London Buses route 279 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London.

History

Route 279 began in 1961 as part of the Trolleybus replacement program for route 679 between Smithfield and Waltham Cross and Flamstead End (Saturdays).

It was extended Saturdays from Waltham Cross to Hammond Street Rising Star in 1963 to replace the withdrawn section of former route 205. The Monday to Friday service was extended to Hammond Street in 1970.

Extended full time to Hammond Street in 1976 to replace the withdrawn routes 205 and 205A.

Withdrawn between Hammond Street and Waltham Cross and replaced by 259 in 1985.

Extended at nights to Upshire in 1986.

Withdrawn between Upshire and Waltham Cross & between Smithfield and Holloway in 1992. Withdrawn between Holloway and Manor House Station in November 2006.

Night bus N279 runs the night for route 279 between Waltham Cross and Manor House and then continue to Trafalgar Square via route 29.

From 15 October 2011, Arriva London has successfully retained route 279 on new five year contracts. [1]
