Rush helped influence many progressive metal bands.

The following is a list of progressive metal artists, bands and groups. Note, this list contains some bands that at least at some point during their career played progressive metal. Rooted in the early 1980s, the genre fused mellow progressive rock with a heavy metal aesthetic.[1] It is known for its complex song structures, unusual time signatures, lengthy songs and often using concept albums.[2] For these very reasons, progressive metal bands rarely get heard on major radio stations and videomusic channels. Some bands incorporate jazz fusion to their works, and is often termed technical metal.[3]

Formed in 1981, Queensrÿche are one of the bands that helped popularize the genre.

Later on, many extreme metal bands began to experiment and developed an array of progressive metal fusions with other genres, including death metal, black metal, thrash metal and avant-garde.[3] It also received a lot of experimentation and became common elements in post-metal and sludge metal bands.[4]

Some notable progressive metal bands include Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Symphony X and more extreme acts such as Opeth, Atheist and Voivod.
