The Copyright Cleanup Barnstar
For addressing the void left at Valle Crucis Abbey. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:16, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if you noticed that a pre-existing article had been deleted or just coincidentally created an article in that space, but either way, I appreciate it. I hate to see notable content lost due to copyright violations. I used to have more time to rewrite them myself, but these days mopping up after them is a full time job. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:16, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glamorgan

[edit]

Hi FruitMonkey, Happy New Year to you too. I agree that 1750 should be a cut off - most sources seem to date the real industrial 'take off' in Wales / Britain as a whole to the late 18th c. I'm not so sure about 1914 though - the number of coalminers in Wales peaked in 1920, Rhondda's population peaked in 1924; the Post-World War I recession seems to me to be more significant in marking a shift from an era of demographic and economic expansion in Glamorgan to one of contraction. I don't know exactly what date we should choose though: 1920? 1925? Lots more work needed on the article, but it's coming along nicely and I think we have enough sources to get it to GA status eventually.--Pondle (talk) 10:33, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a comprehensive list to me, but we might want to add urban trams, buses and trolleybuses. There are good little articles on buses and trams in the Encyclopedia of Wales.--Pondle (talk) 23:33, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I take your point, maybe picking out Rhondda was a bad example - although I was just quoting p.241 in D. Gareth Evans' book, where he writes the changing patterns of migration into the industrial areas... led to a decline in the numbers who could speak Welsh (he goes on to use Rhondda, Aberdare and Ebbw Vale as examples). I also had a look at Davies et al, p.938; the article on the Welsh language does attribute part of the fall in the proportion of people who could speak Welsh to the arrival of English-speaking immigrants in industrial areas, although obviously there are lots of other factors mentioned - education reforms, the prestige of English as the language of business and empire, etc. I do think we need to discuss the decline of the Welsh language, and the various other social trends of the period, somewhere in that section.--Pondle (talk) 00:04, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I understood that socialist/marxist/internationalist organisations, such as the Plebs' League, were directly responsible for Welsh being abandoned in the Rhondda (I'll have to find some refs, though). Daicaregos (talk) 08:48, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting theory, I don't remember 'The Miners' Next step' being translated into Welsh, so you may be onto something there. FruitMonkey (talk) 17:00, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for creating the above article. I had been meaning to do so myself, and will now merely have to improve on what you have done, with more detail on tinplate etc. Peterkingiron (talk) 22:30, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your solution to the dab problem is an excellent one, which I might well have adopted myself. Peterkingiron (talk) 22:47, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Early history of the Glamorgan area

Map of Glamorgan

[edit]

I've asked XrysD - who seems to be one of the best map creators on Wikipedia - to see if he can create a really top-quality map of Glamorgan (for an example of XrysD's previous Welsh work, see this file[1]). I was thinking that a modified version of the Glamorgan inset in that map would be great in the 'Administration' section of the article, but if you have any other ideas that XrysD could work on, please let him know.--Pondle (talk) 18:26, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Milford Haven

[edit]

Hi FruitMonkey, I have now finished going through and verifying all the references again. It took a whole day so please don't think I'm doing this just to be awkward. I know that you would rather make any major changes yourself so I have listed what needs to be done here: Talk:Milford Haven/GA1. It's worth bearing in mind that while a GA rating is hard to get, a single stroke from the mouse of any picky visitor to Wikipedia can demote it - requiring the article to go through the whole process again.--Kudpung (talk) 09:01, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've been busy addressing the suggestions I made. Overall I think the article is looking quite good now. There are some aspects of the prose I'm not personally happy with, but being a writer by trade I'm probably more critical than most, but as you say, time is not now on our side. SilkTork did a good job of sorting the History section out and I guess it's sit back and wait for his final verdict. If he forgets to have a look this weekend, there's no harm in giving him a nudge.--Kudpung (talk) 07:37, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi FruitMonkey, I posted a comment on the GA review pages.[2] Basically, Milford Haven can either be defined as a local government community or as an ONS-defined urban area. If you follow the links, you'll find a couple of useful maps. Give me a shout if you have trouble finding your way through NOMIS. BTW, I will have to get back into the Glamorgan article sometime soon. I've been slacking lately - too much stuff going on in the real world.--Pondle (talk) 23:23, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Check out Civil parishes in England - it may well fall within the Wikipedia definition. If that doesn't work, see how Malvern, Worcestershire is described.--Kudpung (talk) 04:50, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's been over a week now since any work was done on this article towards it's GA award. I've done all I can for it and am now withdrawing from the project. Theoretically there is a time limit for getting articles up to snuff once an official review has begun.--Kudpung (talk) 02:55, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Milford Haven

[edit]

The article appears to have ground to a halt from those attempting to ready the page for GA status. Not so much from the fact that people have given up, just that no one appears to have anything major to add anymore. Call for consensus/conclusion to current Ireland rugby union team icon

[edit]

Hello, I am contacting you because you have been an active participant in the recent discussion on icon to be used for Ireland rugby union. I have tried to summarise the many strands and come to a conclusion based on what I perceive the consensus to be in this section - Summary of Ireland Flag discussion and suggested consensus conclusion. To move the issue to a conclusion I am asking all participants who have signed the discussion to read my summary and comment on the validity of the approach I have advocated, before the issue goes cold. I am keen that the enormous efforts of all contributors results in a tangible conclusion on this occasion.Kwib (talk) 16:42, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rugby player articles

[edit]

Thanks for the response. I have been most impressed by the contribution to rugby history you have made. As with most subjects, recentism (I believe that is the wiki term) is prominent in rugby and work such as yours is helping to redress the balance. I, too, have a leaning towards the historical in terms of where I would tend to focus my efforts. As well as articles, I have attempted to drop in the odd template that is both informative but with a sub-agenda to prompt readers to fill in gaps (hence templates such as Template:English national rugby union team captains, Template:England Squad 1987 World Cup, Template:British and Irish Lions 1910, Template:Rugby Football Union Founding Clubs (and the same for Wales, Ireland and Scotland)) etc). The founding clubs of the RFU led me to fill in all the gaps myself...oh the irony. By the way, you may remembe that I created List of England national rugby union footballers. When I did so, I took elements from other like lists. It is more detailed than Ireland but less than Wales. Is there an accepted standard?Kwib (talk) 13:53, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SRU presidents

[edit]

I was thinking of putting up a list of SRU presidents at some point in the near future. I've really been working through the players just now, and there is a considerable overlap between the two. The one thing that makes me a bit apprehensive is that there's more or less one a year! (It's bad enough creating content for obscure players!)

One of the books with a list of SRU presidents in it, if I remember rightly, is Thorburn's "History of Scottish Rugby" (a very dry, and dully written book!) and the local library has a copy I've taken out in the past.--MacRusgail (talk) 14:31, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Transfer speculation

[edit]

This is the same guy basically edit warring the same type of content into two article where it is disputed, it is totally tiresome, its good to know I am not on my own resisting such tripe, thanks for commenting. Off2riorob (talk) 23:19, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This editor is not making any sense and is not listening at all, he put it back again and left me some warning template on my takpage, if hoe doesn't listen soon he needs reporting. Off2riorob (talk) 12:53, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have put the rubbish back, I can well do without a edit war report for such rubbish, totally tiresome, it is clearly an ass of an insertion and yet if an editor has a citation and keeps adding it and refuses to listen to even RFC opinions what can be done about it? If a couple of more people comment against him then it is clear, two editors have already posted against him.. this sort of waste of time is one of the worst things about wikipedia. I see he is edit warring the same content into the Gavin article, lets make a report about him. Off2riorob (talk) 13:13, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job. Sorry I jumped the gun and started editing before you were done. Can you do anything about Clara's article and Sidney's? They totally ignore the subjects' stage work, only describing their film work. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:07, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

A while back you sent me a message about the Year/Club/Caps/points headings in this infobox potentially showing up when they weren't required. just to make sure I can fix this properly, could you add some example infoboxes to the test cases page for me to test on? I'm having difficulty getting a good set of test pages. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:49, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a start to this. How's that for now? I can make the headers conditional so that only one shows up even if the player has several of international / state / club stats if you want. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 08:52, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wales national rugby league team players

[edit]

Hi FruitMonkey, armed with "The British Rugby League Records Book", I'm planning to tackle the redlinks on the List of Wales national rugby league team players article in the coming weeks. There'll undoubtedly be some former Rugby Union footballers who went North, so I'd appreciate any information that you have on these players. Also, there are some footballers for who only the initial of the forename is specified, but I've added the club and year(s) that they won caps, so if you have any idea of the forenames, once again I'd be grateful. There are also a couple of Ebbw Vale footballers from 1911; ?. Hitchins, and ?. Smith, for who even the initial of the forename is unknown, so once again I'd be grateful of any information. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 22:27, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've found that while at Wigan, Jerry Shea won two caps for Wales RL. I've tried to amend the infobox of his article, but being unfamiliar with the RU infobox, I'm not sure how to add information to an additional country, so your help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:58, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've found that that an Eddie Watkins won 3-caps while at Wigan during 1941…1945. These dates being during WWII, and the RFU having a more relaxed attitude to Rugby League during this period, with inter-code games taking place, I wondered whether Eddie Watkins could actually be Eddie Watkins? DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:29, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here’s one for your Wales RL Book... there’s a Dai Bevan who won a cap on the wing for Great Britain in December 1952 while at Halifax, there’s a Dai Bevan who won caps on the wing for Wales in September & December 1953 while at Wigan, and there’s a Dai Bevan who played on the wing in the 1954 Challenge Cup Final and replay at Halifax. According to wigan.rlfans.com, Dai Bevan was only at Wigan from 2nd April 1952 until about 28th September 1953, which would have given him ample opportunity to join Halifax in time for the 1954 Challenge Cup Final, but if he was at Wigan from April 1952, he couldn’t have played for Great Britain while at Halifax during December 1952. I suspect that they are all the same player, and that one of the references is incorrect. What does your Wales RL book have to say on the matter? :o) DynamoDegsy (talk) 20:50, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well spotted, I've redirected my Dai Bevan article to the older Dai Royston Bevan article, and amended the original article somewhat. I've also made reference to Dai Bevan playing for Oldham, could you please reference it up with your Wales RL book. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 18:19, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's a couple of players with unusual forenames, i.e. Ponty Davies, and Tuss Griffiths, would you know whether they are likely to be nicknames, or contractions of more formal forenames? Also, Robert Ackerman appears to have won cap(s) for Wales RL while at Cardiff in the early 1990s, but as far as I'm aware there wasn't an RL club in Cardiff at the time, and although there appears to be a couple of players who have won RL caps while at an RU club, i.e. Thomas "Tom" Brown while at Coventry R.F.C., and Lenny Woodard while at Pontypridd RFC, I believe the early '90s would've been too early for this to happen, as I believe it pre-dates professional RU, any ideas? Also, according to the "The British Rugby League Records Book" there's a player called Alex Kersey to Brown, "Kersey to Brown" what kind of surname is that?!?!?, any ideas? DynamoDegsy (talk) 07:57, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some sources state that; Billy Boston, Johnny Freeman, and Terry Holmes, have played for Wales RL. However, as they give no details of years, opposition, and number of caps, I'm doubful of the validity of these claims, but does your your Wales RL book have any details? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk)

David Williams Club? 1995 2-caps is not Dave Williams (rugby league) as he was born in London in 1987, and it's not David Williams (rugby league) as he was born in Sydney in 1986. Any ideas who the 1995 David Williams might be? DynamoDegsy (talk) 08:55, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll update Billy Boston's article to reflect non-full internationals shortly. Are there any other Welsh players who played for Wales, but only in non-full internationals? Another question, a technical one this time, when I respond on my talk page to your answer on my talk page, do you automatically get a new messages prompt? DynamoDegsy (talk)

After a brief sojourn creating articles for Rugby Union Internationals at what became Rugby League clubs, I'm back on message. I believe that you said there were five non-recognised Welsh internationals; 17 April 1927 versus Northern RL, 19 May 1951 versus British Empire XIII, and 19 May 1955 versus France 'B', do you have details of the non-full international players in the other two Welsh matches? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 16:43, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Conwyl Elfed

[edit]

Hi there, FM—a wee favour please, if you can manage. I'm copy-editing Teifi Valley Railway and have hit the unlinked placename 'Conwyl Efed'. Searching around, I come across Cynwyl Elfed which also features on the template 'Communities of Carmarthenshire':

Can you advise whether 'Conwyl' is a variant spelling of the same place? If not, there's scope for a new article on it, and also on Henllan, Ceredigion since they're both on a tourist route. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 07:03, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, thanks for the pics. Zooming in on the first one, I see at right a sign which looks very much like "CONWIL" (with the last letter obscured). I guess the (English) railway administrators would have provided anglicised names. These were either displayed as alternatives or were later replaced by Welsh ones (as in your second pic taken at the same location). In any event, there can't possibly be TWO places both with railway stations, so I'll treat the problem as solved! Diolch, boy bach! Bjenks (talk) 14:02, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
More evidence--check out CONWIL ELFED at Genuki. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 15:13, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

England v Wales

[edit]

Haven't been doing much editing lately, but have been reading a good book, which you might have already come across - called The Red & The White, by Huw Richards, a history of the England-Wales (or Wales-England if you prefer!), matches - lots of interesting stuff from the early days which I guess you probably already know, but worth a read anyway.--Bcp67 (talk) 06:50, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi I have a photo of Cardigan I'd like to upload to insert into the WP article on Cardigan -- can you advise me how to go about this? Best wishes, Jprw (talk) 12:45, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the sound and painstaking advice. However, I jump through various hoops and then a message appears "license also required" -- this is a major stumbling block, it would appear. Jprw (talk) 10:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, I fell at the last hurdle, as it were. I'll give it another go now though and then get back to you. Jprw (talk) 10:16, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is the message: "You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license." Jprw (talk) 10:20, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, it hasn't been uploaded -- because of the stumbling block mentioned above. I went down this route. Jprw (talk) 11:03, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, many thanks for bearing with me. The photo can be found here. I suppose the next step would be to decide if we can use it in the article, i.e., is it good enough. Cheers Jprw (talk) 11:57, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll leave it up to you as to how best to use the image -- though it may need to be cropped in the foreground? Anyway, glad you like it. Cheers, Jprw (talk) 05:33, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, you're watching. Now give me time to finish and then you can weigh in. But, in the interim, reflect on whether a dry recitation of facts, as opposed to facts enlived by informed opinion, makes for a more informative and valuable article. And don't take it personally. I've learn't not to.

OK. Point taken and I shall amend accordingly when I can return to the article from dealing with a blizzard of comments on it. But we both want the same thing, a good article on an amazing and important building. can we try and help each other? Sorry that's a question.

Wales flag

[edit]

Thanks for your contribution to the Flag of Wales article. I've put a bit of effort into it recently, but I'm still not too happy with my edits. The problem I find is seperating the flag from the Red Dragon, do you think the articles should be merged? FruitMonkey (talk) 17:29, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article's coverage is much, much better thanks to your edits! My feeling is that yes, the articles on the flag and the red dragon should be merged as they are really the same subject, and the overlap between the two articles shows how hard it is to separate the two.
In terms of future development, I'd like to include more on the period when the dragon was in the English royal arms and find a photo of a carved coat of arms with the supporters from a Tudor-era building. I assume they were replaced by a Scottish unicorn after the accession of James I but references would be necessary before we can add anything. Ham 17:47, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. There is a big space missing between the Tudors and the 1950s, I've been looking for a picture showing the Tudor livery. I also wonder if there are legal aspects to raising the flag, the Stars and Stripes has hundreds. I actually look at the US flag page with dismay, its great; but if we link the Red Dragon and the flag, it opens the floodgates to start showing the absorption of the flag into every day Welsh life. I'll put a note on the Welsh WikiProject to see how it goes down with others. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:28, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This appears to be the standard Henry VII had blessed at Saint Paul's; perhaps we could get the WP Image Lab to redraw it later on. The best I can find Tudor arms-wise at the moment is this, where the dragon is gold, but maybe the Heraldry WikiProject could point us in the direction of some red ones – I'm sure I saw a bright tomato-red one in a documentary on somewhere in England once. (It looks as if Carl Lofmark, A History of the Red Dragon (1995) is the main book to get on this subject – and 3 copies are going for 9p on Amazon!) I hope the flag hasn't got copyright restrictions, but I see the 1953 royal badge and the WAG logo, which I was hoping to use, are under copyright. Agreed on the floodgates point; I've been agonising over whether Idris the Dragon and Ness's tattoo in Gavin and Stacey are worthy of inclusion... ;) Ham 20:47, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think your gut reaction is correct, if there's no evidence of him being dual-code, or going north, and if he became prominent in Welsh rugby administration, I agree that's pretty compelling evidence that they're not the same chap. I'm going to systematically cross-reference the players in the List of Wales national rugby league team players article to the WRU and Scrum websites, so far I've checked players with articles in the left-hand column. There are a number of players on the page that only have a fore-initial, would you be able to supply some forenames? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 07:58, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Roy Lambert

[edit]

Similar to W.J. Jones (Llanelli) who played in the Wales versus British Empire XIII game at Llanelli 19th May 1951, when there doesn't apppear to have been an RL team in Llanelli Circa-1951, there's a Roy Lambert Neath, Dewsbury, and Warrington 1950…1952 7-caps, when there doesn't apppear to be an RL team in Neath Circa-1950…1952, and a Mel Ford Aberavon 1951 1-cap, when there doesn't apppear to be an RL team in Aberavon Circa-1951. Once again, if they had been RU players, I would have thought the RU/RL antagonism would mean that playing RL would prevent them from ever playing RU again, which would explain why Roy Lambert went on to play for Dewsbury, but where did Mel Ford, and W.J. Jones go to? Do you have any details of Roy Lambert, Mel Ford, or W.J. Jones going north? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 15:13, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[This] may shed some light on the situation. There appears to have been a Rugby League league in Wales in the early 1950s, teams included Aberavon, Llanelli, Bridgend, Swansea, Cardiff, Neath, etc. FruitMonkey (talk) 18:29, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Bob Jones/Dicky Jones?

[edit]

According saints.org.uk, there was no Bob Jones playing for St.Helens circa-1948, but there was a Dicky Jones who had signed for St. Helens from Swinton, and "my" Bob Jones had played for Swinton, so I think it's the same man. According to saints.org.uk, Dicky played for Aberavon, Glamorgan County, and Wales XV ("my" Bob Jones played for Wales RL in 1947), this seems to infer a 'Victory International' rather than test match, and I can't find a Bob/Dicky Jones on WRU, however the only non-Test playing Jones' in the Welsh stars still had a rugby ball in wartime article are; WG (Bill) Jones, Elvet Jones, Glyn Jones?, and Hubert Jones. Do you think Bob/Dicky are the same man? Do you have any information? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 22:16, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Players for Wales national rugby league team with unkown forename

[edit]

I've been chomping through the List of Wales national rugby league team players, and although I'm not there yet, I'm closing in on those players for whom I don't have a forename. Do you have any clues as to the forenames of… Aberdare = W. Hopkins; Batley = H. R. Davies; Treherbert = D. Galloway; Pontypridd = T. Davies; Merthyr Tydfil = D. Lewis, J. Paddison, and R. Rees; Hull Kingston Rovers = A. Sandham; Ebbw Vale = ?. Hitchins, W. E. 'Chick' Jenkins, J. Saunders, H. Smith; Keighley = W. Jones, and L. Orchard; Bradford Northern = H. Francis; Leeds = R. Green; Warrington = W. G. Chapman, and W. Dowell; Huddersfield = D. Evans, E. Hughes, and G. Parker? At least Ebbw Vale's W. E. 'Chick' Jenkins' nickname is known, but a proper forename would be better. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 14:46, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've got hold of copies of 'Gone North Vol.1', and 'Vol.2', and I've been checking the 'Welsh Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional' Appendix VII, to see if I could find any dual-code internationals, I've found that some players that I'd created as solely rugby league internationals, are in fact dual-code, but I've yet to update their articles. Anyhow, I thought I might as well create articles for all the remaining 'Welsh Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional', I've tried to match all players to existing articles, but to prevent me creating inadvertent duplicates, would you please be able to check the remaining redlinks on my talkpage? According to 'Gone North - Volume 2', the 'Errata to (Gone North) Volume 1' states... "MOORE William J. joined Rochdale H., not Oldham." At the moment the article mentions neither Rochdale Hornets, or Oldham, but Bradford, would you know whether this is a typo, or did he in fact play for Bradford Northern? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 20:22, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've added this note to Jere Blake, and William Morris' articles... In 'Gone North - Volume 2', the 'Errata to (Gone North) Volume 1' section states that "Detailed research now indicates that Jere Blake and William Morris appear never to have signed for Salford or any other professional club although they do appear to have trialled Northern Union clubs"., but just in case there are other references that mention Salford, I've not removed the references to them, but you might want to remove them if 'Gone North - Volume 1' is the only reference. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 16:11, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for editing. From where I'm from in Wales we still refer to them as the Llanelli Scarlets which technically they are along with the Cardiff Blues and Newport Gwent Dragons. However I am going to tweak further the Ifan Evans page as he has yet to represent the Scarlets. From what I am aware with him I don't think he has even yet to appear on the bench for them. Welshman25 (talk) 22:37, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hugh Lloyd-Davies seems an "interesting" character. The Welsh stars still had a rugby ball in wartime reference states that "The 13-a-side game had also seen the defection of Hugh Lloyd-Davies...", the On This Day - 5 January 1946 external link confirms Hugh Lloyd-Davies kicking a penalty for Wales XV against New Zealand Armed Forces, and the This Day - 29 November 1947 external link has Hugh Lloyd-Davies kicking two penalties for Cambridge University RFC against Oxford University RFC. I assumed that those players who had 'Gone North' had been given temporary dispensation to play RU for the Wales XV, but returned to RL after the "Victory Internationals", but Lloyd-Davies appear to have played RU for the Wales XV while at Barrow RL, and then gone onto play RU with Cambridge University, is this plausible? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 18:56, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I reckon they're all the same guy, but I think that the 'Welsh stars still had a rugby ball in wartime' might be incorrect, if he is playing for Ammanford RFC, Wales XV, and Cambridge University, circa-1945…47, and he became the first Cambridge Blue to turn professional, it's likely he played for Wales XV while at Ammanford RFC/Cambridge University, and that he became a Barrow player after this time... before legging it to Paris with his £1000 signing on fee!!!. William Arnold Bowen/William 'Billy' E. Bowen

[edit]

William Arnold Bowen and William 'Billy' E. Bowen (who went on to play RL with Leeds), both played for Swansea RFC about 20-years apart, which could infer a father/son or similar relationship, is there any evidence to support this assertion? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:12, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I just spotted a coincidence and wondered if they might be related. I'm geting close to finishing of the articles of 'Welsh Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional', and having completed articles for those on the 'List of Wales national rugby league team players' (except those for who I only have a fore-initial), I wondered whether you knew of a list of 'Welsh Rugby Union Club Footballers Who Turned Professional'? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 22:40, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the David and Evan James articles, it says "In 1892, James and his brother supposedly turned out for professional rugby league team Broughton Rangers...", should this be 1895, or later, as this is when the NU breakaway took place, or were they actually illegally paid to play rugby union for Broughton Rangers? So the James' left Swansea RFC to play rugby (union) for Broughton Rangers, but while at Broughton the James' were paid, and were banned by the RFU (presumably Broughton Rangers were also banned, or severely reprimanded), stayed at Broughton and played rugby league as Broughton joined the Northern Union, but then were reinstated by the RFU on appeal, returned to play rugby union for Swansea, and Wales, before finally leaving for rugby league at Broughton Rangers? DynamoDegsy (talk) 21:21, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Me again... could you please check out William Herbert "Bert" Jones for me? 'Gone North' says he won caps while at Llanelli, but saints.org.uk says Neath. Also, he only played 14-matches for St. Helens, would you know whether he returned to Wales and/or RU? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 21:06, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I bet you're just sat there waiting for me to ask these questions!!! DynamoDegsy (talk) 21:14, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created an article for Danny Harris, I believe he won Wales caps while at Pontypridd RFC, and Cardiff RFC, and from 'Gone North' I assume the caps were won in that club sequence, but I'm not sure when he swapped clubs. Would you please be able check? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:26, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've nothing to link Harold James Jones, and Harold Jones as the same person, but they did play in a similar era, and if he left Wigan in 1933, and went to Keighley, he could have won caps for Wales (RL) in 1935…36 as he'd have only been 28…29. He was a Lock in his union days, a second-row in his Wigan days, so it's not implausible that he could have played Prop, or Hooker for Wales (RL) after this. I'd welcome any information you might have.

That's all the Welsh Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional done, so unless you have a list of Welsh rugby union club footballers who turned to rugby league, then I'm all finished… phew. DynamoDegsy (talk) 17:03, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

'Gone North' indicates (with an asterix) that David Morgan Jenkins won GB (RL) caps, but I believe it was actually David Rees Jenkins, do you concur?

I've thought of one group of Welsh rugby league footballers on which we might be able to co-operate, and that's those that played for the Other Nationalities rugby league team, e.g. David "Dai" Harris, and Eli Davies, do you have any details on these or any others players, or details of a publication that has information of the Other Nationalities players? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 15:05, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi FruitMonkey, just wondered if we could/should get back into the work on the Glamorgan article. We've both stalled over recent weeks and months, but it must be v. close to GA, surely?--Pondle (talk) 22:57, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Hmmm, next steps for Glamorgan - we definitely need something on 'buildings to note' between 1920 and 1974; maybe turn the 'places of interest' section into prose; after that, submit to a peer review and go for GA?--Pondle (talk) 18:59, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In terms of notable buildings from 1920-74, the Welsh Academy Encyclopedia mentions the Guildhall in Swansea, Sully Hospital, the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff - an era of modernist and functionalist styles. I think St. David's Shopping Centre was built in the early 80s and the old National Stadium was started in the late 60s but only finished in 1984. Sport would be an interesting topic to expand on, I have a copy of Fields of Praise, the official WRU history from 1980, which is VERY detailed. I know less about football and cricket, though obviously we have the encyclopedia to help and whatever sources we can find online. Ultimately we may have to split some of these long sections into separate articles but that would be no bad thing, even more GA candidates!--Pondle (talk) 21:45, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good work on architecture FruitMonkey. I've just noticed that our 20th c. history ends with the Depression! We'll have to look at that over the next few days.--Pondle (talk) 17:41, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cardiff I.A.C.

[edit]

Page 169 of Robert Gate's 'Gone North - Volume 1' mentions both Cardiff RFC, and Cardiff I.A.C., would you know who I.A.C. are? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 13:23, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Blair Swannell

[edit]

I hear you. It is my bad as I copy/paste the WPRU banner I sometimes have been negligent to change the default 'stub' class designation... Blair Swannell being one of a couple (I forget which other one I had ballsed up). One interesting source of information I stumbled across recently is the NLA newspaper archive, where it possible to bring up all the contemporary articles from their day. Blair Swannell has quite a few articles that can be mined for further data possibly. I am beginning to put search links on the talk pages for these stubs I am putting up - you will find a few on Blair Swannell's talk page. You might want to double check these to see if anything is missing from a well rounded GA article. SauliH (talk) 01:11, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to page-158 of 'Gone North - Volume 1', George Thomas, is called George (Ponty) Thomas, and played for Pontypool, which seems to contrdict other references. Any ideas? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 09:00, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I'm not sure what the 100th 'Anniversary of 1st Cup Win' page on the 'warringtonwolves.org' website used to say. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 15:51, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Similar to the above, according to page-159 of 'Gone North - Volume 1', Emlyn Jenkins played for Cardiff, which seems to contradict 'Fields of praise : the official history of the Welsh Rugby Union, 1881-1981, David "Dai" Smith, Gareth Williams (1980) ISBN 0708307663'. Any ideas? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 15:51, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Leeds Rhinos Website, Glyn Prosser is the brother of Dai Prosser, and circa-1936, both of them played for York (RL). Do you have any details of Glyn and Dai being siblings, and of Glyn "Going North"?. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 20:11, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Dai and Glyn were brothers, though I have Glyn moving to Huddersfield RLFC in late 1935. FruitMonkey (talk) 22:58, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I guess Glyn may have played the 1935/36 season at Huddersfield, and then moved on to York for the 1936/37 season. Do you know if Dai went directly to York, or did he go via Huddersfield? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 08:00, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Dai joined York first, making his debut on 15 September 1934. No info yet on the guys who played for Monmouthshire before switching to League. It does look like them though. FruitMonkey (talk) 17:28, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Once again, according to page-159 of 'Gone North - Volume 1', Dai Prosser played for Neath. Your thoughts? DynamoDegsy (talk) 16:34, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to page-159 of 'Gone North - Volume 1', Arthur Daniels not only came from Llanelli, but he played for Llanelli, is this true? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 13:02, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's no getting rid of me... according to page-159 of 'Gone North - Volume 1', Glyn Moses played for Maesteg? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 13:40, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, have you got any references to the extra info you added to the above article e.g. his clubs and rugby league career. Eldumpo (talk) 20:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hasty edit?

[edit]

In your edit summary here, you said you undid my previous edit because "James Marsh is the disambiguation page." Well, yes, it is, but that's not the point. WP:INTDABLINK specifically says that when you want an intentional link to a disambiguation page, you should link to the page that has "(disambiguation)" in the title, even if that is a redirect. So the reason for the edit is not that the old link was wrong, but that it didn't meet the criteria for an intentional disambig link. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 21:17, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gibbonsdown

[edit]

Removing the history section of Gibbonsdown gave the article a strong POV slant. Which is why I reverted your reversion.

David Galloway

[edit]

I have found out that Galloway's (Treherbert RLFC) first name was David, and then I came across this (lot 120). Do you have any info as to which club he joined, Hull or Halifax? Ta FruitMonkey (talk) 21:00, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Hull FC website has a 'Past Players' list that has a D Galloway 1910-11. I'll be offline for couple of weeks as I'm disappearing off to the sun from the weekend. Cheers.DynamoDegsy (talk) 21:35, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My last contribution before I jet off... I wonder if Bradford Northern's Howell Francis, is the same guy as Wigan's Howell de Francis? It's the correct era, and the correct position. Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:37, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Aber is my local club and I have a history book which they brought out to celebrate the club's 50th year. I'll help edit the page as much as possible. Any help would be much appreciated.Welshman25 (talk) 18:48, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

[edit]

Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. My name's Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot from the Catalan Wikipedia and Occitan Wikiccionari) I've just read your profile and since you're Welsh I suppose you know very well what are a minorized language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... (I'm glad your culture and nation can provide people like Hywel Williams!) I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to this moment because Catalan is not supported by a state even though our Association is working real hard. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT and/or sign the list of "Members and Supporters" that can be reached through the link inside the template. Thanks again/diolch for your attention, I wish you a wonderful, warm and sunny summer, take care! Capsot (talk) 11:49, 7 August 2010 (UTC) PD: You're absolutely right about local history and villages, they deserve much more and have lived longer than some shows![reply]

Diolch again, if you ever need something about Catalan or Occitan, just let me know I'll be glad to help. I'll try to keep my userpage updated so all the (nice) people who supported us can know what's going on. Take real care, I wish you, your country and your language all the best! Thankyou. The written community is very different to a face-to-face one, in that it can be so easy to step over the line into brashness/or rudenes. Good to know that my attempts at controlling myself are showing as civility. Logical - well thanks for the compliment there too. SauliH (talk) 23:17, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The DYK project (nominate) 18:02, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

According to 'Gone North - Volume 1', a Welsh rugby union international Rees Thomas left Pontypool RFC for Warrington, would you know if this is Rees Thomas? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 13:08, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas left Pontypool for Warrington RLFC making his debut against Wigan on 5 October 1912. Maybe the book mistook Pontypridd for Pontypool. FruitMonkey (talk) 07:02, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
According to the WRU and Scrum websites, Rees Thomas' last game for Wales was 18 January 1913, there's only one Welsh RU intenational called Rees Thomas, but presumeably the Rees Thomas who played for Warrington on 5 October 1912 can't be the same Wales and Pontypool player? So 'Gone North - Volume 1' is incorrect? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:04, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The International caps section of Glynneath RFC has a red-linked T.C. Lloyd, do you think this could actually be Thomas John Lloyd? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:11, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Strange as it is 'T C' Lloyd of Glynneath is Thomas John Lloyd. I don't know where the C came from, but it was part of his nickname. FruitMonkey (talk) 23:37, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So Thomas John Lloyd's nickname began with a 'C', but we're not sure what it was? Cheers. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:04, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
