Asking For Your Opinion
LGA: continues to be quite difficult with respect to my contributions to the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus page. He continues to use serious editorial license with respect to content that I believe is important to the page. Specifically, he has removed all references to industry partnerships and the schools advisory board. Would it be possible for you to have a look at the rationale I have provided on the page and weigh in with your opinion? I am not asking you to agree with me. I am sincerely interested in what you have to say. I intend to ask other editors as well. Thank you. Stuartzs (talk)
- @Stuartzs: I agree there is currently an slow-burning content dispute on that page, however I do not wish to be engaged in the content dispute. The continuing revert cycle is not helping the encylopedia right now, and I have added some hopefully helpful remarks at Talk:University_of_Waterloo_Stratford_Campus#Page_Protection. — xaosflux Talk 01:03, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks Xaosflux. I did not mean to draw you into a dispute. I was simply looking for an unbiased opinion. My apologies if it placed you in an awkward position. Regards, Stuartzs (talk) 20:00, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Wikipedia talk:Requests for permissions
Hey there Xaosflux! I'm an often PER responder and I thought I'd stop in to discuss this chain of events with you. I'm not sure that the user was requesting permissions, those were just "empty" requests (I see them ALL the time). Usually in such cases where there are multiple empty requests from the same user, we consolidate them all into one request and then decline using {{subst:ESp|?}}, {{subst:ETp|?}}, or {{subst:EP|?}} template as appropriate based on the protection level of the page. That response says "Not done: It is unclear what you want..." I'm not complaining at or to you, and I'm happy that you didn't just remove the requests altogether as that would be bad faith and less acceptable (which is something I see that SuperMarioMan did with the first request and I intend to comment on their talk page about that as well). If you intend to frequently respond to requests, might I suggest trying out Jackmcbarn's EPH script? Anyways, I hope you have a great day! — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 11:49, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note @Technical 13:, those will be helpful, I don't normally patrol the talk on there but ended up back while going through protected edit requests in general; I did talk page that requester as well. Happy editing, — xaosflux Talk 15:26, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Larger than life.
I just wanted to let ya'll know that you missed one of Bill Murray's funny movies. It was one I watched a lot when I was younger. It's called larger than life. It came out in the 90's and It's about him being given a elephant from the will his father left for him, because his father was a clown. MFDs
Actually, you'll note that I was saying "deleted", not "delete"; I delete the page and then leave that statement as a rationale for why I did what I did. I don't entirely understand the MFD system of collapsing a concluded debate, so I didn't want to make a mess by doing the actual close in the wrong way. Nyttend (talk) 01:44, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Does that code succeed in collapsing the discussion on the MFD log? I'm not afraid to close AFDs (reluctant, since I find it hard, but I can do it), because they don't get collapsed on the log — I simply couldn't figure out how to do it. Nyttend (talk) 02:04, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, okay — that was the crucial thing. The discussion page itself wasn't collapsed, and I couldn't find the collapsing code on the log page, so I didn't know where it was or how to apply it. I'll thus be much more confident in closing them, if I can remember to check back for the code that you gave me. Nyttend (talk) 02:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

A couple of questions
Hello, Xaosflux -- I was wondering if you can answer a couple of questions for me. First, is there a good reason to have a userpage? I've been on Wikipedia for quite some time, and I've never had a userpage - just wondering if it would do good to have one. And second, I've been curious for a while, how does one become an administrator on Wikipedia? I've noticed how very few users in Wikipedia are administrators, and I am curious what one needs to qualify to be one, and whether there are a certain amount of available daily hours someone would need to put in to help with administrative duties. Thanks Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:44, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Johnsmith2116:, User pages are completely optional! Most regular editors make some sort of a user page as a way to let other community members know a little about them. Some people make very elaborate pages, some simple. I'd recommend that you make one, even if it just says Hello on it. Having a userpage will stop you from having a redlink in your signature. Many wikipedians include themselves in project categories (look at the bottom of my page) as a way to identify what they are working on and collaborate with others working on similar sub-projects; categorizing a userpage is the traditional way to do that. Not having a userpage may break certain personal sandbox testing that makes use of userpage-subpages. You can read all about userpages here: WP:USERPAGE. I suggest you create a userpage, even just containing one line (redirecting people to your talk page):
#REDIRECT [[User_talk:Johnsmith2116]]
- As for our janitorial corp (administrators), the method of becoming an administrator is to demonstrate a community consensus that you can be trusted with the technical and procedural tasks administrators perform at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. Another useful page about requesting administrator permissions are Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship. There are no service requirements for administrators, you can volunteer as often or as seldom as you have time. Most of tasks required to build the encyclopedia do not require administrator permissions.
- I notice you have recently requested and had multiple technical permissions added to your account. One way to demonstrate your need for more advanced permissions is to develop a pattern of using the tools you requested appropriately.
- Hope that answers your questions! — xaosflux Talk 18:55, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- Yes it does, thanks. A couple more questions - after having had a look at the administrator request page, I saw that users are nominated. Would I first need to be nominated by another user, or can I just go on there and nominate myself?
And also, I have a block on my record from last November (over a misunderstanding in which they thought I had done a malicious edit, but it was simply an accidental pre-mature edit, and they didn't believe me). Would having one block on my record from last November serve as a discouragement to them approving me? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:42, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

- While the procedure involves a nomination, you may nominate yourself. Past blocks are not a disqualification, but yes it would likely discourage people; especially as you state that the events leading to the block are still contested. I don't !vote at RfA much, but do read the pages; honestly I don't think you would gain consensus for administrator tools at this time-but you certainly can try if you really want to. My personal suggestions to you if you want to work on the administrative aspects of the encyclopedia would be to:
- Come to closure on the events of your block; either by accepting it, having the blocking administrator recant, or gaining consensus in the community via a discussion.
- (If accepting the block) - Wait a year from the block expiration
- Demonstrate your commitment and usefulness to the project by actively making productive use of all of the technical tools that you have recently requested. This should be consistent over multiple months.
- Be able to articulate how you want to improve the project via the technical tools of administration.
- Happy editing, — xaosflux Talk 16:53, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks again. On the block situation, that hasn't been an issue since it happened, it's never been brought up again -- the reason I mentioned it here is because I know it may show on my account, but it hasn't been brought up at any point since it happened; sorry if it came across that I was suggesting that it was unresolved
I was wondering, can any editor vote on the administrator application page? Or is it restricted to administrators only doing the voting? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:27, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

- Like most Wiki items, RfA isn't actually "voting", it is consensus gathering. Anyone is welcome to add Questions, Comments in Support or Opposition, or even Neutral Comments. Editors with past blocks are likely to have a question about the block raised, and declining to answer questions will drive many opposition comments. By saying it is unresolved, I mean that you are apparently still in conflict as to the reasoning for the block -- either coming to acceptance, or establishing why it was an error, is something that should be completed prior to seeking adminship. There is an active RfA open for another editor right now, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/AlanM1, take a look at it to see the process in action. Feel free to add your support, opposition, etc if you have an opinion. Personally, I think if you were to self-nominate for RfA right now, you would not gain approval; but I could be wrong!. — xaosflux Talk 20:49, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi again, Xaosflux - I think I'm going to apply in a few months. But I'd like to be familiar with all the administrator tools before I apply. Is there a page in Wikipedia which describes all the tools? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:14, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- A good starting place would be the pages below. For detailed technical specifications you can read the software notes on the MediaWiki sites.
- Happy reading, — xaosflux Talk 17:24, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

How to edit variables in notification/ confirm email?
Hi, I've found
- MediaWiki:Confirmemail_body
- MediaWiki:Createaccount-text
- MediaWiki:Enotif_body
are templates for email body.
However, I've found some vars in these template, such as
$1, $2, $WATCHINGUSERNAME, $PAGESUMMARY $PAGEMINOREDIT
and so on
How can I edit these variables to further costumize the email body?
Thanks so much!
--Sunjizu (talk) 15:48, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- Those variables are passed from the process that calls that mailing function. By editing the system message we can change where and if the variables are included, but not that data that is passed to the variables. That would have to be changed in the application code via a software patch. I may be able to answer further if you can explain exactly what you want to accomplish (e.g. a before/after view). — xaosflux Talk 18:07, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
User rights
Hi. I had requested for rollback rights a couple of weeks back [1] which was politely declined by DeltaQuad at the time. Since I'm spending more and more time on the project these days I've decided to give Huggle, Stiki, Igloo and other tools a try, all of which requires rollback permission. How long do you think I have to wait before applying again at WP:PERM? NQ talk 18:01, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
- My suggestion would be to keep using Wikipedia:Twinkle for a bit, be active in recent changes patrol, and then reapply in a month. Be transparent, list your improvements, and list your prior discussion and how you addressed the concerns. — xaosflux Talk 18:20, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's a good start. Maybe I'll focus on some content work too. Appreciate the help. NQ talk 11:03, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Move Userrights
Done — xaosflux Talk 18:25, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi there.
I am User:Akifumii and I have created this new main account. I prefer from now on to use this account so may you please transfer userrights from Akifumii to Xermano? Thanks. Xermano (talk) 07:05, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- I approve this message. Xermano is my new main. AWB access would greatly be appreciated on Xermano as well A2 07:06, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Account linked log here
- @Akifumii:; @Xermano:. This can certainly be done, though there a few items that need to be clear. If your only intent is to have a new username, your old account could be renamed, alternately you need to show a clear link between the account, either by redirecting the old username and talk pages (preferred), or by using the legit sock banners. Having the accounts linked in the creation log like you already did was a good start too!. Which way do you want to do this? The policy related to this is WP:SOCK for reference. Also, do you plan to continue in the education program under your new account? — xaosflux Talk 13:24, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi there. I do not want Akifumii renamed. I could just put (redirect) links between the user and talk pages and that would be fine by me. Do I have to notify the attribution committee? Thanks. Xermano (talk) 16:40, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- No need to contact anyone else, I added the redirects and some tags for you, I suggest you leave them, but feel free modify if you see fit. Transparency is a very important principal of the project. — xaosflux Talk 17:13, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Do you still plan on being active in the education program? Your account will need to be re-associated with institutions/courses. Ping me on this before I move your EP-rights. — xaosflux Talk 16:59, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Xermano (talk) 18:18, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- The way you are doing it is fine, please note that the history of your old account will still exist and starting a new account will not stop any investigations/sanctions if you were involved in actions that were disruptive to Wikipedia (the same would be true even if your accounts were renamed or not linked); so long as that is not the case everything should be fine.
