I moved [[:File:Lord Kitchener duty5.jpg]] to [[:File:Earl Roberts duty5.jpg]], but it's currently not in any articles ([[Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts]] is pretty full), so it's not really eligible to be an FP. Durova, I have now been reported for removing comments you made to the John Pershing article. With God as my witness, I did not do this. What's going on here?Mk5384 (talk) 14:51, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Look; I'm trying to explain that I didn't remove your comments. It's important to me that you believe me. I have never vandalised. Three times in a row, when I was trying to post a comment, it said that there was an "edit conflict", and my comment didn't register. Maybe that had something to do with your comment not registering; I don't know. I swear that I did not remove anything. I have now been reported to ANI for something that I never did. Your an admin.-please help me.Mk5384 (talk) 15:08, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what you're talking about, but I'll try to work this out. Durova412 15:36, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I may not be the most agreeable person with this, but I'm no vandal. I haven't removed comments from people who have been downright horrid towards me. You have been nothing but civil, and I certainly wouldn't remove yours. Please check the time stamps, or whatever you said that you could do to verify my honesty. Thanks again.Mk5384 (talk) 15:46, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lise,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture File:Get fat3.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on April 1, 2010. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2010-04-01. This is a bit shorter than I normally write, but for April Fool's Day I wanted to avoid any serious discussion of the definition of beauty over the years. howcheng {chat} 17:10, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is absolutely perfect just as it is. Thank you for selecting it. :) Durova412 17:48, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is this FP material?

Hey Durova! I just uploaded a higher-res version of File:The death of general warren at the battle of bunker hill.jpg. I'm curious if you think it could be feature material (it looks to me like it's significantly better quality than the previous versions, probably because the MFA did some work on it), and what it might take to get it there. (It may be possible to get a d/l from the MFA at more bits or in different format, but their server tilted at serving a 2000px jpg). Magic♪piano 21:40, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is that border painted on or is it a picture frame? This may seem highly technical, but there's a copyright issue that would intrude if it's part of a three dimensional frame (the frame would need to be cropped out for licensing reasons). Other than that, if you could obtain a higher resolution file from the collection that owns the original then it would probably be a viable featured picture candidate. No guarantees how the reviewers would react, but worth nominating. Durova412 22:52, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I know the border might be an issue. Unfortunately, the painting is not presently on display -- the MFA has been expanding, and most of its American gallery has been in storage. There's obviously not any rush, but the galleries are supposed to reopen later this year, so I'll probably be able to have a look. The image appears to be the highest resolution their web site will serve; a higher res version would require dialog to acquire. Magic♪piano 23:52, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Special edition WikiProject Baseball triple crown

I think that WP:MLB has managed to earn a special edition triple crown without even knowing it...? See the info below. Thanks!

Nice! So what would you want as your triple crown custom emblem? A baseball? Durova412 22:53, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for requesting mediation. There is one minor mistake, though. Both at ANI and at the article talk page I stated the intent to hand over dispute resolution to formal mediation and withdraw. Please remove my name. If I were formally listed and declined, then the mediation request would be rejected procedurally. I am not an involved party and have not edited the article in any meaningful way. Durova412 22:47, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interested in this image?

I just found this image (published in the USA in 1919) on Flickr and thought of you. Is it something you'd find interesting? My image work is almost entirely uploading pictures I've taken, maps I've made, and unmodified pictures from HABS, so I don't pay attention to your work, but I know that you've worked with older publications such as the Get Fat poster. Golden W Award

Hi Durova,

I wanted to let you know that you're within arms reach of a Golden W Award, something very few editors qualify for. TonytheTiger will likely be the first awardee in about a week. Part of the reason the award is difficult to get is because of the featured picture on the main page requirement, which you've already completed. Anyway, I wanted to invite you to give it a go if you are interested. And thanks for your dedication to Wikipedia. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 04:52, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for thinking of me. Actually, though, I've never done an "in the news" entry. Durova412 05:29, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Getting an ITN in is much, MUCH easier than a featured article or a featured picture. TonytheTiger had never done an On This Day, and the award spurred him to submit one (that's the easiest...everything submitted gets in as long as it meets basic standards). You've come a long way, baby. I encourage you to put an ITN in and become one of the few, the proud, the Golden W's. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 05:19, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why would I want to do that, when I am an administrator at Wikinews? Durova412 05:20, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you just want to do it. Keep on typing in "Recent Earthquakes" in Google. That's how I got mine. Good luck, and I love the huge header that pops up whenever you try to edit your talk page. Especially the part about Jimbo. Buggie111 (talk) 00:07, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the encouragement. Will weigh this and consider it. As a Wikinewsie, I'm not entirely convinced that Wikipedia is the best place to cover breaking news. The Wikinews policy structure has advantages for that type of material, and attempts to cover breaking news within Wikipedia have been known to generate problems with undue weight and recentism. hello

What is Durova's 'dead tree' criteria on User:Alison Cassidy page? --Chris.urs-o (talk) 15:46, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's a proposed standard for BLP courtesy deletions per request of the subject. If a person isn't notable enough to have their own entry in a reliably published paper and ink encyclopedia (including specialty encyclopedias) then we would delete their biography, no questions asked. This includes specialty encyclopedias. So David Bowie wouldn't be able to opt out (he has an entry in the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll), but a fellow who played bass for Bowie on a couple of albums could get a courtesy deletion if he wanted it. Durova412 15:58, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
wow, you are answering fast, thx. I do not think Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll sooo important, ;). I think the BLP criteria for masters and professors very strict. --Chris.urs-o (talk) 16:34, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We're talking apples and oranges. "Dead Trees" is a standard for courtesy deletion, not a standard for inclusion. It applies to any situation where a living person meets the notability criteria but doesn't want to have a biography here. Durova412 16:40, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ok thx Durova. By the way, ur Chicago roundhouse picture 2008 is really very nice. --Chris.urs-o (talk) 17:30, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not copyrighted, because it was created by a painter during the Communist era of Albania. All rights belong to the state archives of Albania, making it pd. I wanted to do it myself but I'm not familiar with the procedure, so any advice would be very helful.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 11:06, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Secret Wikipedia Email List

Hi there, I am a new user, and I saw all over the internet about a secret wikipeida emailing list that you are in charge of. I am a new user, but I was wondering if I could get in on this list, to know the ins and outs of what agenda wikipedia wants to push. Do you have any comments on this, or the upcoming Conde Nast article about some of the stuff going on with wikipedia? Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eaglerider777 (talkcontribs) 19:15, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The wonderful thing about rumors is rumors are wonderful things. Their tops are made out of rubber; their bottoms are made out of springs. I don't know anything about an upcoming Conde Nast article. If something's getting written that mentions me it must be like in 2007 when a couple of places went to print with wildly inaccurate stories without contacting me for comment beforehand. Thank you for asking. Seriously, I don't know how to answer exactly. Spent nearly 200 miles on the road today. Feeling tired and sunburned and ready to drop. Is there something specific? Help in deciphering 1860s handwriting

Washington Sept. 25, 1865

My dear Mr Heco,
I have just received
your letter of the 31st of July and
I thank you for remembering

all things submit ourselves to
his will. He is omniscient and

powerless.

Mentorship coming out of RfC/U

Durova,

Would you look at this discussion of a proposed mentorship that came out of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jagged 85. It looks like the editor may be amenable to such a mentorship, which will involve not only supervising his edits but supervising his removal of the several hundred problematic edits he has made. Syncategoremata (talk · contribs), who has made many level-headed comments during the RfC, is willing to undertake the supervision.

Your comments on the mechanics of such a relationship (and on the RfC if you have the time) would be most welcome.

Hehe, at first I thought it was some kind of vandalism, but the picture was added buy the creator of the article himself, who seems to be a serious editor who apparently did it in a good faith. Well, modern art is still art :) --capmo 21:17, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sort of tempted to fix it... (facepalm) Never thought that would find its way into article space on any project. But it's so funny. Thank you again. Durova412 21:30, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sound of the Day

Amazingly, even though I am a musucian, I have never thought of adding Featured Sounds to the Main Page. That's brilliant idea. It must have been discussed before but I can find where. Any clue? Answer on my talkpage if you prefer though I will watch your talkpage also --Jubileeclipman 00:08, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. Gave the location at the poster's user talk, as requested. Would renew the offer to remove my FPs from the main page queue with minor adjustments, if sounds were included. That way POTD could become Media of the Day without making other image contributors wait longer. Best wishes! :) Durova412 21:03, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Durova. Now I understand your last sentence (which I totally misread: my apologies). I might revisit that RfC, soon, in fact, as I have one more point to make that will help contextualise my "Going Nowhere" View (as if the Comments section doesn't do that already...) The bald statement might not be entirely helpful as it stands, now I think on. Cheers! --Jubileeclipman 21:31, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. The issue about photo credit at POTD is probably unresolvable: it could theoretically change if the community supported our photographers with a project to identify and resolve license infringements. It's usually more complex than filing a DMCA: the first challenge is to find out which desk to contact, then the second challenge is to get them to reply. As long as each photographer has to handle that all alone, they're going to fiercely defend the status quo as the simplest way of decreasing problems.
There are fewer obstacles to converting POTD to media of the day: the main potential problem is the length of the queue, and my offer would keep the queue roughly unchanged for everybody else. The modification I would make on the original offer would be to keep certain items in the queue: collaborative restorations with shared credit should get their turn, and certain restorations were made possible by special donations from cultural institutions. As a thank-you to those institutions those items would stay in the queue. Cheers and best wishes, Durova412 17:40, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review of an image

If you'd have any thoughts on Wikipedia:Picture_peer_review#Herbert_Spencer - I also suspect it could benefit from restoration. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 16:13, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you could obtain an uncompressed version of that image it might be a viable candidate for featured picture. Durova412 21:06, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I could email the Smithsonian, also their legend about selling pictures makes me not so optimistic. Do you know if anybody asked them for collaboration with Wikimedia? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:49, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The last time I checked, the Smithsonian was claiming copyright over reproductions of PD artwork. So it's sort of a dead end unless someone wants to negotiate them out of that. Durova412 17:42, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Brand new FPC nom

For Johnny Evers. Lemme know what you think! Staxringold talkcontribs 21:00, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I won't undercut the candidacy by making this the first mention at FPC, but you missed three scratches next to his elbow. The lighting is harsh; wondering whether a shadow/highlight adjustment might bring more dimension out of it. Remind me: are you using GIMP? If so, leave word when the scratches are fixed and I'll see whether Photoshop can give it a better histogram. Best wishes! Durova412 21:10, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am using GIMP. I know the lighting isn't perfect, sadly it's what we've got. I'll give those scratches a correction and let you know. Staxringold talkcontribs 21:13, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Sometimes it's possible to coax information out of the far ends of a histogram. It'll be worth a try. :) Durova412 21:14, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you. Okay, my turn. :) Durova412 21:28, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is there any chance you could hop onto Skype and let me shoot you the file? Shadow/highlight does good things for this image, but now it needs another round of spot removal. Not much time today (hospice situation irl). Best, Durova412 21:38, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the reminder. It isn't a question of wanting or not wanting: per the notice at top of this talk page my availability is reduced. Nonfree use rationales can often be written for deceased persons. The reason why they almost never get accepted for living people is because, theoretically, a living person could be photographed again under free license. Obviously that isn't an option here. CC question

Does this image's CC tag qualify it as a freely usable image? Commons doesn't seem to have a no-remix tag. Not great quality, but the only free image of Leiter I can find. Staxringold talkcontribs 17:47, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's an NC license, which isn't compatible with WMF license structure. (Snaps fingers). Good try! Durova412 03:29, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help with a historic image...

Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/MacArthur Family really needs your help. Do you have a little time for an old soldier and his family? ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 02:13, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Durova, I saw your answer over at the FPC page. I'd be happy to learn how to restore the image myself if you're willing to teach me. I've got Photoshop CS4, and I'd call myself an intermediate user (I can do reflections and things like that). ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 00:50, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. Would there be any chance of obtaining a better source file? Uncompressed formats (usually TIFF) are best, and we try to get clean scans of 10MB or larger. For this type of work an image isn't big if it's less than 100MB. Durova412 01:17, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It was shot with a 7.1 megapixel point-and-shoot (I didn't expect to find it when I did). I have an 8 megapixel camera which is a little better, and can shoot it again. Any tips for how to shoot it (camera settings, etc)? I'm not much of a photographer, but I can follow instructions. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 02:17, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's a book called Digital Restoration from Start to Finish that covers rephotography in chapter 4. Google Books hosts the title; you could check whether that answers your questions? I'll have time for more detailed dialog tomorrow. Best wishes, Durova412 02:37, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Am reading it now. Thanks! ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 04:00, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out the section on rephotography is three pages, and one is redacted. Of the two that remain, they don't say much that is helpful, except to refer me to another book on rephotography (which isn't available locally) and to tell me to use an SLR. Oh well. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 07:40, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look?

I hope you are doing well. I've always been impressed with the large number of featured images you've provided to the encyclopedia, and look forward to the new ones you turn out. I have several FAs and FLs, and am interested in going for at least one FP. At Commons, I have uploaded over 1,300 images for a large variety of articles, but I think only a few could possibly qualify as FPs. I was wondering if you could take a look at my subpage to determine if any of the images I listed have any potential (with alterations of course). I'll be happy to take any to WP:PPR at your suggestion, but don't want to mass nominate all of them, especially if they wouldn't work (or all, I don't know). I'm in no big hurry and recognize you're busy so please take a look at your convenience. If you aren't interested, no worries. Please let me know if you have any questions. --Happy editing! When is consensus bullying?

I feel as though I am being bullied out of Wikipedia when all I do for the most part is qualitatively improve articles by adding citations. I have a group of malign editors that have formed a cohort against me. They have searched really hard to find a few matters of dispute out of my 20,000 or more edits that I have made to this Project. I would like to voice my concern. Would somebody like to interview me? Durova, there was a user whose account was silenced as they chose to converse in verse. Where is the openness and inclusiveness? Durova, I would appreciate some of your time.

WOOF! New article

This arbitration case has been closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following is a summary of the remedies enacted:

  • All editors who are party to this case are instructed to read the principles, to review their own past conduct in the light of them, and if necessary to modify their future conduct to ensure full compliance with them.
  • Editors are reminded that when editing in controversial subject areas it is all the more important to comply with Wikipedia policies. In addition, editors who find it difficult to edit a particular article or topic from a neutral point of view and to adhere to other Wikipedia policies are counselled that they may sometimes need or wish to step away temporarily from that article or subject area, and to find other related but less controversial topics in which to edit.
  • Any uninvolved administrator may, in his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor editing Transcendental meditation or other articles concerning Transcendental meditation and related biographies of living people, broadly defined, if, after a warning, that editor repeatedly or seriously violates the behavioural standards or editorial processes of Wikipedia in connection with these articles.
  • Uninvolved administrators are invited to monitor the articles in the area of conflict to enforce compliance by editors with, in particular, the principles outlined in this case. Enforcing administrators are instructed to focus on fresh and clear-cut matters arising after the closure of this case rather than on revisiting historical allegations.
  • From time to time, the conduct of editors within the topic may be re-appraised by any member of the Arbitration Committee and, by motion of the Arbitration Committee, further remedies may be summarily applied to specific editors who have failed to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner.
  • User:Fladrif is (i) strongly admonished for incivility, personal attacks, and assumptions of bad faith; and (ii) subject to an editing restriction for one year. Should he make any edits which are judged by an administrator to be uncivil, personal attacks, or assumptions of bad faith, he may be briefly blocked, up to a week in the event of repeated violations. After three blocks, the maximum block shall increase to one month.
  • Should any user subject to a restriction or topic ban in this case violate that restriction or ban, that user may be blocked, initially for up to one month, and then with blocks increasing in duration to a maximum of one year, with the topic ban clock restarting at the end of the block.

On behalf of the Arbitration Committee, ~ Amory (utc) 18:31, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Best method joining and improving maps.

I have scanned the following images: File:Lille 1922 orig.jpg, File:Borinage sud 1933 orig.jpg, File:Chimay 1933 orig.jpg. These maps where cut up and pasted on canvas. In theory I can join them together again. What is the best method for this? Unfortunately these maps where used and there are some colour lines wich have to be removed. How do I do this? Do I use the opposite colour and then correct the grey scale and contrast? This is an experiment and I want to do more scans, but I want to have the methodology rigth.

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I'm Claudi Balaguer, a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. I know that you are also trying to obtain a Californian Chapter and I sincerely hope that you will succeed and I think that all the members of our association feel likewise because denying it implies, in my opinion, going against the spreading of knowledge creating boundaries to creativity and collective voluntary work. So maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages, cultures and local or regional entities in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care! I wish I could visit your great, beautiful and sunny region once more soon! If you ever need my (probably "our" too) help you can count on me even though I'm currently really far away from California. Really beautiful and interesting user pages by the way, the Botanical building is really beautiful! Capsot (talk) 15:44, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images concerns

I'm a little concerned about some photos recently uploaded and the rationales and copyright concerns. Have you seen the images uploaded for Natalie Wood and Elia Kazan? See this list and the rationales for them. Now, Natalie Wood was a spectacular looking woman, but somehow I doubt that File:Natalie Wood Still1.jpg was taken in 1960 and that is the face of a 22 year old, especially a 22 year old Natalie Wood. Compare that face to her face in West Side Story in 1961, it isn't that young. I think that face is at least 30 years old. I've looked and couldn't find one like it so far anywhere. That thick, fat eyeliner was SO not 1960. It's LATE 1960s at least. I simply don't buy it as within the 1923-1963 date. I buy the File:Natalie Wood.jpg as in that era, although I think it's earlier than 1960, but it is in no way in the same age range as the first one. From the image pages the Elia Kazan images were scanned from a published book. If the Elia Kazan images are from a published book, the copyright for that book also covers the images, does it not? One was taken from the Life Magazine archive. Any thoughts on these? You seem to be the go-to person on image questions, and I truly question the public domain and year claims for these. Thanks. I moved File:Lord Kitchener duty5.jpg to File:Earl Roberts duty5.jpg, but it's currently not in any articles (Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts is pretty full), so it's not really eligible to be an FP. Perhaps you'd like to take care of that? Thanks. howcheng {chat} 18:59, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
