UNGEGN romanizations for city and province names, etc.
I believe that UNGEGN romanizations should be included in the infoboxes for geography-related articles. This romanization system is widely use for geographical names for Cambodia. And Google Maps also uses this. I must stress that it's only widely accepted for geographical names. So I don't necessarily endorse adding it to other Cambodia-related articles. --Dara (talk) 01:00, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Cambodia in 1992
Hope that somebody from this wikiproject can help. For List of World Heritage in Danger, I would like to know what the political situation of Cambodia and the role of UN were in 1992 (December). Nothing lengthy, just a short phrase. I wrote "UN controlled" but am not at all sure whether that's true. bamse (talk) 11:57, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Being here in Sihanoukville at the end of ten days in Cambodia, I am inspired to help, but don't know if I'll have the time when I return, though I have added a couple of potential sources on the talk page for the FCC. WikiWomen's History Month
Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Cambodia will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Cambodia's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 21:34, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Khmer Photo Help
I was in Cambodia last year and have a lot of photos that may be of use. What are some credentials I need for publishing photos?AshleyMichelleThompson (talk) 19:02, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Ashley. You don't need any credentials to upload photos to Wikipedia, but photos generally need to be released under a free license or they get deleted. If you go to Help:Introduction to uploading images there's a tutorial that will walk you through the process. Most of the images we use on Wikipedia can be found at Wikimedia Commons, a repository for freely licensed files that can be used on all Wikimedia projects. Commons has a category for Cambodia that can give you an idea of what we already have. Gobōnobō + c 21:27, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Name change needed please
Dear friends, currently H.E. Sun Chanthol's page is misspelled as "Sun Chan Thol". I am a close friend of his and he has asked me to please have his name spelled correctly so that people can reference him correctly in wikipedia. I would be glad to verify personally this request if need be, but I cannot seem to pursuade one editor that this is not a transliteration for some reason because some media has misspelled his name in the past. Can someone kindly change his page title from "Sun Chan Thol" to the correct spelling "Sun Chanthol". He would be grateful for that courtesy on his behalf. Msny thanks. Popular pages tool update
As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).
Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.
If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 04:56, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Need help with moving/creation of article
hi everybody! The article on Sihanoukville has been created in 2005 or so - i presume without clear geographical definition - there used to be any sort of content in it, relating to both, the city and the province too....i went through the entire content around a month ago and did a general clean-up. The article is now explicitly subjected to the province, although content needs further sorting. I have by now relevant content to create the "city" article. Anyhow - I tried to move the existing article to: "Sihanoukville province" - didn't work. Creating an article "Sihanoukville province" or "Sihanoukville city" doesn't work either - because creator redirects to existing article.
Any suggestions? ...and thanks a lot for your attention!!! I am grateful for any reply! All the best!!!Wikirictor (talk) 21:36, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Romanization
I've been trying to tidy the article Romanization of Khmer, in spite of not being in any way knowledgeable about the subject. Any expert help would be appreciated. In particular, I'm wondering about the "Table" section, which includes two columns for "official" transcription systems, even though these are not mentioned in the text of the article (and references to purported "official" systems appear to have been removed from the article in the past). Is there such a thing as an official Romanization, and if so, does anyone have any sources for it? If not, those columns ought to be removed from the table, and then the table could probably be removed completely. W. P. Uzer (talk) 19:19, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- I thought not, so I removed the table. If recreated it ought to be done with the systems that are actually mentioned in the article. W. P. Uzer (talk) 18:48, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Province/City/Town articles starting to look like tourist guides again
The province/city/town articles need some cleaning up and re-organizing. Many of them only consist of a short introduction followed by an "Attractions" subheading that lists all the tourist hot spots and by which city a tourist may access the sites. This all makes the articles look more like tourist agency brochures than encyclopedia articles. For comparison, Berlin and Madrid, after extensive "History", "Demographics", etc. sections, have sections titled "Culture" and "Arts and Culture" which list cultural places of interest or events important to the city, not just tourist destinations.
Some examples: Battambang, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville (city) (in this one, why is there a list of beaches with hotels that serve them?).
I think many of the places listed under the "Attractions" subheadings could legitimately be included in the articles, but they are much more than just attractions for foreigners...in many cases they are centuries-old cultural monuments with significant importance and sources of pride with deep meaning to the Cambodian people. Considering them merely as "attractions" is insulting and at the very least, the title of those subheadings should be changed to something more appropriate. Additionally, IMHO, instead of the current list format, the sections should be written in coherent paragraphs explaining the significance (i.e. what makes it WP:notable and worth of inclusion in an encyclopedia article) of each site. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to devote to Wikipedia anymore, nor will I for the foreseeable future, but hopefully we can all work on this problem and get it take care of sooner rather than later.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 06:46, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi! I am the editor for Sihanoukville (city). Although by now the vast majority of its content is new, i adopted the general structure of the former Sihanoukville article, which had a "beaches" section. So i kept it. I think that these beaches are a very distinctive feature of the city and they have a rather great economic and cultural significance. I actually made sure, that business names are being avoided, apart from the Independence Hotel, which has a certain cultural, national and historical significance - and the Sokha 5-star resort - which the Cambodians seem to be so proud of. Maybe i remove the name of this one. Thanks for your helpful assessments!!!

Help with an article
I need some help with an article, Mrenh Gongveal. This article was created in tandem with one about a book discussing this topic, Mrenh Gongveal: Chasing the Elves of the Khmer. The problem here is that the article relies heavily on sources that the author used while researching his book, without anything to prove that these sources actually explicitly back up his claims. Some of them look like they're academic sources, but I can't verify if they explicitly mention this specific being. A search for the term itself in English brings up nothing other than hits for the book and a rudimentary search for the term given in Khmer, "ម្រេញគង្វាល", (using Google Translate) doesn't really bring up anything. This is likely because Google Translate tells me that the term is basically "elves" in Khmer so it's unlikely that it'd bring up anything useful. I tried searching using the variations of the spelling and only brought up more hits of stuff by the book's author ([1]).
I'm going to list this as a PROD, but I did want to give this one last fair shake by asking for help here. If you can provide sourcing then this article will likely need to be fairly heavily re-written in order to ensure that all of the original research is removed. I can't shake the feeling that this article was written with the express intent to promote the author's book. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 09:06, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- ម្រេញគង្វាល (better transliterated as Mrenh Kongveal) are beings or spirits in Cambodian folk religion. They are believed to exist wherever groups of animals congregate. From Headley (1977): "...a kind of ghost (or elf) which is believed to take care of wild animals in the forest. People often pray to them to protect farm animals....or a kind of fairy or elf which resembles a child and is believed to watch over animal herds." They are also mentioned in these reliable sources: here, here, and here just to name a quick few. It's bedtime for me now, but if nobody has gotten around to it by tomorrow, I will see what I can do with the article. It is a legitimate topic for an article, please consider removing the PROD and just tagging it with something appropriate (COI, sources, w/e) in the meantime.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 10:38, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
circle dance music
Hi WikiProject Cambodia,
In going through reviews of the American-published compilation album Cambodian Rocks, I keep coming across references to "circle dance music" to describe musical trends of the 60s-70s which fused with western psychedelic/garage rock/pop to create the incredible music on that album. I noticed circle dance music is a redlink, but figure it's likely because of the translation. Is this genre the same as romvong? Apologies for my ignorance. If the answer is no regarding romvong, is there another article in which the topic is covered? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 04:08, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yes. រាំវង់ (romvong) translates literally to "circle dance" and is the same as "circle dance music".--William Thweatt TalkContribs 04:36, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- @WilliamThweatt: Aha! Thanks. Do you know if it's appropriate to also talk about romvong as a style of music? The romvong article (which, granted, obviously needs work) doesn't really go into it. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 05:33, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Technically, romvong refers specifically to the dance but it is commonly used to refer to the music as well -- we do the same in English (e.g. "play us a waltz"). chumrieng romvong ("romvong song") or phleng romvong ("romvong music") could be used if it were necessary to disambiguate or emphasize that one is talking only about the music.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 09:42, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Notability: The Killing Phone
Can anyone help look at this article? I can't find any sources to support it meets WP:NFILM or WP:GNG, but it's really difficult when I don't know much about the topic area or language. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 08:19, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- The problem with establishing notability for Khmer films is that there is very little online. The modern Khmer film industry is in a sad state. There is little funding, little talent and even less originality. Modern Khmer films are usually low-budget remakes of foreign films or classic Khmer movies. There is no serious film critic industry or even review sections in newspapers as we have here in the West. Mention of a particular film only makes it into the media if it causes controversy (usually in the form of government condemnation), stars a famous popular singer, or if there is some marital scandal involving a popular star. Oftentimes even the most popular movies are only mentioned online on websites selling DVDs and Khmer blogs/forums. This particular film was fairly popular at the time and was ubiquitous in DVD/rental markets but I can find nothing online (even in Khmer) that would be usable to support either guideline.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 09:07, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
French Indochina
Hello,
I am trying to find a cambodian translation for the official name of French Indochina. It actually had two official names, Indochinese union (1887-1941) and Indochinese federation (1941-1954). Can anybody help me find the khmer translations for these two ? By the way, the article currently gives សហភាពឥណ្ឌូចិន as an equivalent for French Indochina (unofficial name) but google translates it as just Indochina. Is that correct ? Thank you. Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 07:47, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- The words you quote from the article mean "Indochinese Union" (សហភាព means "union", ឥណ្ឌូចិន means "Indochina"). សហព័ន្ឋឥណ្ឌូចិន is the Khmer for Indochinese Federation.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 08:41, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

- I actually came here to ask for this as well. Right now there's an argument that Amazon reviews and YouTube views should be a sign that the film would be notable and have coverage in its country of origin. I don't doubt that there is coverage, but right now we have no actual proof of that and we'd need at least a little something in order to really justify and solidify a keep, as that's the type of argument that can easily be argued against at DRV or in another AfD. It's most likely that there's coverage in Khmer. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 19:40, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Recently some interested people have been attempting to expand the generally thin article Music of Cambodia. I encourage the folks in this project to help expand that article. There is much to discuss and the article could become significant if experts chip in. See Music of India or Music of Thailand (among many others) for comparison. Thanks. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 21:00, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:28, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Academic paper about the WikiProject
Luyt, Brendan (2018-02-01). "Wikipedia's gaps in coverage: are Wikiprojects a solution? A study of the Cambodian Wikiproject". Online Information Review. 42 (2): 238–249. doi:10.1108/OIR-06-2017-0199. ISSN 1468-4527. Retrieved 2018-07-18.
From the abstract:
- "The purpose of this paper is to examine the rather unsuccessful Wikiproject for Cambodia. Despite its lack of success, it is a case that can be used to draw lessens for dealing with the issue of geographical under-representation on Wikipedia as a whole. .... The author takes a broadly qualitative approach to the study of Wikipedia. For this study, the Cambodia Wikiproject main page, as well as the various talk page archives associated with it, was downloaded in November 2016 and subjected to a content analysis. Descriptive statistics are also used when necessary to build the argument. Findings: Wikiproject Cambodia has failed to appreciably improve the coverage of Cambodian topics. This is likely due to its inability to attract for a prolonged period of time a champion able to anchor the project and provide a sense that someone is listening. But the makeup of the project members also suggests that even if a champion could be found, the question of who gets to represent whom remains difficult to deal with. It is unlikely that Cambodia will anytime soon develop a strong community of Wikipedia editors given the economic and social constraints the country imposes on the most of its population."
If someone would like to review or summarize this paper for the Wikimedia Research Newsletter (doubling as the Signpost's "Recent research" section), please feel free to sign up at https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WRN201807 . Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 16:33, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
