:Philippine English is definitely a thing, unless the article about it is an elaborate hoax. Philippine_English#Orthography_and_grammar describes some of its particularities. From my five minutes of reading on the subject, it also seems to be well-established in written usage. WP:ENGVAR is not restricted to US vs. UK, so it definitely applies here (use Philippine English for subjects related principally to the Philippines).
:That being said, "copyediting" can including many things. If the article says something about the "kolour" of the flag, you can confidently correct to "colour". However, further "correction" of "colour" to "color" (or the other way around - I have no idea which is correct) should not be made unless you are sure that is the Philippine English usage.

Saying hello to the community

Hi, just saying that I've been a user on Wikipedia for 19 or so years, but have only occasionally edited or added an article. I have never engaged with the community much, but recently I have intensified my Wikipedia work somewhat and thus wanted to introduce myself -- I'm Podstawko (Adam in real life), work in IT but have a wide variety of interests otherwise, actually I suffer from overfocusing on new interests and falling into various rabbit holes. I would love to contribute to Wikipedia much more than I have so far. My contributions are split between Polish and English wikipedias, so I'll be building my reputation 2x slower than an average English contributor :) Some tips on where most help is needed would be welcome, I guess Wikipedia:Backlog is one of the places to go, any other hints? In any case, hello and happy to be a part of the Wikipedia Community! Podstawko (talk) 09:32, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, back! Even though you've been around for 19 years, welcome to the English Wikipedia, Podstawko. As far as what to do, you could check the Task center, and I also encourage you to sign up with or visit the project pages for various WP:WikiProjects, which will give you some ideas of things that need doing. Finally, there's User:SuggestBot, which will suggest some articles that may be of interest to you, based on your past editing history. Good luck! Mathglot (talk) 09:47, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
When I first got stuck into editing, I checked out SPECIAL:HOMEPAGE which you can set up and it gives you suggested articles to improve on varying levels of difficulty. Qcne (talk) 10:05, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As you are multilingual, you might want to have a look at pages needing translation; I am sure we have some articles which have been translated from Polish, and need some sprucing up. Example: Paprzyca coat of arms. Cheers. Lectonar (talk) 11:03, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Mathglot and Lectonar. Thank you for the tips; I have already bookmarked User:SuggestBot, Wikipedia:Task Center, Wikipedia:WikiProject and SPECIAL:HOMEPAGE, and based on Lectonar's advice I started looking into the translation needs and even suggested one of the new articles... for deletion! (Which is a first for me.) Exciting! Thank you again and I'm looking forward to contribute much more. Podstawko (talk) 13:20, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notable people

Is there any policy surrounding "notable people" lists in articles on cities? Should the lists themselves be included or not? If so, what constitutes notable; as in what is the scope – just born in the city, actively contributed to its history?

My question stems from an edit to the page on Oruro to include a person born in the city but who is otherwise only notable for actions in a different country entirely. I initially removed the entry, but the original editor correctly pointed out that the figure themself is notable, even if the connection to the city they're from is minimal. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 08:03, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Does WP:LISTPEOPLE help? There are some exceptions, but in general any list of people in an article should consist of blue links. Shantavira|feed me 08:31, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"Born in" is usually allowed to stand, even if notability occured when the person lived elsewhere. Another example is a notable person who lived in a community for a short period of time. This can be seen for professional athletes who move when traded to other teams, or no longer an active athlete. David notMD (talk) 09:43, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience, these lists usually lack clear inclusion criteria and reliable sources, and have a tendency to bloat over time. In my view, it would be better to cover this sort of content in prose, ideally using a small number of sources that explicitly discuss who's notable from a place, rather than with lists of everyone for whom there's a source saying they're from a place or lived there. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:23, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They can also be "included"by adding a city category to the people. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:33, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Krisgabwoosh their birthplace should be a certainty for inclusion, no matter what.
The place where they are raised should also be a certainty imo.
The place where they live or have lived as adults is the only questionable one, as some people move around more than others.
There's a few people who have popped into my head...
 • An actor/writer/comedian - Born in Bradford. Raised all over the place, but mainly in Pocklington. University educated in Manchester. And has lived in Exeter for most of his life. Bradford, Pocklington and Exeter can legitimately claim he's from there in a list, although Manchester is only worthy of a "educated at this university" category addition imo.
 • A former child TV actress, who now is a stage actress - Born somewhere in Southern Asia where there was a war (I can't remember where). Moved to Bradford when she was 7, and was raised here. And has lived in London for all her adult life. All 3 places can include her in a list imo.
 • A film and theatre actor - Born in Bradford. Moved to Dublin when he was 5, and was raised there. Lived in the USA for the rest of his life. Again, all 3 can claim he's from there in a list. However he will always be English to me, whether he claimed to be Irish or not, as birthplaces are the most important factor of nationality to me.
 • A film and TV actress from my city - Born in Bradford. Raised in Bradford. Lives in Bradford. However she lived in around 5 different neighbourhoods (some of which think they're separate from the city) growing up, one of which she can barely remember. Plus the one time she mentions it, the journalist who wrote the article spelt the neighbourhood incorrectly, so apparently it can't be used as proof according to some Wikipedia admins, even though there isn't a neighbourhood with that incorrectly spelt name in the city. With her it's much simpler to just say she's from the city as a whole, as trying to narrow it down to 1 specific neighbourhood (like some people like to do), when she's lived in 5 different neighbourhoods, will just cause arguments.
Danstarr69 (talk) 21:41, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to check out. I think I've come to the opinion that "notable people" lists do little that categories don't already, and contribute to bloat. In the absence of any standards prohibiting them, though, I guess I'll leave it at that.
P.S.: That last point about the neighborhood spelling gave me a chuckle. I love Wikipedia, but oh do we argue about nothing, ha, ha. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 01:01, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most readers are unlikely to look at the categories, but will see the lists. Kk.urban (talk) 05:49, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just to further bolster this point, I used to explore en.wiki via categories, but now that I primarily navigate in the mobile app, I honestly don't even know how to view categories on any given page: if available for mobile readers, they're certainly not prominent. A file has a very obviously wrong date

This file File:Dr. Heidi Bockhold Adjusts Horse.jpg says it comes from 30 November 1899. I think it is almost certainly 1999 considering the woman in question is currently alive https://optionsforanimals.com/about-us/faculty-and-staff-directory/dr-heidi-bockhold-dc/ and started her career in the 90s. I've emended the date in the Commons file. Deor (talk) 14:08, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To confuse this situation a bit further, it seems that the camera used was first introduced in 2007, meaning the photo couldn’t have been taken earlier than that year. — Mugtheboss (talk) 16:29, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll note that it once again says 1899, as the 1999 one was removed by an IP for the same reasons you stated (and somehow the original date is still there). – 2804:F14:80FB:2E01:9513:7B7D:14E3:DEDD (talk) 01:44, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

is there software to auto-format wiki-references?

I see, that some editors are able to qucikly create cited references in a complex formate like [1] . I wonder, if they use software, which allows for such automativ formtating. Walter Tau (talk) 16:03, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

 • @Walter Tau : There are many Citation tools that can help with this. Personally, I use ProveIt for most of my citations. It isn't perfect, but a lot faster than inputting everything manually. —Kusma (talk) 16:08, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thank you very much for your reply. I suspected, that something like Citation tools existed, but I did not know, what they were called. I shall look the links you provided. Let's make wiki better together :) Walter Tau (talk) 16:14, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Walter Tau: I make heavy use of toolbars to input references using the DOI or URL. But for books I use a google books link, and I would have to manually add the page number. Then later I run citation bot to fix dates and fill some other identifiers. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:00, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Like @Graeme Bartlett, I have also found the toolbar to be sufficient for creating citations. — Mugtheboss (talk) 16:37, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your responses. I my real life outside wiki, I use EndNote to format references in documents. Unfortunately, Clarivate would not accept my request to make an EndNote reference style for wikipedia. However, if Wikipedia Foundation makes such a request (there is no fees involved), Clarivate would honor such request. How do I get Wiki to make such request?

Hello, Walter Tau. and welcome to the Teahouse. I don't know if there is any way to do this, but the place to discuss it is at the village pump - not sure which section of it would be most appropriate. --ColinFine (talk) 17:18, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have also found that ChatGPT can convert a reference in text form to a templated wikitext form. However I do not know how reliable it is at that job as I have only done it a few times. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:35, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Walter Tau I am not sure if reFill is similar to what you are looking for, but I often use it myself to rapidly construct structured references from bare URLs. Hopefully it is of some use to you as well. ~Liancetalk 07:45, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

question about article

Hello,

The article trans genocide is protected so no one can edit it, and I’m curious why that is? I’m also afraid I don’t understand why the article exists, frankly. Are trans people being systematically murdered in an organized fashion? Abrolator (talk) 22:54, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Abrolator, and welcome to the Teahouse! The reason given in the most recent protection log entry is "Persistent vandalism". As for your your second question, I would suggest reading the article. Tollens (talk) 22:58, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I should also clarify - the current protection settings do not make it "so no one can edit it". Anyone with an account that is at least 4 days old and has made at least 10 edits can freely edit the article. Tollens (talk) 22:59, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The vast majority of active Wikipedia editors can edit that article, Abrolator. Those who can't because their accounts are very new are free to make policy compliant edit requests at Talk: Transgender genocide after reading the article. Cullen328 (talk) 01:32, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I did read the article and I am able to confirm that nowhere in the article is it written that trans people are being systemicatically murdered in an organized fashion. Would it be accurate to conclude, based on there being no statement in the article that trans people are being systematically murdered in an organized fashion, that trans people are not being systematically murdered in an organized fashion? The article certainly presents no evidence by reliable sources that trans people are being systematically murdered in an organized fashion. Abrolator (talk) 03:04, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Abrolator:
I believe one's conclusion after reading an article is solely up to themselves and their conscience. Wikipedia is not an authoritative source of information.
If you consider to change this article to any extent, you are welcome to propose your changes at the talk page of the article, as @Cullen328 suggested. Cheers, -- TheLonelyPather (talk) 03:36, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now that Abrolator has, following Cullen328's excellent suggestion, brought up his objection on the talk page, there's no point continuing this thread here. -- Hoary (talk) 05:42, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Abrolator, I would suggest that you refrain from making posts that repeat the same identical phrase four times. I perceive that as talking down to people. That degree of repetition is not persuasive but instead is somewhat irritating. Cullen328 (talk) 06:41, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

template for American football standings (historical)

I am working on some interconnected sports pages (in American intercollegiate sports) and am trying to add to a series of annual standings already in Wikipedia. I keep getting blocked, most recently by someone saying my submission is "contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia" or some such nonsense. There are already dozens, if not hundreds, of similar annual standings templates in Wikipedia, and I am only trying to add to them, reflecting my own research. How to I resolve this, or am I permanently blocked from doing so for some reason? Dracydni (talk) 18:41, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I noted two concerning things in your question. You stated that you were trying to "reflect your own research" which is not allowed as per Wikipedia:No original research. Additionally, you said that there were hundreds of other templates like the ones you were trying to create. You were trying to create an article, not a template, which require reliable sources, and not just a list of standings. I hope this helped you and happy editing! Industrial Insect (talk) 14:34, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have been editing the article "Indiana Intercollegiate Conference" and would like to add to the list of football standings at the bottom of the article. The standings for the years 1931-42, 1945, and 1946 are already there. For reasons I cannot understand, I am being blocked from adding other years as I compile those statistical facts.
I apologize for misusing the word "research." What I am doing is compiling statistical facts. There are no theories or opinions involved here. I'm just compiling wins and losses for football teams in the 1920s and 1930s. These are of the same nature as compilations of statistical facts that are already in Wikipedia (14 of them for this same conference, for the years noted above). I think one problem is that I am not using the proper terminology (article? template?) for what I am trying to do. The standings for each of the years has a stand-alone existence in Wikipedia so that seems to be where I have to start, but I can't get past the draft stage without having someone block me. For example, I have built 1928 to look just like the other years, and have the sources footnoted, but it is still sitting there in limbo.
I have put up new pages and made nearly 2,000 edits in the past, and I have never encountered this kind of obstacle. I would appreciate any help you might offer me. Dracydni (talk) 15:41, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dracydni I think the problem, from what I could see, Is that you were trying to make a new article instead of simply editing it. Also, it seems that the game standings are already in the article. Industrial Insect (talk) 14:06, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions to improve a Draft User:AKFkrewfamKF1/sandbox/KREW to replace current article KREW which is a stub

User:AKFkrewfamKF1/sandbox/KREW

I want this draft to replace the current KREW article, which is a stub article about a radio station. I noticed on Wikipedia:Processing drafts with duplicate titles that when a draft is better than the existing article, the existing article can be replaced with the draft. This is what I want.

The current article has only an infobox, 2 short paragraphs, and only a single reference. It is marked as a stub. My draft has actual headings and subheadings, 8 references, and much more content.

Still, I want to make sure this draft has the best chances possible of replacing the original article. Please leave any suggestions for improvement you may have. Any additional sources are also greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 19:49, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, AKFkrewfamKF1! Regarding your desire to replace the existing article, it's good that you've already found the guidance for handling name conflicts when creating articles. However, the section you're looking at doesn't apply, since your draft covers a different subject than the existing article. You should instead take a look at this section and be prepared to have your article renamed with a disambiguating word such as KREW (gamers) or similar. To learn more about how this works, please read the guidelines for determining which article is the primary topic for a name. Good luck, Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 20:24, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your suggestion. I guess the only way is if the original got deleted on WP:Notability. I do believe there is a chance as there is no significant coverage of the subject. Only the FCC page was referenced as a source, this is trivial coverage. I do not see how some small radio station in some small northwest Texan town can meet the notability standards (it certainly doesn't at the current point in time). AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 20:56, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome to nominate the original article for deletion, although that may be seen as somewhat untoward since you want the name for your draft article. There are other options; for example, when your article goes through the articles for creation process, it could be that your article gets the name on the strength of your notability arguments and the original article is renamed with a disambiguating word instead. But for now, my recommendation is to concentrate on refining your own article, and handle the naming when it's time to do so. Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 21:09, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The draft you've written being accepted doesn't depend in any way on the KREW article being deleted, AKFkrewfamKF1. Each article/topic stands on its own merits and there can be as many articles about things with the same name as there are notable topics with that name. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:15, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @AKFkrewfamKF1. Only if the existing article is poor enough to qualify for deletion ("lousy article") will the draft replace it. The purpose of Articles for Creation is to determine whether a topic qualifies for inclusion in Wikipedia. Since KREW already does, your work does not need to be reviewed. Instead just rework the existing article. This keeps previous editor's work in the history, rather than erasing it. StarryGrandma (talk) 20:26, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't read carefully enought. This doesn't apply since the topics are different. StarryGrandma (talk) 20:28, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AKFkrewfamKF1, you have proposed the existing KREW article, about the 70-year old radio station, for deletion. This is to make room for your draft article, Draft:Krew, about your group of Canadian YouTubers. That’s unnecessary- as noted above, you can give it a different title. I’m copying some of the editors of the radio station article so they are aware of the situation: @Karenthewriter, @Wcquidditch, @Rudy2alan and @User:Tdl1060.
A. B. (talkcontribsglobal count) 03:58, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AKFkrewfamKF1 I am confused by you stating that station KREW is in a "some small northwest Texan town" for Plainview, Texas is not only a city with a population of 20,000+ but it is also the county seat of Hale County. I feel the KREW article should remain, so I have been researching the station, and added additional content, as well as four new references. Though it still remains a stub article, I see no reason to delete it. If your draft article is accepted the two KREW article can still exist; one can become KREW (radio) and the other KREW (YouTube videos) or whatever the reviewer chooses to call them. Best wishes on all of your Wikipedia projects. Karenthewriter (talk) 14:18, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Redirecting

I'm trying to write a page for the first time, how do I make so someone will be redirected to my page if they type in a certain word or phrase? Welcome back bro (talk) 22:48, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Welcome back bro: Welcome to the Teahouse! See the information at WP:Redirect. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:20, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply, so in the brackets of this: #REDIRECT target page name here Would I place the page I want to redirect to or the page I want to redirect from? If it's the page I want to redirect to, how do I get it to redirect from a certain word or phrase? Thank you! Welcome back bro (talk) 02:15, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Welcome back bro: There are several examples on WP:Redirect, such as the page Colour contains #REDIRECT Color, which redirects you to the article called Color. GoingBatty (talk) 02:44, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Welcome back bro I see that you are working on Draft:Steklyannaya Garmonika (Film) and it may be that you are wondering how in future there could be a redirect to this from its English translation of "Glass Harmonica". This will be slightly more complicated than a simple redirect, as there is already an article at Glass harmonica. However, if I were you I wouldn't worry about that at present: concentrate on producing a decent article that meets our notability requirements at WP:NFILM. Redirects and disambiguation pages come later. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:31, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Featured list needing fixes

I will need to make some edits to List of municipalities in Florida. The areas are out of date, and need an update based on the 2020 US Census Gazetteer. However, the area column of the table needs to be sortable - at the moment, it is sorting incorrectly because it contains both numbers and text - so it probably needs the nts template. I am also not sure if it should have a single column for area in both sqmi and km2, or separate columns for each. Which option seems better? Are these issues enough to demote it from featured list? Kk.urban (talk) 05:11, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Did you look at Template:Convert#Sorting? Looks like this is what you want, as the generated sortkey is calculated in based on both the value and its unit as passed to the convert template. Podstawko (talk) 05:50, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Podstawko Great, that is exactly what I want! Do you think there should be two column headers, "area (sq mi)" and "area (km2)", or would it be better with two rows for the header cell, like on List of cities in Alaska? Kk.urban (talk) 05:57, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this is a preferential choice. The template I mentioned should work even if you keep both units in one cell (note that I haven't tried). Podstawko (talk) 06:14, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "a preferential choice"? Kk.urban (talk) 06:18, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I mean I don't think there is a style guide entry on whether units should be put in separate columns vs in a single one. At least there's nothing on that subject in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables#Sortability. The guide does contain advice on sortability though. Podstawko (talk) 08:28, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The other issue you raise is about updating for the 2020 Census. According to this edit, it was "updated a while ago". DMacks (talk) 08:29, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The population was updated, but not the area. Kk.urban (talk) 16:04, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Making a page about someone

Hello,

I am new to wikipedia, but I want to create and edit pages about women I find inspiring. I have tried to study the guidelines the best I can, but sorry if I've made any mistakes. I would like to begin with a page about Zenna Hopson. I have previously worked for her, but am no longer employed by her. She is not paying me to do this, and she does not know I am doing this.

I belive her many public institutional roles make her suitably notable for a wikipedia page She was formerly chair of OFSTED in the uk and she served as a non-executive director on the board of the Royal Navy for 10 years and chaired their audit committee. She has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Portsmouth University. She is currently CEO of charity Dallaglio Rugbyworks. Zenna also makes frequent media appearances such as Sky News and LBC.

Zenna is the neice of the famous British intelligence officer Vera Atkins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Atkins and she is the daughter of Guy Atkins, a scholar and expert in West African languages, he was the author of Manding Art and Civilization. I beleive at some point he would also be a suitable candidate for a wikipedia page due to his incredible contribution to the study of West African cultures.

If you feel this might be a suitable page, I can provide verifiable links for all of this information and I would ensure to write in a neutral tone.

Thank you so much for reading my message, any advice or help with this is very welcome. Audra AudraNoble1990 (talk) 07:56, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AudraNoble1990, and welcome to the Teahouse! Before you start working on a draft, I just want to make sure you understand the notability requirements for people, as they aren't particularly intuitive. Wikipedia's rules are designed in such a way that all the information in an article must be verifiable, and so the notability guidelines require that the person has received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources before an article can be written, not that they have done something worthy of note as the typical sense of the word would be. In addition, because you know this person, you likely know much more about them than is written down - this information also may not be included in an article as readers and other editors have no way of verifying the statements made. This rule is much more stringent for articles about living people in order to protect the subject of the article - it will be significantly easier to write the article if you find sources first, then write the article based only on those sources, rather than the other way around. If you believe they meet the notability requirements, you can use the article wizard to create a draft page that you can work on, then submit for review when you're ready. Tollens (talk) 08:13, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, AudraNoble1990. The relevant notability guideline is WP:NPERSON. Serving as an appointed official in a agency like Ofsted is not, in itself, evidence of notability. Chairing the audit committee of the Royal Navy is not evidence of notability. Having a famous uncle and father is definitely not evidence of notability. Literally the only thing that matters is whether or not Zenna Hopson is the subject of significant coverage in reliable published sources that are entirely independent of Zenna Hopson. If so, you format those sources into references, and then neutrally summarize what they say, and you have an acceptable Wikipedia article. If the sources are lacking, then it is simply not possible to write an acceptable Wikipedia article. Focus on high quality sources, because they are like gold on Wikipedia. Literally everything else is trivial in comparison. Cullen328 (talk) 08:19, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328Thank you so much for reading my post and getting back to me with this advice. I completely understand your point and I will make sure to look for credible sources and draft a neutral summary as you suggest. thank you! AudraNoble1990 (talk) 10:09, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tollens thank you so much for your advice. The notability requirements are certainly confusing. I will start researching the sources and think about whether there is enough evidence to draft a page. Thank you so much for your help. AudraNoble1990 (talk) 10:08, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is also worth noting that anyone will subsequently be able to edit that article and she may not thank you for it as having a Wikipedia article about you is not necessarily a good thing. Shantavira|feed me 08:41, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help in uploading image of painting

Hello wikipedia

I have encountered difficulties in understanding the proper way of uploading images of paintings to wikimedia. I have recieved written and oral permission from the heirs of the artists to upload selected images. This is part of a project seeking to raise awareness of Jewish/Israeli art, specifically in the North of Israel.

Thank you for your time. Homerethegreat (talk) 09:12, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Homerethegreat Wikipedia does not deal with freely licenced image uploads. This happens at Wikimedia Commons. Even there they do not care about a project seeking to raise awareness of Jewish/Israeli art, specifically in the North of Israel.. What they care about is correct permissions and licencing.
You will need to visit c:COM:VRT and follow the process outlined there 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 09:34, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Homerethegreat Thanks for wanting to contribute. This area is a bit complicated, but it can be done. Reflinks tool

What happened to the Reflinks tool? Anytime I try to load it, it does not load and I get the message: This site can’t be reached - 69.142.160.183 took too long to respond. It is a great tool that I use for every article. Will it be fixed? Are any of the Featured Article Tools working? TwoScars (talk) 14:44, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TwoScars: Reflinks was a great tool, but the creator is no longer active on Wikipedia. There are other tools such as reFill that you might like to try. No matter what tool you use, understand that it will make some mistakes which you should correct before saving your edit. GoingBatty (talk) 17:47, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Free use rationale"

Hello. I am currently writing a draft and if it is published I would like to add a logo to the infobox. I understand that I will need to use the free use rationale template as I did it once before, but last time it was for a non-profit group and this time I do not understand what I need to do for the "commercial" bit.

It says "explain why our use of the file will not unduly infringe on any commercial interests of its copyright holders, by competing with the work's original market role.") but I don't understand why it would "compete" if it's just being used on a Wikipedia article. Thank you a lot. -- NotCharizard 🗨 15:33, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In general, if you're unclear on how to use a template, you can use the "What links here" option in the sidebar to find pages that already use the template and learn from their example. For this case, the template parameter in question is meant to be used on images that could have commercial value, for instance File:The_Sydney_Morning_Herald_front_page.jpg is a photo of a newspaper, and the commercial value of a newspaper mostly comes from being able to read the text on it, so the explanation notes it is too low resolution for that use. For images that lack commercial value, like the logo you mention probably does, the field is left blank or "n.a." WelpThatWorked (talk) 15:49, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, so it's not really so aplicable in the case of a logo? That makes sense. Thank you so much! -- NotCharizard 🗨 04:29, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Notcharizard: I find it's easiest to use the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard when uploading non-free images such as logos. The wizard will prompt you for what needs to be filled out. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:45, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Notcharizard I think you can actually upload that logo on Commons, see licensing etc on this example:File:Livingston International 2023 logo.jpg. Here is a logo-example on WP:File:History of Diving Museum logo.png. Note that non-free images must only be added to mainspace, not drafts. Made required revisions to my article, how to see the status of the draft?

I made revisions required by Wikipedia and uploaded an edited version of this draft last week. Where can I check the status of the article? How long does it take for revised drafts to be reviewed? Tachycardia512 (talk) 15:52, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Tachycardia512. The sataus of Draft:Joyce University of Nursing and Health Sciences is that you have not resubmitted it. I have restored the decline notice (which you improperly removed) and with it the "resubmit" button.
However, it is unlikely to be accepted unless you format the references properly, as suggested by Theroadislong, and check that most of the references meet the golden rule. ColinFine (talk) 16:06, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tachycardia512, You haven't resubmitted the draft for review. Also, there are many articles waiting review so it will take at least days or few months for someone to review your draft.
Also, your article still has many problems. There are still some promotional content and you haven't referenced the article properly. I suggest looking at WP:REFB; suggested by Theroadislong. Regards. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 16:11, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

TV Show scheduled for speedy deletion

I started a TV show and I tried to make a Wiki article about it but it was tagged for speedy deletion. Did I do something wrong? 75.134.76.134 (talk) 18:00, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. You haven't said which article (and if it's been deleted, I won't be able to look at it anyway) but it is likely that you did the following things "wrong":
 • trying to use Wikipedia for promotion
 • trying to create an article about a subject which does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability.
 • trying to create an article about a subject where you have a conflict of interest (this is not forbidden, but it is discouraged, and there are restrictions)
 • writing an article based on what you know rather than on what independent reliable sources say.
Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If you cannot find such sources, then there cannot be an article. ColinFine (talk) 18:09, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation page needed for Krew. Should the current redirect be turned into a disambiguation page, or should a new Krew (disambiguation) page be created?

I noticed this after creating a userspace draft for Krew, which I called User:AKFkrewfamKF1/sandbox/KREW that I submitted for review. But that name was in conflict with the article KREW, about a radio station, so it was moved to Draft:Krew (Youtube group) by the reviewer. But I chose the all caps version because the page Krew is currently a redirect to Krewe. There is also a KR3W article about a clothing company.

Clearly a disambiguation page is needed here. But I do not know whether the page Krew (currently a redirect to Krewe) should be turned into a disambiguation page, or if a new Krew (disambiguation) page should be created. The user who moved the article cited Krewe as the primary page, but it is ranked a low importance by the project and by WikiProject Louisiana (mid importance by WikiProject Louisiana - New Orleans, but that is a very specific topic). Any help in deciding would be appreciated.

Pages that would be included in this disambiguation page are reincluded below for refference:

 1. Draft:Krew (Youtube group) (this is a draft currently, but would be included if approved. Not in any importance category yet due to being a draft.)
 2. Krewe (ranked low importance by wikipedia, low importance by WikiProject Louisiana, mid importance by WikiProject Louisiana - New Orleans. Considered a stub.)
 3. KREW (ranked low importance by Wikipedia, low imporance by WikiProject Texas. Considered a stub. Currently proposed to be deleted.)
 4. KR3W (ranked low importance by WikiProject Companies, low importance by WikiProject California, mid importance by WikiProject Skateboarding. Considered a stub.)
 5. Probably many more pages that I am not aware of, considering the generality of the word Krew.

AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 18:46, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@AKFkrewfamKF1 I think you are correct that a disambiguation page should be made here, and you can start it if you like. I think Krew should probably then redirect to the disamb page, but I'm not 100% sure. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:03, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, this move was previously requested on 23 June 2021 on the article's Talk page, discussed, and unanimously opposed. It does not fit with Wikipedia's standard practices.
Wikipedia titles its articles with the most commonly used English-language terms for the subject (see WP:Common name), though it uses redirects to recognise others searched for, and it reflects real-world usages; it does not attempt to change them by adopting different ones, however virtuous. Adding sections to categories

Those pages are redirects that have been added to the category, 2019 Hartford mayoral election (automatic redirection disabled for that link) as an example. Redirects can be added to categories in the exact same way as normal articles. Tollens (talk) 00:27, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

sorry, the teahouse only deals with questions relating to wikipedia editing. ltbdl (talk) 02:04, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ngeralite. I assume this is about Draft:Briann Kearney (producer). Since it was moved to draft and didn't go through the usual process, please read Wikipedia:Articles for creation for what to expect and what to do. You have already started the article. There is now a template at the top of the page that will let you submit it for review and you will get feedback. However there is a lot of work to be done before it is ready, and for help the template at the top of the draft has a "Where to get help" section.
You have sections labeled "Extract". It looks like you are copying in material from other places before writing about it. While this is a common way to proceed, you MAY NOT do that here on Wikipedia since we can't have copyrighted materials here and everything in Draft space is public. Please remove any such extracts. You will have to do that offline. StarryGrandma (talk) 02:47, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Process of removing Templates?

Hello!

While I know the process for removing templates like AfD are usually talk page discussions, or removing maintenance templates tends to be a best judgement - what is the process for removing more intense templates like Undisclosed Paid?

An example: I'd like to fix any of the issues with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation article, since it has had an Undisclosed Paid template since 2020. I'm not affiliated with CNCF nor have I ever contributed to CNCF's projects but I think open source work is important (and so is having accurate, unbiased Wiki articles). However, if I do spend time contributing to cleaning up the article and making sure it is more NPOV do I need to open discussion on the talk page for the Undisclosed Paid template to be removed?

No worries if there isn't concrete guidelines on this sort of thing. Just genuinely curious. Thanks! Lightcrowd (talk) 01:59, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Lightcrowd. You should try to analyze the article history, identify the likely undisclosed paid editors, and take a careful look at their contributions. Remove any promotional content and remove sources that are not reliable, along with content referencd to such sources unless you can find better ones. I think posting on the article talk page is a good idea. Once you have allowed a few days for comments, go ahead and remove the tag if no one disagrees. Cullen328 (talk) 03:32, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice! Lightcrowd (talk) 09:24, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PDX5354 is the creator of the article and author of nearly all prose on the current page. Their talk page says that "they have been paid by The Rust Foundation for their contributions to Wikipedia" so you'll need to go through the whole article minus the "Cilium" and "Istio" sections. Good luck, Lightcrowd! Rjjiii(talk) 08:32, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thanks for the help. This actually helps a lot, I know it means a much larger re-write than I was hoping but at least I have a starting point! Lightcrowd (talk) 09:25, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

how to rate articles, e.g., B-scale, C-scale?

Hi, can you point me to a how-to page for adding ratings to articles? And to reviewing articles? There is so much on Wikipedia that I find this process mystifying I have a sense of what the rating system is but not how to add a rating to an article. Thanks! CallMeBarcode (talk) 03:28, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, CallMeBarcode. Please read Wikipedia:Content assessment. To be frank, these assessments are not very important, except for Good articles and Featured articles. The difference between Start, C and B is negligible and highly subjective. I often upgrade articles marked as stubs to Start, but otherwise I pay little attention to it all. That's my view. Other editors may disagree. Cullen328 (talk) 03:41, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I will try that. CallMeBarcode (talk) 04:18, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How should citations to the Talmud be formatted?

I want to clean up and improve citations to the Talmud, but I don't know how to acccomodate the traditional citation system within Wikipedia's templates.

Background: References to the Talmud invariably mean the Talmud Bavli, the Babylonian Talmud, although it might be specifically identified as such to avoid potential ambiguity. There is another work called the Jerusalem Talmud, which would usually be identified as such. I don't propose to address citation to the Jerusalem Talmud at present, because it's a less standardised system.

Citations to the Babylonian Talmud consist of a volume name, e.g. Bava Batra, and followed by a folio/side number, such as 91a or 12b. This uses the pagination of the standard text, the Vilna Edition Shas. There are many modern editions of this work by different publishers, and several translations. The original (Aramaic) text is almost always identical across editions, but the translations are of course different.

Consequently, it seems to me that a correct citation to the Babylonian Talmud would include:

Where the reference is to the original text:

 • The book: Talmud Bavli or Bablylonian Talmud
 • The volume: Bava Batra or whatever
 • The folio reference: 91a, 12b, or whatever

Additionally, where the reference is to a translation, or a particular edition of the original text:

 • Publisher
 • Name of edition
 • and (possibly) Translator

And of course if the work is online:

 • URL

So a complete reference IMO would be something like:

Talmud Bavli, Bava Batra 91a, The William Davidson digital edition of the Koren Noé Talmud, Sefaria.org

The particular problems I have had are distinguishing between the title of the text ("Babylonian Talmud, Bava Batra") and the title of the edition ("William Davidson Digital Edition"), as well as using the name of a volume ("Bava Batra") rather than a number ("7"). Any suggestions as to how I can best accommodate this within (e.g.) Wikipeda's template:Cite book would be appreciated. Joe in Australia (talk) 06:02, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cullen328 (talk) 06:12, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Cullen328. I wasn’t aware of that template, so thanks! It does solve part of my problem (standardising bare references to the Talmud) but it doesn’t seem to provide a way to link to an online copy. How would one go about proposing an amendment, just suggest it in the talk page? Would I get in trouble if I edited the template to add e.g. fields for an URL and publication data? Alternatively, is there a way to combine two Template:cites in one reference? Joe in Australia (talk) 09:26, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see the draft now so I can't really say anything about that, but if one of the reasons why you wanted to have an article is to advertise or promote something, please note that it's not the best idea, as apart from it not being allowed due to policy there are also reasons why you may not want one in the first place. if you have any other questions regarding this, please feel free to ask here. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 06:14, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You don't appear to have asked a question; is there something you need help with? Tollens (talk) 06:15, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Khannark, I am an administrator and read your deleted draft. It was a non-neutral, highly promotional hagiography crammed full of lavish praise. It was utterly inappropriate for a neutrally written encyclopedia. Cullen328 (talk) 06:22, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Cullen328,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to address the recent speedy deletion nomination of my user sandbox, User:Khannark/sandbox, I understand the importance of adhering to Wikipedia's guidelines and policies and want to clarify my intentions.
First and foremost, I have no intention of violating Wikipedia's guidelines or policies. My purpose in creating the sandbox was to prepare and draft an article about a notable surgeon in accordance with Wikipedia's content guidelines. If any aspects of the sandbox appeared to be in violation of Wikipedia's goals or policies, I sincerely apologize, as this was purely unintentional.
I would like to request an opportunity to create a new article from scratch, ensuring that it complies with Wikipedia's guidelines and policies. I am committed to following all relevant Wikipedia guidelines in this endeavor.
I genuinely appreciate your assistance and understanding in this matter. Wikipedia is a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, and I am eager to contribute constructively to it.
Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to your guidance on how to proceed.
Sincerely,

Khannark, my advice is simple and brief: Always comply rigorously with the Neutral point of view, which is a core content policy. Cullen328 (talk) 07:13, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Khannark, and welcome to the Teahouse. I am not an admin, so I cannot see the deleted draft; but I'm guessing that you made the same mistake as almost all new editors do when they try to create an article: you wrote what you know and believe about the subject.
Wikipedia is not interested in what you know and believe about a subject (or what I know and believe about it, or what any other random person on the internet knows and believes). It is interested only in what has been reliably published about the subject by people wholly unconnected with them.
So the way to write an article is to start by finding sources about the subject which satisfy the golden rule. Only when you have found several of these is there any point in writing anything at all (because if you cannot find them, you'll know that the subject does not currently meet Wikipedia's criteria for notbility, and any further time you spend on this will be effort wasted).
If you have found these sources, you can start writing: write in your own words what those sources say. That's it. Even if you think they are wrong: unless you can find another reliable source that says what you think is the case, you should not "correct" them. Even if they say something that you really really don't think should be in the article, if the reliable sources say it (and it is encyclopaedic) then you should put it in. That's what a neutral point of view means. ColinFine (talk) 09:33, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Submission review to Mainspace

Can I move a draft that I have submitted for review to mainspace before the review process? If yes, I need to remove the Draft and AfC tags from the article before moving it, right? Also will there by any other entries that I need to make changes on w.r.t my submission. Draft:Suresh Selvarajan. Jeraxmoira (talk) 06:24, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jeraxmoira Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Unless you have much experience having drafts accepted, it is highly recommended that you allow the review process to play out. It's even more important to use the process if you have a conflict of interest. It's better to find out problems with the draft first, rather than later as an article. However, if you are confident the draft would survive a hypothetical Articles for Deletion discussion, you are probably fine to move it. 331dot (talk) 06:31, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. The article was created forward and I am sure it passes GNG. I am more concerned about the stray entries that it may leave behind because of the submission review. From the 'What links here' page [1] I can see a lot links. Is there a bot to clean up the entries after I move it? Or should I do it myself? Example: Wikipedia:AfC sorting & User:SDZeroBot/Pending AfC submissions. Please advise <3 Jeraxmoira (talk) 07:05, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would be more concerned about whether the draft establishes that the subject is notable. I haven't checked all the references, but those that I did check either weren't independent of the subject, or lacked extensive discussion of him. Maproom (talk) 07:40, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have replied here here regarding WP:N. Jeraxmoira (talk) 08:13, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
please note that interviews are NOT reliable independent sources. Theroadislong (talk) 08:20, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Given that this is your first effort at creating an article. I strongly recommend going through AfC versus moving it to mainspace. The latter path could result in the article moved back to draft or even nominated for deletion as part of the New Pages Patrol process. David notMD (talk) 11:00, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I already have two articles in main space and they were created directly. I wanted to know how the review process worked and that's why I submitted this one. Per the discussion here, I guess it doesn't exactly pass GNG but still goes through on WP:CREATIVE Jeraxmoira (talk) 12:01, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies, I missed that in looking at your history of edits. There is a backlog of ~4,000 submitted AfC draft, but the system is not a queue. Reviewers pick what they want to do next. So, could be days, weeks, or sadly, months. Per comments by Theroadislong, consider trying to strengthen refs while waiting for a review. I note that refs 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 are about one film, so you have little on other parts of his career. David notMD (talk) 13:47, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the inputs, I am working on expanding the article further. Just a question here, WP:CREATIVE is applicable even when its only about one particular notable film/ body of work, right? Do reviewers accept an article when it fails GNG but passes WP:CREATIVE? Or is WP:CREATIVE only used as a point on AfDs Jeraxmoira (talk) 04:53, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not the reviewer, but I'll have a go at giving advice. In order for there to be a Wikipedia page about an actor, they need to have passed the WP:NACTOR criteria. However most of your sources are The Times of India, which is generally regarded as an unreliable source for entertainment news articles, see WP:TOI. I would want to see significant coverage of Shine Shetty in reliable, independent (not interviews or press releases) sources. Qcne (talk) 12:16, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After having a look, 1. I determined that the subject has only played minor roles in most of the movies he has been on. Apart from him winning the Bigg Boss Kannada season 7 there sourcing for the article is poor. He maybe notable but again the sourcing is a problem.
2. The sources used are generally unreliable as cited by another editor above. Jamiebuba (talk) 14:59, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Column Widths

List of James Bond novels and short stories

I've tried to edit the column widths. I had some success with style="min-width: 600px;" and style="min-width: 60em;" in Column6 (in preview), but I can't restrict the width of Column1.

Can it be done... can you do it? MBG02 (talk) 14:32, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

By "restrict", do you mean making it wider or narrower, and as compared with the default or compared with the longest title? I see a few nowrap that may interfere with narrowing. DMacks (talk) 15:33, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I meant "restrict" to a max width... i.e. make it narrower. Removing nowrap fixed it. (In my opinion). Thanks.
The font in the Plot column appears larger in my iPhone, but not in my iPad. I'll let someone else decide if that needs amending. MBG02 (talk) 18:23, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Validating family tree in MyHeritage

I am an 81 year old man and have been working on my family tree for several years using MyHeritage and FamSearch. Is there a way to validate ancestry using Wikipedia? I am using only direct blood relatives to build the tree (No siblings or adoptions), just going back in history with fathers and mothers. Because MyHeritage shows family histories from other users of the program, they often contain faulty information that leads me astray. Any ideas for validating the "real" links to my ancestors? Iamddo (talk) 15:51, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Iamddo: Hello and welcome to the teahouse. Please be mindful that Wikipedia is not an authoritative source on ancestry. It is based on volunteer input, which is based on the reliable sources they find on the internet. Besides, the majority of people (including yours truly here) would probably not satisfy the notability requirement of Wikipedia and not be included on the website.
Have a great day! --TheLonelyPather (talk) 15:58, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As TLP says, Wikipedia cannot be used to validate anything with any certainty. I wonder whether you have tried Ancestry.com, which has a good reputation. Shantavira|feed me 16:02, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have access to most of the genealogical websites, including the Mormon records. @Iamddo: When you find information in a Wikipedia article about someone in your family tree, I recommend reviewing the reliable published source that accompanies the statements in the article for validation. If a source is missing for a given statement, feel free to add citation needed next to the statement, and hopefully another editor will provide a source. @UnexpectedSmoreInquisition One way is to create a redlink and then click on that. So User:UnexpectedSmoreInquisition/Newsandbox would do the trick. There should be a forward slash (/) after your username and before the name you wish to use. Note that clicking the link I made here also provides the link to the Help Page.... Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:26, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Much obliged. UnexpectedSmoreInquisition (talk) 17:30, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict × 2) after 2 edit conflicts I'll just add that the guideline for creating subpages is WP:SUB, and it says that you can freely make subpages of your own user page. So you can put it pretty much anywhere you like under your user page, e.g. User:UnexpectedSmoreInquisition/sandbox2 - Astrophobe (talk) 17:32, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
though @UnexpectedSmoreInquisition, please note that other sandboxes do not show up on the top bar like your main sandbox User:UnexpectedSmoreInquisition/sandbox, so you may want to leave a link somewhere like that sandbox or your userpage so you don't lose it. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:13, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can't really lose a user subpage. If you go to Special:Contributions and scroll all the way to the bottom, the first link in the navigation box after the username is titled "Subpages", and will show a list of pages in the user's space, like Special:PrefixIndex/User:Melecie/ or Special:PrefixIndex/User:UnexpectedSmoreInquisition/. Folly Mox (talk) 04:49, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

I found what appears to be pretty balant vandalism on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=CIA_and_the_Cultural_Cold_War&oldid=1171404245 under the section of CIA and music composition while reading the page.

I was trying to find a wiki project to bring attention to this page but it appears the Cold War wikiproject is dead.

Could I get some assistance in this regard? AevumNova (talk) 19:35, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the revision is no longer in the page, but I might suggest asking an administrator on their talk page (say, one of these) if this warrants WP:RVDL. - Astrophobe (talk) 20:09, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Astrophobe I don't think REVDEL is quite warranted in this instance.
However, AevumNova, you could easily have reverted the vandalism yourself, simply by going to the View History tab and seeing the table of edits (most recent at the top). Each one has an 'undo' link next to it, and you are free to revert a damaging edit. It helps to leave a brief edit summary like "rv vandalism" to explain why you are undoing the previous edit. You are free to warn an editor if you remove a bad edit (though it's too late to worry about that now in this instance). You can use TWINKLE to make leaving templated messages quicker and easier. There's guidance on dealing with vandalism at WP:RVAN. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 20:30, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'm still very confused by a lot of wikipedia policies so I greatly appreciate your help! AevumNova (talk) 20:34, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Use of cite web

I would like to use the cite web template to cite some interviews. I wish to make clear that what is cited comes from the interviewer not the interviewee. I am not sure that if I just add the editor field to the citation this is clear. This for a WP:BLP. I believe that things said by the interviewer are less likely to be judged as self-promotion than things mentioned by the interviewee. Any advice? Oldsilenus (talk) 22:13, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Oldsilenus and welcome to the Teahouse. Use Template:Cite interview instead. It has fields for the interviewer and for the subject. StarryGrandma (talk) 01:18, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
User:Oldsilenus, whichever citation template you use, you'll still have to clarify in the prose that the statement you're referring to was made by the interviewer rather than the interviewee, but unless the interviewer is very experienced or an investigative journalist they are likely to speak highly of the subject during the interview. It's a fairly natural phenomenon and a professional courtesy. Folly Mox (talk) 05:06, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP editor, and welcome to the Teahouse. To clarify Stewpot's answer: I don't think they are suggesting that Keens-Douglas is or isn't notable, rather than it's your job as the person who wants to write the article to determine whether they meet the criteria.
If you read the policy, and think you've found suitable sources, but you're not sure, then I suggest you come back here with your three best sources, and somebody will probably be willing to look at them and tell you if they think they're enough. (Remember that notability, in Wikipedia's sense, is all about sources, not about what the subject is or has done). ColinFine (talk) 08:56, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

'Semantic Web Tags' and 'Wiki Markup' should I use a combination, or Wiki Markup exclusively?

September 19, 2023

To: Wiki Community TeaHouse: Question about 'Semantic Web Tags' and 'Wiki Markup'

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Th74/sandbox&redirect=no

Titled: Draft: List of Greek New Testament Print Editions (16th century)

I'm in the process of making a Wiki Page and I'm not quite sure how to handle 'Semantic Web Tags' and 'Wiki Mark Up'. I'm making a Bibliographic Index which is, basically, Bibliographic Citation Data, broken up into its components with each part of the citation in individual table cells so a person can search by any component. There is one citation per row. An example would be that a person can search by date, or by publisher etc.

I read that WikiData's web-bots crawl all the content of Wikipedia each night to extract usable data, especially links.

To cooperate with this goal, I took the trouble to add 'Semantic Web Tags' to all the citation components. After this was completed, I discovered that Wikipedia uses an entirely different method: 'Wiki Mark Up'.

My question is: Should I strip out all my Semantic Web Tags, and go with Wiki Markup exclusively, or should I leave the Semantic Web Tags in and use an alternate tag for the prohibited <a> tag?

Additional Facts:

I noticed that in the 'Edit Source' mode, the Wiki Markup, ignores the Semantic Web Tags, except for a few prohibited ones, such as the <a> tag but I could use an alternate tag for <a>.

Here is an example of my 'Editor' Cell with Semantic Web Tags [Oops!, when I copy and pasted it into this box, all my Semantic Web Tags are gone. Click on the 'Source' tab above to see them.]:

de Cisneros, Francisco Jiménez

(1436-1517)

|Wiki-ID

|OCLC-ID

And here is the Wikipedia 'Edit Source' cell content [Oops!, when I copy and pasted it into this box, all my Semantic Web Tags are gone. Click on the 'Source' tab above to see them.]:

|-

| <span property="foaf:person" resource="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Jim%C3%A9nez_de_Cisneros"><span property="foaf:family_name"><span property="foaf:givenname"><span property="schema:additionalName"><span property="gndo:dateOfBirth"><span property="gndo:dateOfDeath"><span property="schema:editor" resource="https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJvHhjFHYjM3PTRHJ6jpyd/">de Cisneros, Francisco Jiménez</span></span></span></span></span></span></span>

(1436-1517)
Wiki-ID

OCLC

And here is the same cell with all the 'Semantic Web Tags' removed:

|-
| de Cisneros, Francisco Jiménez (1436-1517)

Wiki-ID

OCLC

As you can see, a lot of detailed information is lost when I remove the Semantic Web Tags. I was thinking that if I can use a combination of Semantic Web Tags and Wiki Markup, then the WikiData bots will be able to harvest a lot more information.

Any advice and guidance you could provide would be appreciated.

sincerely Robert Crawford user: Th74

Melecie: I haven't read all that. In a Wikipedia article, you should never use <a href="...">. If the link is to another Wikipedia article, you should use a "wikilink", with double square brackets. Can't tell if a certain page is published or not

I'm currently working on a draft (Draft:Steklyannaya Garmonika (Film) - Wikipedia) because I believed there was no page existing for the movie. If you type the name of the movie in Wikipedia it says the page does not exist. Somehow, I came across this: Glass Harmonica (cartoon) - Wikipedia which has a "current" and a "stable" version, whatever that means. Trying to search for this specific page yields nothing, but the page doesn't say that it is a draft too. What is this page, and does its existence change anything about my plans for my own draft? Welcome back bro (talk) 02:51, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Welcome back bro and welcome to the Teahouse! the existing article is on the Russian Wikipedia, which is pretty much its own project separate from the English Wikipedia, and is on Russian instead of English. if you couldn't search it here in the English Wikipedia, it probably doesn't exist here so it's still alright for you to make your draft even if there's an existing article in another language. the "current" and "stable" versions refer to whether a certain revision is patrolled, which if I understand it correctly is a process that does exist in the English Wikipedia though in a different and less restrictive form (we only patrol new pages, and while we also do have a similar system of pending changes, it only affects some articles, not all of them). happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 03:00, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Welcome back bro Your search led you to one of the other-language versions of an article about that film. The links between these versions are stored in Wikidata, specifically for that film here. Knowing this might help with your draft because it reveals that there are also versions in Dutch and Polish. Any one of these might suggest sources. Once your draft is accepted into English Wikipedia, it too should be linked to Q3124959. Meanwhile I suggest you read MOS:PLOT as I think the section on the plot you currently have, at ~900 words, is a bit too long. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:45, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm back after 15 years, and I have a question about removing edits

I used this account when I was a little boy. I just recovered it and logged in for the first time in 15 years. This is cool.

I looked through my old edits, and I saw one in which I shared some information that I shouldn't have. Live and learn, it was over half a lifetime ago. Is there a way that a moderator can completely remove an edit, as if it never existed, such that others can't see it by looking through an edit history?

Hi Deanjones12. It sounds like you might be misunderstanding some important things about Wikipedia. In addition, to the information provided about, you might also want to take a look at Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. The last two are particularly important since any information you try add about your company to Wikipedia is almost certainly going to be considered a conflict of interest and also fall under Wikipedia's policy on paid editing. If after reading those pages, you still feel Wikipedia should have an article about your company, feel free to come back to the Teahouse and ask additional questions. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:28, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That question should have been answered by Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), which states A company, corporation, organization, group, product, or service is presumed notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject. If such sources exist for the company you work for (like they do for Retailmenot - scroll down to the bottom of that article for the list), an article is acceptable. However, if such sources do not exist, an article may not be included. Tollens (talk) 05:01, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An administrator deleted my photo based on false assumptions

Hello Wiki friends,

My name is Amin. Yesterday I received a message from a Wiki administrator, claiming that I had uploaded a photo to Wikipedia “primarily for the purpose of insulting, demeaning, or defaming a person..”.. The administrator deleted the photo without giving me a opportunity to discuss it.

The administrator deleted the photo based on his assumptions that were incorrect. I had uploaded that photo with the full permission of my friend, and it was intended to inform, and not to insult or defame anyone. My friend who was in the picture and I both had a laugh about it. By now you must be curious about the photo. As it has been deleted by the administrator, you can still see a screenshot here, on a tweet that happened to go a bit viral, and my reply-tweet here.

I feel the administrator was wrong to delete the photo without any discussion. I would like to restore it. What would be my next step to do that? I welcome any help.

And if the administrator was right to delete it, I could accept that too. But I’d like to understand his arguments better. Because right now I feel they’re based on false assumptions and accusations. Small things like this slowly suck the fun out of reading and editing Wikipedia.

Thanks, Amin (Talk) 09:53, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Amin. You uploaded the picture to Wikimedia Commons, not to Wikipedia, and it was there that it was deleted. See the message on your Commons user talk page c:User talk:Amin, and address any comments or questions you have to Commons, which is a separate project from Wikipedia. History of the Philippines

In reading History of the Philippines, I noticed lots and lots of places where it seemed to me to need copyediting. I decided to do that. However, when I began editing, I noticed a line near the top of the editing page that said, "." This led me to stop editing, abandon any changes I had made, and come here for clarification. I understand there are allowances for British vs. American English, but what about Philippines English? Is that even a thing? Although I live in the Phils, I am not ethnically a Filipino. I know well that English as used orally by Filipinos is different from how Americans use it, but does that legitimize it for use on Wikipedia? If it does, I will just keep my white nose out of it. If not, I will proceed as I began. I have a second, related question. If I am making lots of small edits, maybe even a couple hundred, do I a) enter and save them together as one very long edit, b) make each a separate edit, or c) somewhere in between the two? Dgndenver (talk) 12:43, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dgndenver, like you, I know nothing of Philippine English, so I'll just answer your second question. I would make the edits in batches, of several on the same issue, or several in one section, with edit summaries that explain what they have in common. A snag with submitting too many at once is that another editor who disagrees with one change may revert the whole edit. Maproom (talk) 12:53, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dgndenver: Welcome to the Teahouse. I'm not familiar with Philippine English orthography, but this part of the Philippine English article might help you:

Philippine English traditionally follows American English spelling and grammar while it shares some similarity to Commonwealth English. Philippine English follows the latter when it comes to punctuation as well as date notations. For example, a comma almost never precedes the final item in an enumeration (much like the AP Stylebook and other style guides in English-language journalism generally).

Granted, it's got a citation needed template at the end, so take it with a grain of salt. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 12:56, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some more info, albeit probably only slightly useful in this case, might be found at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Philippines-related articles. Lectonar (talk) 13:05, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Looking at Philippine English it seems to be a complex mix of "American English spelling and grammar while it shares some similarity to Commonwealth English".
My copy of MS Word has "English (Philippines)" as an option - if you have that, it might be worth copypasting some text and seeing what Word's "English (Philippines)" makes of it - it should give the articles some consistency provided other authors do the same. Philippine English is definitely a thing, unless the article about it is an elaborate hoax.
That being said, "copyediting" can including many things. If the article says something about the "kolour" of the flag, you can confidently correct to "colour". However, further "correction" of "colour" to "color" (or the other way around - I have no idea which is correct) should not be made unless you are sure that is the Philippine English usage.
Your ethnicity or skin color is irrelevant in that regard, what matters is your proficiency in the (specific dialect of the) language. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 13:06, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
