The Game Awards 2017 is an upcoming video game award ceremony and the fourth incarnation of The Game Awards. The event will be hosted by Geoff Keighley and is set to place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 7, 2017, honoring the best video games and their achievements of 2017.

Presentation

As with previous Game Awards, Canadian games journalist Geoff Keighley will host the show, which will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 7, 2017 and live streamed across sixteen different content platforms worldwide.[1][2] An integrated voting system was included on Google Search and Twitter; and on Twitch.tv, the show will have an interactive overlay that allows viewers to predict award winners before they are announced, the first such use of one on the platform.[3][4] The presentation will include performances throughout the show from French indie pop band Phoenix and The Game Awards Orchestra, a mixed group consisting of an orchestra and other guest musicians, such as Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates and cellist Tina Guo, to perform music from 20 of the nominated games.[2][5][6] Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima, film director Guillermo del Toro, television producer Justin Roiland, and actors Norman Reedus, Andy Serkis, Felicia Day, Aisha Tyler, and Zachary Levi will also make appearances as award presenters.[6][7][8]

Keighley also stated that the show will include promotional material from some upcoming films, as the event drew interest from a few movie studios.[3] A month before the show, Facebook began presenting a five-part making-of documentary series on it via its Watch video service, known as "The Road to The Game Awards".[3] During the event, sales on some of the nominated games will be held across numerous game distribution platforms, such as Xbox Live and Steam.[9]

Game presentations

In addition to the awards and other performances, the broadcast will include brief trailers and presentations for upcoming games. The list of games that will be presented include:

Awards and nominees

The nominees were announced on November 14, 2017.[13] In order to be eligible, candidate games must have had either a commercial or early access release date on or before November 27, 2017.[14] The list of nominees were selected by a panel of 52 people in the video game industry, with the top five games (or six in the case of ties) selected in each category presented as nominees.[3] Public voting for awards will run from November 14 to December 6, 2017; public voting only counts towards 10% of the winners' selection in the Jury-voted awards, while it is the sole consideration for the fan's choice awards.[14]

Two major award changes were made in the Awards structure for the 2017 show. First, the previous "Best Mobile/Handheld Game" was split into separate "Best Mobile Game" and "Best Handheld Game" awards, reflecting the differences in how handheld and mobile games are developed. Second, a new award for "Best Ongoing Game" will be offered for games that continue to provide new content as a service model.[3] Another new award, the Student Game Award, was established to highlight games developed by students in higher education programs, and will be selected from a panel of five industry leaders: Todd Howard, Hideo Kojima, Illka Paananen, Kim Swift, and Vince Zampella.[15]
