Potential conflict of interest
Hello Help Desk,
The company I work for is looking to create a Wikipedia page on their operations. So far the plan is to internally create an article, and I can forsee potential future issues with conflicts of interest.
I do believe that articles on the company founder, as well as a business concept that is relevant to the company, are both significant enough to warrant their own articles, but I do worry about the current plan.
Is it possible to outsource the article creation to an unbiased third party?
What do you recommend we do in this scenario to avoid breaking Wikipedia's rules? This is the first time I've been a part of the creation of a Wikipedia article that I am a stakeholder in...
Regards, --Coin945 (talk) 04:17, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, Coin945. First, familiarize yourself (and your team) with the relevant policies and guidelines on conflict of interest if you have not already: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
- As for what is significant enough to warrant an article, refer to Wikipedia:Notability.
- I've actually had good experiences with contributions by companies. The procedure is to suggest changes on the talk page of the article (if the article exists already; use Template:Request edit) or use the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process if it's a new article. This ensures that an unaffiliated editor will review the content. In both cases, the contributors should make their conflict of interest and possible paid relationship absolutely clear.
- My past experience is that established companies have competent people who can manage research and write good content. I'd like to stress that they should only use sources that are independent of the company – not the company website, its press releases, annual reports, sales catalogues, testimonies by customers etc. (see Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources and Wikipedia:Independent sources). If there are independent sources, and the procedure described above is observed, then company contributions can be valuable additions to Wikipedia. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 12:33, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you Finnusertop for your swift reply. I have been an editor of wikipedia for about 10 years, and am well aware of the third party reliable sourcing rule, which I know is vital for any article, but particularly pertinent when a company is writing about itself. Not all biases are conscious, after all... But as I said I do think the two article topics have enough third party reliable sources to justify their existence, and it is a case of being transparent and open to compromise on our end. I know I am, at least. :)--Coin945 (talk) 13:55, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

- I recall participating in a discussion of this article's Reference 1 a few months ago, and noted then that
- (a) the book referenced (which I own) does not support the wording of the sentence citing it, and
- (b) this and other works cited in several of the references give the name of their Printer rather than that of their Publisher, which seems to me irregular. I am currently (again) at Work so cannot conveniently address this further at this time. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 185.74.232.130 (talk) 14:36, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Help in a community falling apart
Hello.
Extended content

---|
i would like to share my story with Jerry Brown social services in San Luis Obispo pretty much taunted me with the fact that I am a no body and I will neer get heard. I was raised by a single mother who did her best to raise me but had limited resources so we were abused mentally by her partners. I vowed to become educated and wait to hae children. I learned I had a disability and school was a challenge I was able to get educated through the disability program. I met a man in college very smart and I thought extreamly nice. I was a alone no family support I had a church but my boyfriend was my family. I became pregnant at the end of my senior year in college with a Bachlors degree. I finished at the humiliation of my fat body. My partner left the country and our lives forever. I picked myself up after 15 hours of ripping up mybody and my mom came to buy us a mobile home it was all we could afford on our small budget. She was difficult to live with so she and her partner bought a mobile home next to us. I worked for a non profit homeless shelter and I did many roles and worked hard. I had some challenges with my writing skills but the manager worked with me. I worked for 5 years until my daughter was 8 I was very lonely. I met a nice guy through mutual friends. We hung around together for 1 1/2 I was not careful and became pregnant. It was a huge mistake I did not know the man was bi-polar and a hidden alcoholic. He had his own place but when our son was born he had cystic fibrosis we were both genetic carriers. It completely took my life away. I had to change to the night shelter job and I never slept. It changed my personality working and caring for my sick child. I did not qualify for sdi for my son een though I was severely sleep deprived. My partner drank more and was acting stange around my daughter from a former partner as a mother I had to protect her but as a tired woman I kept the father comming around to help. This later bite me in the rump. He became controlling and a stalker he thought I was with other people because I did not always call him only when I needed his help for sleep relief. I ended up having to get a restraining order. It did not work he attacked me 2 times I feared for my life. I ended up leaving the shelter on stress leave and they fired me so I got a job at Home depote where my life was crazy I had hours 5 am to 2 pm and 2 pm to 11 pm they were not very understanding that I had a sick son I became pregnant with another child same dad he took advantage when I had a few drinks to unwind. I went on pregnancy leae and had family care. I had food stamps because the kids dad was not always working he was an electrition he was not able to help us. I was hired at a state agency serving food to inmates it was suppose to be a stepping stone for more reliable hours and better health care. I had a lot of problems in our mobile home park drinkers and drug users lived in the park and the manager did not kick them out I had near misses on my 2 year old crossing the street. I asked my mom to sale the mobile so we could put a down on a real house. The park was sold to a business man in San Francisco. They came here to buy us out. They are trying to get us out legally by saying our parks are run down. It took us 3 years with our place on the market when my mom sold it she lost all her profit and I invested 20,000. $ to fix it up all gone. I was in a section 8 house and the landlord wanted to rent it out for more then what the section 8 would pay. We had our deposite taken from a new bad landlord and section 8 told me it cost them money for a inspector so I had to reapply I waited 12 years for that section 8 and now me and my kids have been stuck on my moms floor and couch. My kids are angry and hurt that they have no room. I can not afford to get a place on my own I do not get child support because my ex is a dangerious man and I recieve sdi for one son for his speach and the other son who has learning challenges due to his lack of adequate ingestion and learning disabilities will not qualify because he is not death or blind. We can not afford to move out of the area and we have support here when my sons miss school or go to the doctors my mom helps a lot and when I have strange hours at work she watches them. I need changes and if I have these issues with our programs others might as well. I have to say without a safe place to bring my children up I feel like I am losing my sanity and I can not parent in a calm way. I lose sleep over eat and yell and say negative things because I can not win in this society where the rich own all the land. No matter how hard I work I can not get our own safe home and I can not bring my special needs children to an appartment complex they can not function in this type of environment. These are my issues I would like to get across to goernor Brown or his wife:
Why should my life be punished because I had a bad partner and low paying jobs and 2 children who need extra care? Why can we be a community and help each other out so I am not a time bomb ready to explode and possibly go to jail and then tax payers have to pay for my children to be raised by someone else who will not love them as I do. I am writing is despiration I need something to go my way my children are having more and more issues the more frustrated and depressed I feel. If land was free I would be fine to go set up a tent and raise my children in it as long as we were warm and had our space. Why are you letting all the rich decide our lives? We have uncaring bosses who do not care if your goofy from lack of sleep or that you have IEP meeting, behavior meeting with the teacher, language meetings, dentist appointments, doctors appointments. Times are changed not everyone has resources for child care not everyone has the money to hire people to help with these challenges. We all need to look around and see how we can make better stronger communities. Then children will not grow up hating the world. Its all from a safe childhood and if the rich suppress the poor and make them feel pinched we have many good people sitting and rotting in jail using tax payers money to get bigger, angrier, and smarter about using the system to become better crooks that take from the nice humble people. Please help me find the right person to review my requests if these changes can not help me then maybe future generations. Impower women to give all children the chance to be loved even if they were not born perfect. |

Change Settings - password and email
Hello, I would like to change the email address and the password I am using on my account. I can't seem to find the settings to change this. Thank you.
JotamVA (talk) 12:51, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- If you click on the "Preferences" link at the top of any page, it will open a "User profile" window. In the "Basic information" section there is a link for "Change password". In the "Email options" section, there is a link for "Change or remove email address". -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:59, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Deacktivate account
[How] can I deactivate this account? After deactivating this one can I create another one? ThanksRenamed user qweretrztzuzuzubvxcver4fdsf (talk) 17:33, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- 1) Wikipedia accounts cannot normally be deactivated. You can just stop using the account. If you wish, you can change your password to a random string of characters that you'll never remember. But otherwise, your account cannot be removed or deactivated. It can be renamed to a random string of characters, as described at WP:VANISH, but it looks like you already did that. 2) If you wish to create a new account, you may, so long as you are not violating any of the rules listed at Wikipedia:Sock puppetry. --Jayron32 18:03, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Any anti-POV cliques mechanisms
Does Wikipedia have mechanisms to counter POV cliques? Does Wikipedia have proactive mechanisms to counter violations, or are counter measures only taken when someone files a complaint? Formulairis990 (talk) 18:33, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Formulairis990: various kinds of Wikipedia:Dispute resolution exist to tackle problems with POV-"pushing" editors or groups of editors. If normal article talk page interaction fails, Wikipedia:Requests for comment and Wikipedia:Third opinion can be used to attract the attention of a wider range of editors, who might not be regular editors of the problem articles. If POV-pushing is disruptive and becomes an issue of incivility and user conduct, the process can go all the way up to Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee, which can set topic bans. Many political subjects are under Arbitration Committee sanctions in either of the two ways: some editors are banned from editing them altogether, or, problematic editing of some topic will get all editors blocked easier than on normal topics. I think the proactive component comes about by editors being mindful of these processes and recognizing that unconstructive POV-pushing will potentially get them in trouble. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 20:24, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. A problem I see with this process is that it requires a level of familiarity, investment, and commitment that acts as a high hurdle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Formulairis990 (talk • contribs) 21:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Where is the best place to ask a question about disambiguation?
I have a fairly complicated question to ask about disambiguation, and I'd like to find the right place to ask it. Here (WP:HD)? WT:DAB? WT:WPDAB? Somewhere else (WP:VPM, perhaps)? A pointer would be most appreciated. Tevildo (talk) 21:08, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- WT:DAB is the place to discuss the guidelines about disambiguating. For specific questions about a particular dab page or issue I would suggest WT:WPDAB, although I have seen questions there go unanswered at times. Mb66w (talk) 04:58, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Ask away. I've had a fair bit of experience with 'em (and I've got the scars to prove it). Clarityfiend (talk) 05:24, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. Feel free to repost this at a more appropriate venue. I've expressed the question in generic terms, but I can provide a specific example if necessary.
- There is a fictional character called <Name>, who is not sufficiently notable to have their own article. Information on the character is available at List of <Publication> characters.
- We have a disambiguation page <Name> (given name) which already lists a number of fictional characters (but not the one from <Publication>). We also have <Name> (disambiguation), if that's relevant.
- How should the character appear on the dab page? I can think of three alternatives, and there may be another solution:
- 1. Add an entry to the dab page: <Name>, character from <Publication> - see List of <Publication> characters
- 2. Create a redirect <Name> (<Publication>), which points to the character's section on the list page. Add <Name> (<Publication>), character from <Publication> to the dab page.
- 3. Put a piped link on the dab page - <Name>, character from <Publication>
- Option 3 is probably the least preferred (although the most logical), as piped links are discouraged on dab pages. However, any advice or alternative suggestions from someone experienced in the area would be very useful. Tevildo (talk) 23:46, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Both option 2 (MOS:DABREDIR) and 3 (MOS:DABPIPING) are allowed. In fact, the latter gives a specific example (Ten or Tenshinhan) that exactly matches what you're describing. 2 is less attractive because it says "This indicates a higher possibility that the topic may eventually have its own article." I generally use option 1 when the linked article is a related topic that has significant information about the entry. Clarityfiend (talk) 01:26, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks again! Option 3 it is. Tevildo (talk) 00:26, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

References
I've seen some articles where the references are formatted with two columns of references instead of just one, as {reflist|30em}} instead of just as {reflist}} When is each appropriate? (The missing bracket at the beginning is just so it would show as text in this quesstion) Margalob (talk) 23:26, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- This is explained here. Basically, a single column is better for a few footnotes but two columns is preferred with many footnotes. Mb66w (talk) 04:46, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- That actually says that 30em is preferred. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:25, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- The advice to avoid multiple columns for few footnotes is mentioned in Template:Reflist/doc#Practices. GermanJoe (talk) 11:46, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- The template does not say 30em is preferred, it says: "The number of columns to use is up to the editor, but some major practices include: 1 column (default): Where there are only a few Footnotes; 30em: Where there are many footnotes plus a page-width Bibliography subsection; 20em: Where Shortened footnotes are used" Mb66w (talk) 14:07, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- It says "Using 2 will force creation of a two-column reference list, and 3 will force creation of a three-column list, and so on. This feature is now deprecated in favor of the option described above [30em], which is better suited to flexible formatting for a variety of display screen sizes ..." (bolding mine) Clarityfiend (talk) 01:32, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
- I think you misunderstand this. The section you referenced means you should use [30em] instead of specifying the number of columns with |2 or |3 (deprecated feature) when you want multiple columns. It does not say 30em is preferred in all cases. As stated above, Template:Reflist/doc#Practices clearly says that one column is common practice for a few footnotes. someone keeps removing Consul General Thomas Adamson.. the original details were lost and I would have to now research this again and find the information to add it back to wikipedia.. someone removed it purposely I am sure.. the slander against this surname is well documented.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.181.245.59 (talk) 03:12, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- That name appears to have first been added in 2012 with this edit. As far as I can see it has never been sourced. If I've missed it you can use the page history to recover deleted information from any previous version. Otherwise, to be included two things need to happen: a) Thomas Adamson needs to have his own article written, as we normally only include notable people in lists like this, and the current link is to a disambiguation page that doesn't mention this particular Adamson; and b) his a link to his article needs to be added with a citation that verifies his having this decoration. I have no idea what you mean about slander about the Adamson name. Rojomoke (talk) 04:06, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

We are a new international school in Banting, Selangor, Malaysia, and I attempted to add us to a few relevant lists but after a couple, it says it appears that I'm spamming and I may be blacklisted if I persist.
Could you please tell me whether this is appropriate or inappropriate (spamming) behaviour on Wikipedia? The first link I posted may be seen here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_schools_in_Kuala_Lumpur#International_Schools - under "Victoria International School".

Javad Marandi
Hello, my name is Bennett Golder, and I work at PR agency Weber Shandwick on behalf of Javad Marandi. I've been working for a few weeks to get some factual inaccuracies removed from his page and have previously reached out via his Talk Page, the BLP Noticeboard, and I've contacted the OTRS. The OTRS directed me to the Help page and suggested that I make a request here. I thought this was largely for Wikipedia usage queries, but the OTRS volunteer advised me that a larger group of volunteers staff this page and it could be a useful resource. Specifically the edits I am requesting are:
1. After legal action, the Guardian Media Group has decided to remove articles in the Guardian/Observer which are citations 4 and 6 on Javad's Wikipedia entry. Owing to the fact that these articles have been removed and the publisher refuses to stand by their content, I do not believe they constitute verifiable third-party sources and in the interest of honest and accuracy, references to these citations should be removed from his page. You can see the removed article here: http://www.theguardian.com/news/2016/apr/09/tory-donor-was-trusted-middleman-for-oil-firm-involved-in-bribes-inquiry.
2. Additionally, Director Magazine has made corrections to their article about business in Azerbaijan to accurately reflect Javad's business interests. Specifically, he is not an owner of Pasha Construction (the 'construction company' mentioned in his Wikipedia article), but rather he is an adviser. Additionally Chinar is actually a restaurant in Baku, and Javad Marandi does not own it. We feel this sentence should be altered to more accurately reflect the content within the cited article: "Marandi owns a company in Azerbaijan called Chinar, the country's "largest distribution business" and a construction company.[3]" A more accurate statement would be: "Marandi owns the country's largest distribution business and is an adviser to a construction firm." The Director Magazine article is citation 3 on Javad's Wikipedia page and you can find it here: http://www.director.co.uk/9071-doing-business-in-azerbaijan/. If you look through the article, you’ll see what nowhere does it corroborate the information contained within Javad Marandi’s Wikipedia page.

- Thank you very much Robert McClenon and Maproom - very kind of you to say! If either of you (or any editors you know) might be willing to look into this, I'd be very grateful. I think you'll find once you look into it that the requests are pretty uncontroversial - we're simply asking to remove references to an article that the publisher has removed from the web and that a sentence accurately reflects the information contained within the third-party source that is referencing. I've posted on his Talk Page, the BLP Noticeboard and emailed the OTRS so far, but no luck. Btgolder (talk) 08:54, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello,
I would like ot note an inaccuracy in the article on The World's 50 Best Restaurants (The World's 50 Best Restaurants), it started from Restaurant Magazine but is now produced in its own capacity. If you could please adjust the copy to reflect this, that would be great.

Portal 2000s is facing a major problem
Hello. I would like to point out that the 2000s portal isn't displaying properly, and I can't fix it. It's not easy to access the portal with it displaying inncorectly. Could some help out? Thanks. Redolta (talk) 13:04, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- This diff appears to be the last one that displayed correctly. I'd revert back to that one and go on from there. --Jayron32 14:55, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Redolta: It displayed properly for me some times and not others. I tracked it down to Portal:2000s/DYK/Footer which is only used when the randomly selected DYK exists like Portal:2000s/DYK/3. I fixed some incomplete table code [1] and now it works for me each time. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:03, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Ed - unable to connect
Hello, I am unable to connect to Wiki Education. I am getting a DNS not found message and so are my students. I have tried the course enrollment link and the basic link. I am on a PC and tried both Chrome and IE. Because my student reported this from a remote location and I was able to recreate the problem, I suspect the site is down. Can anyone confirm that or give me any further advice? Thanks, BethJaneToren (talk) 17:02, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

changing the article name
Hi. Sagar S is an Indian music composer. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagar_S_(Kannada_music_director) This is the link to the page. Sagar S (music director) was how it was named earlier. But now it has been changed to Sagar S (Kannada music director). Kannada is an Indian language. Now, the issue is Sagar S has worked in more than 5 Indian languages. Calling him a Kannada music director doesn't seem right in anyway. When checked, there are absolutely no other articles in this name (a reason given when the article's name was changed). So can the page be changed to either Sagar S (Indian music director) or Sagar S (music director). How can that be done? Prakashlyrics (talk) 17:08, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- I thought this was discussed weeks ago and it was determined that it should be at simply Sagar S because no disambiguation is needed. Dismas|(talk) 17:11, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Moved from WT:HD — crh 23 (Talk) 17:54, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
@ Dismas and crh 23
Thanks a lot. So that means, it will be Sagar S only and No Kannada music director or Indian music director will be added? So how would the change happen? Do I need to do something about it or you would handle it?
Prakashlyrics (talk) 18:49, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Sagar S already exists as a re-direct. Eagleash (talk) 19:13, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Eagleash: Thanks a lot. I am sorry for being a trouble. I have another question. When you open the page, it still says 'Kannada Music Director' in brackets which I feel is not right. Would that be removed? Is there something that could be done to remove that or just replace that with 'Indian Music Director'? Prakashlyrics (talk) 19:20, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- The fact that a re-direct already exists makes it slightly more complicated when it comes to moving (changing the name) the page to that name. It can require Admin. assistance but I believe it is possible without. But I'm not sufficiently au fait with the procedure or I would have moved it when this was last discussed. Eagleash (talk) 19:25, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Eagleash and Prakashlyrics: The redirect has a non trivial (more than one line) page history, so it does indeed require an admin to delete (see WP:MOR). I have tagged it for speedy deletion with db-move, so an admin should delete it and move the page soon — crh 23 (Talk) 20:03, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Crh23:. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 20:08, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Stitching edit histories
I wanted to move Crawford Educational Complex to its current name, Will C. Crawford High School. However it's occupied by this edit history. The edit history of "Crawford Educational Complex" is also long. Should these two have their edit histories merged? And if so how do I do it? WhisperToMe (talk) 20:32, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: a good way to do it is to use requested moves. If you are sure the move would be uncontroversial, list it as a technical request. It is possible that you could get the target page deleted under G6, but I am not certain as it has a looks like it was merged into the new article. It has a substantial history, some of which may be acting as attribution for the new page. — crh 23 (Talk) 09:54, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

- "Will C. Crawford High School" was merged to "Crawford Educational Complex" in 2013 without attribution. The page histories were overlapping before the merge and would be a mess on the same page. I am trying to incorporate the "rowspan" feature into a chart.
I am trying to incorporate the "rowspan" feature into a chart. The chart is located here: User talk:Joseph A. Spadaro/Sandbox/Page71#Chart 1. In the first two rows, I want the column called "Ceremony" to have a rowspan of 2. When I try it, I get an error. You can see the error/results here: User talk:Joseph A. Spadaro/Sandbox/Page71#Chart 2. What am I doing wrong? When I remove the data-sort-value="01" command, everything is fine. (See Chart #3, here: User talk:Joseph A. Spadaro/Sandbox/Page71#Chart 3.) But when I keep the data-sort-value="01" in, that seems to cause the problem. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 02:28, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Adding an article that has the same title as an existing article
I wish to add an article about the Three Castles Walk in the Corvedale, Shropshire (there are various references that I can cite). There is already an article titled "Three Castles Walk" which refers to a walk in Monmouthshire. Obviously I can title my article "Corvedale Three Castles Walk". But what do I do about the existing article? It seems to me that this needs to have its title amended and then a disambiguation page ("Three Castles Walk") created. I would propose to create (when logged in) my new article "Corvedale Three Castles Walk" and then wait a while to make sure it is acceptable. Then I would change the name of the existing page and create a disambiguation page. Am I going about this the right way? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Archerbarrie (talk • contribs) 20:14, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
- My understanding is that a disambiguation page is discouraged unless there are more than two articles involved. Instead, there should be an article "Three Castles Walk" with a hatnote saying "for the walk in Shropshire, see 'Three Castles Walk (Shropshire)'", and an article "Three Castles Walk (Shropshire)" with a hatnote saying "for the walk in Monmouthshire, see 'Three Castles Walk'". Maproom (talk) 20:31, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
- Minor note: the normally used way to disambiguate places would be Three Castles Walk, Shropshire, not Three Castles Walk (Shropshire). Joseph2302 (talk) 20:44, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
- That is not the default best way to disambiguate article. An American would read Three Castles Walk, Shropshire as the town of Three Castles Walk in the area of Shropshire. See WP:Disambiguation. I think a thing at a place is usually x (y), while a place in a place is more often (but not always) x, y. Rmhermen (talk) 22:15, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
- The "for the..." template that Maproom is referring to is for. Dismas|(talk) 20:49, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Pending change review process question
I reviewed a pending change today of Laverne Cox and did not accept it because it was unsourced info in a BLP. Shortly thereafter, another editor reverted my change but added a citation. Rather than just doing a new edit and adding the citation - this editor appears to have done a revert and edit in one step. I'm just wondering how this works and is this common? I haven't seen it before. Was this the right way to handle this. I'm a little concerned because my change was reverted (is there any reason have any concern about this?) (The editor actually reverted their own change a few minutes later.) Mb66w (talk) 00:26, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
- This has nothing to do with pending changes. It has to do with the undo button. When you click undo, you also get the option to make additional changes besides just reverting. In this case, General Ization hit undo, and then went to the material and added a source in one action. -- The Voidwalker Discuss 19:32, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Magazine Logo
I am working on writing a wikipedia article about a magazine, and am wondering about the logo image to put in the infobox. The logo of this magazine is a G with a superscript M, all in serif capitals. I'm pretty sure it is not trademarked. How should I go about uploading an image of this— should I copy the logo image from their website and upload that, or recreate it myself, knowing that I might not get the font and placement just right? How would wikipedia's image copyright restrictions apply in this scenario? Margalob (talk) 02:29, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Margalob: Please provide a link to the website or at least the title of the article so I can look it up myself. If it is just script, nothing else, it would not meet the threshold of originality and can be uploaded to commons with PD-textlogo as the license. However, just because it is not copyrighted (provided it does not meet the threshold) does not mean it is not trademarked. Please be careful not to confuse copyright with trademark. --Majora (talk) 02:35, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

- Bgonzalez512, I've just read over the lead section and history. Both of them sound like they came straight out of some promotional web site (possibly even the company's web site). They sound like advertising speak rather than a natural description of the company. Please see WP:NPOV and WP:PROMOTION. Once the article has been re-written to not sound like an advertisement, you (or anyone else) can take the notice off the article. Dismas|(talk) 19:06, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, Brittiny. Please remember that Wikipedia is not interested in what the company, or its employees, associates or friends, say about it. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the company have published about it, in reliable places. An article on the company should be based almost 100% on what these unconnected people have published about it (though rewritten, so as not to infringe their copyright). If an independent reliable source has talked about "enabling groups to form 'human swarms'" in connection with the company (and note that that would not include any article based on a press release or an interview, but only a truly independent piece of writing), then the article can talk about it: otherwise nothing about this belongs in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ColinFine (talk • contribs)

- Hello, CEOBryantR. I'm afraid that what you are doing wrong is trying to use Wikipedia for promotion: this is forbidden. Wikipedia has no interest in what a person says about themself, or what their friends, relatives, employers, or associates, say about them: none. It is only interested in what people who have no connection to them have published about them in reliabale places (and it needs to be independent: not anything based on press releases or interviews with them). If such sources exist, then there can be an article about them, based entirely on what these independent people have published. If there are not such sources, then no Wikipedia article about them is possible, however it is written. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 22:17, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

I am still confused. The last "accepted" on the above page was NOT by the editor called "Dismas". The most recent "accepted" was: [accepted by Gilo1969]. Why, then, is the phrase "pending..." still placed at the top of the page near "History' etc? Please help with any explanations. Thanks so much Srbernadette (talk) 23:35, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
- I didn't say I made an edit. I was just explaining what I saw on the article. If you're still seeing "Pending" then you should probably clear your browser's cache to get it to display correctly. Or you can just put it out of your mind and eventually the cache will be cleared anyway and the article will display correctly at a later date. Dismas|(talk) 23:40, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
Sources
Hey Guys,
What is the procedure for sourcing a plaque? It is to take a picture? How would you use a picture as a source?
Cheers,

- Did you read Help:File_page? RegistryKey(RegEdit) 05:12, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- I think JoshMuirWikipedia's question is about how to provide a reference for a plaque's existence, RegistryKey. I think the answer is that, while you can probably upload a picture of the plaque for illustration (though I am a bit hazy about the copyright implication), a reference must have been published. If a picture of the plaque has been published by a reliable publisher, then it could be used (as a Primary source only) - it doesn't then need to be uploaded, since the reference should give the information that a reader needs in principle to find it. But if it hasn't been published (as would probably be the case for a picture you took yourself) it cannot ever be used as a reference. --ColinFine (talk) 10:01, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- I was thinking that as well, just wanted validation of my thought process, thanks. Although it does touch on the concept of referencing the information mentioned on the plaque, although that information is likely contained elsewhere as well (military records, news articles, etc.) RegistryKey(RegEdit) 10:07, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- I think I should have been more specific. There are a variety of information boards and plaques down at the Bicton Baths, and since I started the article yesterday, I went down there to get some information. I took pictures of the location, the boards and the plaques. My question was whether I could use the pictures as references for the information provided on them. I have checked online, and a lot of the information provided is not provided online. Note the information was published by an official source, which I am planning on including in the picture description. Thanks heaps, JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 11:53, 20 May 2016 (UTC).

- Hi, JoshMuirWikipedia. I'm not sure that erecting a plaque would count as "publishing" in Wikipedia's sense: you possibly need to ask at the Reliable sources noticeboard. But uploading your photo of a plaque, though it can be useful as illustration, cannot contribute to a reference, because in these days of Photoshop, a picture is simply not a reliable source unless it (the picture) was published by a reliable publisher. --ColinFine (talk) 20:59, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Odd message
Not sure if this is the right place to ask - when I logged in just now on the English wiki, I had a notification at the top of the page telling me I'd been sent a new message on the Turkish wikipedia, where I do not have an account, ostensibly last August (though I'm certain it wasn't there last time I logged in). The notification message has now vanished, though the (spurious?) welcome message remains. Not sure if any of that's legit, and I don't really understand it if it is? Any idea what's going on, or who to ask? Thanks! AJN (talk) 00:07, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- FWIW, a few days ago I received notices about (apparent - I could not read them) welcome messages on three non-English WPs, none of them very recent. Can't seem to find them in the list now, one may have been Persian. I ignored them after a few seconds of puzzlement. I wonder if there's a way to see what user and talk pages exist for an account globally (I really don't want to look at all 291 wikis individually)? Rwessel (talk) 00:30, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) :When you create a Wikipedia account, you automatically create accounts on other (Global) sites. You can see this by clicking on preferences at the top of any page and then on 'global account info.' If at any time you have accessed a page on Turkish Wiki., whilst logged in, this will have been 'logged' and the welcome message automatically generated. Eagleash (talk) 00:36, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) And of course there is a tool: https://tools.wmflabs.org/meta/userpages/ And there are several additional welcome messages out there in places I've never edited. Rwessel (talk) 00:38, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- It's not necessary (as far as I can tell) to have actually edited, just to have accessed a page. Eagleash (talk) 00:41, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Review Edit Aditi Singh
Hi i have recently created an article for a new debutant actress Aditi Singh, but my page keeps on getting rejected can someone please help as we really want her page to be put up on wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anuj90 (talk • contribs) 05:25, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Anuj90! If you don't mind could you clarify how do you know Aditi Singh? (As in, are you a friend/family/employer/employee/PR agent etc) --Lemongirl942 (talk) 06:50, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi i am a friend of aditi singh and also run a digital marketing company - Havock Web Designers — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anuj90 (talk • contribs) 08:45, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Anuj90: Alright. I will take this discussion to your talk page. A bit occupied right now, so I will reply later. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 10:00, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Anuj90,for your previous question about why the page may be deleted, this is because in Wikipedia we only have articles if the subject is notable. In your case, the subject "Aditi Singh" is an actor. The specific notability guidelines can be found at WP:NACTOR. If she satisfies this, then there may be an article. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 10:06, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hello, Anuj90. If she is a "new debutant" actress, it is very likely that she does not yet meet Wikipedia's criteria for Notability: please see WP:UPANDCOMING. The fact that "we really want her page to be put up on Wikipedia" indicates that you are her in order to promote her, rather than to improve Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 10:08, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Communication on talk pages
Hi, hope this is the right place to ask.
I've got a bit lost in all the how to / FAQS / reference pages. I made a change and some someone reverted it. I wanted to discuss it with them on the talk pages, but I'm not sure how to let them know I did it. I posted their name to begin with, before figuring out how to make it a blue link. I'm unsure as to whether that's going to attract their attention or not? Could someone advise? When is it appropriate or not appropriate to notify someone? Should I have written on the user page instead?
The talk page in question is here Talk:The_Amber_Spyglass
Thanks for your help Scribolt (talk) 06:54, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- You can use Template:Reply to. Or you can also use Example --Lemongirl942 (talk) 06:56, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- You can also simply use User:Example and it will send a notification. (Please don't forget to sign your post though, otherwise the notification may not be sent). Generally, I prefer to send a notification only the first time. Once a discussion starts, it is usually not used (as most editors add the page to their watchlist). --Lemongirl942 (talk) 07:00, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Problem with Shashi kumar(Arjun)

Shashi kumar(Arjun) article is getting problem with the content doesn't come right side of the article — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arjun skymax (talk • contribs) 11:16, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- If you are asking about the peculiar formatting in Shashi Kumar (Arjun), it is because a leading space on a line prevents proper formatting, see Help:Wiki markup#Limiting formatting / escaping wiki markup. What is more significant is that there is no evidence that the subject of the article meets Wikipedia's definition of notability, hence the article has been tagged for speedy deletion. I have put some useful links on your user talk page, including WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:42, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Note also that the standard of English in the attempted article is not good enough for the English Wikipedia. If you haven't got a good enough command of English, then you would be better off editing a Wikipedia in your own native language. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:46, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Interlanguage wikilinks
I have been copyediting some articles that appear to have originated in non-English wikipedias. I often run across terms that I would like to link, but the only available wikilink is a interlanguage one. Should I add these wikilinks using the same criteria used for English links, or is it better to keep these links to a minimum? Leschnei (talk) 13:19, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- This doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to make sure you're aware of ill. Just a friendly FYI. Dismas|(talk) 13:36, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the FYI; I have used that. It's just that some articles would be full of interlanguage links, and I'm not sure if I should do that. Leschnei (talk) 14:14, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Using two infobox templates on the same page
How do I use two infobox templates on the same page, without them appearing as separate boxes? For example, a nonprofit museum might use both the infobox museum and infobox organization templates. Thanks all. ~ Quacks Like a Duck (talk) 14:08, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Why would you want two? Just use the more specific one – in your example, infobox museum. Maproom (talk) 17:45, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- I've seen this done many times. Can't think of any article examples off the top of my head but I've seen it used in biography articles where both the Model Infobox and Playboy Playmate template have been used within one infobox. Dismas|(talk) 18:36, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Found one! Carmella DeCesare. Dismas|(talk) 18:40, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) In this case, I can't see why 2 infoboxes is needed. The only time I've seen them used is people who've played 2 sports, or 1 sport and something else e.g. Imran Khan. There's many ways to combine infoboxes, one is to have the first infobox, then ------, then second infobox- this puts a line between the 2 infoboxes. Joseph2302 (talk) 18:43, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Infobox museum has an
embedded
parameter but Infobox organization has nochild
ormodule
parameter so it appears the two infoboxes cannot be combined. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:48, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Too much depth template?
This is oddly a question that I've never had to ask in 10 years on Wikipedia. Is there a template for "Too much depth". I'm looking at History of Scouting in the Philippines and having problems getting the author to understand that much of this (like the bios) is too much depth for Wikipedia. I welcome a page on the History of Scouting in the Philippines, but there is enough there for 4 or 5 articles and I'm not sure all of it is suitable. I'm really not trying to frighten this user away and I'd like to see their entire effort off-wikipedia, much of it is wonderful... (I've already asked on WP:SCOUT but haven't gotten a response) Ideas?Naraht (talk) 15:15, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Naraht: Overly detailed, perhaps, or Very long? -- John of Reading (talk) 15:25, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Put in both, Overly detailed is probably more appropriate...Naraht (talk) 17:29, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Article revisions getting reverted
Hello! I'm attempting to make additions to the Fallon Worldwide page, however, my two attempts have been unsuccessful. I would be grateful to anyone that could help me edit the page without it getting reverted.
Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickmastodon1 (talk • contribs)
- It looks like the major issue with your additions is that you aren't doing references in the manner that wikipedia articles are standardized on. References in Wikipedia look sort of like The sky is green.. You may want to go to WP:REFERENCES or go on the "Wikipedia Adventure" which can be accessed from links which have been placed on your talk page.Naraht (talk) 21:23, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Nickmastodon1 Additionally, passages like Fallon Worldwide is a Minneapolis-based, full-service global advertising agency founded in 1981 by five visionaries seeking to dispel the perception of the Midwest ad community as a geographically bound rural outpost.
