    Upon looking at the famous people page (Oregon)I notice you have not included Mindy Duncan 1988 Miss Teen USA. I find this interesting as you have articles about her. It is also odd as she was the first Oregon teen to win this title and the only red head in its history. She is from Newberg Oregon.     According to the deletion log Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Bioscale was deleted as spam - click on the redlink to see the details. The procedure for requesting undeletion is at WP:REFUND.     reference addition from an attachment file.

    hello, i want to add some citations to a page, but problem is the reference i want to give is in an pdf file. The file is valid and has link on a trusted site(pdf file is about publications and journals of the author which doesn't have links anywhere else).     Centering text of rows in sortable prettytables.

    What is the page you are working on? Are you referring to the PrettyTable library in Python? Is your article on your computer?     Thank you for your answer. The tutorial has a section titled "Per-column settings", but probably it does not work in sortable tables. I made a few tries but with no effect.     I have opened a dispute but the other editor does not respond. What's next?

    I have opened a dispute:"1947–48 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine" but the other user does not respond. He received a formal notice 5 days ago, and my notice 18 days ago.

    There are no 'punitive measures' for not participating in dispute resolution. Nobody is obliged to take part. I'd suggest that you try the Wikipedia:Third opinion option - getting an uninvolved contributor to look at the disputed content might resolve the deadlock.     I now see that two other editors have reverted your contribution. That means that Third opinion is no longer applicable. Post to the article talk page, or to the talk page of the second editor who reverted your addition. Another option might be a content Request for Comments to get other editors to look.     I was unaware of this issue when I started to correct a spelling error at the bottom of the David Rosenfelt page ("d" added to his name on the link to his website). I reset my change to the original error and backed out. Is my IP address now floating around in Wikipedia somewhere?     One thing you need to take care over is that articles concerning individuals accused of crimes, but not yet convicted, must avoid stating that they are guilty.     GNU/Linux

    I thought we had a policy or guideline regarding renaming "Linux" to "GNU/Linux" and renaming "GNU/Linux" to "Linux" in the many articles that use the term, but I can't seem to find it. Does it exist? --Guy Macon (talk) 20:11, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Maybe it falls under WP:COMMONNAME, since Linux is more common than GNU/Linux according to GNU/Linux_naming_controversy. RudolfRed (talk)

    I am pretty sure that you can create an entire Linux distribution using the BSD toolchain instead of the GNU toolchain, but has any distro actually done that? If even one has, that would make the "GNU/Linux" term not just unnecessary, but wrong.

    Adding to a page

    Hello...today I added Ruth Asawa and Benny Bufano to the list of artists on this page: List of people from San Francisco

    I also wanted to add Julia Morgan, architect, to the list of OTHERS, but the section of the list that includes the "other" is encapsulated (for lack of a better term) in such a way that additions are not possible. I've clicked on "edit" but the list lights up in a pale blue screen.

    Am I doing something wrong, or is the list 'locked' or 'encapsulated' for a specific reason?

    Are you trying to edit the article by clicking on Edit Page, which will invoke Visual Editor? The behavior that you mention is something that happens if you are using an older version of a web browser that is not supported by Visual Editor but is not recognized as a back-level unsupported web browser. Try editing the page using Edit Source, which uses Wiki markup. Please reply here what web browser you are using, and maybe the Visual Editor team will look into the version issue.     Visual Editor is buggy. In the opinion of some editors, it should not have been released for general use in its current state. What version of Mozilla Firefox were you using? I experienced the exact same problem when I was using Firefox 12. I resolved it by upgrading to Firefox 22. Your version of Firefox may be back-level.     Help:Collapsing#Customization shows how to change it for yourself. Is that what you want? The defaults are set in MediaWiki:Common.js:

    uploading photo on wikipedia entry

    Hey Muggy. Free images (free copyright license or public domain) should be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here. The Commons has no autoconfirmation threshold for uploading files so you can head over there and upload it immediately. Once uploaded there, it can be used here natively.     Urgent help needed

    Please kindly help me out with the following problem.

    On behalf or Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, I am requesting urgent help. The wiki page of Debapriya Bhattacharya is Debapriya Bhattchariya. But the problem is the link got a wrong spelling. "Bhattachariya" spelling should be "Bhattacharya" i.e. there should not be the letter "i". Because of this mistake when we search for this page in wiki it appears with the wrong spelling of my colleague. How can I sort out this problem? If there is no way to solve this, then what is the procedure to close this page so that I can re-create a page for Debapriya Bhattacharya with correct spelling.

    We can move the page to another spelling but the link isn't spelled "Bhattachariya", it's spelled "Bhattchariya" without "a" after "t", so it would appear there are two things to change and not one. Is that correct? PrimeHunter (talk) 09:04, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Inaccurate information & Common misconception

    I was reading a page and found some incorrect information. I'd love to contact the author of this page, but can't find a way to do so. Canada in the American Civil War is the page to which I am referring. It says that slavery was a key influence on the American Civil War. This is a common misconception, but I would like the error corrected. Slavery was not brought up as an issue until after the war started. Lincoln used it as a way to get support for the war. It also brought about the ability to have blacks to serve in the Union army. Slavery was in the North and the South. Only 6% of the Confederacy owned slaves at the time of the war. There were even black slave owners. Took one guy a year to prove he owned another black man. The war was started by the Morrill Tariff. The South was being unjustly taxed. The Confederacy was born to represent the South. Lee and Grant both had slaves. Lee set his free before he left to fight. Grant didn't give his up until the 13th amendment forced him to do so. The War didn't start until Lincoln sent the Union Army to make the Confederates "pay up." Lincoln was, quite frankly, a jackass. Sure, he freed the slaves. That's fine and dandy. However, he didn't give a shit about the slaves. Sure, we say slavery is gone. Is it really? Hell no. It just has a different name, and we've included all races now. The American Civil War wasn't about slavery. It was about people standing up against tyranny and injustice. I couldn't care less what color someone's skin is and I think slavery was bad, but think about it. Do you think a disagreement over slavery is a good reason to start such a bloody war? No one felt that strongly about it. At the time, slavery was just kinda there. Even if you didn't agree with it, you didn't really do anything about it. Besides, a war wouldn't be the answer to something like that. Would 300 THOUSAND people go off to their deaths for a bunch of black people (keep in mind, "coloreds" were still segregated from whites for a long, long time after that)? I think not. It took a long time before a substantial number of whites were ready to let "coloreds" have the same rights they had. In the mindset of those people back then, free or not, a negro was a negro. Slavery was bad, but it's not the thing we think it was. It's a common misconception that slaves were beaten by their owners. The point of having a slave was for them to serve you. If you were beating them and mistreating them all the time, they'd be incapable of serving you. Those who sold slaves DID beat them, but owners didn't beat their slaves.

    Wikipedia pages don't have specific authors. They are created by someone, but then can be edited by anyone who cares to, even you. The place to discuss this particular issue is on its Talk Page, Talk:Canada in the American Civil War. You will need to be able to refer to independent, reliable sources to back up any changes you wish to make. Rojomoke (talk) 09:45, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Also, Wikipedia is based on consensus and neutral point of view. You have a strong pro-Southern point of view, and you will find that pushing it will encounter opposition. Many twenty-first century historians write that twentieth-century historians minimized the importance of slavery as a reason for the American Civil War, and you will have difficulty imposing a non-consensus interpretation. Any change to the interpretation of the causes of the American Civil War will be contentious. You could try a content Request for Comments to see if other editors support your point of view.     I'm the mother of chris tiu. I tried to edit Chris Tiu's official blog but it was removed. Chris has two official blogs. The first one ( which is up to 2011) was in the wikipedia.     Hey Patricia, Every browser has a setting for making a particular site your homepage. As an example, in Firefox, click on Firefox at the top of the page, go into Preferences from there, then go into the General tab, and in there you should see where to set your homepage. If you want instructions for a different browser, tell us what it is. By the way, this site is called Wikipedia, not wiki.     Lost my edit toolbar,... again

    I lost my edit toolbar on the Main Wikipedia pages a day or two ago... again. I checked the archives for similar incidents, and they claimed that the people involved should either use WP:PURGE or update their JavaScript. My PC insists that my JavaScript program is updated, and purging hasn't worked for me.     This happens to me occasionally as well. I believe this can happen if your internet connection is poor. It seems in that case the toolbar either loads in a messed up state (such that you see all the special characters and stuff uncollapsed above the edit window) or doesn't appear at all. At least that's what happens to me sometimes. It might sometimes also be caused if there is a lag in Wikipedias database servers (I think). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:27, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing an Article/Error Message

    Hello,

    I recently worked on an Article for Submission that needed better references. I edited the article and references, and tried to submit a new version. Here is the error message I received:

    title of the article on me is in an unhelpful form of my personal name

    Current article name: "Kevin McFoy Dunn." This was supplied by the person who originally put the page together (and with whom, I'm sorry to say, I'm no longer in contact, he having, I hear, decamped to Venezuela), but it has dawned on me that, all of the works in my recorded oeuvre having been issued under the name "Kevin Dunn," the current name in principle makes it most extraordinarily difficult for anyone researching me for whatever reason to find me on Wikipedia.     Bad multi-image or bad browser?

    In Firefox at default zoom the two mentioned headings are hidden behind a row with the 4 US maps. I didn't notice that before. If I zoom out with Ctrl+- then the headings become visible but with 3 US maps in one row with some blank space to the right, and 1 US map in a below row.     New page patrol for user talk pages?

    I was looking at User_talk:APEfc123, and there's a link at the bottom to mark the page as patrolled. Is this link supposed to appear in user space and on talk pages? In the last day or so I have received a few notifications (via the RDOD) that some of my sandboxes have been "reviewed".     How can I avoid the dreaded "CONFLICT OF INTEREST" tag by Wikipedia editors - which I understand?

    I would like to see Herbert J. Mols with his own Wikipedia "Bio" page as do thousands of other people do. He should be recognized for his contributions to Amateur Athletics: a founder of the NY Empire State Games, Executive with US AAU basketball (25 + years), Executive with the US Olympic Basketball Committee, Manager of several US State Dept Goodwill tours in the 1960's and 70's, Resident Manager of the 1970 Eastern European tour to the Soviet Union, Finland, Estonia (where he is mentioned several times in the recently written book by the Estonian Sports Museum), President of the Niagara AAU for several years (Track, Swimming, etc.), Manager of the 1971 US Men's Pam Games basketball team, 1972 Manager of the US Men's Olympic basketball team, & Manager of the 1974 US Men's World Basketball Championship team.     You should look at Wikipedia's criteria for articles about people. The question is very simple: are there newspaper and magazine articles about Herbert Mols? Is his life discussed at any length within a book? If yes - and keep in mind that "mentioned several times" does NOT count - then yes, he probably qualifies to have a Wikipedia article. But if his name is just mentioned in articles and books - dozens or hundreds or tens of thousands of times - without someone say "This guy is important enough for us to write at length about him", then - sorry - he doesn't qualify.
    The most persuasive case you can make for a Wikipedia article is to prepare a list of newspaper and magazine articles, and books, that do meet the WP:BIO criteria. If you can do that, you can probably find someone here to write a Wikipedia article.     page curation, temporary page move

    I'm working on cleanup of the New Pages Feed by page curation. There are two pages that cannot be curated due to a bug in the software; pages whose name starts with a period don't show the page curation toolbar. The pages are .44 Remington Centerfire and .223 Wylde. The bug is Bug 50023 - Unable to mark certain articles as patrolled, and it has not been fixed. I'm wondering if it's possible to move the pages to a temporary name, mark them reviewed, then move them back. I'm concerned about possibly messing up redirects or talk pages.     What versions of the Bible can be quoted?

    I am interested in helping update a Christian page but am uncertain about which Bible versions can be quoted on Wikipedia. One website said NIV and NKJV can be quoted up to 500 and 250 verses respectively so long as this doesn't constitute 50% or so of any article, however I also remember seeing something on Wikipedia (which I now am unable to find) that said I can't use these versions on Wikipedia.     Please read WP:NOT - Wikipedia is not a collection of information. It would not be acceptable to add a large number of verses to any Wikipedia article - this is an encyclopedia.
    As for what can be quoted, that depends on whether it is still copyrighted or not. The New International Version (NIV) Bible and the The New King James Version are both still under copyright, so quoting them is only allowed to the extent that this is fair use. Certainly quoting one or two verses, in a particular Wikipedia article, is fair use.     Hi there, most of what you need will be at Help:Getting started including a few items down with the Help:Introduction to referencing/1, however what your asking isn't at all the most complicated things at wikipedia. To add to a "subject" (we call them articles) simply hit edit and it is pretty simple after that. To add a reference the bottom left of the box your in should have the <ref> </ref> tags you can highlight the pasted web reference and wiki will code it for you. If you wish to add something to the article that may be contentious or debatable it is best to check the TALK page tab at the top first to see if there is an ongoing or previous discussion about what you wish to add or you may simply add it to the talk page and see if there is a conversation of its merits over the next few days prior to adding the contribution.     Small request here. An editor recently marked a repeatedly-used citation in the article Richard Stengel as {{dead link}}. This is reference #6, a press release from when Stengel was named managing editor at Time magazine (note: although normally discouraged as WP:SPS, I believe this press release is used appropriately). The easiest thing would simply to be add an "archiveurl" parameter, like so:

I uploaded it because I was unable to find an image of Glacier Peak and Image Lake online that was free, and the view depicted in this image is very well-known, and is what Image Lake is famous for (see citations). I can't seem to find a suitable template for the image, however, and I was wondering if there is a suitable free-use rationale template for the image and, if not, if the image should even be uploaded at all.     The funeral referred to at st marys church was that of my father a local man that lived in clappersgate (the street adjacent to he church) for most of his life,, the funeral was in June 2013 not may.,,, that of Mr Thomas Henry Bell, he worked with pit ponies from the age of 16. His hearse was pulled by two black stallions not one..

    Screwdrivers

    Why does your page on screwdrivers totally suck? Why does it fail to explain the reason for the success of the Philips screwdriver is ease of assembly because the screwdriver does not come out as it does with a slot screw. Why does it say that a Phillips screw can be turned with a flat screwdriver?     Any complaint about the quality of an article can be resolved by improving the article, which you are invited to do, provided that your coverage of the material is not comprised of original research, is presented with a neutral tone and is backed by reliable sources.     I'm sorry but unless there is an article here about you, you shouldn't be added to a list of notable residents. That's the way those lists of notable residents work.     Agree with Dismas, thou we all are famous in our own minds you may wish to read Wikipedia:Notability instead of the "FAQ's, info, instructions and Help" you've mentioned. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a residence listing, social media site or community networking rolodex. Notability would require WP:RELIABLESOURCES, basically if I see you on TV, hear about you on radio talkshows and read about you in the newspaper then adding your entry to "Notable residents" would be something to explore.     I don't see where you've uploaded an image. You must first upload the image (see WP:UPLOAD) and then it can be used in articles. Though, judging from the description you gave to the image you were trying to add, it would likely not be acceptable. Magazine covers can only be used if the magazine itself is discussed. And they cannot be used simply to illustrate the person on the cover for that person's article. If you have a photo that you own the rights to, you can upload it to Wikimedia Commons so that it can be used on all the different language versions of Wikipedia. (just uploading to the English version means that the file can only be used here and not on, for example, the German Wikipedia) Dismas|(talk) 07:07, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    The Dutch Wikipedia community has a weak policy on citing sources and users have reached consensus that only controversial facts need source references. User:Dqfn13 has previously removed references from an article I've edited on the Dutch Wikipedia. He has now started removing references from the same article on the English Wikipedia [4] [5].     Hi, this is no vandalism, this is removing citation that are not needed. WP:VERIFY states: Attribute all quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. (bold by me) I don't think anybody will chalenge who's the director of a museum, and nobody will chalenge the location of that same museum, will they? I have not removed any other refferences as I know the English Wiki is more strickt with citations.
    Now, I am chalenging the source itself, as the source about the location is very reliable... but it is the contact page of the museum website... very reliable but it also smells like promoting the museum.     Hi Dqfn13, first if you wish to challenge a source it's best to discuss it first on the articles Talk page, not just delete the references from the article. Such a thing can be seen as acting without WP:AGF and yes can be viewed by many as vandalism. Second, it is encouraged a lot to add citations for such things as "director" etc. since those items have and will continue to be challenged for citations on Wikipedia, not to mention the sideways WP:BLP concerns it raises. As you should discuss on the article's talk page or even ask for a WP:3O you will find that using a source or citation that seems promotional when it is published by the subject of the article is not by itself forbidden and in many instances encouraged when balanced with other citations. Either way many editors will get the wrong idea about your intentions if you start deleting parts of articles without any notice on the talk page, most especially references or citations for those articles.     Well, forget it... I'm not going to do it all over again, on the Dutch talkpage Editor was challenged by three other editors (besides me) and now he/she does it all again on the English Wiki. I'm not doing it all over. I've added my reasons both times in the summary, that should be enough. Editor acts like the article is his/hers, from this day on I don't care about it anymore. This source fot the adress of the museum... that's the contactpage... so instead of just giving the adress you can send an e-mail. That was one fo the reasons why it was removed from the Dutch article. I've not removed other sources for the theft even though they were challenged at the Dutch talk page... I've only removed refs I thought (and stil think) were obselete. Clearly Editor didn't listen to the others as he/she does exactly the same here. Be my guest, I won't bother you anymore, the article is all yours, maybe add some more refs so every single sentence has its source. Because that happend at the Dutch page too.     Should brief members of a band/group still be considered as 'former members'?

    Hi, guys. I just want to ask about Wikipedia's standards when it comes to articles about bands/members. So let's say two original members left and then the talent agency announces that two new members are added. Later on when the group gears up for a comeback single, those 'two' replacements are no longer there and have been replaced by three newer ones. So are the two previous replacements still worth being considered as 'former members?. They never really released any music with the group hence they didn't debut with them.     Is this concerning a currently live wikipedia article? If so discussing this on that band's article's talk page or the Wikiproject for bands or that genre of music might find you editors familiar with the ins and outs of band member listing consensus. If this band doesn't have a wikipedia article as yet we might have to go back a bit and understand if notability or WP:RELIABLESOURCES have been met. I understand your asking it as a policy question but the specific band would help, and thou I'm no expert on the matter the situation you describe I wouldn't think those members that released no music should be listed just as a matter of WP:COMMONSENSE a pillar above policies.     Checking out the user ID and the contributions it seems to be just a random thing for now, it may die out on its own. If this was me I wouldn't feed the trolls but use your best judgment on elevating it with either a message back to the IP or a noticeboard alert. Too often a few individuals get their jollies by counting how many wikipedians were involved in their banishment so ignoring them for a day might actually work much better, but again depends exactly what he/she is going to do next.     As suggested above, leaving it for a while may be the best solution; if it continues, however, it is in contravention of Wikipedia's signature guidelines. Per WP:SIGFORGE, "Never use another editor's signature. Impersonating another editor by using his or her username or signature is forbidden. Altering the markup code of your signature to make it look substantially like another user's signature may also be considered a form of impersonation. Editing the code of your signature to link it to another editor's user page is not permitted."
