MG Motor India, often stylized as Morris Garages, is the Indian subsidiary of Chinese automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor Corporation Limited. The subsidiary was setup in the year 2017 and began its sales and manufacturing operations in 2019.[3] MG Motor India currently has a network of over 65 showrooms across 50 cities in the country.[4]

Models

MG Motor India currently sells the following vehicles in the Indian market:

  • MG Hector (2019–present) - a rebadged version of the Baojun 530.[5]
  • MG ZS EV (2020–present) - an electric SUV.[6]
  • MG Hector Plus (2020–present) - a 6-seater version of MG Hector.
  • MG Gloster (2020–present) - a body-on-frame SUV, rebadged version of the Maxus D90.

Manufacturing plant

MG Motor India has one manufacturing plant in the country, located in Halol, Gujarat. The plant has a capacity of 80,000 units per year and was previously owned by General Motors India Private Limited,[7] which halted its sales operations in India at the end of 2017 (the same year in which MG Motor India was established).

MG Motor India has invested more than ₹2000 crore in revamping the 178 acre facility post its takeover from General Motors.[7]

Advertising

In March 2019, MG Motor India appointed Benedict Cumberbatch as the brand ambassador of the company.[8] The company made its Indian adverting debut with its advertisement for the MG Hector SUV, which carried the tagline, "India's first internet SUV".
