). WikEd doesn't appear to be giving me problems. RefToolbar appears to be the one not showing up all of the time. It seems to be worse when I open multiple windows for editing in quick succession. I'll trying updating to the new Vector and move things over to see if that helps. If it doesn't I'll try logging out and seeing if that makes it show up consistently.Naraht (talk) 18:09, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: I've moved to Vector 2022. Not sure if it was true before or not, but it appears that my browser simply can't handle if the RefToolbar is loading into two tabs at the same time. If I edit source an article and wait for it to fully come up before I edit source another one then it appears that RefToolbar comes up consistently. May be worthwhile to see if this is a Chrome issue or something else. With the knowledge you have given me and my results, it might be worthwhile to go over to WP:VPT for more info.Naraht (talk) 18:22, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rules i guess

Am i allowed to make an article on my own short story or even youtubers? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DevDrawn (talkcontribs) 14:18, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DevDrawn: Hello Dev! The answer to your questions are, for your own short story, definitely no. Per WP:FORUM and WP:1DAY, Wikipedia is not for things you just made up one day. Youtubers, while some do have articles here on Wikipedia, usually they haven't been determined to be notable enough to get their own article. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:20, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DevDrawn: The most fundamental "rule": Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. If a subject is notable by our definition (WP:N), then we want to have an article about it. If a subject in not notable by our definition, then we do not want an article about it and we will delete any attempt to create such an article. We have evolved a lot of secondary "rules" to support this basic rule. -Arch dude (talk) 15:19, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your short story would have to be talked about in published, reliable sources, independent of you, and you would have to ask somebody else to write it, as writing with a conflict of interest is not encouraged. It would probably sound like an advertisement. The same applies to YouTubers, but also with the biographies of living persons guidelines. I would also recommend on your first article to go through the articles for creation process, so people can review your potential articles and give you suggestions for improvement.

edit draft title

Hello, AvonMooch. In general, you change the title of an article or other page by moving it. But in general, it's not worth bothering about moving a draft to a better title: the title won't affect the review process, and the reviewing editor who accepts the draft will move it to an appropriately-titled article. I guess this is about Draft:David J. Brown (artist)? ColinFine (talk) 16:51, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Almacka, BTW, you--and perhaps more importantly, your director--need to know this. It's not your "Director's Wikipedia page." It is an article about your Director, ideally written by people with no connection to your Director, and neither owned or controlled by your Director. Anybody may edit the article, and as long as the rules are followed (the rules ARE particularly strict for articles about living people), those edits are likely to stand at least until the next person edits. And that will have nothing to do with whether your Director likes the edits or not. Uporządnicki (talk) 14:26, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article for Deletion - Done Wrong Mestizos in the United States

The editor User:Koire292 has attempted to nominate Mestizos in the United States for deletion. They are a new user so they are not yet registered. They have already added the Deletion Template on the page and linked it to an page named Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mestizos in the United States. I had thought about nominating the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mestizos in the United States for a SD and then removing the Deletion Template on Mestizos in the United States, but that does not feel like the right thing to do. I'm not great at the coding part of Wikipedia and I am unsure of what to do from here. I feel the user has a right to express their opinion that they want this article deleted. I just don't know how to help them from here. Can someone else provide assistance? Thank you,--VVikingTalkEdits 22:52, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Viewmont Viking: Your comment here and on the user's talk page is confusing. Why do you think this user is not registered and logged in? RudolfRed (talk) 23:54, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The AfD is malformed, which needs fixing. Other than that, you can't prevent an article from being nominated for deletion... Although it seems that the user is more looking for the term to be removed. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 23:58, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Viewmont Viking: I've gone ahead and fixed the nomination as a courtesy, though I strongly suspect that the nominator won't get the result that they're looking for. --Finngall talk 00:27, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Viewmont Viking Right, since Koire292 has a username, they are "registered". And Finngall is probably right. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 07:26, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@User:RudolfRed, @User:Lee Vilenski, @User:Finngall Rudolfred, my apologies for stating they did not have a registered account, for some reason when I saw registered account I was thinking it meant a Confirmed account. Vilenski, as for me preventing User:Koire292 from nominating the article, that was never my intention, my intention was to ensure the article got nominated for them. Thank you Finngall, I appreciate you correcting it as a courtesy, I also don't think it the nominator will get the result they are looking for, but at least they have the opportunity to try. --VVikingTalkEdits 13:18, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I used the text editor and toolbar buttons and ended up with: ==Gallery== <gallery> </gallery>

All 3 image files uploaded OK but when I save my edit the "Gallery" heading is present but no photos are displayed.

What should I do to fix this?

I have fixed it for you, the square brackets were not needed. Theroadislong (talk) 10:53, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, I'm a newby contributor "just trying" without doing any proper study of tutorials. I've got some more historic photos to contribute, so off I go. Asmdorje (talk) 06:32, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Asmdorje: Are you uploading photos that you took yourself or did you find them somewhere online? If you didn't take these photos yourself, then you can't really claim them as your c:COM:Own work for Commons' purposes and you will need to get the c:COM:CONSENT of the person who did take them. If you did take these photos yourself, then you should try to upload them with their original c:COM:EXIF data instead of scanning them; in the latter case, you may be asked to verify your COM:CONSENT as explained in c:COM:VRT#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT? because high resolution scans often are tagged for review per c:COM:EVID. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:20, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Slurs

There was a sexual slur on a page and I wanted to replace it with a non slur that meant the same thing (I was replacing dykes with the word gays) and it got removed — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1009:B125:AC8C:253D:CFBD:C63F:D432 (talk) 18:31, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not all gay people are dykes. We need more context.

The original wording may be appropriate. Wikipedia is not censored. Mjroots (talk) 08:01, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to request a section be edited for poor wording.

Under variants on this page,; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_208_Caravan There is the statement ". While the 192 hp (143 kW) more powerful PT6A-140 gives a 11-knot (20 km/h) higher cruise speed". It appears, when I read it, that this plane model has a 192hp engine. The engines are much higher power than that, I believe they meant it was 192hp above the "norm".

How can I contact the person who wrote the article, and ask they consider rephrasing it.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rem1061 (talkcontribs) 19:54, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cessna 208 Caravan isn't protected in any way, so you could edit the article yourself as long as the changes were reliably sourced. Alternatively, you could put in an edit request at Talk:Cessna 208 Caravan.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:26, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Rem1061 you can go to the "View history" tab of the article and then "Find addition/removal" and search for 192. It was added here by User:Marc Lacoste, who is still active. Linking their user name and signing the post should notify them. TSventon (talk) 20:32, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rem1061: I think the wording is clear. The PT6A-140 is "192hp more powerful", not that it has 192hp. 108.52.196.8 (talk) 21:28, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rem1061 In my opinion, this phrase is ambiguous. The parenthetical expression in the middle does break it up in the original prose. It should either be a "192hp-more-powerful" engine, or else a "192hp, more powerful" engine (which means it's 192hp total, which is more powerful than the original engine). But it's hard to include the 143 kW phrase in there.
How about "the PT6A-140, which is 192hp (143kW) more powerful than the standard engine, gives a 11-knot (20 km/h) higher cruise speed..."? 73.127.147.187 (talk) 04:20, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello there! This part is in the Cessna 208 Caravan#Variants section, describing the larger 208B Grand Caravan variant, stating with a more powerful 867 hp (647 kW) Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-140 [...] While the 192 hp (143 kW) more powerful PT6A-140 gives a 11-knot (20 km/h) higher cruise speed. I think it's pretty clear the PT6A-140 produces 867hp, not 192hp. This is 192hp more than the 675hp of the regular PT6A-114 variant. Reading the whole paragraph avoids any ambiguity. It may be improved, but it's not easy as it's a list of technical details. Note this was the result of a long discussion, as I proposed to show those details in a table, while other seasoned aviation editors preferred to show it in prose.--Marc Lacoste (talk) 05:58, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are right that reading the whole paragraph helps make it clear. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:11, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a draft that's failed article submission

I noticed there isn't an article in main for the 3rd Fowl Twins book 'The Fowl Twins Get What They Deserve', but found a draft that someone else tried to submit as an article. It failed and it's just sitting there.

So I'm wondering since it's been tagged as a failed submission, is there a special process for attempting to improve it if I chose to, or letting other editors know about it? Or can I just go ahead like it's a regular article?

It kind of feels like I'm jumping on someone else's work. KaraLG84 (talk) 21:34, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Artemis Fowl Twins: Get What They Deserve was only declined not rejected, so anyone is free to edit it and re-submit, it only has one sentence in any case. Theroadislong (talk) 21:40, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Two questions about article grading

1. As I prepare to send an article to WP:GAN, is it acceptable to contact an editor (individually at their talk page) for their opinion of the article? If it is acceptable, which type of editors should I pick? If no, is there any alternatives to WP:Peer review that I can use?
2. Is there a template that centralises requests for re-grading an article?

Thank you and please ping on reply. NotReallySoroka (talk) 05:11, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NotReallySoroka, you can probably ask somebody, but you have to make sure that you aren't burdening them. Why don't you want to use peer review?

Have you tried https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q27049393 MilborneOne (talk) 08:37, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Mann Mann, that's d:Q27049393 for short. (So she has an entry. But if she hadn't, this would probably be because no human or bot had yet got around to creating one.) -- Hoary (talk) 08:41, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MilborneOne and Hoary: Her name is wrong there and that was the reason why I didn't find the entry. I will correct her data. Thanks for the help. --Mann Mann (talk) 08:44, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bit surprising, Mann Mann. I'd never heard of her. I went to Wikidata, searched there for "Toni Storm", and was shown entry d:Q27049393. This ESPN story is evidence that her real-life name is Toni Rossall: do cite this when you revise the Wikidata entry. -- Hoary (talk) 09:56, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Because she is a professional wrestler, and professional wrestling has become a niche entertainment. Seems only wrestling fans and members of WikiProject Professional Wrestling visit, read, and edit PW articles. Cheers! --Mann Mann (talk) 10:08, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Proper Format to Add Citations in the Inbox

Hey y'all, I tried adding these three citations to the Persian language page in the infobox:

https://plc.sas.upenn.edu/persian

https://www.langcen.cam.ac.uk/resources/langp/persian.html

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/what-countries-speak-farsi

Of course, I broke the page by accident. You can check out the format I used on the Persian language page which incidently broke it. Anyone know how I can add these to the "Native to" section in the infobox without completely ruining it?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Windafarna (talkcontribs) 18:15, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Windafarna. You managed to get the wrong way round between your first and second addition. So instead of closing the first ref and starting a new one, you essentially put an empty ref in the middle of the-ref-that-contained-your-first-two-urls.
However, please do not use bare URLs for references: see WP:REFB for how to format them properly. ColinFine (talk) 20:38, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Deaths

Once again the English language Wikipedia has a bunch of who's that's on the RD section and has skipped NBA Great Bob Lanier's passing. A person noted for his humanitarian work. I request that his name be added ASAP so that the world may shed a tear or two along with his family. Please see to it that this is done quickly. RJCamp21. thank you

RJCamp21 Please sign your posts with four tildes(~~~~). Recent Deaths can only post what is nominated. Please make a nomination at WP:ITNC. 331dot (talk) 18:26, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rjcamp21: He was nominated and posted yesterday [1] at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates#(Posted) RD: Bob Lanier. He was removed after 27 hours to give main page time for other recent deaths.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 18:58, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rjcamp21, your tone is a little "brusque". The Help Desk is for editors to get help editing WP, although we do see a lot of requests (and demands) for the experienced editors here to do something, and often to do something right now. It looks like your request was handled. WP is not meant to be a breaking news source -- the world can mourn his passing even before the info is added here. Thanks. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:24, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, not to pile on, but please understand that WP does not have anyone assigning areas to work on, or to make sure that certain things are not missed. All of the editors are volunteers, and each editor chooses what to work on. Maybe none of the editors who were active in the one or two days between his passing, and your request, were interested in basketball or noticed that he had passed. Perhaps they had other things they wanted to work on. Anyway, it's done now. Cheers. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:32, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RJCamp21- The help desk is not a forum for you to complain about the main page. Whether you consider that guy notable or not, you can't just make people do it here. This is not the place to nominate someone. This is, however, the place where editors get help with editing. As PrimeHunter said, he was already there.
Asparagusus (interaction) 13:35, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Bob Lanier is literally listed on the recent deaths right now (albeit he'll be the next one to roll off when someone else is added). They're ordered by date of posting (which is when the article is nominated at WP:ITNC and then good enough to be posted on front page), not by date of death or any sort of perceived importance. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:40, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it does look like Lanier was taken off and then re-added later on for some reason. Which is why it wasn't there at time of nomination, but is there now. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:46, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do people have access to recent articles when they are not on the web?

For example, here on Pierre Poilievre#40th Parliament it says in the second paragraph, "Poilievre became referred to as the Conservative Party's "attack dog"" with three citations, none of them linked. I can't even find them on the web so how do people cite them? Ak-eater06 (talk) 20:52, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The citations are to articles published in 2009-2011, they aren't 'recent'. As for how they were accessed, libraries often keep copies of publications. Wikipedia has no requirement that sources have to be accessible online. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:06, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A quick search of the article title and publication name turned up links to 2 of the 3, so I've added those to the citations just to make everyone's life easier. But as was mentioned, WP:OFFLINE sources are acceptable. VernoWhitney (talk) 21:10, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to attribute joint authorship between an agency and a person?

Let's say that a "John Doe" article belongs in categories "2022 births", "People from Foo", "Everymen", "Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence winners", "War of the Ring veterans", etc. In which order do categories go in the bottom of the article? Order of significance? Alphabetic order? First come, first served? Anything goes? Cambalachero (talk) 12:58, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at Help:Category and I don't think there's any specific order.

MOS:CATORDER says they can be any order, though some people like to re-order them to make them alphabetical, which isn't required. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:30, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The file is currently here but was nominated for deletion because it is the same as this image on Discogs. So it isn't suitable for Commons as it must be freely licensed.
