'peice' not 'piece'

[edit]

Hi, I see you're correcting mispellings and changed 'peice' to 'piece' in the article on Hopscotch? I've reverted your edit as the word is part of a quote from a 17th c. manuscript - the writer actually spelled it that way. In the interests of accurate quoting, I've restored his spelling.RLamb (talk) 20:35, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tabletop. I appreciate it must be tiring work combing through the entries to correct spelling errors.RLamb (talk) 07:15, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bug report

[edit]

Hi there! The spelling changed here is, of course, right, but the word was a part of the misspelled file name. The map wouldn't show after the corrections. Just a heads up—this may be a common occurrence. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); May 10, 2012; 18:15 (UTC)

The Copyeditor's Barnstar
I award this Barnstar to User:Tabletop for catching an error that had existed for six months--since the day Western Illinois University-Quad Cities was first created--and that none of us who have edited the article had caught. Nothing is more embarrassing than a spelling error in an article about education, and on behalf of my fellow editors, I want to thank you for scraping the egg of our collective faces. Cheif to Chief

[edit]

Really? Thanks on Katherine More! Mugginsx (talk) 15:41, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Spell chieph=> chief (0)
Spell ckief => chief (1) number will reduce on corrections.
Spell cheif => chief (45) Not all are incorrect.
Spell chef => chief (15,171) different word. Hard to find misspellings.
Spell chief => chief (213,953) probably correct as this outnumbers the others. Tabletop (talk) 01:21, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"typo" corrections

[edit]

Just a reminder that correcting "typos" in file names is a bad idea, because then the image won't display unless and until the change is reverted or the file moved. As it's an obvious typo in the file name, I've moved the file on Commons, but that won't always be possible. Regards, BencherliteTalk 23:18, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I know that, but sometimes you do not notice it is a "File:" or "Image:". It would help if "File:", etc., where highlighted in a different colour, rather than being greay like everything else.

    • Mark with <!-- uncertain spelling --> but cannot be searched for at a later date.
    • Mark with difficult non-word which can be searched for later, enabling one to return at a later date and fix it.
      • (sicsic) ==> 36 has too many mismatches ; good that is reminds one of (sic)
      • (sicsicsic) ==> 01 has but one mismatch.

With regrets, I have reverted your recent change. Your new section that "Redistricting is called delimitation" is unremarkable; there are different words for many things in India, especially because they are often not English words. Consider adding a section explaining how delimitation works, cases where it fails to be accurate, and any deliberate reasons for this. Spike-from-NH (talk)

Different countries cause the readjustment of electoral boundaries different things, such as Redistribution, Redistricting and Redelimitation. There should be some kind of disambig page or REDIRECTs to navigate these alternatives. Tabletop (talk) 04:58, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fortescue railway

[edit]

With AGF ect - I cannot believe that after your time editing you would actually add stuff like that without a WP:RS - it doesnt take much, and as it is dot pointed and claiming things - it should be reverted if you are not going to add reliable sources/cites for something like that... anything to do with Fortescue is problematic if not sourced properly SatuSuro 11:47, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

similarly with Nullagine, Western Australia - please take the effort to utilise WP:RS SatuSuro 11:51, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edits of 17th July to the previous version. There are two reasons for this.

The first is that your edits breaking up longer paragraphs into shorter paragraphs orphaned text from its supporting citations. I have no objections to your edits if you wish to proceed, but please take the time to copy and paste the appropriate citations at the end of the new paragraphs.

The second is that you included the sentence "The rolling stock could accept 100 feet curve radii." without including a citation supporting it.

"Everard Calthrop" is classified a "Good Article" partly because it is fully sourced. Please assist in maintaining its status by sourcing any edits you wish to contribute. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.228.82.52 (talk) 06:52, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to workshops on editing Wikipedia

[edit]

Dear Tabletop,

We are a team of researchers at the University of Oxford and AU Sharjah, researching the experiences of editors of content about the Arab world on Wikipedia. We are interested in your experiences of editing Wikipedia and are organising two events that we think you would be an excellent contributor to.

First, we are hosting an online wiki focus group about contributing to Wikipedia in Arabic and to articles about the Middle East and North Africa. We are interested in what barriers you perceive to exist in Wikipedia, how articles can be made better and generally what can be done to expand and improve Arabic Wikipedia and Wikipedia articles about the Arab world. This discussion will take place on a MediaWiki hosted at our institution and be available in English and Arabic. We will allow users to create their own discussion pages in addition to our discussions.

Second, we are hosting face-to-face workshops in Cairo from 21st-22nd October 2012. If you are interested in this we should be able to pay travel and accommodation costs for up to twenty participants. This workshop will cover similar themes to the online discussion but will allow participants to meet one another and benefit from being together.

We will take care of the organization and planning and all you have to do is show up and be ready to discuss. But if you would like to help shape some of the discussion themes in advance, please let us know. We have booked time in the workshops for Wikipedian-led discussions.

More details can be found by expanding our “Frequently Asked Questions” below.

We would be delighted to welcome you to either (or both) event. Please let us know (wikiproject@oii.ox.ac.uk) if you would like the opportunity to participate and we can send you more details.

Sincerely,

Mark, Bernie, Ilhem, Ali, Ahmed, and Heather

Hi,
It's been mentioned before but it's probably worth mentioning again; please take care when fixing typos, because not everything on your list of typos is guaranteed to be an error. If the typo is in the name of a file or source or template &c, "fixing" the typo actually breaks the link - the new name you've given it isn't the real name. bobrayner (talk) 23:03, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomenclature

[edit]
  • Nomenclature - one uses that term anymore - all Australian bodies use geographic names
  • Anecdotal stuff like the terms you have placed in there are as confusing as the previous article - 'Transcontinental' was a term used for the Adelaide to Perth line - unless you come up with a good WP:RS I see no help to an uninformed reader getting confused with a different railway line name which is not used
  • North south - again usage - if you find a good ref - great if not I dont think such material is of any practical use SatuSuro 12:26, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The lead sentence has the info - uncited repetition of the information down the article seems pointless SatuSuro 12:32, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Rawie

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Rawie requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Pburka (talk) 07:29, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fulfil → Fulfill

[edit]

Hi. Please don't change fulfil to fulfill, as you did in "Administrative law in Singapore" and "Presidential elections in Singapore", without checking if the articles use British or American spelling conventions. (For example, the former article was marked with {{Use British (Oxford) English}}.) The conventional spelling in British English is fulfil. Thanks. — SMUconlaw (talk) 10:48, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I second that. Please revert your changes to all articles that use British English. --Boson (talk) 12:36, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fulfill has 27,000 occurances.
Fulfil has 3,800 occurances.
Fullfull has 3 occurances.
Fullfil has 0 occurances.
This would suggest that Fulfill is more likely to be correct.
This is not an issue of one being correct and the other being wrong. They are both correct spellings used in different parts of the world: see "American and British English spelling differences" and "Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Spelling". Therefore, you should not change one to the other without checking if the article has been written in American or British English. (Note that fullfull and fullfil are clearly incorrect.) — SMUconlaw (talk) 06:49, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See also WP:RETAIN and {{uw-lang}}. --Boson (talk) 08:52, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of blessings in disguise has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced and unencyclopedic OR

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PamD 08:11, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The List of blessings in disguise crossreferences mostly other Wiki pages, which is a kind of referencing. This list and the disambig parent might of course be combines. Tabletop (talk) 05:45, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Armagh railway accident- "Trial" section

[edit]

You added this section in August 2011. It reports 6 railway employees to have been convicted, which seemed plausible, if unjust in the way suggested. However, the references given are Australian newspaper reports of the verdicts brought in by the coroner's jury at the inquest, which aren't guilty verdicts at a criminal trial. Inquests are/were fact-finding, and verdicts such as 'manslaughter' were (in the 19th century) findings by the jury of the charges which they believed should be brought against the persons named. The named persons would not have been convicted unless/until found guilty at a subsequent (adversarial; higher standard of proof required) criminal trial. (This would not automatically result; the Railway Inspectorate had a very low opinion (which was sometimes heeded)of the ability of coroner's juries to reach the right conclusions, thinking them too easily led (in the absence of RI guidance) to blame the workers who made the actual mistakes that killed people and to overlook deeper problems higher up the chain which put them in a position to make lethal mistakes.) (On the evidence reported by the Railway Inspectorate, even today there would seem to be little chance of a successful prosecution of company officers for anything other than breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act; whilst the accident could have been prevented by an automatic brake system it occurred because of multiple failures of junior employees to do their job properly)Rjccumbria (talk) 23:02, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm PamD. I noticed that you recently removed some content from User talk:PamD without explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, I restored the removed content. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Assuming good faith, please take more care when editing other users' talk pages to ensure that you do not accidentally delete comments. If this was not an accident, then please note that you should never remove other editors' comments from talk pages unless they fall within the categories of "harmful" or "prohibited" - see WP:TPO. In this edit you removed two paragraphs of my words from my talk page. You reply that "AFAIK, apart from adding two sections regarding List of Blessings in Disguise, all that I did extra was to change the capitalisation to List of blessings in disguise"
You could have checked the edit history of the page yourself by looking at the talk page history, where you can see the increase or decrease in page size caused by each edit. AGF: if you know so little about how Wikipedia works that you did not know this, please slow down and learn a little more before editing articles and talk pages; otherwise: please take the trouble to check what someone is complaining about before claiming only to have made minor edits. And in either case, please take care never to remove content from other people's talk pages except in the few circumstances where this is acceptable behaviour. Spellcheck filenames

[edit]

The following edit [1] made a "spelling correction" to to a File:name link, thus breaking the link. Such a correction would need making both on Commons and in the Wiki in order to work. Could you check/tweak your bot/ruleset in order to not making spelling corrections to File:name links? —Sladen (talk) 12:46, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tabletop, thank you for the replies. You can request the rename of a File itself by going to the file, (such as commons:File:TokyoMetro-N19-Akabane-iwabuchi-station-platfrom.jpg, and clicking move in the top-right of the screen (where the edit and history buttons are also). This will bring up a wizard, which you can scroll through to give the new name and a reason (eg. "correct spelling of "platform"). This will add a request box (you should be able to see the one I've just added), and there will be a delay while it is reviewed. —Sladen (talk) 13:05, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bolivar revisited

[edit]

Greetings! I've just noticed The Port Pirie broad gauge line on List of closed Adelaide railway stations. It asserts there were stations at Direk, Bolivar, Virginia, Two Wells. As the current Bolivar crossing loop is a stone's throw from Virginia, it makes me wonder where the old Bolivar station was. Do you have any thoughts, ideas or information? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 16:55, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

IIRC, one end of the Bolivar crossing loop was at the former level crossing at Taylors Road, which limited the length of the loop to 1200m. When this xing was replaced by an overbridge, the loop was able to be extended to the standard 1800m. Tabletop (talk) 21:17, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:Double Switching.jpg is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

ASG

[edit]

The ASG by size and clearances was bigger (in relation to the Swan View Tunnel), but the actual safety issues were played up by trade unions who wanted to make their mark on the political climate of the time, the other garratts had no known safety issues that were addressed at the ASG royal commission. The issues hardly relate to the tunnel at all inm the end. BTW dont forget to sign.... sats 00:17, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are currently 52 "breif"s that may or may not be mispellings. The only thing that one can do is to deal with these one at a time, and detemine which corrections are correct. Tabletop (talk) 01:56, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request to take part in a survey

[edit]

I am Piotr Konieczny, a fellow Wikipedian (User:Piotrus) and a researcher of Wikipedia (http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=gdV8_AEAAAAJ). I am currently (in collaboration with WMF) embarking on a project trying to understand why the most active Wikipedia contributors (such as yourself) may reduce their activity, or retire. We have a growing understanding of why an average editor may do so (see http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Former_Contributors_Survey_Results), but we have a very limited understanding of why the top editors would limit their contributions. Yet it is the top editors like yourself who contribute most of Wikiepdia's content, thus understanding this is of vital concern to Wikipedia's project future.

I am contacting you because you are among the top Wikipediana by number of edits, yet your editing activity shows a decline. I would very much appreciate if you would take a minute and answer the following four short questions. Please note this is not a mass email; I am contacting only few dozen of editors like yourself, and each response is extremely valuable. Your response will not be made public, and your privacy will be fully respected.

If you would like to help out in this project and take part in a very short survey, please send me a wikiemail, so that I can send you an email with the survey questions. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:26, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
