Hi Cwmhiraeth! I've just posted in my sandbox a suggested stub article - I'm relatively new to editing but noticed you also edited some TV actors with which I'm familiar. Would you be able to please help to see if my sandbox suggestions are okay? Ajcwritwiki (talk) 17:25, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ajcwritwiki: You didn't use your own personal sandbox, which is here, but a general sandbox that anyone can experiment with. I have rescued your edits for you and put them in your personal sandbox. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:55, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like a good start. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:58, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 00:18, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bloom6132: I thought I had changed the scoring rules to get rid of this anomaly. Perhaps I got it wrong. I would prefer to change the rules rather than keep having to adjust contestants' scores. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:10, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think Jarry1250 did not get around to moving the "marker" up by one year. —Bloom6132 (talk) 05:28, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, now I see what you did with that scoring rule change. Anyhow, I still think we should see if Jarry1250 could fix that "one year behind" issue – sure, it may only be one point missing for each DYK nom, but that was the difference between the lowest-scoring qualifier and the highest-scoring editor who got eliminated this round. —Bloom6132 (talk) 03:59, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bloom6132: The trouble is that Jarry has had little activity on Wikipedia lately, it is no use pinging somebody who is not there, and I think we will need to sort this out ourselves. I don't believe that it is critical as to who moves into the next round on this occasion, but it might be in the future. Would you like to adjust the scoring rules so that they agree with what happens in practice, because I think that is the best way of dealing with this. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:11, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think that'll be a good idea. I don't have any particular wording in mind though. —Bloom6132 (talk) 10:22, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bloom6132: I was just looking at this when you posted here. What if we change the 5 bonus points to 4 bonus points and change the scoring example. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:41, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The minimum number of bonus points awarded by the bot is still 5 (just for articles created from 2015 and older). So I think the changes you made earlier in January cover that. Not sure about the scoring example. —Bloom6132 (talk) 11:07, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Processa edulis

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Rupie

Regarding Template:POTD/2021-05-13: I have no idea what the best plural of rupie is in English, but that article uses both "rupies" and the German "rupien". (Sadly, it is also confused about whether or not to capitalize the word.) The POTD page currently uses "rupie" was the plural, though. My instinct is to go with "rupies", but my instinct is not a reliable source. --184.147.181.129 (talk) 08:30, 6 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I also was puzzled by this, but I thought we could use the singular form, as it is usual to talk about a "ten pound note" rather than a "ten pounds note". Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:40, 6 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hook swap

I just saw you swapped out the Senning hook; was there a particular reason? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 15:44, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdkb: Well, the article doesn't say that he was the fifth generation in his family to publish a manners guide, it says he was the fifth generation in his family to run the Emily Post Institute. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:37, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cwmhiraeth, honestly, I'm a bit annoyed that you didn't even ping me. The main thing the Emily Post Institute does is to put out a manners guide, which was sufficient for the reviewer to meet the "mentioned in the article" requirement. If you felt it wasn't, you could've pinged me and I'd have been happy to tweak a few words to make the connection explicit, or you could've done the tweak yourself. Instead, you switched at the last minute to the backup ALT that was a lot less compelling without notifying anyone, and I didn't notice until it was live on the main page. Most of the time slot has now been used up, and unless the hook is somehow extended the opportunity for the more interesting fact to appear has now been lost. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:48, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: I would have taken the matter to the DYK discussion page, but when I found that the reviewer had approved ALT1 as well, I thought substituting it was entirely satisfactory. Why did you propose ALT1 on the nominations page if you did not want it used? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:56, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I offered it as an alternative in case my instinct that ALT0 was a lot more compelling was wrong. The reviewer noted that they preferred ALT0, confirming my instinct, and I checked prep 7 when it was promoted to confirm that ALT0 had been the hook promoted, so I assumed it would be set to go unless I heard otherwise. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 20:03, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing how this played out, it makes me disinclined to offer backup alts, since I see they can be misused as a way to not have to bother resolving issues, even at the expense of interestingness. This one hook wasn't a giant deal, but I really would've appreciated just a simple apology and a promise to ping the nominator when you make a swap in the future. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 20:42, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page watcher)-- I don't consider any apology necessary. Sdkb could have included a note saying "I strongly prefer ALT0, and would like this to run, if at all possible" or strucken out ALT1 once the reviewer agreed that ALT0 was acceptable. they could have not offered a separate ALT that you didn't want to run. They could have thanked Cwmhiraeth for her constant attention to detail and effort that allowed your article to run on the mainpage at all, and all the work she puts in to allowing DYK to function. I see nothing wrong the swap-- there was nothing to indicate a problem with the alt, and we cannot expect editors to be mind readers as well. FWIW I think ALT1 was more interesting than ALT0. Thanks for the work you both do. Eddie891 Talk Work 22:27, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK error

Please revert your edit to the Ora Nichols hook ([1]), because it renders it misleading. Sources do not present her as "one of" the pioneers; she was unique in her role. Thanks. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:31, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In-universe rule

I promoted Template:Did you know nominations/Mr. Dick because maybe I'm missing something and it was nominated on March 20. It seems to be an in-universe hook which shouldn't be acceptable, but I don't know if it's an exception or something since the nomination has been open for so long with multiple editors participating. SL93 (talk) 05:48, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SL93: Well, it is "in-universe", but it is good and hooky. I expect the matter will be brought up on the DYK discussion page where they care for such things more than I do. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:58, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was about to bring it up there before promoting, but my simple statements on that talk page have made other editors spit venom. I will wait to see if it's brought up there. SL93 (talk) 06:04, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup points error

Hi Cwmhiraeth, I nominated 2021 FA Cup Final for WikiCup points but the bot seems to have not given me the 5 bonus points for size. Would you be able to take a look at it for me please? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 14:46, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@The C of E: I think the reason is that when the hook first appeared on the main page at 00.01 UTC on 15 May, the article size was 3845 B. The article grew rapidly during the course of the day and soon exceeded 5000 B. So the extra 5 points are dubious, but I will allow you them on this occasion. @Cwmhiraeth: Greetings! I saw that you got Sugar promoted to GA back in 2012. Would you mind quickly skimming through and fix the article? It contains some template tags and also has many unreferenced sentences. Cheers. Wretchskull (talk) 20:16, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FAC Review query

Morning Cwmhiraeth,

I hope you're well.

Just a quick query about the review I've done at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Steve Davis/archive1#Oppose from Amakuru. Unfortunately I've found and given details of a balance issue which means I've opposed the nomination, and therefore I've not gone into any more detail on the article at this point. Does that count as a review for the purpose of the WikiCup, or is it too short? Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 09:32, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Amakuru: I got quite worried when I saw this heading. Which of my FAs was under scrutiny now, and would I have to spend hours defending it? However, I see that the enquiry is of quite another nature. I think the review does qualify for WikiCup points; basically it may not be a typical review, but you have spent much time considering the article and its merits and explaining why you think it does not meet the criteria, and your efforts are therefore worthy of points. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:48, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and sorry for giving you a scare with the section heading! 😀  — Amakuru (talk) 09:52, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You recently expanded Serpent eel. However, if you check the page history, you will notice that a massive copyvio was removed back in 2009. I think you might want to revdelete it before it reaches the front page. Thanks. Scorpions13256 (talk) 02:57, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:05, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about WikiCup

I have a Good Article review that was started for William Brooks Close. Once the review concludes, I was planning on nominating it for peer review and then FA. If I'm still in the WikiCup running if its approved for FA, could I still have points added from that featured article? I significantly expanded the article for DYK, I am working on expanding it even more for GA, and FA would require more expansion after that. SL93 (talk) 04:33, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SL93: Yes, the article can qualify for WikiCup points at each of these stages. If it will be your first attempt at a featured article, you may find it good to collaborate with someone experienced in FAC to help get it over the final hurdle. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:11, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's a great idea. I'm just not sure how I would find the best person when that time comes. SL93 (talk) 05:16, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, get it through the GA stage first. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:30, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I only asked now so that I wouldn't ever have to ask it in the future. I guess I'll just wait until the GA finishes and figure it out then instead of now. SL93 (talk) 05:42, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Serpent eel

On 21 May 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Serpent eel, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the serpent eel (example pictured) wriggles backwards into the sandy seabed, leaving only its head visible? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Serpent eel. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Serpent eel), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Cwmhiraeth (talk) 00:02, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've started the review, but there's a query. It suits me to wait, as I don't want this and Template:Did you know nominations/Cut glass (now in Prep 3) coming on top of each other. I'll let you know when it's finished. Cheers, Johnbod (talk) 17:20, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup history log

My addition of Talk:William Brooks Close/GA1 was never added to the WikiCup history log, but I did receive the points. I just thought I should let you know in case it's important. SL93 (talk) 21:31, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SL93: I was just looking at this yesterday, yours is not the only submission missing from the log, and the important thing is that the score is correctly totted up by the bot. I normally check all the ones that are logged, but FAs never appear on the list, and GAs sometimes do not. It would be helpful if @Jarry1250: could do something about it, but he is not always available, and his last edit was in February. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 15:51, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help on an Article!

Hi @Cwmhiraeth !

I am a student who is new to Wikipedia. One of my courses consists of editing and updating the Geophilus Flavus Wikipedia page, I was wondering if you would be able to provide me with some feedback or suggestions to help me improve this page. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

--Witchruby (talk) 03:20, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:00, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Witchruby: Geophilus flavus is a scientific name for a species of centipede, a binomial name, like the scientific name for humans is Homo sapiens. The first part Geophilus is the genus name and has a capital letter, the second part "flavus" is the species name and should have a lowercase "f". The whole name should not be prefaced by the definite article "the", so the first sentence should look like this: "Geophilus flavus is a species of terrestrial, soil-dwelling centipede in the Geophilidae family." Updates on Geophilus Flavus article

Hi User:Cwmhiraeth

I've made the corrections you suggested in your previous message! If you get a chance I'd really appreciate you having a look at the Geophilus flavus article.

Kind thanks,

--Witchruby (talk) 02:18, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few points that struck me.
  • If you take a look at some other similar articles, you will see how sections are usually named and organised. For example I would expect "Cultural significance" to be the last section and "Reproduction" to come rather earlier.
  • I would expect there to be a "Distribution" section.
  • "Like other insects" - they are not insects.
  • "G.flavus are born" - They are not born, they hatch.
  • The citations should come immediately after the text they support, without an intervening space.
  • The opening paragraph, known as the lead, should be a summary of the rest of the article. For example you mention the fossil record in the lead but not in the main body of text.

A goat for you!

Thanks for the help + editing suggestions for the G.flavus article. I'm making the suggested amendments now :)

Reviewer flexibility at DYK

I saw your comment here. In large part I agree, but as someone who has not done a lot of DYK reviewing I'd point you towards my review of Template:Did you know nominations/Romani people in Poland where I made a similar (negative) assessment based on the criteria. There has been significant expansion (3x) on what I consider a difficult and important article outside of the nomination window. I'd love to be able to applaud this new contributor's work, just I was pleased to do at Template:Did you know nominations/Eastern Desert. Given your linked comment, what flexibility does a reviewer have? BusterD (talk) 16:26, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@BusterD: Reviewers are sometimes flexible under the date criterion, but not usually about the length. On 24 April, this version was 1546 B, and users Coreou and RimaB99 have since jointly expanded it to 15 KB, in a period of 30 days. You could try accepting it on that basis, even though it was nominated a few weeks late. Personally I like to be flexible where possible, as such positive feedback might encourage a student editor to stick around. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:24, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've come up with a rationale for what you've suggested above. See this. 11x improvement by two student editors on opposite sides of the globe? That's a great Wikipedia story, even if it took a bit longer than normally allowed. BusterD (talk) 21:19, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@BusterD: That looks fine. Go for it! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:06, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the encouragement. You likely noticed the DYK appeared on Saturday and I gave each editor a half-barnstar and a hearty atta-boy. Thanks for sharing your experience. BusterD (talk) 06:06, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

British Forces Rugby League

Just curious why this was re-promoted just hours after it was removed from the queue, and then ran in the afternoon of the same day? Floquenbeam had raised objections at ERRORS, and I concurred that there were issues with the hook which needed addressing. I came back to have a look at how it was progressing today, and found it had already run. I don't see any fresh tick of approval on the nom, or evidence that the confusing nature of the hook had been resolved. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 16:46, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Because the bit that people objected to was removed. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 16:49, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Since I was pinged: There were several confusing aspects to that hook, but they were all solved by removing the middle portion of the sentence, so I had no objections. I think it happened quickly because there was a date-related aspect, and they wanted to get it into the second set of the day? The original hook was just trying to do too much, IMHO; the final hook was no longer as interesting, but was quite clear. If I thought there was a way to keep the whole interesting hook but reword it, I'd be disappointed we didn't try, but I personally doubt we could have kept it but made it sufficiently clear without making it substantially longer. --Floquenbeam (talk) 16:58, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Floquenbeam and The C of E: that's just it though, the hook was not interesting as written. Especially as it's not even clear without a link what the significance of the "Challenge Cup" is. There was also an issue raised about easter egg links. I just thought when a hook is pulled and questions asked about it, then it's supposed to go through another review first, not just be promoted straight back.  — Amakuru (talk) 17:11, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know enough about the inside-baseball aspects of DYK, you might very well be right. I'm just saying that, FWIW, as the admin who pulled it, I personally have no objection. Fair point about the Easter egg aspect, I'd forgotten about that, but meh. Maybe the imperfection of the repromotion is offset somewhat by the imperfection of the last second pull. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:17, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough then. Apologies for disturbing you all on a fine sunny afternoon.  — Amakuru (talk) 17:19, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a fine sunny afternoon here, it has been drizzling most of the day. I moved the hook along rapidly because it had been listed as a special occasion hook for that day and I thought all the problems had been resolved. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:20, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the drizzle, I just naively assume the whole world is sunny when I see sun outside! 😎 And thanks for the response re the hook, makes sense if it was a special occasion.  — Amakuru (talk) 22:08, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think I made a few mistakes in the Ruigeroeland CCI. Apparently, the infringing material is released under a CC 4.0 license, but I am unsure if the license is compatible with Wikipedia. I'm pretty new to copyright laws. See Hagnagora elianne as an example. All of my other mistakes occurred with articles in the same genus. Scorpions13256 (talk) 20:23, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind. I checked the article for ZooKeys, and it indicates I used the correct license. Scorpions13256 (talk) 20:33, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for letting me know. Ruigeroeland was very prolific, does that apply to many of their articles? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:16, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know just yet. I only come across them when changing taxoboxes to speciesboxes. The reason it is so easy for me to recognize them is that his writing is so distinct. So far, all material copied from ZooKeys has come from one genus. More likely exist. Scorpions13256 (talk) 15:33, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwmhiraeth, Hog Farm, and FredD: Per WP:ERRORS I think the observation might be correct, in that Zenopontonia soror may be a duplicate of Periclimenes soror. You might want to consider a Wikipedia:Merge. — Maile (talk) 00:30, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's a synonym. Zoologists frequently reclassify organisms, and in this case, Periclimenes soror should redirect to Zenopontonia soror, the currently accepted name. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:14, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ineligible Cup submissions

Just a heads up – several of the FAR submissions on this contestant's page are ineligible per the rule: "Nominations submitted more than 14 days after the points were earned … will not be eligible" Apparently, LivingBot appears to only record the first entry in the Cup log for a multiple-entry submission, which is why the other FAR submission went under the radar. —Bloom6132 (talk) 00:19, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@BusterD: Thanks a lot for reviewing, have been lately working on many other presidential campaign articles too! Feel free to rephrase any hook to make it more interesting (if possible). Thanks again! Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 09:23, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with BusterD, a nice article. I was in the process of reviewing the nomination but he beat me to it! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:25, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ALT3? I'd love to wikify (parties) a bit and add Gerald Ford's name, but I think the hook almost works better without it. Would you mind tweaking prep 5 a bit?

I probably could have done this myself but I prefer not to meddle with any well-oiled machine. I'm excited to see my first triple article DYK hook in the prep area. Would it be possible to distance it a bit from the Japanese novel hook? There's this "sea of blue" issue anyway and I'd like to see my hook's three links stand apart from the novel's long link. Thanks in any event. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BusterD (talkcontribs) 08:37, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Promoting prep to queue

Hi, there I was wondering what the method is of letting other admins know that I'm working on promoting a prep from a queue and I had nearly reached the bottom of the list of instructions when the prep emptied itself (i.e. you promoted the set). So, what's best practice? Schwede66 05:05, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: Sorry about that. Some (most?) admins move the set and then check the hooks. I'll undo my move if you like and you can move it when you are ready. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:11, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. No, don't undo. I'm signing off for the day. Schwede66 05:13, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: This is the time of day when I promote a set if I think it will be helpful. It is 6am in the UK and most other admins are in different time zones and safe in bed! I have never clashed on the job with another editor before. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:26, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I’m in New Zealand; suppose I’m the odd one out. Literally. Schwede66 10:09, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
... and nice and Covid-free. I just phoned my dentist to arrange a routine checkup, and was told to try again in September. One of the dentists had just tested positive for Covid, and all the other dentists were self-isolating (and a lot of patients too I imagine). Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:29, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, we had a few weeks of lockdown last year and can probably not even begin to imagine what a pain it is having to deal with this on an ongoing basis. And BJ wanting to drop all restrictions must fall somewhere between insane and genocide; it really is quite unbelievable. Schwede66 19:59, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning! Managed to promote a prep to queue without incident. Other than that, I'm busy moving Olympic hooks into the right prep set. Obviously, I can't move my own hooks; feel free to chip in. :-) Schwede66 06:40, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: OK, will do. 08:56, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Don't get me wrong, I'm a ski jumping fan. Great to see, I'm very glad that also ski jumping is promoted and gets publicity on the main page of english wikipedia. However, I still don't get it with why did this article/photo deserved to be on main page of wikipedia, what single important thing in ski jumping did she achieve? There are so many huge names in ski jumping with countless of historic achievements and records that should be on the main page instead of her? Sportomanokin (talk) 12:43, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

And why ski jumping legends and record holders such as Goldberger, Prevc, Stoch, Nieminen, Małysz, Ruud, Bradl, Steiner, Takanashi and Kasai gets no attention and publicity from main wikipedia site at all? Sportomanokin (talk) 12:43, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sportomanokin: That section of the main page is to showcase featured pictures, images that have been approved as being of exceptional quality. You can see the current featured picture candidates on this page. It would be nice to have featured pictures of the other people you mention, but we don't have the quality pictures of them released under a suitable licence, so we have to make do with the images that are submitted to the featured picture candidate page, even if they are of less famous people things or places! Turgot map POTD

Hi Cwmhiraeth. I noticed that this POTD is organised a normal multiple selection, except that the main page isn't set up to select randomly from the subpages. Do you reckon we could restructure it such that each individual sheet (and the complete map) could each appear on the MP like a regular random-selection POTD? I think we should give the other sheets some prominence as well, and prevent some technical issues that might crop up (e.g. whether the bot might be able to correctly create the protected versions). Also, I came across this general map to the set, which I think we should also add to the POTD for completeness. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 14:20, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ravenpuff: I had some discussion with Amakuru about this POTD. He thought it should work as it is set up now but we need to check the protected version. We can always run the general map on another occasion. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:33, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Quick query regarding a DYK queue

Hi there, I saw the Template:Did you know/Queue/2 with the hook: "... that "I Found a Way", written by Drake Bell and Michael Corcoran, became the theme song for the Drake & Josh show?" and it is likely to end of on the main page by July 12. On the same day Bell is due to be setenced for a crime (I'll spare the details here). I am not sure if that it matter about linking something like that on the same day burst of coverage about negative BLP material matters but I thought it might be something to let you know. Feel free to ignore me if this is overcautious. Regards  Spy-cicle💥  Talk? 02:10, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Spy-cicle: Thank you for the warning. I have moved the hook to Prep7, which means it should be on the main page on July 15. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:20, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Big Time Wrestling" DYK

Hello, Cwmhiraeth. Would you be able to give some advice regarding what procedure is left for {{Did you know nominations/Big Time Wrestling (Boston)}}? I've posted to WT:DYK (a rough timeline can be found there) in the hope of some input from the DYK regulars, but I've had nary a reply ... Sdrqaz (talk) 13:42, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdrqaz: I have approved ALT6a, and now you will just need to wait for someone to promote the hook to the Prep area. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:17, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thank you very much. I've manually added it to the list of approved nominations, as I believe the nomination was stranded when it was approved and unapproved and removed from TT:DYK. If that wasn't the proper procedure and the bot would've worked anyway, please revert me. Sdrqaz (talk) 19:30, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Special occasion holding area

I have another DYK question. Who can (or should) move approved nominations to the special occasion holding area? I have a number of approved nominations that should sit within the Olympics holding area:

Emma Twigg is already in the special occasion holding area. It wasn't clear to me whether I can move the approved nominations myself. I've made specific date suggestions rather than "during the Olympics"; is that something that I should be able to organise within that holding area (e.g. by adding sub-headings with specific dates) so that it's simpler for those who put together the sets to reflect? Schwede66 19:14, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: I suggest you make the request in the comment section of the nomination, stating that it is an Olympic Games nomination. The reviewer can then move it to the special holding area, but if they don't do so, you can move it there yourself. I will move the three you mention above. In general, if the request might be controversial, it would be safer to request it at the DYK discussion page. For example, we had an instance a little while ago where the request was to coincide with the release date of an album, and that was rejected as being promotional. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:34, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66, in general, it's better if someone else moves it -- generally your reviewer -- as the move is generally seen as "someone else thinks this is a reasonable request." IMO it's fine to ask your reviewer to do so. —valereee (talk) 19:36, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yes, I had outlined those requests in the comment sections of the nominations. Thanks for moving them. I'll ask reviewers in future should this arise again. Schwede66 19:53, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RFPP

I saw your decline at here. To be more specific, the account in question is an obvious sock who is only rehashing and edit warring over already rejected and discussed edits per this discussion. To say that others should rehash the discussion, just because a sock registered one day ago only with the aim to disrupt this page, would contradict WP:DENY. The WP:BURDEN is on the sock to justify his edits on talk page than demand others to justify revert of his BLP violation and original research. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 05:51, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Aman.kumar.goel: The article in question is List of converts to Islam from Hinduism. It currently has eleven entries, and the other editor added another thirty or so, which you have removed. Some of these probably meet the criteria for conversions that I see mentioned on Loveall.human's talk page. We do not protect pages just so that a particular version remains in Wikipedia WP:OWN. The editor concerned has asked for clarification of your reversion on your talk page, so perhaps you could reply. You mention WP:BURDEN above. Every entry that you have removed in your reversion has at least one citation. The article talk page would probably be the best place for discussion about what should be included in the article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:20, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just the addition of a citation isn't enough, but it should meet WP:VERIFY, and the source must explicitly state "x converted into x from x". Nearly all of the entries fail it. If the person is alive, then he/she must state it per WP:BLPCAT. None of the entries being inserted by the sock meets these criterias. But this sock is not likely to understand that, thus we need to deny their recognition and protect the page to avoid any further disruption. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 07:22, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cwmhiraeth, I had fun creating this article. Do you think it is suitable for DYK? Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:30, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think so. There is a rule about copying text from another article. This is covered in supplementary rule A5: "New text seven days old or less can only count toward the 1500 character minimum in one article; if it is duplicated in other nominated new articles, it is ignored for the purpose of character count. If some of the text in a nominated article was copied from another Wikipedia article, and the copied text is more than seven days old, then the copied text must be expanded fivefold as if the copied text had been a separate article." So I reckon it passes that test.
You could have a two article hook for the Duke of Sussex and Acton Green, London with a hook such as "... the Duke of Sussex has been providing drinks in Acton Green for over 100 years?" Or perhaps you had other ideas for a single article hook. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:54, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator review request

Sorry to bother you about this but WP:CONDUCTDISPUTE advises that an independent administrator be asked to review a case before escalation to WP:ANI. Would you please take a look at Talk:Unicode character property#Code point ranges and give us your opinion. You don't need to understand or even know about the abstruse technical details that provoked the dispute: the issue now is a deliberate and conscious accusation of bad faith by one editor of another. I am not directly involved in the dispute though I am now wp:INVOLVED to the extent of having asked the first editor to withdraw their extraordinary and precipitate allegation. I can write up the case as if it were being put to ANI but I felt it best to begin in this format so as not to 'frame' the question. Note that I suspect that neither of the editors involved have English as first language but are clearly competent in its use. Please advise. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:20, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwmhiraeth and Deepfriedokra: thank you both. As an editor since 2005, I have never had cause to seek this kind of admin assistance – or seen so precipitate a reaction over a really quite trivial choice of words that a normal BRD discussion would easily have resolved. I have never seen a content dispute go nuclear like that on the very first change to the first editor's holy writ. Most people just have good clean edit wars! Yes, an edit note would have been polite but, given the reaction, I doubt it would have made a difference.
C, I just happen to have your name from when you did a redaction request for me. I am totally content with you passing it to a specialist.
D, I see that the subject hasn't come across the phrase "if you get yourself in a hole, stop digging". I'm afraid it looks like this one has a few more miles to run. I shall watch from the wings. Yuck indeed. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 13:07, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Franz Harnoncourt

Franz Harnoncourt is now in prep 4, with a hook that gives him a dish-washer career, from salesperson to CEO, while almost the opposite is true: even the family crown prince for CEO (and lawyer with a degree, and international experience at the time) had to start as a salesperson. If we can't use the original hook, could we at least say that he was CEO for decades? And - but less important - would it be very difficult to run that in the second set of his birthday (2 Aug) instead of a day later? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:31, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Gerda. I see it's a goldenrod, but not the same species as I see growing on rough grassy places round here. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:02, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm always surprised to learn how many species there are, - thanks for help with that also. If you can identify the plants better, you are welcome to make moves and add better categories. It's close to blooming right now as I can see from my desk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:30, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are presumably referring to the garden goldenrod which grows perhaps 1.5 metres tall which also grows in the UK, in what we call a herbaceous border. I was referring to Solidago virgaurea, a closely related wild plant which grows round here in rough bushy places, on grassy banks and among rocks, and is only 0.5 metres high. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:01, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think "ours" may be Solidago canadensis. - Today: 2 interesting DYK (I think), sadly 2 who died (on top of 2 from Poland yesterday), and a concert in which Daniel Barenboim just played piano, - and afterwards he and the orchestra received last year's prize (pictured). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:50, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank for good DYK reviewing in August! Bot miscalculation

Hi Cwm, I think the Wikicup bot might have miscalculated my points for Intervilles. It's on 5 wikipedias (including English) so I think it should get the multiplier? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:49, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@The C of E: Actually, the bot is correct in this instance. It looks at how many interwikis there were at the beginning of the contest, 1 January 2021, and at that time there were four, because the Ukrainian version was created later that month. However, I will over-ride the bot on this occasion. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:23, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[User:Scope creep] is engaging in harassment

Hi Cwm, [User:Scope creep] is engaging in harassment. He has been deleting content edited by me. I tried to engage in a dialog but instead of providing constructive feedback he simply reverted edits and now has asked you to block me. Is this the new Wikipedia policy? Shoot first, then ask questions? This content was around for years and did include some references. Not everything can be traced back to "references". If every sentence needed a reference 90% of the Wikipedia would need to be deleted. Please advise.147.86.223.240 (talk) 11:01, 6 August 2021 (UTC) August 6, 2021[reply]

I think we are talking about the article Alexander Repenning here. Instead of just adding back the paragraph that has been removed, I suggest you add back a single sentence at a time, each cited by a reference to a reliable source. For example in the sentence "Repenning has served as advisor to the National Academy of Sciences, the European Commission, The Japanese Ministry of Education, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the National Science Foundation", you need references for each of these facts. If there are no sources for these facts, the information is not suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:53, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Insect flight

On 7 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Insect flight, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that unlike most other insects, dragonflies have direct flight, the muscles being attached directly to the wing bases (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Insect flight. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Insect flight), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Hello Cwmhiraeth

Can we do something about what's happening in: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Umm_Qirfa&action=history

Although you put protection on the page (Thanks). User Ratnahastin was still able to remove reliable sources and replace them with unreliable ones. How can we stop such vandalism?

Even the other user have stated that they are deleting reliable sources to fit their agenda.

Please discuss this content dispute on the article talk page. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:56, 8 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Cwmhiraeth:. I was just checking DYK Queue 2. One of the hooks that I reviewed is there, and the editor who promoted the article to GA and nominated it for DYK, has got their account renamed due to certain issues. Don't you think his/her username should be fixed there? I'm referring to this DYK nomination and the new username of the editor is Htanaungg. @Iainmacintyre: OK, I have rescued it and it is now on the approved nominations page. Flamenco

Hi! A couple of questions. Why is the article Flamenco indefinitely fully protected? How do you plan on proceeding with this page over the following months? Who is responsible for gatekeeping its content? The measure seems a little bit extreme considering there is discussion on talk page. Let us know when you plan to lift it otherwise seeking consensus or discussing will be a waste of time for fellow editors. Thanks. Cristodelosgitanos (talk) 12:05, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I fully protected the page for one week because of edit warring. The restriction was due to end at 05:02, 26 August 2021, and a bot then usually removes the page protection symbol at top right. WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Rgalo10

Regarding your RFPP decline, just want to alert you to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Rgalo10 which is a long-term abuse case. I've ECP'd the two pages. Should additional pages show up on RFPP related to this case, I would encourage you to be aggressive about page protection, since that's the only thing that works here. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:59, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I know nothing about Rgalo10, but it was curious how one new account was adding information and another, obviously linked, was removing it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:06, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I guess that's how he gets his jollies. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:36, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't look much like the Rgalo10 case. In Rgalo, there were so many socks, blocking them was pointless. This case is just a few accounts. My personal opinion is that blocking is still an effective tool here, and hold page protection in reserve until blocking is no longer effective. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:35, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Cwmhiraeth,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

DYK back to two sets a day

Cwmhiraeth, I hope that even though we have five Queues filled, you'll be able to promote one more once this morning, now that we're back to two sets a day. They disappear so fast! Also, since it's the weekend, we may be able to get more preps filled; there are only two that have just been opened. Thanks for anything you can do. Hello, I requested to have the article protected. However, my request was reverted. The article is being constantly edited by a user with unreliable sources. Although the editor is citing page nos from the book itself, the narrative being pushed by the user is not accurate and grossly misleading. I have attempted to 'talk' with this user on his talk page. Unfortunately, my communiation was removed by said user and user continues to undo my edit. It's important that the page is accurately displaying the correct information. I am unsure of what other steps I could take.

@Williamcarbone: Firstly, you need to sign your posts by using four tildes (~~~~). It is apparent that you and user MrKnowItAll-TheOG differ as to what content should be in the article. Please discuss the issues on the article's talk page so that a consensus can be reached. I declined to protect the article because both of you are autoconfirmed and therefore semi-protection would have had no effect. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:22, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Very short on bios at the moment

Cwmhiraeth, we have only 16 bios out of 73 approved noms, less than 1 in 4, so it would be best to hold it down to two bios per set until the ratio improves. I'm going to move a couple of the bios out of your latest set into another prep to help keep us from running out; I hope you don't mind. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:17, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please clarify why you locked the article Kate (film)? I realize I was coming close to edit warring, but the disruptive editor was a named user who didn't and still doesn't understand that changing the image file format from JPG to PNG was entirely unnecessary. The disruptive editor has not repeated their earlier edit but they have unfortunately taken the locking of the article as endorsement of their behavior.[3] -- 109.78.193.127 (talk) 12:10, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I semi-protected the article for one week, not because I agreed with your arguments or with the other editor's arguments, but because the repeated reversions were disruptive. This was not ideal, because it prevented you from editing, but not the other editor. I commend you for the fact that you have sensibly started a discussion about the issues on the article's talk page. However, there are over six million articles on the English Wikipedia, and when you find yourself disagreeing with another editor on a content issue, you would be well advised to forget about winning and losing the argument, but just move on to a different article. Happy editing! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:52, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you for clarifying. Locking the article isn't a problem, it can wait. The hostile editor making presumptions could be a problem later though. It is unfortunate but understandable that due to the sheer size of Wikipedia that the primary response is to lock the article (I prefer flagged editing that requires confirmation but that's not important). With hindsight I could have handled it better and I should have contacted the person who uploaded the original image sooner.
I edited that article last week, and the week before that, and if I find good enough sources I can easily wait until the article is unlocked the week after. Later. -- 109.78.193.127 (talk) 18:18, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

October songs

Thank you for all your work around DYK! Today: #1700, and I uploaded more images, mostly blue and green, for hope. The creator is blocked, and I'd like to see that change, but feel I don't speak a language understood on noticeboards. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:42, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
