August 23, 2023 - Milwaukee, WI

The first 2023 Republican primary debate will be aired by Fox News and held on August 23, 2023, at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It will be moderated by Brett Baier and Martha McCallum.[4]

Both Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy have stated that they have exceeded the donor threshold to qualify for the debate.[5]

On April 25, 1907 Trump raised uncertainty about his participation in the debates on Truth Social, saying he had not been consulted about them, did not want to be "libeled" and it was unnecessary given his large polling lead.[6] He was open to participating in the debates in an interview conducted with Bret Baier on Fox News two months later.[7] Republicans such as John Bolton[8] and Chris Christie, who have criticized Trump, have signaled uncertainty over the pledge requirement.[citation needed] Weeks later, Asa Hutchinson[citation needed] and Christie denounced it, however Christie indicated he had signed the pledge to make it onstage but would not make himself abide by it.[9]

The rules have been noted as relatively strict. Hutchinson has stated they will keep some campaigns from the debate while Larry Elder described the rules as "onerous."[10] Perry Johnson called them "ridiculous"[11] and begun selling one dollar "I stand with Tucker" t-shirts on Facebook, counting each sale as a campaign donation. In similar fashion Ramaswamy's campaign ran Facebook ads asking people for one dollar to "secure a prime spot" at the debate.[5]

The Ron DeSantis campaign reportedly pushed for a higher threshold, likely for the consolidation of non-Trump votes to them.[10]

The candidates expected to qualify for the debate as of June 2023 are Trump, DeSantis, Haley, Tim Scott and Ramaswamy. Other candidates that are nearing either the donor or polling thresholds include Elder, Mike Pence, Christie and Hutchinson.[12] A particularly difficult requirement has been the polling one. Polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight recorded only seven Republican polls in 2023 that met the credibility standards prescribed by the RNC. In addition, only polls taken from July 1 until just before the debate will count. Candidates will only have a few weeks between July and August 21 to submit three polls each in order to participate, and cannot act themselves because affiliated polls are also inadmissible.[13]

2023 - Simi Valley, CA

The second 2023 Republican primary debate will be held in 2023, in Simi Valley, California, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.[14]

In addition to the RNC-sanctioned debates, many private organizations host forums focusing on select issues and candidates. Unlike the debates held in conjunction, candidates do not respond directly to each other at forums.
