ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and his side kick Inspector Ali (Uday Chopra) are visited by ACP Sonali Bose (Bipasha Basu) who informs them about "Mr.A". They plan a trick to get "Mr.A" to stay in Mumbai and steal something else. During this ploy they get ex-con Sunehri(Aishwariya Rai) to convice "Mr.A" to make her his partner in crime. He unknowingly accepts after a game of basketball.

Plot
They fly over to ([Rio De Janiro]) to plan another heist. ACP Jai and Ali follow on another plane. They stay with Sonali's, who stayed behind, sister, Monali (Bipasha in a double role). After investigating for few days they find out much about him from Sunehri, who has fallen for him.
<!-- The plot must be written in BRITISH ENGLISH and usage of PAST TENSE and minimum words is a MUST -->
The film begins with Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) sky-dived from the sky and jumped into a train at Namib Desert. Mr. A stole a British crown by disguising himself as the queen in the train and escaped from a group of henchmen in the train. Then, the scene moves to newly-promoted officer Ali (Uday Chopra) and Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) battling a group of drug smugglers and won them. Sonali Bose (Bipasha Basu) was introduced into the film as a police officer who are newly assigned to accompany Ali and Jai in Mr. A's case. After the investigation, Jai revealed he knew Mr. A's plan, where Mr. A wishes to steal ancient collections in selected museums, whereby the museums formed an "A" on the map of the world. Concluding the difference between the heists, Jai found Mr. A next heist location; at Mumbai, India.

However Jai confused with two museums, which are promoting ancient collection (a necklace and a diamond) on the day. Meanwhile Jai and Sonali stayed at the museum that promotes the necklace, Ali stayed at the other museum. Mr. A appeared in the museum that promotes the diamond and stole the diamond using his gadgets. Mr. A escaped from the museum as an old folk after nearly catched by Jai and Ali. Trying to leave Mumbai, Mr. A, at an airport, saw a news about Mr. A's another heist, which confirmed by Mr. A himself, on television. The news, about Mr. A's heist to steal ancient warrior sword, was also watched by Ali, Sonali and Jai. Decided to conduct the heist, Mr. A stayed at Mumbai.
Aryan (Roshan) comes to find out about Sunehri and calls her in for a game of "roulette". She is frightened by this and they both admit their love for each other and engage in a kiss. After this they plan on this large scale heist including the first man made coins. They go to a party where Aryan and ACP Jai recognize each other and place a bet that Jai will catch him. Also Sunehri tells Jai she has decided to stop working for him.

The heist occurred during night, where the location was fully surrounded by polices. Mr. A is shown entering into the building and locating the sword. But, it reveals to be real Mr. A is sitting next to the sword and eating a hamburger while fake Mr. A shocked seeing real Mr. A presence there. Real Mr. A stopped the fake from taking the sword after revealing the sword is covered by laser which releases electrical current from all angles. After successfully stealing the sword together, real Mr. A brought fake Mr. A to a hiding place. Later, fake Mr. A revealed herself as a woman, named Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), saying Mr. A was her idol. Mr. A accepts Sunehri into his partnership after a game of basketball match.
After they possess the coins they try to escape but Jai and Ali follow them (all four are on motorcycles). Sunehri gets on another bike and rides off while Aryan is faced with Jai. After shots and riding they all come to an edge overlooking a watery death. Jai tells Aryan he can die or go quietly. At an instant Sunehri pulls out a gun and shoots Aryan down the cliff to his (fake) death. Jai tells Sunehri she's free and their work is done.

Then the film moves into Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Mr. A is conducting another heist to complete the last piece of "A". They were followed by Ali and Jai, leaving Sonali upon her own choice of staying there, where they were accompanied by Sonali's sister, Monali, at their place. Meanwhile, as the relationship started to strengthened, Mr. A reveled his real face and name, Aryan, to Sunehri. Later, Mr. A confirmed that Sunehri is working for Jai under Jai's orders after meeting them together at theatre and a parade. Aryan forced Sunehri to play a game of luck, where a bullet is inserted into the gun and being spin to not being known it's real position. Then, Aryan and Sunehri tried to shot each other (Sunehri was crying and denied to do it because he loved Aryan, but Aryan forced her). However, after six shooting, neither injured because Aryan inserted no bullet into the gun. Sunehri admitted he betrayed him and she loved Aryan. Later, they shared a kiss. Meanwhile, Ali developed affections towards Monali there.
After this scene Sunehri is seen in a beach-side bar with a cook on "strike". This cook so happens to be the infamous Aryan.

Jai is seen coming in and telling everyone to leave. He asks Aryan for his locker code and Aryan willing gives it up and says he's giving up stealing. Jai tell Aryan and Sunehri "Mr.A" died on a water side cliff and leaves. Ali calls Jai and tells him to abuse him in Hindi because he misses India. Jai tells Ali to pack to go back to Mumbai cause they have more work.

The next heist was success for Aryan and Sunehri, where Sunehri tell Jai about her denial not to work with him. Jai and Ali chased them using motorcycles, where Sunehri and Aryan went on separate on motorcycles also. After the chase, all of them arrived on the top of a waterfall, where Sunehri already caught by Ali. Sunehri, told she loved Aryan, and shot Aryan using Ali's gun. Aryan fall from the waterfall, meanwhile Ali and Jai released Sunehri from catching her. After a change in the timeline, to forward, the scene revealed Aryan is still alive and opened a restaurant (location not mentioned) with Sunehri and they both lived happily. Soon, after hearing a whistle, Aryan and Sunehri met with Jai at the restaurant. Jai stated he doesn't wants to catch them because for the world, they were dead.

The film is shot in sharp, primary colors, with sophisticated stunts, exotic location hopping and songs sung partly in English (and available on iTunes no less). Beginning in the Namibian desert with a bit of post-colonial mischief — the theft (literally) of the British crown — and making stops in Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, this cops and robbers tale embraces and devours every cliché, style and half-naked body it encounters. “Dhoom 2” may represent the newfangled Bollywood, but old-fashioned star power is what animates and elevates it above its occasional narrative flaws and longueurs."

Film Journal Internationals Ethan Alter said, "Dhoom 2 has all of the benefits of a big-budget Bollywood production: big-name stars, exotic locales, well-produced musical numbers and elaborate (by Bollywood standards, anyway) action sequences, including a daring train robbery and an extended motorcycle chase outside of Rio. In other words, it's exactly like all of the mainstream programmers that Hollywood churns out every summer, although those movies often suffer from a conspicuous shortage of singing and dancing on DayGlo sets. (Just think of how some peppy dance numbers would have enlivened generic blockbusters like Poseidon and X-Men: The Last Stand.) Dhoom 2 makes no lasting contributions to world cinema, but if two-and-a-half hours of disposable entertainment are all you're after, you could do far worse."

L.A. Weeklys David Chute stated the film, "A movie meal as satisfying as this one can make you feel that nothing else matters. Although that, the film received several negative reviews for fans of the film. Jaspreet Pandohar of BBC critically claimed the film, "By roping in acclaimed action director Alan Amin to take care of the thrills and spills, you'd expect Gadhvi to have spent time crafting out a sophisticated storyline instead of simply sending his cast on a cat-and-mouse chase around the globe. That the twist in Dhoom 2s tail is not explained is yet another shortcoming. It's only Roshan's charismatic performance as the criminal mastermind, and the sizzling chemistry he shares with Rai's sassy cohort, that rescues this adventure from becoming an elongated tourism commercial." Jaspreet Pandohar gave the film two out of five stars (2).

Response
Dhoom 2 received a mixed response from critics. While it was considered an entertaining action blockbuster, critics criticized it for being excessively action oriented without much character development. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai were praised by most critics who believed they allowed the movie to rise above its mediocrity. Several critics however questioned making the villain the main character of the second movie. The film, however, was praised for its action sequences and visual locales. Dhoom 2 currently has an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 5 reviews.

Dhoom 2: Back In Action (Hindi: धूम २, Hindustani pronunciation: [dʱm], also abbreviated and known as D:2, D2 and D2: Back In Action) is a 2006 Indian action buddy cop film directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra. It is the second film in the popular Dhoom series of Bollywood. Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra star in the film as Jai Dixit and Ali Akbar Fateh Khan as buddy cops. Jai and Ali face professional thief, Mr. A/Aryan (Hrithik Roshan), trying to mark an "A" on the world by stealing valuable ancient museum collections using modern high-technology gadgets, which Jai and Ali try to stop him.

Dhoom 2 and Dhoom actually caused youths in India to ride their motorcycles rashly, causing an increase in the number of road accidents in Mumbai, India.[3] The film was mainly shot in studio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Durban, South Africa, becoming the first Bollywood film to be filmed at Brazil.[4] Most praised the film's heavy action sequences.[5] Yash Raj Films promoted Dhoom 2, including tie-ins with Pepe Jeans and Coca-Cola.[1] It was promoted as "Coke Uthale, Dhoom Machale".[1] India's biggest game producer company, FXLabs, also confimed to develop a game based on the film, Dhoom 2.5.[6]

The film was generally well-received by both critics and the mass audience. It was a box office success and was elevated to a "blockbuster" rating on Box Office India after grossing over Rs 1.34 billion[2] (USD$34 million)[7] with a budget of Rs 350 million.[1] The film received 80% "fresh" certificate at Rotten Tomatoes,[8] so as the critics were positive.[9] The film became the widest Bollywood release till date; 650 prints across India.[10] The film became the highest grossing Indian film of the year (2006),[11] forth highest-grossing Bollywood films in India[12] and the eight highest-grossing bollywood films in overseas markets.[13]

Plot

Cast

The casts in the film was minimum only, focusing on the five main characters; Aryan/Mr.A, Sunehri, Jai Dixit, Ali Khan, Sonali and Monali Bose. All the casts were set to remain in the film, where John Abraham was excluded.[14] Replacing the villain of the film, Hrithik Roshan signed into the film.[14] Aishwarya Rai was eventually rumored to portray a role in the film, which excited the fans of the first film. The rumors inspired the filmmakers to include Aishwarya Rai into the film.[14]

Production

The Dhoom series begun since the release of Dhoom on 2006.[15] Dhoom released to be a commercial box office success and generally received positive reviews from audiences.[16][17] The film was considered to be a "blockbuster".[18] The film revitalized media interest in the franchise,[19] Yash Chopra announced a sequel for the film, titled Dhoom 2: Back In Action.[20][21][22] John Abraham, portrayer of Kabir Sharma, the villain of the predecessor, was in talk to appear in the film, but Yash Chopra denied to not repeat same stories in the film.[23] Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai was introduced into the film as the film's main villains.[23][24][25]Aishwarya Rai's character was summarized as a Catwoman, a female fictional comic book character.[26] Aishwarya Rai was told by Aditya Chopra to lose weight after gaining it for Template:Fy's Bride & Prejudice.[4] Aishwarya Rai stated, "All I can tell you is it would be nothing like anything you've seen me do before."[26][25] Yash Chopra stated about Aishwarya Rai;

But yes, the role does require Aishwarya to convey oodles of sensuality. She has asked for a couple of months to get into shape. We (at Yash Raj Films) are very clear about every character in every script and what's required of the actors. Before Dhoom, Esha Deol was specifically briefed about the look and the attitude she needed to cultivate. She readily agreed, and look at what Dhoom did to her career![25]

File:Sanjaygadhvi dhoom2.jpg
Director Sanjay Gadhvi denied the motorcycle heist in the film, so it doesn't relates to the first in the series.

Sanjay Gadhvi also denied the usage of motocycles in the film to keep his policies,[27] he stated the film is different than Dhoom.[27] Hrithik Roshan had to perform dangerous stunts for the film, he went on training for roller-blading, sand boarding and motorcycle stunts.[28] Dhoom 2 was filmed at particular foreign countries (outside India) and inside India. Filming was at Mumbai, India, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Namibia and Durban, South Africa.[29][30] The film become the first Bollywood film to be filmed at Brazil.[4] The film also used several major visual effects, so Sanjay Gadhvi filmed the scenes at his studio, Yash Raj Studios.[4]

Qatar Airways sponsored the air travels for the whole entire casts from India to South Africa.[31] Hrithik Roshan also lost 12 pounds of weight on Aditya Chopra's insistence so that he suits his character perfectly.[32] Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan's roles together was appropriate. The duel revitalized the duel to star in another film together, Jodhaa Akbar.[33] The film was filmed in eighteen months (one and a half year) at the cost of Rs 350 million.[1][34] During filming at Yash Raj Studios, the film suffered of a flood that eventually destroys the sets of the studio, caused the production took a longer time.[4] The fight and action sequences were completed with visual effects.[35] The scenes were sketched and shown to Allan Amin, he changes the camera angles, Sanjay Gadhvi made some changes again.[35] They had a proper shot list and those were sketched fair, inked and shared with Tata Elxsi who has done the visual effects for both Dhoom and pre visualization for Dhoom 2.[35]

Sanjay Gadhvi used all real made stunts (realism) in Dhoom and less stunts in Dhoom 2 compared to Dhoom.[35] The film uses green screen and computer-generated imagery techonology to suit the action sequences.[35]Hrithik Roshan's scene where he performed stunts on a train at Namib Desert used green screen, Sanjay Gadhvi filmed again the scene at the real desert.[35] The bullet effects were also generated by visual effects.[35] Abhishek Bachchan came out of a lake using a jet ski also used green screen, Abhishek stunt came out of 90 degrees, but Sanjay Gandhvi wants 60 degrees jump.[35] So, Sanjay Gandhvi shot the scenes on Super 35.[35] Hrithik's character was made to fight, but Sanjay Gandhvi wants him to be safe, which eventually increase the usage of green screen and computer-generated imagery.[35] Hrtihik's character was comapared to a combination of a thief and a genius scientist inventing gadgets, where his gadgets such as toy car in black, holographic image of the diamond and the mechanical arm are all computer-generated imagery.[35] The manhole that Hrithik stood on was also a result of computer-generated imagery.[35] Sanjay Gandhvi told about Dhoom 2 in an interview;

We've done animation and pre-visualization for all the action sequences in Dhoom 2 and that is very important in terms of planning, cost effectiveness and also it's a new way of preparing for shoot and the film specially which is as set on such a large canvas such as Dhoom 2. In Dhoom 1 we had all the action sequences broken down and written. In this movie we had very big action sequences so we had all the scenes storyboarded and they would be checked, double checked and triple checked by myself, Alan Amin and Adi and we would then rectify if needed and that would be our level of planning.[35]

Pritam Chakraborty, who composed music for the predecessor,[36] also composed the music for Dhoom 2.[37] Pritam's huge sucess was Dhoom's soundtrack and Dhoom 2's soundtrack.[38] The soundtrack released on October 19, 2006 with six songs written by Sameer (all six of them) and performed by various artists.[37] Pritam said about the score, "If Dhoom 1 and Dhoom 2 would have been released on the same day and people would have heard both of them, then Dhoom 2 would have been a much better album. But now D2 will get competition from D1, which has grown so much and has become so big. Although I am afraid about that competition, the quality of D2 is much better."[38]

Reception

Dhoom's teaser trailer was premiered along with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, during Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna released on August 11, Template:Fy.[39][40] The film had several tie-ins to promote the film. Yash Raj Films promoted the film with Pepe Jeans and Coca-Cola.[1] It was promoted as "Coke Uthale, Dhoom Machale".[1]The products were available across 70 Pepe stores in India, the products include garments, bandanas, metal accessories and caps.[41] The price range for T-shirts starts from Rs 599, shirts for Rs 899, jeans for Rs 1,999 and cargo pants for Rs 1,799.[41] For ladies, it is Rs 100 fewer than men’s articles.[41] Chetan Shah, country head, Pepe Jeans London, told:

This is the first time Pepe Jeans has tied up with any movie anywhere in the world for merchandising initiatives. We are Dhoom 2’s exclusive brand partners to merchandise, produce and sell apparels and accessories worn by actors like Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan.[41]

Dhoom 2 successfully grossed USD$979,000 at North America on it's opening weekend in 63 theaters, becoming the third largest opening weekend for Bollywood films at North America.[42] The film topped the American box office with a seventeenth ranking at box office.[42] The film's first day opening gross became the highest opening day gross at Dubai for Bollywood films.[43] In Mumbai, the film's distributors shared profit of Rs 9.42 crores (Rs 94.2 million).[43] Dhoom 2 ranked sixth at the United Kingdom's international film weekend gross with a gross (average per screen) of £8,151.[44][45] At Australia box office, the film opened at twelve ranking, collecting approximately $176,462.[45][46] Meanwhile, the film grossed approximately $51,453 at New Zealand on 5 screens with eighth ranking, later fluctuated the next following weeks.[45][47][48][49]

The film performed successfully at the India. It broke several records made by blockbuster films; opening day and opening weekend grosses mostly.[50] At Kerala, the film released in 22 centres in the states and grossed a sum of Rs 65 lakh (Rs 65,000,000) within a week.[50] In Kochi, it released at two theaters, from where the first week's gross was Rs 12 lakh.[50] From Crown and Kozhikode, the total gross was more than Rs 6 lakh.[50] At Andra Pradesh and elsewhere Telugu areas, the film ran over 100 days, confirming good reception.[51] At Chennai, the film set record of grossing Rs 3,45,462 on the first weekend, becoming success at Chennai.[50] The film opened to be second place on the following weeks at Chennai after the release of celebrated Veyil.[52] Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, the film received a good reception.[53] The film was a box office success and was elevated to a "blockbuster" rating on Box Office India after grossing over Rs 1.34 billion[2] (USD$34 million)[7] with a budget of Rs 350 million.[1] Box Office Mojo reports the film's gross, whereby USD$2,643,586 inside United States and USD$29,752,841 at foreign countries (including India).[7]

Despite great box office performances, the film received most positive reviews from fans. Review aggregation from Rotten Tomatoes was 80% "fresh" certificate based on five reviews.[8] People of Variety commented, "loaded with enough attitude, Bollywood starpower and buff bodies to stop a speeding train."[54] Rachel Saltz of The New York Times reviewed, "The pleasure principle is palpable in the giddy, slick “Dhoom 2,” a satisfying example of the new, thoroughly modern Bollywood. “Dhoom 2” may represent the newfangled Bollywood, but old-fashioned star power is what animates and elevates it above its occasional narrative flaws and longueurs."[55]

Film Journal International's Ethan Alter said, "Dhoom 2 has all of the benefits of a big-budget Bollywood production: big-name stars, exotic locales, well-produced musical numbers and elaborate (by Bollywood standards, anyway) action sequences, including a daring train robbery and an extended motorcycle chase outside of Rio. In other words, it's exactly like all of the mainstream programmers that Hollywood churns out every summer, although those movies often suffer from a conspicuous shortage of singing and dancing on DayGlo sets. (Just think of how some peppy dance numbers would have enlivened generic blockbusters like Poseidon and X-Men: The Last Stand.) Dhoom 2 makes no lasting contributions to world cinema, but if two-and-a-half hours of disposable entertainment are all you're after, you could do far worse."[56]

L.A. Weekly's David Chute stated the film, "A movie meal as satisfying as this one can make you feel that nothing else matters. "[8] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama reported, "On the whole, Dhoom 2 is a winner all the way. At the box-office, the film has already embarked on an earth-shattering initial and with multiple shows being conducted at multiplexes [16/18] with inflated ticket rates, the film will set new records in days to come. For Yash Raj, who've not only produced but also distributed the film, Dhoom 2 should emerge as one of the biggest hits of their career. Blockbuster!"[57] The review mostly praised the casting, performances, visual effects usage, direction, musical score and story, giving it three and a half stars over five ().[57]

That the twist in Dhoom 2's tail is not explained is yet another shortcoming. It's only Roshan's charismatic performance as the criminal mastermind, and the sizzling chemistry he shares with Rai's sassy cohort, that rescues this adventure from becoming an elongated tourism commercial."[58] Jaspreet Pandohar gave the film two out of five stars ().[58]

File:Aishkisshrithik.jpg
The kissing scene betweem Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan in the film caused a controversy.

The film had eventually caused several impacts on either public or casts. The film's styles and techniques of driving motorcycles had caused youths in India to ride their motorcycles rashly, causing an increase in the number of road accidents in Mumbai, India.[3] Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan eventually developed feeling for love since the film, which now the couples are married to each other on April 20, 2007.[34][59] The film also sparked a controversy for a scene containing a kiss between Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan.[60] The robberies involved in the film wasn't inspired from any other robberies, non compared to Dhoom.[61] Although that, the robberies was good enough, till it inspired a teenager to rob his uncle's money, where the teenager wore dress similar to Hrithik's clothing.[62]. India's biggest game producer company, FXLabs, also confirmed to release a video game titled Dhoom 2.5, based on the film.[6] The characters in the film also will appear in the video game.[63] Yash Raj Films CEO Sanjeev Kohli said,

Gaming is fast gaining acceptance among our target audience and this is the first time an Indian movie is being extended into a game. Dhoom had become a favorite film with youngsters and Dhoom 2 has gone a step beyond. The Dhoom 2 video game will feature characters from the movie as well as all the action and excitement our fans have come to expect.[63]
