Ramsey County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 511,035. Its county seat is St. Paul6, which is also Minnesota's state capital. The county is named for Alexander Ramsey, the first governor of the Minnesota Territory.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 441 km² (170 mi²). 403 km² (156 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.44% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 511,035 people, 201,236 households, and 119,936 families residing in the county. The population density is 1,267/km² (3,281/mi²). There are 206,448 housing units at an average density of 512/km² (1,325/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.37% White, 7.61% Black or African American, 0.83% Native American, 8.77% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 2.90% from two or more races. 5.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 201,236 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.00% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.40% are non-families. 32.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.16.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $45,722, and the median income for a family is $57,747. Males have a median income of $39,806 versus $30,814 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,536. 10.60% of the population and 7.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.70% of those under the age of 18 and 6.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
