I don't know if this is all and how it links up. There is a legit article related to this, but then here are also accounts blocked in this area. Also, I do not see yet the connection between some of the links, though all the editors do link up via-via (and there may be more) and most are SPA-like. Can someone with more insight in this look into this? --Dirk Beetstra T C 21:30, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More in the COIBot report. Looks like of 220 additions in the LiWa database, 90% are rather spammy. This site is sponsored by the government of Fukuoka Prefecture and yet the link additions are... rather brazen. Blacklist? MER-C 10:20, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    COIBot - LinkSaver

Some might already have noticed, I am working on rewriting the LinkSaver in COIBot. I have expanded on this here: MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist#COIBot - LinkSaver, but I thought that I could spread the news here as well. --Dirk Beetstra T C 19:49, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Today's Signpost

    Academic spam experiment

    Check out this article:

Did this guy communicate with anybody here? If not, I suspect he not only wasted some editors' time but also some of his own. I've expressed my own thoughts at:

    --A. B. (talkcontribs) 14:20, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not with me. If we would have had a better detection system and more editors actually watching what is coming in, this would not have become so big, I tend to have not much mercy with links which are placed like this was here. --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:34, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Going forward, I wonder if there's a way we could enlist this person to help us in some way? He could be a real asset. If he just publishes an academic paper that none of us ever see then it's not very useful to us. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 14:49, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, that might be of interest. More hands would be welcome anyway, we don't exactly have an excess of editors here helping out, and seen some responses that I have seen lately, most editors don't even know spam exists on Wikipedia (I saw a comment to XLinkBot to that extend, and I have been following some RfA's lately, while editors count tagging of articles for deletion and bringing articles to AfD, no-one seems to care that admins are also able to edit the MediaWiki namespace, and answers to some questions in the some actual RfA's were .. just regurgitating WP:SPAM without being able to translate to the actual situation). --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:59, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As the Signpost article states, it is my intention to cooperate on solutions to this matter. I am going to politely decline to comment further at this time. When things settle down, I will be happy to have a civil discussion and work towards preventative measures for the future. West.andrew.g (talk) 15:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
FYI for others here -- this looks like a potentially useful tool: STiki.
I wonder if it (or the underlying code) can be used to improve or complement our existing IRC-based tools? --A. B. (talkcontribs) 15:21, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It may be interesting. I am not good in Java, but I'd be interested in the techniques it applies. LiWa3 does some things, but those are simple counting actions (how often did this user use this domain, or how many of this domain were added by IPs, and compares that with the broader picture; those are the ones that fill up Category:Open Local COIBot Reports). I do find that a lot of the links that are detected are suspect, but I think that we might be able to find more with better algorithms. --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:35, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Andrew likely also has access to more computing resources at his school (one of the world's wealthiest) than we do! --A. B. (talkcontribs) 15:49, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I know Java (pretty much exclusively) so I might have a look at it. Unfortunately, there are too many things right now competing for my free time. MER-C 09:09, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Society of American Archivists: SEO using Wikipedia

A second article in the Signpost:

    --A. B. (talkcontribs) 15:11, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But they are archivists (or librarians, or museum curators .. or ..)! All their links are on topic, useful, they provide a link to a wealth of information. Their link additions can't be considered spam! They should be encouraged to add as many links as they possibly can. or not? --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:19, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
