Elections in New York State |
---|
The 2021 New York City mayoral election will consist of a primary on June 22, 2021, followed by a general election on November 2, 2021. Incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio is unable to run for a third term due to term limits.[citation needed] The election will be the first New York City mayoral election to use ranked-choice voting in the primaries.[1]
Journalists and political commentators have predicted several potential candidates, including 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Andrew Yang, Congressman Max Rose, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer.[2][3] As of the summer of 2020, however, many candidates had declared themselves for both major parties, and most of them were first-time candidates who had never held political office, rather than sitting elected officials. By fall 2020, Adams and Stringer had officially declared their respective candidacies, along with a large number of other prominent members of the New York City business and political communities.
