Fixing Copyright Status

An image that I loaded into Wikipedia (Marked Bumble bees.jpg) claims to be missing Copyright status and I don't know how fix that before it gets removed. Can you help me? Jennyjandt (talk) 17:59, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My reply here.

I've uploaded a new version of the file (same image) and I think I included copyright status, but nothing seems to change on the image page. Did I forget something? Jennyjandt (talk) 15:07, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Yes, I would like to release the photo into the public domain. However, I don't know where to add GFDL on the image. Thanks. Jennyjandt (talk) 13:33, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to warn JeanLatore for the edits he made to the RFA in question. This just seems wrong. America69 (talk) 03:04, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm, will leave this one up to a more tenured admin. –xenocidic (talk) 03:05, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see you saw his RFA. Does that add to what I put above? —Preceding unsigned comment added by America69 (talkcontribs) 23:24, July 5, 2008
It's obvious trolling, his last RFA snowed just over a week ago. but again, I'll let a more experienced admin handle it. –xenocidic (talk) 03:26, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One last thing. Could you please look at the comments he left on my page. They were quite uncivil. Thanks. Please respond on my page. America69 (talk) 03:36, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Forget about it. This has been an interseting night. Let's drop it since it's over. Sorry to both you so much this evening. America69 (talk) 03:49, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No bother. –xenocidic (talk) 03:53, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

JeanLatore

I've put him on a final warning. The RFA trolling and AfD trolling could be misplaced humor, but this is outright harassment. – ırıdescent 14:17, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I just noticed that. I would endorse a block if this keeps up. No need to let trolls run loose, even if they do improve an article once in a while. –xenocidic (talk) 14:19, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Curious About Conduct

Regardless of the CU's turnout for User:JeanLatore, was it appropriate of me to avoid conflict and not bring up the issue until now after he's been indefblocked? Or should I have done a report right away when I was suspicious? I suspected he wanted to continue with a grudge against me so I didn't do so, thinking that (if I'm correct) doing so would've caused a bigger disruption rather than simply letting things run their course. -WarthogDemon 19:13, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still not too familiar with CU and when it is or is not appropriate to request one. Perhaps one of my more experienced talk page stalkers can chime in? –xenocidic (talk) 19:19, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Xenocidic! I have a request for U8 here but I'd appreciate it if you read it too and (hopefully) carried it out! I really value feedback.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 04:35, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see Us8 already completed this for you, but I wouldn't worry about it so much. A good gauge of whether your huggling is appropriate is how many users are coming to your talk page to complain about your reverts. The closer to none, the better. =) –xenocidic (talk) 14:50, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes

Xenocidic. Thanks again for the help. Quick question for ya. What are the numbers shown next to posts in 'recent changes'? i.e. (-1), (+864), etc. They are in red or green. I imagine they are some type of edit rating system, however if they are, how is the decision made? I added an important citation to Stewie Griffin and got a (-1). disappointed. -washburnmav (talk) 18:33, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My reply here.
No, that is the size change in bytes done by the edit. + means content was added, - means content was removed. Huge deletions appear in bold red as it may be an indication of vandalism (at least if it is not properly explained in the edit comment). --PaterMcFly (talk) 18:45, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(Re [3]) Hi

I suppose that's it now. While I was away, User:69.86.161.159, obviously the "opponent" of User:Truthful data (see history of article), reverted to "his" very biased version. While I was writting a warning to that user and one on the talk page, truthful data reverted back to his (in the opposite direction biased) version again. Either full protect the article (probably in my version, since, if I'm not completelly wrong, that's the least biased - although in general I would not ask a protection on a specific version, but this seems to be a special case) or block both parties for an extended period of time. --PaterMcFly (talk) 18:43, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My reply here.

(Re [4] [null edit]) The block was intentional. I will re-consider if needed. Bearian (talk) 20:22, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

k, I just wanted to be sure. The latest article creation attempts seemed somewhat good-faithy which is why I didn't block myself. –xenocidic (talk) 20:23, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to Special:PrefixIndex some thing without getting the sub pages of the subpages.

You PrefixIndex Wikipedia
You get Wikipedia/A and Wikipedia/A/B
But you only want Wikipedia/A.

South Bend Watch Company...WikiPedia History & Reference (Heartland)

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Nancy Licini (nee Shelton) and this serves as notification that the WikiPedia South Bend Watch Company History and the reference page under Heartland is in accurate. I am not an editor and really do not have the time to figure out how to undo the deletions of my contributed revisions, or should I say corrections. Additionally, I do not understand the format for documenting your articles and the signing of my posts by typing four (4) tildes.

So, I am asking you to undo this and make the changes for me. Here are the facts:

Walter Cross Shelton, Sr. 08/12/1881-08/15/1975 (W.C. Shelton, Sr.) was my paternal grandfather and the man associated with the South Bend Watch Company. Mercel Joseph Shelton (M.J. Shelton) was his son (my uncle) and graduated from Purdue University. He became a Civil Engineer. My father, Walter Cordier Shelton, Jr. 11/22/1914-04/01/1998 (W.C. Shelton, Jr.) became an Aeronautical Engineer. Neither of Walter C. Shelton, Sr. sons were associated with the South Bend Watch Company. Again, it was W.C. Shelton, Sr. who was the jeweler and watchmaker in our family.

This is my family genealogy and I am asking you to kindly make the appropriate aforementioned corrections. As a reference regarding validity I am refering you to the South Bend Tribune (Obituary Section) of my father Walter C. Shelton, Jr. dated 04/04/1998. It does state "His father, Walter, Sr. was the manager of the South Bend Watch."

If you should have further questions, please feel free to contact me at the following. Thank you kindly for your prompt and courteous attention.

South Bend Watch Company...Reference Pg (Heartland)

Thank you kindly for your assistance regarding the appropriate and accurate corrections involving the South Bend Watch Company and my grandfather Walter C. Shelton, Sr. as the watchmaker in our family. I do need further assistance. I have tried on several occasions to make contact and to no avail.

The additional Reference Pg is intitled Heartland under the History of the South Bend Watch Company in WikiPedia. This data too is inaccurate and states M.J. Shelton. It needs to read Walter C. Shelton, Sr. (W.C. Shelton, Sr.). Please assist in seeing to it that this article is corrected, edited with the aforementioned corrections of W.C. Shelton, Sr. associated with the South Bend Watch Company. Again, I thank you for your time and expertise. Please note that I have given to you and posted confidential contacts. Please feel free to delete my requests and contact data following these corrections.

WikiPedia South Bend Watch Company Reference (Heartland) needs revision, please

Thank you kindly for your assistance and expertise. I appreciate your time and energy. As I mentioned, I am not an expert in being able to navigate these pages.

I have one last request: I am unable to edit the reference page entitled Heartland re: the WikiPedia Reference Section involving the South Bend Watch Company.

It is my hope that you will be able to make the appropriate corrections to the Reference data entitled Heartland. Again, M.J. Shelton is listed as the man associated with the South Bend Watch Company. That statement is inaccurate. The credit and correction is Walter Cross Shelton, Sr. (W.C. Shelton, Sr.) who was associated with the South Bend Watch Company. He was the watchmaker and jeweler in our family. Verification: South Bend Tribune 04/04/1998 Obituary Section entitled Walter C. Shelton, Jr. It states his father Walter C. Shelton, Sr. was the man associated with the South Bend Watch Company.

My reply here.

I have contacted so many, and this reference page well, I cannot edit. The ringmaster? I haven't the faintest idea how to contact him/her, believe me I've tried. The last time I believe this reference pg was edited was 1999. If you could locate a resource for contact to accomplish my goal re these corrections, I would appreciate it. Resources I've tried seem to be dead. Sorry about this, but I cannot see this ending until the corrections are made involving W.C. Shelton, Sr. and the South Bend Watch Company.

Help

Can you take a look at several revisions starting here and give me your opinion? This will take a few minutes of digging, but I see several blocks that look a little too trigger happy to me. I mean, how can an admin block a an account after it makes only 3 edits in 2 minutes, with 1 warning? Am I off base?  Frank  |  talk  15:05, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I gather you're talking about SHANKSTERONER, the vandalism is completely inappropriate, and I seriously doubt we could reform this user with the standard 4 warning/temporary block cycle. Vandalism-only accounts of this nature can be blocked on sight (even without warning, if it's quite severe). –xenocidic (talk) 15:08, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Special:Contributions/Porzechowski is a block evading spam/advertising-only account of Special:Contributions/90.152.47.58. –xenocidic (talk) 15:11, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ummm, how do we find that out without a checkuser request?  Frank  |  talk  15:13, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Quack." Tan | 39 15:14, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec - damn you tan) Per WP:DUCK - exact same vandalism, immediately after the block. There is one that I probably wouldn't have performed which was Special:Contributions/82.117.194.34, contributions appear to be in good faith, though the blocking admin may know more about the subject matter. –xenocidic (talk) 15:16, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Filll's RFA questions

Hi! As you said on my talk page you were meaning to address the Filll thing (presumably his questions and lack of voting), I thought I ought to draw your attention to something on his User talk page. There are 4 boxes, and in the fourth one down, he states that he will not be voting in RFAs, RFBs and so on. His reasoning is sound - not wanting to be attacked for his votes. I think most people would get rather narked about that. I would guess that he continues including the questions in RFAs so that people can assess the candidancy's reasoning. Still, answering them wasn't a complete waste of time; I did get weburiedoursecretsinthegarden's vote, even if he didn't read the answer! Take care, StephenBuxton (talk) 16:28, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think he wrote that around my RFA and those "other" contentious RFAs, and stopped adding his questions. He's since started adding them again. Anyhow, I am going to wait for a few more RFAs with his questions (that were answered) close to see if he chimes in on any of them, and then leave him a message. –xenocidic (talk) 16:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I might be able to help you out there. Before I saw his comment on his user page, I was looking at his contributions to see if he was about and had the opportunity to read my answers. I saw him add to this page, so I had a look; really to see if my answers were any different to his. What I found was a list of people who had responded to them, with myself being the latest addition. StephenBuxton (talk) 17:08, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, my thing is, if he's going to ask those questions - which can takes upwards of an hour or two (or more) to answer if they really put thought into them - he should weigh in on the RFA, be it support, neutral, or oppose. There was one RFA already closed he didn't vote on (who answered both his questions, and then there's yours. Once your RFA closes, I'll drop by his talk page to encourage him to do so (if he doesn't end up weighing in) or consider not asking the questions anymore. –xenocidic (talk) 17:11, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:HAU, Status, and you!

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 23:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I'm not actually on WP:HAU anymore...could I perhaps be removed from your bot's spamlist? GlassCobra 15:30, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, just remove your entry from Wikipedia:Highly Active Users/North America =) –xenocidic (talk) 15:31, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, looks like there's actually been a bit of confusion; I actually removed myself on May 11; however, I got re-added by Useight three days later in one of the many revamps that HAU has undergone. I'll go and take myself off again. GlassCobra 20:37, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That explains it=) Anyhow there's where I pulled the spamlist from; in either case, I doubt there will be any more spams from HAU, unless there's another public service announcement that needs made. –xenocidic (talk) 20:38, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Still, I don't feel that I should be classified as highly active at the moment. I am curious, though, as to how you guys do your status updates. Wasn't StatusBot shut down? Or is it just updated manually? GlassCobra 20:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Somewhat manually but assisted with either WP:QUI or scripts similar to User:Xenocidic/statusChanger2.js. –xenocidic (talk) 20:43, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about to check his contribution history to have a look at some of the articles he's damaged and the extent of the required cleanup job. Sarcasticidealist (talk) 01:47, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just to point out that since he was a sockpuppet of a banned (not blocked) user, you're quite within policy to revert every edit he ever made... – iridescent 02:07, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. Though they're likely not the "newest" edit any more and undo might not even work due to intermediate edits. –xenocidic (talk) 02:08, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HAU Status

Hi. I tried inserting my status into the HAU page but why isn't it working? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 01:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My reply here.
Hi. Ok, that was fast, but can I have my HAU status updated transcludedly every time I update my status box? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 01:53, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My reply here.
(edit conflict)Hi. Would it work if my javascript was edited so that instead of displaying
{{User:AstroHurricane001/StatusTemplate}}

everytime I click the buttons, it would display

{{subst:User:AstroHurricane001/StatusTemplate}}

instead so that it can display the one word, and if so how should my monobbok be edited? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 02:07, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Ok, but please tweak it so that it produces the intended result, and since I'm supposed to be offline could you leave a message on my talkpage so that tomorrow I remember to clear my cache? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 02:11, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Well, you got almost everything working, and I appreciate that. However, the one thing that isn't quite working is the status on HAU. It says:

'''<div style="background: transparent; float: right; position: relative; top: -30px; padding: 5px"> <span style="color: green;">[[Image:Ledgreen.png|20px]] Online</span> </div>'''

, which says I'm online but breaks the formatting, is something still not working, or should I install QUI, but I use Internet Explorer, does it work? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 13:50, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Yes, it works now, thank you!!

Hi. Yes, I have cleared my cache. Also, I don't blame you for being tired, we both have the same time zone (EDT) and I had to go to sleep. Anyway, thanks for the help, and I'll go check my watchlist now. Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 14:29, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you object to the very fact that it is included in the article, I think we can simply converge upon a version that we will agree upon. Fireice (talk) 02:03, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Page Syncexpert

Hi Xenocidic,

Can you please send me a copy of the deleted page Syncexpert?

I am new to adding page on wikipedia and did not aware of the rules. Now I know.

With the returned copy I can change focus of the page to the proprietary data sync algorithm used in the software, instead of advertising the software.

By the way, I was indeed inspired by another wikipedia page on a competing product of SyncEXP. I just copied their wiki codes straightly and replaced with our names plus some adjustment on the wordings. Can I send you the wiki link of that product so you may comment on its long living in wiki?

Thanks for caring on this matter,

So I put QUI and twinkle in my monobook.js file and neither is showing up anymore even though I reset the cache. QUI showed up once, but Twinkle never did anything. -A very confuddled Washburnmav (talk) 18:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Are you using Firefox now? Twinkle isn't compatible with IE. You will find Twinkle's functionality when you click on a "diff", you will see options to "[rollback (AGF)] || [rollback] || [rollback (VANDAL)]". Rollback "AGF" is when you are reverting good faith edits, rollback "vandal" is for clear and obvious vandalism, and "rollback" is for anywhere in between. You should put a reason in the box explaining the revert if it's not plain vandalism. Click this, it is an example of a diff. Feel free to use Twinkle to roll it back. Qui is that little dot in the top right of your screen. –xenocidic (talk) 18:39, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am using firefox. Neither the twinkle options under "diff" nor the green dot is appearing. Washburnmav (talk) 18:43, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You pressed Ctrl-Shift-R to reset the cache? This is what to click for the test diff. What version of FF? –xenocidic (talk) 18:45, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did rese the cache multiple times. I'm using firefox 3.0. There are no twinkle options to speak of when I check that difference. Washburnmav (talk) 18:47, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hrm, I just upgraded to FF3 and it's working for me. Perhaps consider installing the modules manually? See Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Twinkle/doc#Installing individual Twinkle modules. Try starting with just the first three modules. –xenocidic (talk) 19:04, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just to confirm, Image:TW-rback.gif is what it will look like should it work. –xenocidic (talk) 19:09, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Tried the manual install, still having nothing working. Definitely do not see the twinkle tools. Argh don't spend too much time on this I'll figure it out. Washburnmav (talk) 19:20, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Quite strange. You've got multiple morebits in there, only need it once, at the top. Try taking off Qui and see if that fixes Twinkle. Then close the browser, re-open, press Ctrl-Shift-R and see if you can see the rollback buttons. –xenocidic (talk) 19:21, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, just to say that although you removed my report on the vandalism report page, the vandalism is still there, despite me refreshing it / clearing cache, does this mean the report should be re-filed? because I can't edit the vandalised pages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Revelation13 (talkcontribs) 18:23, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New C&C template dispute

Seems there is a new template dispute going on. Since you're a proponent of the template's current revision, I thought you might want to have your say.

The discussion is being held here. Kalamrir (talk) 22:02, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Block IP?

Sorry I don't know the proper avenues for block request but this ip User talk:206.213.40.100 has not stopped vandalizing despite the proper warning protocols. How do I request blocks properly in the future? Thanks Washburnmav (talk) 22:21, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If someone continues disruptive edits even after final warning, file a report at WP:AIV - Adolphus79 (talk) 22:24, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Adolphus is correct here, WP:AIV is a good way to get many administrator eyes on one particular vandal. For this particular IP however, he hasn't edited in over half an hour and as far as IPs go that's what we would call "stale". They need to be active at the time ( I usually say within the last 20 minutes, but it's up to each admin's personal judgment ). Did you get Twinkle sorted yet? The "ARV" system is a really easy way to report vandals to AIV. –xenocidic (talk) 22:25, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was just informed by Lightmouse that my application is futile, since the bot won't run on my Macintosh computer. I've never used the Windows-emulation function (I've heard it exists, but that it's not ideal). Sounds like a lot of fusss. O.o

500-1000 edits are requested for a tool is "no more momentous than installing Twinkle"? Is this the norm at RfR? (And sorry if I come off a bit abrupt.) —Giggy 11:21, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The norm (AFAIK) is that it's not given to brand new accounts with no history of vandal fighting... The suggested edit count was to ensure he didnt go revert 5 vandalisms and re-apply. (and abrupt reply for an abrupt question! ;>) –xenocidic (talk) 12:12, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Shrug. I'd be giving it to anyone who could find the page; removal is trivially easy. But that's just me. —Giggy 03:29, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
shrug, I'd prefer not to let loose dozens of revert-happy huggle warriors who don't know what they're doing and might use it to revert good faith edits. and having a rollback removal is far more damaging to someone's reputation than having an RFR denial. –xenocidic (talk) 11:28, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need your help again, this time on this composer here, where I've stumbled into another long-going edit-war. After getting involved into a revert war with several Users, IP's and possibly some sock-puppets I've listed the article at WP:RFPP for full-protection. The request took some time to be handled, and in the meantime I've checked the talk page (where reverting and edit-warring is seemingly also rather the way to go...) I decided that I should actually nominate the article for deletion as HOAX.

Copied from article talk page (from myself): On my request, this article has been protected due to heavy edit-warring. (Of course in the wrong version, but I don't care). But this discussions here and some googling (Zero hits for "Nacht Der Tanz" outside WP, Opus 114 is from Brahms, opus 711 doesn't exist...), the fact that Nacht Der Tanz isn't proper german (should say "Nacht des Tanzes" or "Der Tanz der Nacht" or similar) and the fact that the subject probably doesn't even know german makes me think that the accusation of this being a hoax might be true. Also, there are way to many sock-puppets involved in these discussions.

Unfortunatelly, the article has now been protected in the meantime. Can you open up an Rfd debate for me please? --PaterMcFly (talk) 14:17, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like someone beat you to it. It would be best if you made your arguments at the existing AFD. –xenocidic (talk) 14:24, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, just saw it. The afd wasn't linked from the page (due to the lock) and he also forgot to list it in todays deletion log, therefore, I didn't find it. Thanks anyway. --PaterMcFly (talk) 14:33, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

<--If the things on the talkpage are true (hoax, Zionist/anti-Palestinian claims), that AFD/article are both gonna get really messy with socks/ANI/DRV...just a fair warning to avoid it if you don't want to get too ridiculously involved. That article has been here over 3 years, I believe it was or is a GA. My money's on ANI first...Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 14:40, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you're talking to me, "my work here is done" ! LOL. –xenocidic (talk) 14:41, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Uh, oh... Why do I always stumble into these? O-o I'm not yet so very used to all the english wp terms you're referring to now (my "home" is the german WP). ANI is the Administrator Noticeboard- Ok can happen, but what are DRV and GA? WP:GA does certainly not apply on this one... (well, maybe because it's a good hoax?) --PaterMcFly (talk) 14:56, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
DRV is "deletion review" (keeper thinks the socks will appeal the deletion if successful). he also thinks this araticle was/or used to be a good article. –xenocidic (talk) 15:04, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I know this procedure: Afd Request->Article deleted->Further Discussion on deleting admin's talk page->Deletion review. If that still fails one can recreate a C&P-Version of the article->Speedy->Deletion review->Sockpuppetry etc... Not so very funny for the admins involved ;-) --PaterMcFly (talk) 20:14, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Thanks

Hi there,

Approving your ACC request wasn't a problem :). Also, no problem regarding those comments, I was starting to learn about it, and found out that you're not supposed to vote like you said, but leave comments in favour/opposition, to state a reason why. Also, I've had worse comments from people, though they were a little puzzled by calling me an administrator! :D

Have a great day,

The Helpful One (Review) 14:24, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can get admin if you want, as you are an admin here. There are no "set in stone rules" for becoming an admin on the ACC tool - but I would probably get used to the user part of the interface for a while before requesting for admin. When you want admin, just ask me, or any of the other admins on the ACC tool, or join #wikipedia-en-accounts on irc.freenode.net (if you use IRC). Rollback

What are you feelings about me being eligible for rollback? I think my contribs show a good understanding of what vandalism is and a strong commitment to reverting it. Washburnmav (talk) 19:00, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right, I saw your request at RFR... It's probably still a little early, you've less than 500 edits. Most admins look for at least a week or two of solid vandal fighting; that being said, it's going to be tough if you can't sort out your Twinkle issue because you'll have to do manual undo vandal fighting. Do you have javascript disable or something? Try posting for help at WT:TW. –xenocidic (talk) 19:04, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template substitution

What exactly do you do to get AWB to substitute the templates? I can't figure it out. Thanks for the help, « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie 00:09, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You just enable find & replace and paste the templates you want substituted into the Template substitution box each on a new line. –xenocidic (talk) 00:11, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I got that. Next? « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie 00:27, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Then you just build the list, start it, and it should work... It doesn't automatically recognize a template's redirects, or if they person typed Template: or not. (Most people don't so, I just put it without the "Template:". –xenocidic (talk) 00:29, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • What I don't understand is that the AWB page says "This page contains templates that AWB will automatically substitute on user talk pages.". But having to paste all those templates in the box and correct for such things as Template: or no template and the redirects doesn't seem very automatic to me. Maybe I'm doing things the hard way, so I'm going to ask Reedy to chime in here. –xenocidic (talk) 00:34, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK. How exactly do you "build the list?" « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie 00:36, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"what transcludes page" and paste the templates into the field separated by p|pes. don't bother trying now though, addbot got most of them, and then xenobot got whatever stragglers were left over. you'll only find about 6 or 7 and those are in archives and such. –xenocidic (talk) 00:37, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. Its loads easier than that for the user talk ones. Cant remember off the top of my head, as i've only just got up. I'll get something to eat and then check the instructions, and post them here/on the user manual for you! Reedy 08:19, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Make a list of user talk pages, make sure general fixes are enabled, and on the first run through, it will load the templates to be subsituted, and take it from there. The Find and Replace Template Substitution is just for other ones you might want to do (but you dont need this). Hope this helps! Reedy 09:04, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
wow, so I was definitely doing it the hard way. thanks for clearing that up. –xenocidic (talk) 11:07, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, no worries. Just needs adding to the manual (need to remember to do it) Reedy 14:15, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can try and fix that up. Would it be possible to add what was substed to the edit summary the way other find&replaces do? –xenocidic (talk) 14:16, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also could you add a "skip if no template substituted" option to "general fixes skip options"? That would be great. –xenocidic (talk) 14:46, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing the manual. Lets see about the other stuff... Edit summary and skip if no templates subst'd... Both should be possible, will have a look when i come back Reedy 18:11, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I'll try and help with the manual wherever I can. –xenocidic (talk) 18:21, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As a thought, seeing as that substiution is a general fix, it should skip on the skip if only general fixes changed, tbh. Reedy 18:41, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
True, but the reason I asked is because I want to be able to avoid making only minor (insignificant) general fixes if it doesn't find/recognize a template to subst. –xenocidic (talk) 18:45, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But the chances are, IHMO, you'd just be processing just user talk... It doesnt apply other general fixes to user talk pages. Reedy 19:34, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Thanks for clearing that up for me. –xenocidic (talk) 19:36, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you are right i think. We want to skip IF no user talk templates are subst'd, tying it in with the "skip if only general fixes changed", would mean, that if only they were subst'd it would change. rev 3079/rev 3080 - Added an option on the "Skip Options" form. lolz... I'll look into the edit summary bit later! Reedy 20:52, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, good point! See you had me all confused there =) I'll grab the new SVN and test it out. –xenocidic (talk) 21:13, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just uploading a snapshot of 3080 now. Seems to work fine Reedy 21:28, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Hopefully the task gets approved for my bot and I can put it into production. –xenocidic (talk) 21:29, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
=). Just thinking over it again.. Dya think its worth having the option to skip if only general fixes in aswell for user talk substing..? It would make sense (i think), as the user could turn it off, but if were doing other user page work... Reedy 21:59, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I follow? –xenocidic (talk) 22:02, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lol. I think im talking crap. I'll just leave it how it is now - the user can tell the program to skip if no templates have been substituted by the general fixes. Reedy 22:10, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll probably understand what you mean when I load 'er up and get some work done with the new option. Of course if a kindly BAG member were to review my bot's completed trial... <nudge> ;> –xenocidic (talk) 22:13, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

They messed up the system but I looked back and and assumed that if they didn't have anything productive to put towards it, why would they say it in the first place. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 02:07, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...is now fully WP:HAU compatible; it had some issues with it before, mainly self-centered ones because I didn't expect someone to go advertising it with a bot. :-P Anyway, I have made some changes to it to improve the usage and accessibility, and while I think it's fully tested, please let me know if you notice anyone having problems with it. Since your bot sent out the message, they may come to you first, regardless of who made the template. Good work on all that, to you and all others involved! Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:36, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! I've been sending people to it for some time now, but yea, first time it's been mentioned in a P.S.A. =) –xenocidic (talk) 11:10, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image question

Hi. Is it "done" to put a category on an empty image page, when the image is hosted at commons? This is out of my usual neighborhood, but a user placed a copyright tag on Image:Nixon greets POW McCain.jpg, so I've been investigating that. The image was deleted on Wikipedia in October of 2006. I thought it had been re-uploaded, but, no, it only looks like it's here because somebody has added a category. This may be fine and dandy, but as I do practically nothing with images (aside from what I've been learning at WP:CP, I don't know. The image is already in that category on commons, but for all I know the duplication may be necessary to make it list here. And if you don't know, I'll ask elsewhere, but I thought I'd give it a shot. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:46, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good question. I've no idea =) –xenocidic (talk) 12:31, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So I feared, but you never know who is going to be the keeper of what piece of esoteric knowledge. :D I'll look around to figure out who else to ask. (As an aside, it looks like Commons has more of a backlog on deletions than we do! That image has been listed since May 11. :O) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:43, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the subst

Thanks to substituting the template at User talk:Vetoeyou. I knew I was supposed to do that, I just forgot. Kingdon (talk) 16:14, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

no worries! –xenocidic (talk) 16:39, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article Deletion

A few weeks back, Orangemike deleted Plymouth Rock Studios on the account that it was unnotable. I disagreed with him and asked him to take a second look at his decision and he never responded. I think that it is notable because of the fact that it is the only company building a movie and television studio east of the Mississippi. It also exists today and is known locally. Basically I want to revive the article with the wording on it so I don't have to make a whole new one. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 18:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Userfied to User:Ktr101/Plymouth Rock Studios. If you can make it meet inclusion criteria, the previous article should probably be restored before you paste the "new version" due to multiple GFDL-significant contributors. –xenocidic (talk) 18:26, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle/QUI

Twinkle & QUI just randomly decided to start working today. Can you explain more in depth the difference between the undo tool and the rollback options twinkle provides? ThanksWashburnmav (talk) 19:08, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback will allow you to roll back all the consecutive edits by a particular edit. So say they vandalized by making 6 different edits, you could roll all of them back. there's three different rollbacks, "AGF" should be used whenever the editor may have been trying in a good-faith way to improve the article but "fails" (twinkle prompts for an edit summary), rollback "vandal" should only be used for blatant vandalism and doesn't bother asking you for an extra edit summary. rollback (just rollback) should be used for anything in between and a descriptive edit summary should be used. glad they're working now, it will be much easier to justify giving you rollback with some solid vandal fighting under your belt. –xenocidic (talk) 19:14, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
