The article European mandatory age limits and related laws has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hugahoody (talk) 23:02, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

This map desperately needs an update. I can't find the uploader and can't really make sense of the grouping into categores. Something needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Either the map in question or the table here. --U5K0 (talk) 14:02, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Recent changes were made to citations templates (such as {{citation}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place |id={{arxiv|0123.4567}} (or worse |url=http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567), now you can simply use |arxiv=0123.4567, likewise for |id={{JSTOR|0123456789}} and |url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789|jstor=0123456789.

The full list of supported identifiers is given here (with dummy values):

  • {{cite journal |author=John Smith |year=2000 |title=How to Put Things into Other Things |journal=Journal of Foobar |volume=1 |issue=2 |pages=3–4 |arxiv=0123456789 |asin=0123456789 |bibcode=0123456789 |doi=0123456789 |jfm=0123456789 |jstor=0123456789 |lccn=0123456789 |isbn=0123456789 |issn=0123456789 |mr=0123456789 |oclc=0123456789 |ol=0123456789 |osti=0123456789 |rfc=0123456789 |pmc=0123456789 |pmid=0123456789 |ssrn=0123456789 |zbl=0123456789 |id={{para|id|____}} }}

Obviously not all citations needs all parameters, but this streamlines the most popular ones and gives both better metadata and better appearances when printed. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 02:47, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Europe articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Europe articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Rating articles

The lists of Top, High, Mid, etc importance articles is just plain ridiculous. Someone needs to rip through it and remove all the inflated gradings of the Space articles. Every Space development is rated as either a Top or High importance article.

The Top 100 popular music lists also need to be pushed down to the lower categories along with all the other competition lists.

Pan-European history, art and architecture articles need a place either in the Top or High section. Renaissance architecture, Romanesque architecture, and Gothic architecture were all pan-European.

Perth requested-move notification

A requested move survey was started at Talk:Perth_(disambiguation)#Requested_move, which proposes to move:

Background: There was a previous requested-move survey which ran from late May to mid June. There was a great deal of controversy surrounding the closure and subsequent events, which involved a number of reverts and re-reverts which are the subject of an ongoing arbitration case. There was a move review process, which was closed with a finding that the original requested-move closure was endorsed; however, the move review process is relatively new and untried. — P.T. Unifying introductory paragraphs on EU member state articles

I would like to propose that all articles pertaining to the 27 member states of the EU share a uniform introductory paragraph introducing all countries as, first and foremost, states of the European Union. Post Lisbon Treaty, the concept of fully independent and sovereign nation states in Europe is outdated when such major areas of public policy are now agreed upon at the European level, with much deeper integration due to arrive in the imminent future. The wikipedia definition of a sovereign state is as follows:

"A sovereign state is a political organization with a centralized government that has supreme independent authority over a geographic area. It has a permanent population, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states. It is also normally understood to be a state which is neither dependent on nor subject to any other power or state"

It is, therefore, not only misleading but inaccurate to introduce the various countries as 'sovereign' or 'independent' as if they are not dependent upon or subject to the powers of the EU, considering the fact that should their national parliaments fail to incorporate EU law they face prosecution by the European Court of Justice. Wikipedia would do well to reflect this fact in the introductory paragraphs, preferably within the first few sentences. This would of course merely involve minor corrections to the intro paragraphs of 27 countries. Please discuss... Richie wright1980 (talk) 11:04, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

We have List of sovereign states#Criteria for inclusion, which specifies that countries declare themselves as sovereign states and are recognised as such by others. That applies to the countries within the EU. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:38, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:05, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

There is a discussion going on right now at WP:Categories for discussion that involves changing the category names for all cultures, from, for example, "Afghan society" to "Society of Afghanistan". Leaflet for Wikiproject Europe at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Help with AIFMD?

Hi there, I'm hoping someone at WikiProject Europe might be interested in improving the article about an EU financial directive, the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive. There's a lot of information missing from the AIFMD article, and it generally lacks sources and could be made more clear, so I'm offering some suggestions to fix these issues.

As a quick disclosure: I'm working on behalf of the Managed Funds Association and due to that financial COI I won't make any direct edits to the article. Instead, I've proposed the updates on the Talk page here. If an editor active here is able to review and make the changes as they feel are appropriate, I'd be very grateful. Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 11:54, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

This project is for topics that are not primarily concerned with the EU, so the appropriate talk page is probably Wikipedia talk:WikiProject European Union. --Boson (talk) 17:23, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

Dividing Europe

The need to divide Europe into large trans-national parts arises in many contexts, leading to various ad-hoc terms. Since these terms exist, we have articles on them, but in most cases it's not clear what, precisely, the articles are supposed to be about. I have looked at the situation, and some of these articles are in a really bad state.

Some regions are relatively well defined and not (very) problematic:

  • Alpine states – Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Slovenia. Also Germany, France, Italy, Monaco.
  • Balkans – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia. Sometimes also included: Moldova, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey.
  • Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
  • Benelux – Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg.
  • British Isles – United Kingdom and Ireland.
  • Celtic nations – Ireland plus parts of UK and France.
  • Iberian Peninsula – Portugal and Spain.
  • Latin Europe – Essentially Portugal, Spain, France, Italy.
  • Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden. (Also Greenland.)
  • Scandinavia – Denmark, Norway, Sweden. (Article also says Finland is sometimes included.)
  • Slavic Europe – Countries with Slavic languages.
  • Romance-speaking Europe – Andorra, France, Italy, Moldova, Monaco, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Spain, Vatican.
  • Visegrád countries - the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia.

The reason why I started looking at this is the sad state of the following, which for some reason is on my watchlist:

  • Germanic Europe – Gives a sloppy OR definition related to "Germanic culture".

But as soon as you add a compass direction to "Europe", it gets incredibly messy:

  • Northern Europe – Uses an internal UN Cold War era definition (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, UK).
  • Western Europe – Uses the Cold War era political definition (Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece[!], Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Vatican) but also highlights the UN definition (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Switzerland).
  • Southern Europe – Simply lists the several definitions (Geographical, UN, climatical, phytogeographical, linguistic).
  • Eastern Europe – Explains that the term is extremely volatile, then lists various definitions (UN, CIA World Factbook, geographical, political/cultural), in most cases without saying in detail which countries they cover.
  • Central Europe – The article lists states that are normally included (Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland) and states that are sometimes included in part. It also lists the UN definition (as before + Croatia, Luxembourg, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).
    • Mitteleuropa – Apparently a content fork under the German name.
  • Northwest Europe – Gives a geographic and a linguistic definition. Also a Canadian/British definition from military history.
  • Southwest Europe – Redirects to Iberian Peninsula.
  • Northeast Europe – Redlink. (And I am not asking for this to change, at least not without discussion!)
  • Southeast Europe – Initially defines it as a recent term for the Balkans, but proceeds to give several different definitions.
  • Central and Eastern Europe – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bulgaria. Political term for ex-communist countries that are not CIS members.

Given the problems with the latter block of articles, I wonder if we can't simply merge them all (or almost all) into Regions of Europe. Any other ideas what to do with this mess? Hans Adler 23:47, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

List of sovereign states in Europe by GDP (PPP) per capita

The above article has been renamed from "List of countries in Europe by GDP (PPP) per capita" along with the others in the "group". However, none of the cross links have been changed from "country" to "sovereign state" which makes it a complete mess. Trouble is I am not certain if I should be putting a rename tag on the articles, or should be re-writing the links so the whole thing is correct. My opinion is with the former, but I thought I'd get a second or third opinion before I act. Any ideas? Cheers. --Richhoncho (talk) 11:44, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Antisemitism

Why does anti-semitism have its own entry on the Europe portal category tree when it should be under the already present racism category? Is antisemitism different from other forms of racism? Totally new to this, tried to fix it, got lost in the quagmire, gave up and decided to post here, most probably the wrong place..... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.139.17.60 (talk) 15:12, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

{{Europe topic|Symbols of}}

Since there are many articles sources that use the Template type {{Culture of England}}, in which it is linked "National symbol of", it's more that it is changing this single template, with a link to "National symbol of" and not "Symbol of" as it is now. Deletion of "Human trafficking in [..]"

There are several articles about Human trafficing in various European Countries, which are just a direct copy of some U.S. goverment report. All articles (I checked) mentioned these problem as unresolved since 2010. I therefore think a deletion of most of them is appropriate. Since I am no Wikipedia author I was unsure whether these articles are suitable for a speedy deletion, proposed deletion or regular one, I am just mentioning it here in the hope somebody more knowledgeable will know what to do.

THE UN about the Statistical division geoscheme

Seeing all the spats about European sub-divisions (Europe is quite small for dividing!), I have decided to contact the UN and as what they think abou the fact that their geoscheme is so extensively used on Wiki. This is what I received:

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for your email.

The geographical groupings used by the United Nations Statistics Division follow the M49 Standard for Area Codes for Statistical use, details of which can be found here: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/methods/m49/m49.htm

The designations employed and the presentation of material at this site do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. The assignment of countries or areas to specific groupings is for statistical convenience and does not imply any assumption regarding political or other affiliation of countries or territories by the United Nations.

"Regions" are so drawn as to obtain greater homogeneity in sizes of population, demographic circumstances and accuracy of demographic statistics (another example is Russia -- it is in the continent of Asia but it belongs in the Eastern Europe "region"). This nomenclature is widely used in international statistics but it is by no means universal.

I hope this is useful.

Best regards,

The UN Demographic Yearbook Team.

It seems Wikipedia abuses the geoscheme, while there is actually an openly proposed geoscheme by the Geographical sub-division: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/geoinfo/ungegn/docs/23-gegn/wp/gegn23wp48.pdf --131.251.133.25 (talk) 11:50, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Help resolve an edit war?

Hello! There is a slow-motion edit war going on at the article Largest cities in Europe. The issue is how to count the population of Istanbul: whether to count the population of the entire city, or only the population on the European side of the city. Any input at Talk:Largest cities in Europe to help resolve this edit war or develop consensus would be appreciated. Bragging rights are involved, since Istanbul is the largest city in Europe counting both the European and Asian sides, and the second-largest counting only the European side. (Note that this page uses the population within city limits, not the metropolitan area.) I have full-protected the article for 24 hours hoping this can be resolved without anyone getting blocked. Thanks! --MelanieN (talk) 19:00, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject Europe/Archive 5 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Project scope and organization

Hello everyone! I have a question about the scope and organization of WikiProject Europe, and I'm asking out of curiosity. While analyzing statistics for some of the WikiProjects, I noticed that the number of articles within the scope of WikiProject Europe and WikiProject Africa are very different. From what I can tell this is partly due to how they are organized, WikiProject Europe appears to only be concerned about articles that cover "pan-European/cross-border" topics, whereas WikiProject Africa appears to be an umbrella project covering articles about any African topic (while at the same time also tagging relevant country-specific WikiProjects where applicable). I'm not saying either of those is better than the other, I just found the difference in approaches interesting and wanted to reach out to see if this is something that has been discussed and what some of the reasons were behind choosing the approach WikiProject Europe has?

I've dug into the archives of this talk page, but didn't find much of use there, which is why I'm posting. Curious to learn more. Regards, Nettrom (talk) 23:47, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/Archive 5/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Europe.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Europe, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Culture of Europe

Several people have clearly worked hard on the Culture of Europe article, but it's not in a great state. Most sections consist of either long lists of persons relevant to the topic or links to other articles, with little sense of overarching theme or context. Efforts to improve the article are going to be difficult, as I doubt anyone is an competent in every topic covered, but at the very least it could be consistently formatted and efforts made to provide a basic overview. That should leave it in a better state for when experts do come along. Some kind of consensus on how detailed the article should be would also be beneficial. Any comment is appreciated. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:36, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

College towns/ University towns

I have been watching the article List of college towns for over a year, and I notice there seems to be no agreement over the meaning of a college town. It seems to be mostly applied to the United States, but this may be because only in the United States are the words "college" and "university" mostly synonymous. On the other hand, maybe a town "dominated by its student population" is a mostly American phenomenon, because from the little I know of the topic, most early European universities were built in major cities.

You can see that on Talk:List of college towns, many people have been pointing out inappropriate list items. For example, Paris was previously included, and it's certainly not dominated by university activities. Then we have Category:University towns and its subcategories. This needs to be better defined, particularly in regards to Europe. It's possible that "university town" has a different meaning in Europe than "college town" in the United States, although I'm not sure. Maybe it would be better to split the American/Canadian college towns into their own article. But the city of Cambridge does seem to meet American standards for a college town. It may be that the category(s) won't match the list article(s), but we need to make the meaning of both clearer.

Notifying members in the previous CfD discussion for the category, as well as creators of categories: @Dystopos, Bearcat, Dennis Bratland, Marcocapelle, Markvs88, Bduke, Peterkingiron, Thincat, Carlossuarez46, BrownHairedGirl, Jc37, Robby, and GilesMartin1945:Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 16:32, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

  • Some local knowledge here. In the Netherlands, Wageningen and Kampen have a very high percentage of students because they are only small towns. But these two towns in isolation are not specifically known as "college towns" or "university towns". The latter terms apply to just every town or city that has a university. That is also what the list is based on. I notice that Groningen, Leiden and Maastricht are in the Dutch category which basically means that the category has been randomly populated. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:57, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
The only nearby place that I know that is really defined by its university is Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium which was built with the purpose to accomodate the university. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:09, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
  • The usage is definitely problematic — I can only speak with any particular expertise to the Canada section of the list, but it includes entirely too many places that aren't "university/college towns" as that term is generally defined, but are merely "places that happen to have a university or college". My own hometown of Sudbury, for instance, is included in the list — but while it certainly has post-secondary institutions, those aren't its central raison d'être and can't be said to exert an outsize influence on the city's overall culture or economy. And although they aren't still there now, the talk page purports that the list previously included Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver, which again certainly have post-secondary institutions but aren't dominated by them to the extent needed to be defined as "university towns". I can't speak to Europe with the same expertise about what is or isn't a "university town", but I can confirm that at least in Canada, what OP describes is definitely happening, to such an extent that I've had to completely strip the Canadian section from that list pending the use of proper reliable sources to actually support inclusion. The Canadian category isn't as bad, but instead is populated by a much more limited selection of entries that I can mostly defend, but the sibling categories for other countries are definitely being used more problematically (e.g. the one for Germany is including Berlin, Bonn, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt, and the UK one includes London.) Bearcat (talk) 17:45, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
  • The article College town is in poor shape, with few references and little attempt to explain how the term has developed and how usage varies by country. Sure, the concept exists, but understandings of it are too variable and subjective to form the basis of a viable category (see WP:SUBJECTIVECAT). In Ireland, there are not many universities, but there is divergence between the List of college towns#Ireland and the Category:University towns in Ireland. On a narrow definition, the only "university towns" on the island of Ireland are Maynooth and possibly Coleraine, but the category even includes Dublin, which is not dominated by its universities.
So I am reasonably persuaded that the only solution is to delete the categories per WP:SUBJECTIVECAT. However, I suggest that the best path would be to start with an RFC, to ensure that there is time to hear all views. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:42, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

  • For whatever it's worth, to speak to my own knowledge regarding towns in Alabama, I'd remove all of the ones listed in the article except for Auburn and Tuskegee. Tuscaloosa and some others are certainly dominated (economically and demographically) by their universities, but they also have significant histories and economic activities not related their universities. The subheadings for "Arkadelphia" and "Southside" in Birmingham make no sense as they are not towns. --Dystopos (talk) 17:11, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Monegasque / Monégasque

There are some article titles with the spelling "Monégasque" (here) and some with the spelling "Monegasque" (without the diacritic) (here). All categories use the latter spelling (here). Both spellings are in general use, but the article on the Monégasque language consistently uses the diacritic. I would suggest to move the pages so as to consistenly use the diacritic, but I wanted to get your views first since this would be quite a large number of moves. Joriki (talk) 06:11, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

I support this proposal. We have the technology to easily use diacritics, so we should use it. Moves would create redirects from titles without diacritics, so there is no loss of functionality by doing this. Mjroots (talk) 06:21, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

There is a requested move discussion at Talk:List of cities by country that have stolpersteine#Requested move 19 August 2021 that may be of interest to members of this WikiProject.  — Shibbolethink ( ) 02:06, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

Question about Balkan portal

Hello, I am not really sure how to start this queestion on this talk page off as I am new here. But, I wanted to ask, would the prospect of a Balkans portal be possible sometime in the distant future? I noticed there was a request for it. If it would be alright to start, I would certainly be excited to help as much as I could. Lararuzic (talk) 00:02, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Ukraine

Think we should work on this article together Ukraine ...needs lots of care. As of now its full of unsourced info and full of excerpts that dont allow us to monitor changes to the article and has many subpart references we normally dont use in country articles. Best get as many eyes on this considering whats going on.--Moxy- 17:16, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Balkan Latinity WikiProject

Hello, I've been thinking for a while of an idea for a new and certainly needed WikiProject. The Aromanians/Vlachs, Megleno-Romanians/Meglenites and Istro-Romanians/Ćiribirci are poorly known peoples in the Balkans, the only ones that are Romance-speaking apart of the Romanians. Tagging pages related to these with WikiProject templates can turn problematic, see this talk page for example [1], saturated with 7 different templates. I was thus thinking that giving them their own WikiProject could increase organization on Wikipedia about info on these peoples and increase their representation in the project, perhaps even attracting members of these groups into working at Wikipedia. The project could be split into three task forces for each of the three.

If you're interested, please ping me here or message me on my talk page. Expressing your interest in the existence of such a project is enough, you will not be compromised or pressured into working in a topic area you might lose interest to soon. After (if) I recruit enough support, I will start a formal proposal and ping you there. Regards, Super Ψ Dro 20:57, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

European Union

The European Union article has been thoroughly rearranged over the last week and discussion is currently ongoing at Talk:European Union about whether those changes have improved the article. It would be helpful if members of your wiki project could contribute. For reference, is the version of the article from before the recent changes. Furius (talk) 10:44, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
