Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

    Instructions for editors

There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

    1. Proposed additions
    2. Proposed removals
    3. Troubleshooting and problems
    4. Discussion

Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

    Instructions for admins

Any admin unfamiliar with this page should probably read this first, thanks.
If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

Please consider using Special:BlockedExternalDomains instead, powered by the AbuseFilter extension. This is faster and more easily searchable, though only supports whole domains and not whitelisting.

    1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
    2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
    3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages).
    4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regex — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
    5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
    6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number - 1216384919 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.

A user-gadget for handling additions to and removals from the spam-blacklist is available at User:Beetstra/Gadget-Spam-blacklist-Handler

Spamming of a junk scraper site by an IPv6 user in the Special:Contributions/2a02:3038:2e0::/49 range, but there's a few useful edits interspersed. They've been spamming for a couple of weeks now, I think it's time for it to be stopped. Ravensfire (talk) 15:25, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    closeupchris.com

    Diffs:

Website is commercial advertisement for a magician and will never (I'm 99.9% certain) be needed as a reference. I suspect he hired an agency, due to the odd geolocations of the multiple IPs that have spammed the domain using apparently AI-written text in multiple articles. Each day the url is added to a different article using a different IP so neither protection nor IP blocks would be of any use. Schazjmd (talk) 14:56, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, that sounds familiar. Added the .co.uk version as well that's been spamming from odd geolocations. WIll add both to the blocked domains list. Sam Kuru (talk) 17:39, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Proposed removals

    ValuePenguin.com

1 The web address of the site you would like removed from the list (omit the http and www parts) Valuepenguin.com 2 The reason(s) why links to the site should be allowed and would benefit Wikipedia Valuepenguin.com is a reputable domain, attested by McAfee SiteAdvisor as a finance/banking domain with minimal risk.

This is how Wikipedia will benefit from allowing Valuepenguin.com : • Reputable Content: Links to reputable external sources (such as valuepenguin.com can serve as references to support the information presented in Wikipedia articles. This helps ensure the accuracy and reliability of the content by allowing readers to verify the information and check the sources themselves. • Enhanced User Experience: Including relevant external links can enhance the overall user experience by providing readers with access to site content, such as videos, images, etc. that may not be available within the Wikipedia article itself. 3 The article or articles on which the links would be used Since it’s a trusted domain, the link can be used on multiple wiki pages, including - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LendingTree. 4 If you are connected to the site, then please declare this at this point. Failure to do so will, if discovered, be treated negatively. Yes, I am a LendingTree employee reporting this issue as observed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.80.133.1 (talk) 19:44, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done Like other Native advertising sites, it is of no value to Wikipedia. OhNoitsJamie Talk 20:02, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    maps.app.goo.gl

What's wrong with google's shortened urls, such as maps.app.goo.gl/7YoyWUH9621pfBoX7 ? It's generated automatically by Google Maps and there is no obvious way of getting the full url. Alaexis¿question? 08:14, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You still can get the fully expanded url in the address bar, i.e. [1] though? – robertsky (talk) 09:07, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The full url doesn't work for me, it doesn't open the PoI page. Alaexis¿question? 12:22, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Try [2] for the full url, that seems to get the POI to pull up for me. Ravensfire (talk) 15:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It works, thanks! How can I do it myself next time? Alaexis¿question? 12:41, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just put the shortened urn in my browser and it automatically opened using the full url. Maybe that doesn't happen in some situations, but it's been consistent for me across three browsers on my desktop. Ravensfire (talk) 14:39, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Oh, somehow I didn't think of it. Thanks again! Alaexis¿question? 14:53, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done For the purpose of this discussion, you were already able to include a link to the restaurant's map listing by omitting the http. There's no use compelling case for shortened map links (or any URL shorteners) in Wikipedia mainspace. OhNoitsJamie Talk 13:20, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a compelling case *for* having them banned? I'm pretty sure that "maps.app.goo.gl" urls can only be generated by Google Maps. Alaexis¿question? 13:25, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ohnoitsjamie? Alaexis¿question? 07:20, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no valid use for them in mainspace, and I'm not interested in discussing the issue further. OhNoitsJamie Talk 11:59, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The full url "maps.google.com" is used a lot in the mainspace, the shortened one would be used for the same purposes. I'm not sure I understand your approach, if there is no reason to ban such urls and if it's possible to remove it from the blacklist, why can't it be done? Alaexis¿question? 12:44, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I've clarified that I'm only requesting to remove "maps.app.goo.gl". Alaexis¿question? 22:48, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    AnyplaceAmerica.com

This site has bee in existence since 2008 and has a editorial staff. It is based in the United States. It consists of a searchable database that pulls place names from USGS and Google maps. I can see it as beneficial to Wikipedia editors because it provides county name and location cooridnates for the features it identifies. I suspect it was blacklisted because it provides links to maps generated by Google and USGS, but am not sure. Rublamb (talk) 15:23, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was added here by Oshwah, related to this ANI discussion over scraper linkfarms. I can see that site is run by a SEO/marketing company which indeed specializes in targeted marketing via content farms; I'm not sure I see the editorial staff mentioned anywhere, very possible I missed it. Sam Kuru (talk) 18:42, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I may have used the wrong term. I meant that this webite has identified staff who oversee it, as opposed to user-generated content or anonymous content creators. Since the conversation you linked to does not discuss or even mention this website, it would seem that it was prematurely blacklisted. In their privacy statement, Anyplace America says it only collects data that is shared "from you when you register on our site, subscribe to our newsletter, respond to a survey or fill out a form." None of these things are required to access the info provided by this website, nor have I been asked to sign up for anything when accessing it. Also, I cannot see how this serves as a link farm in the traditional sense. It primarily links to governmental maps from the US Geological Survey. There is a link to order a print version of the map, which is probably where the link farm issue comes into play. But the website is clear that this is a link to buy something. I do not believe a link to buy something automatically removes the value of this website's geographical database as a potential Wikipedia source since no one has to buy anything or even click the link to use the info provided. But I am not as code-savvy as others, so I might be missing something. Rublamb (talk) 20:04, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The identified staff are two marketing guys who run many of these scraper sites and add commercial and affiliate links to public data. The linked conversation explicitly mentioned the site and shows where it had been linked, it also links to a RSN discussion on the site as well. I see nothing wrong with the original blacklisting. It appears you're working to add sources to a cool list of drafts in your sandbox; just link to the original reliable source they scraped from: Like Foley Draft. There's no need to link or give credit to sites that are just acting as a middle man. Sam Kuru (talk) 22:19, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Discussion

While running IABot on a page I was hit with a message that it could not submit the edit(s) due to the domain everyculture.com being blacklisted which I have confirmed. It appears this domain is used in 217 articles on Wikipedia.1 How do I find out why the domain is blocked and how do I remedy this?

This was added to the local blacklist five years ago as part of this request back in 2019. I see a higher count of extant links to this site: 512 in both article and draft space. There's a also an old Wikipedia mirror on that domain - I'll clean up the refs to that. For the rest you can 1) debate the wholesale addition to the blacklist, 2) evaluate the links and whitelist them individually, or 3) remove the links per the logic of the original blacklisting. Troubleshooting and problems
