The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010, commonly known as E3 2010, will be the 16th Electronic Entertainment Expo held. The event is set to take place on June 14, 15, 16, and 17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. E3 is an annual trade show for the computer and video games industry presented by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). It is used by many video game developers to present their upcoming games and game-related hardware.

Layout

E3 2010 will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center with the show occupying the South and West Halls as well as the first floor.

West Hall

Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo will have booths which are directly opposite of each other. Other notable developers and publishers located on this floor are Atlus, Atari, Bethesda, Sony Online Entertainment and Capcom.

South Hall

The hall has three types of booths: large, medium and small. The large booths are occupied by Square Enix, MTV Games, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Disney Interactive Studios, and Electronic Arts. The medium booths are occupied by Sega, Konami, THQ, Warner Bros. Interactive, and Take-Two Interactive. The small booths are occupied by Namco Bandai and Tecmo Koei.[1]

Microsoft will be holding its press conference on June 13 and 14, 2010 before the start of the actual E3 event. It will be divided into two parts with the first part concentrating on Project Natal to be held on June 13, 2010 and the Xbox 360 Media Briefing to be held on June 14, 2010.[16]

Nintendo has confirmed that they will showcase their newly announced Nintendo 3DS, a handheld gaming console that is the successor to its current Nintendo DS series of handhelds. Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo 3DS will be playable. [18] In addition, Nintendo plans to showcase software for the Wii Vitality Sensor[19], as well as the latest game in the Legend of Zelda series, which will be compatible with Wii MotionPlus.[7] Nintendo also hopes to have Pikmin 3 on display at their press conference, but there has yet to be confirmation.

Sony plans to further showcase the PlayStation Move and its compatible games as well as announce the worldwide release of firmware for the PS3 to fully support stereo 3D gaming and movies. President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Jack Tretton, has said that they "will absolutely bring the heat, there's a lot to talk about".[21] Sony is also set to reveal new hardware at E3.[22]

Notable appearances

  • Hideo Kojima
Hideo Kojima, series director of the Metal Gear Solid series, will be making an appearance at E3 at either Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft's press conference.[24] Following that he would begin a world tour promoting his new game, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.[25]
  • Tetsuya Nomura
Tetsuya Nomura, director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII and series director of Kingdom Hearts, will be making an appearance at E3. In addition he is also expected to have a business meeting with Square Enix's Osaka-based Product Development Group 5 which recently worked on Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. This was revealed by Shinji Hashimoto, a Japanese game producer for Square Enix, on his Twitter account.[26]
  • Other notable appearances
Japanese game developers, Hideki Kamiya, Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami are all going to be in attendance of E3 2010.[27] While American game director, David Jaffe head of Eat Sleep Play will also be attending.[28]

Pre-E3 hype

  • Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts Chief Executive Officer, John Riccitiello, has billed E3 2010 as being the "Biggest and Best Ever [E3 Expo]". He also adds that “All the best games and all the best developers will be together in LA to unveil new titles and celebrate the creativity and new technology that makes gaming so much fun.”[29]
  • Valve Corporation
Valve Corporation will be unveiling a "surprise" at E3 2010, they were originally set to hold an event regarding Portal 2 on June 14, 2010. The Portal 2 event was cancelled on June 1, 2010 with the "surprise" as its replacement.[30]
  • Square Enix
Square Enix will be unveiling a new title in the Kingdom Hearts series, this was revealed by series director Tetsuya Nomura in an interview with Game Informer.[31]
  • New game announcements
Electronic Arts, Capcom, Tecmo Koei, Square Enix, Sega and Ubisoft have confirmed that they would each be unveiling their own "surprises" at E3 2010. This was revealed by Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, which conducted a poll among the publishers. However, Namco Bandai and Bethesda Softworks refused to reveal if they were unveiling surprises or not instead opting to say that it was a secret.[23]
