    Background is blue

Wikipedia's background on articles is suddenly a light blue color. What is going on? — AMK152 (tc) 00:47, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is a bug in the latest version of Google Chrome which shows blue background if the browser zoom level is set below 100%. Reset the zoom to 100% with Ctrl+0 or adjust it with Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Arabic language

why i cant find arabic language in most of the articles in this great site? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.173.228.104 (talk) 01:42, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Arabic Wikipedia is at http://ar.wikipedia.org/. It has fewer articles than the English Wikipedia so many English articles will have no matching Arabic article. Wikipedia is written by volunteer editors and there are more who know English. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:51, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody, with no editing history, has slapped an articles for creation tag on the above article I am putting together in userspace. Can I simply remove the tag, (& leave a note for the editor who inserted it), or does this create a problem? I'm dilatory by nature, & some articles I've started lurk in userspace for a long time before I transfer them, btw. TheLongTone (talk) 08:26, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just take it off. I find explaining stuff to IPs with no history to be a waste of bytes. Roger (talk) 08:36, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Bot request...

I've been left the following message by a bot: "Hi! I would like to inform you that the Articles for Creation submission which was previously located here: User:Hchc2009/Sandbox4 has been moved to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Sandbox4, this move was made automatically and doesn't affect your article, if you have any questions please ask on my talk page! Have a nice day. ArticlesForCreationBot (talk) 08:59, 9 April 2012 (UTC)" - it hasn't been requested by me, and the sandbox work isn't finished, so I'd be grateful if someone could switch this off. The talk page for the Bot leads here. Many thanks. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:27, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was moved because of [1]. Special:Contributions/207.216.236.146 shows several such taggings so it may be an odd form of disruption if it wasn't you or on your request. I have reverted and moved back. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:24, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers - much appreciated. Hopefully, and assuming good faith, its someone trying to be helpful by adding the tags... Hchc2009 (talk) 13:41, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have sorted out the existing tags and asked the IP to stop at User talk:207.216.236.146#Other users draft. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:49, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Talk pages and images of references

Hi, I was wondering whether it is allowed to upload images of small sections of references from books/articles to talk pages as a means of proving what the references exactly say. In cases where references are grossly misquoted or distorted or when there is a need to provide comprehensive presententations of arguments, this will greatly help the discussions. --SriSuren (talk) 09:35, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    what does "bar" mean?

    Hello,

I'm trying to find out what the instruction "bar:" means in an article.

There is an example in the International Securities Identification Number article.

    the code is:

    bar:International Securities Identification Number

    Thanks for any tip.

Richard — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rgnewbury (talkcontribs) 10:03, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you be more specific about where you see this? I just did a text search for the word "bar" and didn't find any instance of those three letters in that order. Dismas|(talk) 10:10, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Thanks for coming back so quickly. If you go to the article I quoted (International Securities Identification Number) and view the history, you'll see a change on 2 April which added the line. qhb (talk) 10:16, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This edit? That is just a bot adding a link to the corresponding article in the Bavarian Wikipedia. In this case "bar" is the shorthand for the Bavarian Wikipedia. Just like "en" stands for the English language Wikipedia, "de" for the German, "fr" for the French etc. etc. --Saddhiyama (talk) 10:20, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) It's there at the top of the list of links to the different language versions. bar: goes to the Boarisch (Bavarian) Wikipedia. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:22, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See more at Help:Interlanguage links. All language codes are at meta:List of Wikipedias. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:13, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
thanks everyone. I had assumed (wrongly) that only ISO language letters were used in language versions. qhb (talk) 08:44, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
bar is in ISO 639-3 at ISO 639:b but not in the shorter ISO 639 variants ISO 639-1 and ISO 639-2. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:27, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Traditional Chinese pages containing Simplified Chinese

For the traditional Chinese version of Wikipedia for Hong Kong and Macau, there are constantly some characters being simplified Chinese. Please try to rectify it for these are lots of inconsistencies in those pages. We do not use simplified Chinese in Hong Kong and Macau.

    Lhyeason (talk) 10:09, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks but, this is the English Wikipedia. Few of us go to the Chinese language Wikipedias, for obvious reasons. You might want to, though. If there is a problem with the rendering of Chinese characters in an English Wikipedia article (i.e., the Chinese characters denoting the name, for example), the best way to deal with that is to drop a note on the article's talk page--Wehwalt (talk) 10:47, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has automatic tools for converting between traditional and simplified characters, and there may be errors in these. You'll get better information at Chinese Wikipedia. --Colapeninsula (talk) 14:37, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    TARGET attribute

I would like to use the TARGET attribute of <a> tags to open an external link in a new window. Wiki doesn't have <a> tags, but can I still use TARGET? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.64.10.104 (talk) 12:09, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not permit this. If you have another wiki in mind and can change settings or install extensions then see mw:Manual:$wgExternalLinkTarget or mw:Extension:LaunchExternal. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:27, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any external link (including Commons) already opens in a new tab for me. Not sure if that's a browser setting or a WP setting though. Either way though, it's best to let the user decide how they want their links served up instead of changing it in just the article that you're working on because you feel it should be one certain way. Dismas|(talk) 12:57, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets has the option "Open external links in a new tab/window". Browsers also have settings for default behaviour. Wikipedia does not permit links to open in a new tab or window if the user hasn't chosen it. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:47, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Multiple references from same source

In Charles Robert Cockerell the main editor has cited numerous page numbers from the same source, each as a separate reference. Whilst this is clearly very precise, IMHO it gives an over-long references section, as 47 of the references are to the same book. I know how to group all the identical references (e.g. page 14) together, but I wonder if there is a neater or easier way of handling such a scenario, or whether grouping the references together, e.g. pages 1-10 or chapter 1 (if you have the book), would be preferable. How do I allow people to search for my article by full-name

How do I allow people to search for my article by full-name (Committee on Sustainability Assessment) or acronym (COSA)? Right now, you can search the article by full name but I also want it to show up if someone types COSA into the search box. Thanks for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jd327 (talkcontribs) 16:06, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's called a re-direct. Take a look first and see if there is already an article called COSA. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:11, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Since there was, I created what's called a disambiguation page, which tells people where to go if they are looking for Circles of Support and Accountability, or Committee on Sustainability Assessment, or either of the towns called Cosa. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:17, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Richardville house

    Richardville House (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

The Richardville House page has a photo of the house in Huntington and as the marketing coordinator of the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society dba The History Center, I, this afternoon, uploaded a photo of the house at 5705 Bluffton Road as this is the house that was recently named a National Historic Landmark.

While the property in Huntington was owned by the Richardville family, it is confusing to have a photo of just that house when the information on the page also refers to the Bluffton Road property.

If both photos are on the page, with proper reference as to location, this will make it clearer to the reader as to which properties are which.

    Nancy McCammon-Hansen Marketing Coordinator — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.223.115.121 (talk) 17:45, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see no photos in that article at all. Are you looking at the current version of it? Also, where did you upload the photo to? Assuming its copyright situation is satisfactory, you can certainly add it to the article. --ColinFine (talk) 17:06, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Don Peake

Hello, My name is Don Peake, and I am the guitarist who created the introduction for Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On". The personnel information in Wikepedia is incorrect. I have the original union contract which shows me, Don Peake and Arthur Wright as the guitars. The new Motown cd does show me as guitar. How can I correct this error? Thank You, Don Peake — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.120.89.110 (talk) 17:54, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The contract would be a Primary source; a Secondary or Tertiary Source would be preferable; can you point out a Reliable Source (RS) that reported the correct information? Dru of Id (talk) 18:56, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with the contract is not that it is a primary source. Primary sources are fine. The problem with the contract is that it is an unpublished source. However, the liner notes from the recording are a perfectly usable primary source, and are perfectly acceptable for who plays on the record. If the liner notes say he plays on it, then we can say so too. --Jayron32 19:57, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Dashes

Is there a rule regarding in which situations to use

    &ndash;

and in which situations to use the – symbol directly? Am I allowed to change it in an article from one to the other? -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 19:12, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Start here: Wikipedia:MOS#Dashes RudolfRed (talk) 19:19, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Could I ask a supplementary follow-up? The instructions linked by RudolfRed specify inserting an en dash (for example) either by typing &ndash; thus: –, or by using the character insert menu below the edit box. Through long habit I usually type en and em dashes by using alt+0150 or alt+0151, thus: –, —. Is this impermissible in article space? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.197.66.34 (talk) 20:11, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's perfectly fine when it works on your computer. It gives exactly the same result as using the character insert menu. It's one of the methods at Wikipedia:How to make dashes#Long explanation. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:25, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, PrimeHunter. I must admit that I haven't yet tackled tracking down and reading all of the copious guidance material, which is why, although I've been contributing to the RefDesks and Article Talk pages, and making very minor Article Edits, for at least 5 years, I haven't felt ready to register a User Account. Thank you. Basically, I just want to know how to edit them better then erased them and etc.--Jessica A Bruno (talk) 18:43, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the past I've seen you post questions at the reference desks and then erase them before anyone has a chance to answer them. When you post a question to those desks, it creates a section on the page. You can edit that particular section by clicking on the "Edit" link to the right of the question. You can change the wording or whatever else you want to do without having to erase the entire question. Is this what you're referring to? If not, could you tell us what article you've edited and we can look and see how you could have edited it better? Dismas|(talk) 18:56, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Removing age from Background info.

    Hello guys:

I figure that wikipedia automatically calculates age based on date of birth. I find this kind of info "December 1, 1945 (age 66)" redundant, and would like to remove "(age 66)". Is there a way to accomplish that, please?

Thanks, Magazine 23:07, 9 April 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Magazine1212 (talkcontribs)

Many people are not quick at math. I would hazard that a significant percentage of readers, given a birthdate, would need at least 30 seconds to translate that into an age and unless actively looking for an age, would not even bother and so not be provided with the information. This is all the more true where there are dates of birth and death in an article so people do not have the current date as a familiar terminus for the calculation. Anyway, these are usually automatically calculated by templates such as {{Death date and age}}.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:30, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That would be part of Template:Infobox person in most cases I believe. You could bring this up for discussion on the talk page there, although my instinct is that the consensus would be to keep it, not everyone is great at mental math and people often visit pages to find out how old individuals are (I know I do). MyNameWasTaken (talk) 23:32, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's part of Template:Birth date and age and it's been discussed in the past. You're welcome to bring it up again, though I personally don't see it changing anytime soon. Dismas|(talk) 02:49, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How can I persuade my teachers that Wikipedia is a reliable source?

How can I persuade my teachers that Wikipedia is a reliable source?

My teachers all say that anyone can write those articles, which is why they think Wikipedia is not a reliable source.

I like Wikipedia because it has a lot of great information. I find good info at Wikipedia, but since I can't use Wikipedian info (haha), I have to find other websites with that info, which can sometimes take hours.

My teachers do say that we should use .org websites, but when I say Wikipedia is a .org website, they just say what I said before: anyone can post those articles.

Please help me! Wikipedia has the info that I can not find on other websites. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.107.96 (talk) 01:09, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One value of Wikipedia is its requirement that everything be referenced to credible, reliable sources. While there are times when articles will (hopefully briefly) contain garbage, those links to the sources will still be very valuable. Tell your teachers that you're using it as a stepping stone to better sources. HiLo48 (talk) 01:17, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly: you shouldn't try, because we don't claim to be a reliable source (which isn't to say we don't try to be reliable). Any website with reader-generated content, like ours, is always going to be prone to occasional errors, and downright vandalism - though obviously we try to keep this to a minimum. What we can do though is tell you where to find reliable sources. When you look at an article, check the sources it cites - these are the places you should really be looking for reliable material. Of course, no single source is going to be right about everything all of the time, if something seems odd, check it against other sources. For what it's worth, independent research has shown that for some subjects, Wikipedia is actually better than say the Encyclopaedia Britannica - but all the same, you shouldn't be using it as the main source for school work - use it as a tool to help you find what you're looking for. Vandalized article

A page about me found under "Peter Meineck" has been repeatedly vandalized. I have raised this issue before and you have taken down the offending material. Now I find that on April 6 the entire article was rewritten in the first person with insulting comments and statements that I am dishonest. I have cut the entire article but fear this person will only post more inflammatory remarks. I understand and respect that Wikipedia is open source but this is causing harm to my reputation and my family. I would greatly appreciate it if this page could be deletd. I did not ask to appear in Wiikipedia and once I did. Edited and updated information believing it was for the common good, however this vandalism is disturbing to me, slanderous and factually incorrect.

    civility question

What's the usual first option to use when the civility on a page has degraded past the usual tense atmosphere of opponents in a somewhat polarized article? In other words, I feel another editor's comments have been getting more aggressive lately and have finally crossed a line, referring to the fact that he felt that an edit I made, was most disappointing and "not to mention extremely stupid" this editor has been banned from this article on more than one occasion, including an instance of a ban lasting 1 year, for failing to assume AGF, incivility, etc. Now he has threatened escalation, and within a couple of hours, an editor with a similar POV (Also with bans lasting over a year on this topic) who hasn't said anything on the talk page for over two weeks shows up and starts accusing me of deliberately lying. I think we need some outside help with the article to keep the atmosphere from imploding further. Suggestions? -- Maelefique(talk) 06:37, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the above article section, is there a way to make it so the numbers created by #s continue in sequence after breaks in the table? Thanks--Jac16888 Talk 10:32, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

{{Div col}} and {{Columns-list}} can do it without using a table but they are not supported by all browsers. Internet Explorer 9 and earlier will display it without columns but still with correct numbering. Are the numbers somehow official or common? If not then a bulleted list with * instead of # would be better. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:13, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone delete an article written about themselves? Can someone request that certain information about themselves be removed from Wikipedia?

    Leaf Green Warrior (talk) 12:17, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Relationship between the subject, the article, and Wikipedia. Subjects cannot delete articles or control their content but they can make requests. If a subject is only borderline notable then a request for deletion from the subject may be the deciding factor. A very notable subject will not be deleted. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:43, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They can ask for defamatory content to be removed if there is not a reliable source for it, but if the source is reliable, such content usually stays. Watchlist feature addition

Hi, i have a request for a feature to be discussed. When we click on the watchlist we can see recent changes or everything. Could we also have the option for being able to "unwatch" articles in our recent changes list without having to go to the article or to the complete watchlist as we curently have to. This would save quite a bit of time and it wouldn't have to be forced on everyone if it's added as an option like twinkle is in our preferences. Thanks Jenova20 14:48, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Search for Otto-configuration

I found under Otto configuration a scientifically well written article, but I (Prof.em. The historical development, ordered by date of submission of the articals is as follows: 1) A.Otto, Eine neue Methode der Anregung nichtstrahlender Oberflächen –Plasma-Schwingungen, (A new method to excite nonradiative surface plasma oscillations) phys.stat.sol.26,K99(1968), received February 13(1968) 2) A. I recently edited a biography, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Siler including updated external links. They all appeared typed in black but on the saved page they appear in blue and purple. How can I make consistent in color? George Cabe (talk) 17:41, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Even though the external link shown as black when you edited the page, they are really hyperlinks, which turn blue once stored. Once a person clicks on the hyperlink, it will turn purple to show they have viewed it at least once. Once a browser's cookies/cache have been deleted, that purple link will revert back to blue. The deletion notice should specify why it was proposed for deletion. From the notice on the article, THE_GENESIS_CODE:_God_Has_Spoken apparently does not meet the notability standards for books, as described here: WP:NBOOK. There should also be a discussion at WP:AFD, but I don't see it. RudolfRed (talk) 18:57, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's no AfD discussion because it was up for deletion with WP:PROD, which doesn't have an WP:AfD deletion discussion. In any event, the article was deleted by an administrator as being advertising. Alopian -- please do read WP:NBOOK. If you can bring proof that the work meets the requirements for inclusion, it can be be re-created. However, winning honorable mention at a city book fair does not meet Wikipedia's requirements. Are you using Google Chrome? Google Chrome users seem to experience a light blue background when zoomed to less than 100%. To get rid of the blue, reset your scroll to 100% by pressing Ctrl+0. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 21:15, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is a bug in the latest version of Google Chrome which shows blue background if the browser zoom level is set below 100%. Reset the zoom to 100% with Ctrl+0 or adjust it with Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-. RudolfRed (talk) 21:16, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with what Zippy and Rudolf have written. I stumbled across the same problem a couple of days ago, and thought something had happened to Wikipedia. Then I accidentally fixed it, when I caught Ctrl+0. Google Chrome is full of technical glitches in their latest "upgrade" version. Whenever a chrome user logs into say Facebook or Wikipedia, and checks the "remember me" option; chrome for some reason doesn't recognise the "remember" option and you end up re-logging in if you leave the page and re-visit hours later. Category tree viewing

Is there a way to view a category's directory tree in a single-page presentation to avoid having to dig down into each subcategory manually and tediously? Thank you. — O'Dea (talk) 21:29, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for replying and for your help, PrimeHunter. I appreciate it. When I have a bit more energy (tenacity), I may try to find out who maintains and develops these features so I can inquire if it would be a small or big change to add an option to display the tree in an open, or expanded, state. That page, Help:Category#Displaying category trees and page counts, was quite interesting. Thanks again. — O'Dea 08:54, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

    Category tree viewing, another limitation

The Special:CategoryTree facility is limited when asked to list articles in a category that contains more than 200 articles, such as Category:Roads in England. Using Special:CategoryTree with the "all pages" option selected displays the first 200 articles and, 1. Does not show at the end of the list that there are more in the category, so they remain unknown to the viewer and, 2. There is no link such as "Next 200" to allow the viewer to continue to the rest of the list (some overlap with point 1 here). I am documenting this for the record in this discussion. — O'Dea 20:46, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

    New at editing

I am editing a client's page (first time) and received two citations. I need help to correct the page and to have the citations removed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Siler

This biography, at present, does not merit online citations but merely the reference list referring to articles authored by Todd Siler or about him. How can I improve the references section?

As to the citation regarding the external links, are there too many? Which ones are considered not acceptable?

Shall I move some of them to references?

I appreciate your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by George Cabe (talkcontribs) 22:16, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some pages you might look to for help would be WP:Referencing for beginners and the guidelines for verifiable sources. MyNameWasTaken (talk) 22:43, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please review Wikipedia's policy on conflict of interest editing. If Mr. Siler is your client, you may be unable to edit this article in a manner that maintains a neutral point of view. MyNameWasTaken (talk) 22:48, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When you say "This biography ... does not merit online citations" you misunderstand the purpose and practice of Wikipedia. Anything in an article that does not have an inline citation (not necessarily to an online source) may be removed from the article by anybody. An article which has no inline citations fails to establish that the subject is notable, and so the article may be deleted at any time.
Normally, if you are writing an article, your first priority is to put inline citations to reliable sources in it; but if you are writing it about a client, your first priority is to read WP:COI and follow its guidelines carefully. --ColinFine (talk) 10:13, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think that by "citations" he means the templated tags for advertisement, reference style, etc (like a traffic citation is a bad thing). --Colapeninsula (talk) 10:19, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For more information on external links, see Wikipedia:External links. Generally there should be few external links. Permissible links are either to the subject's official website(s) or to reliable sources with significant additional information. There is clearly no need to link three pages on the same website, and posting a link to a Google search is not useful either. --Colapeninsula (talk) 10:19, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed with vs. variable width templates

Earlier today I posed a question at Talk:WP:CO-OP about how to make a template variable width as opposed to fixed-width, and it was suggested to ask here. The template in question is the WikiProject's Talk page template, which can be found at WP:CO-OP#Talk page template. The width is now fixed at 600px, which means it usually shows up narrower than other templates. That it is not a transcluded template may be part of the issue. Does anyone here know whether there's an easy fix, or whether it should be transcluded? In either case, is anyone here willing to fix this, or point me in the direction of someone who could? Thanks, WWB Too (talk) 22:25, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to add additional header lines to a long table

The "vampire traits" page has very wide, very long tables, with very undescriptive entries (a lot of "yes" and "no" entries and so forth). This makes it hard to follow whether a particular line is saying that, say, True Blood vampires can be harmed by garlic vs beheading. And I'd imagine there are other "list" articles that have a similar problem--for example, the "solubility table" entry has something of the same problem even though it's broken up into individual letters of the alphabet.

It would be nice if there was a way to automatically repeat the header every 20 or so entries, so that on those large tables, people don't get lost. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.147.138.9 (talk) 22:57, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The tables in List of vampire traits in folklore and fiction are sortable. Repeated header rows do not go well together with sortable tables because the header rows inside the table do not stay in place when the table is sorted. A non-sortable table can have repeated header rows inserted manually. It is not automatic so if content rows are inserted or removed and a fixed number of content rows between header rows is wanted then the header rows must be moved manually. It is inappropriate to discuss a person's religious affiliation in an article unless it is relevant to why they are notable, or something that they themselves have made a public point of. Since there does not appear to be any mention of his religion in the article itself, it is unlikely that it could be appropriate to insert it into the infobox even if the template allowed it. --ColinFine (talk) 10:18, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Wikipedians, There is an IP user who has started to breach 1RR restrictions as set out per WP:NCMAC. The user has been advised twice not to edit the reference to "Macedonia" to "Republic of Macedonia" on articles such as Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and also Template:Eurovision Song Contest 2012. What strikes me as odd, is the IP has accused myself of making up this ruling over naming conventions, when in fact it was a ArbComs decision. The same IP user has also requested this article be moved, which again is going against decisions set out at ArbCom. What action (if any) should be taken now? Hello, only a short while ago, I requested that several stub articles of a repetitious nature on several members of the ruling dynasty/family of Amb (princely state) be merged into the main article, which already contains a quantity of material on these rulers and these may, possibly be expandd further therein. I also left comments and reasons for my request on the relevant/appropriate talk pages. However, I havent received and response so far from anyone and I am not sure what to do--is mrging these stubs a good idea, as it might create some confusion on the existing main page? or would it be preferable to perhaps request deletion of the stubs so that the main article may thus be developed separately? Im not yet fully confident about these modalities and technical aspects and would be grateful for help from some experienced editor, thanks. Khani100 (talk) 12:33, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Khani100[reply]

Merger discussions are rarely fast, especially on comparatively obscure articles such as these, and the discussion has only been in place for a few days. Give it a couple of weeks before assuming that you aren't going to get any responses. It would also be an idea to place a {{Merge from}} template on the destination article. You could perhaps consider notifing an interested WikiProject: WikiProject India and WikiProject Pakistan both cover the article in question. Yunshui  13:22, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    The powder coating process

    Hello,

The "The powder coating process" is a very informative article. Thank you.

Now to a question - In the "Part preparation processes and equipment", The second and third paragraphs talk about chemical pre-treatment, and the fourth paragraph begins "Another method ------. I'm a bit confused. From the article I'm led to believe that either one does the chemical pre-treatment before applying the powder, OR one uses abrasive blasting but not both.

From readings that I have done as well as speaking with applicators it seems one first uses an abrasive blasting procedure and then one can ALSO use a chemical treatment (phosphating) for added pretreatment before applying the powder.

By the way, I am having a mild steel railing fabricated, and then want to have an applicator apply a textured polyester-TGIC powder.

Your thoughts and clarifications would be most appreciated.

    New Editor

I recently added a list of references which included books, publications and lectures to the artist, scientist and scholar Todd Siler's wiki page . There has been a noted COI along with two citations regarding appearance of an advertisement and external links on the page. Although there may appear to be a COI, adding links and verifiable published references I considered to be neutral.

I am desperately trying to understand how I can rectify this situation as I fear it may cause great embarrassment to Dr.Siler, which was not my intention. My hope was to enhance the educational value of his work to a wiki audience by adding links and references, which are all verifiable, published works. I did not write the original page and did little to edit it, I merely added. I am now simply afraid to do anything to the page for fear of making more mistakes.

It needs to be cleaned up. Some helpful editors went in and fixed the references as well as downsized the external links. I am grateful for that. Can I solicit help from the community for continued cleanup to restore the page to an acceptable version?

Should I just remove all my edits and give up? I seek advice and help from more experienced editors.

This has been a difficult experience.

Some advice given by others at #New at editing above.--ukexpat (talk) 19:31, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the only article you have ever edited is Todd Siler.
If you intend contributing to Wikipedia for the sake of Wikipedia, then start by editing articles on people or subjects that you are interested in but not connected with, doing uncontroversial things like improving punctuation and grammar, until you have more of a feel for what makes a good article.
If you plan to make a living by changing articles on behalf of clients, be aware that this is not permitted. Maybe you will find ways of keeping a low profile and getting around the prohibition; but you've made a poor start.
If your only interest is in the Todd Siler article, then I think it would be in everyone's interest, including your own and Dr. Siler's, if you backed off and let others sort out the article. You could leave a statement in the article's talk page saying you are doing this. Maproom (talk) 22:04, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that I did misunderstand your meaning when you said "citation" above, for which I apologise (we don't use the word in that sense in Britain); but the advice I gave there stands. I think you again misunderstand the purpose of Wikipedia: it is not here to "enhance the educational value of his work to a wiki audience". The purpose of Wikipedia is to collect and report what others have said about him (assuming he is notable, i.e. several independent reliable sources have discussed him). Anything more would be either promotion or original research, neither of which is acceptable. --ColinFine (talk) 22:26, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    North Carolina/South Carolina border dispute

Does anyone know about the dispute over the North Carolina/South Carolina border dispute going on, near the town of Clover (used to be in SC, but is now in NC). Need to merge (delete actually) an article

I created Poster Museum at Wilanow, then found out there's an existing article on the same museum called simply Poster Museum. The "Poster Museum" article is a very short stub, so could that one be deleted, while the Poster Museum at Wilanow replaces it? There's no point in creating a redirect out of "Poster Museum" because that will confuse readers looking for general information on poster museums, like a list, rather than this particular museum in Poland... thanks. OttawaAC (talk) 22:58, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What I would suggest is retaining the page history but moving the pre-existing article to an alternate name that probably should exist as a redirect, maybe Poster Museum at Wilanów and then redirecting that to the article you created. Alternatively, since you are the only contributor to the newer article, you could simply replace the content of the existing article at Poster Museum with your new content and then it can be moved together to the newer, better title. Note that this would not be possible from a copyright standpoint if people other than you had edited the new page. I'd be happy to then take care of the move (drop me a note on my talk page) or you can request it using {{db-move}}, but only you can replace the content at Poster Museum with your new content, or proper attribution would be lost.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:33, 11 April 2012 (UTC)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:26, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be harsh, but there is a great deal of work that still needs to be done on your page. You need to read WP:CITE to learn how to cite references correctly. You should also read WP:RS to understand what is and is not considered a reliable source, and WP:GNG to get an idea of the minimum requirements for inclusion - which at present, your sandbox article does not meet. The band may potentially be notable, but as it stands, this article would be deleted within minutes of being moved to mainspace (under WP:A7, most likely). References for new page?

Hi there, I would love some advice. I am currently creating a new page for a band. I have managed to find a huge list of notable references, magazines etc, where they have been mentioned, all over the world. I placed this information underneath the references (its the huge obvious section) I really do not want the page to be deleted, but have no idea how to include all those references, is that possible? are there any I should use over others? Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissLadyLawless (talkcontribs) 13:34, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Strictly speaking, you don't have to "use" all of the references to establish notability standards. The mere existance of the source material is all that is needed, and including a giant list of uncited sources at the end of an article can be unweildy. Generally, you only include sources which directly support information in the article itself, usually by the use of "inline citations" (see WP:INLINE. A good idea would be to move the giant list of sources to the article talk page, where people can use the sources for more information or to improve the article, or to establish notability, but then the giant list won't mess up the appearence of the article. --Jayron32 13:59, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New page (I hope) establishing notability

    Hi all,

I am very new to this so apologies if my page thus far looks rubbish. I have a large section of references which I need to pick a few from as i cannot include them all. Does anyone know which references may be best for me to use? I would be gutted if the page got binned. I have highlighted the sources in bold so no real reading is required I know its too long! also, any opinions on how good/poor my page seems to look?thank you x — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissLadyLawless (talkcontribs) 14:08, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    See above.--ukexpat (talk) 14:22, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Use the sources that directly support the statements and claims you have written in the article. I see the references you have inserted so far seem to be from websites but your cites don't actually include a link to the web pages or the article/page titles. You might find using a cite template easier - it is basically a "form" that you paste into the article and then you insert the details such as author, title, url, etc. There are a variety of templates for citing websites, books, newspapers, magazines, etc. listed here - but first read WP:Referencing for beginners. Again, see above and please stop creating new sections relating to the same question. I have moved this one to keep the thread together.--ukexpat (talk) 15:12, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I have done a little work on your draft, to show you the kind of thing that could be done. I did a little cleanup: removing the excessive use of bold and uppercase letters. I converted a couple of the references to use a citation template and use links that people can actually click on. I removed the list of quotes that seemed to be cut and pasted from another website (a likely copyright violation). I added wikilinks to a few other encyclopedia articles - more can be added, particularly band names and people.
That said, there is nothing in the article which states how the band meets Wikipedia's policy on the notability of bands. Notability is not inherited, so just because they sound like a some other notable bands, doesn't mean they are notable themselves. If it was moved to the article space now, it would probably be put up for speedy deletion in a very short time (I would be surprised if it survived longer than a few hours). Take a look at other band articles, to see the kind of things necessary to make it as an encyclopedia article. Astronaut (talk) 16:36, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please use another article name during the upload, for example British Armed Forces. Right after the upload, edit the image page and correct the article name. Technical explanation of the error: Fair use images like logos are not allowed on disambiguation pages. During the upload, MediaWiki:FileUploadWizard.js looks for categories with "disambiguation" in the name. Heroes Welcome UK belongs to the hidden category Category:Articles with links needing disambiguation from January 2012. This does not imply it is a disambiguation page but it fools the script. I will report the problem. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:51, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, thanks for reporting that, and sorry for the bug. I've changed the script now. To Fwe506: If you want to try again, it ought to be working now, but probably only if you bypass your browser cache at least once after you re-start the upload wizard, to make sure you have the modified version of the script loaded. Or just use the workaround PrimeHunter mentioned. Sorry for the trouble. Fut.Perf. 14:20, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On Thur. May 12 I was watching Good Morning America. I was distrubed about what the crew was saying to Josh Elliott, They were teasing him about his weight gain. I don't think national T.V OR any other place is either loving or kind, regardless if Mr. Elliott was taking it on the chin. THEY had just covered a Star, were people were being CRUEL in there comments about her "Puffy Face", THEY even expressed concern about the negative and unwanted comments to this poor actress, WHO is a beautiful woman and looks the picture of health, SO for them to be make comments on T.V, even in jest to Mr. Elliott was NOT very perfessionalNOR funny OR educational. As a suggestion they ALL should watch the movie "Bully" because that is how it comes across to people like me who have had to bear up under what people, and family feel is constructive critizism hoping that unkind comments will move a person to help themselves, and thats even if that person just needs to lose 10 or 20 lbs. Comments no matter how good its intention is meant to be HURTS, NO one sees the pain or FEELS there heart breaking especially when they come from so-called friends OR family and in the case of Mr. Elliott in front of millions of people, THINKING that being embarassed in front of millions of people will move a him to shame and watch what he eats. NOT every overweight person is because of overeating. I didn't appreciate the "Grilled Cheese" were everyone was getting one but he kindly said no- "WHY" more so because he was on T.V and the rest of the crew had been making comments about his weight. There is a blank page for James Burk which is nothing more than a redirect to James "Burke." I am making a page for someone actually names James Burk not Burke. What do I do?T.Whetsell (talk) 17:45, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just edit http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=James_Burk&redirect=no to remove the redirect code and add your text.--ukexpat (talk) 17:55, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
