how to show pdf icon next to link?
Is there a way to get the pdf icon to show up on a link that does not include .pdf in the url? I am looking at the first ref on Seville, which ends up at a pdf, even though it does not show .pdf in the url. I'd like to add the pdf icon so that others who click the link know what to expect. For example, the second ref on that page has the little pdf icon, which I assume is added automatically. Is there a way to make it show up? RudolfRed (talk) 02:54, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

questions about proposing deletion
I want to propose the article John DePetro for deletion. I read the help page on deletion, and it makes my head hurt. I added the Proposed deletion marker to the top of the John DePetro article. It is apparently not causing the article to show up in Articles for deletion. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to add it to that list by editing, but when I tried to do that the preview did not show it in place even though I used the same form as the other articles for that day. Have I done enough to have this automatically deleted in seven days if no one objects? help. thanks. Trudyjh (talk) 03:27, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

question about un-merging or renaming
There used to be an article named Harissa (dish) which is now Harees and I wanted to move Harissa (dish) back but the name change was not allowed, I'm guessing for technical reasons? Harees is an Arabic variant of the dish Harissa and Keşkek is the Turkish variant. Harissa is also a Tunisian pepper paste. I have a lot of information to add to Harissa (dish) and I see that some of the material has been deleted, and the current page needs to be improved. Thinkfood (talk) 04:34, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- You can't move it, because there is already a page at Harissa (dish). You can edit the page so it is no longer a redirect, but you should discuss it at Harees talk page first. RudolfRed (talk) 04:46, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Removing redirects
I am trying to figure out how I can remove the redirect for Merle Watson that redirects to the article for Doc Watson, so that I can write a unique article on him (because I think he is notable in his own right). I tried to read WP:Redirects, and, maybe it's because I'm tired, but I absolutely couldn't decipher it. Can someone explain to me, in plain English, how to remove the redirect, or do it for me?

How do I change the version of a picture without creating a new file/image?

- Your most recent upload is File:Htaft.jpeg. If you click through to the page on commons, commons:File:Htaft.jpeg, you should see a link named "Upload a new version of this file" just above the "File usage on Commons" sub-heading. Template - transclusion or substitution?
Should Template:NFCC issue note be transcluded or substituted? I ask because it currently uses substitution and another user said at User talk:Toshio Yamaguchi#Template:NFCC issue note that it should be transcluded. Transcluding the template would break the current functionality of the parameter that dates the template. - Couldn't you hardcode the date so that it substitutes upon transclusion and not be a parameter, i.e., using <includeonly>~~~~~</includeonly>, or use it as a parameter but substitute the five tildes, i.e. prefix <includeonly>subst:</includeonly>?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:01, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

- Here's some advice I just saw (PrimeHunter said essentially what I did):
- My understanding is that it may be possible to recover an account in such a situation, but it is a tedious process and you will need to convince a number of editors with very advanced permissions to help you. If you really want to go down that road, I think your journey starts with a request at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard. If your not terribly attached to your old account, PrimeHunter's advice is definitely the way to go.

Arranging info on article
Hi guys, wondered if someone could help me improve on the layout of an article titled Liverpool Pride. As you can see, I've tried to include info on acts that performed at previous Liverpool Pride festivals but as you can see the layout is not very aesthetically pleasing. Can anyone help me improve? Name conflict
I created the redirect yesterday and am now wondering which name is more correct for the subject: Cibecue Community School or Dishchii'bikoh Community School? The evidence on both sides is substantial:
- The Arizona Interscholastic Association record and most other high school sports writers outside of the area use Cibecue. (That said, the White Mountain Independent newspaper, which serves the town of Cibecue, does not.)
- The school has two websites, one under each name (cibecuecommunityschool.org and dishchiibikoh.com) — though the .org domain uses Dishchii'bikoh on the banner at the top and elsewhere. The two sites appear to have matching content.
- The school's sports uniforms don't offer a solid conclusion: baseball has "Cibecue" and football has "Dishchii'bikoh".
Which name meets Wikipedia conventions better to be the location of the article? (The other site definitely should be a redirect.) Raymie (t • c) 19:13, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

- Requests are made at Wikipedia:Requests for import. However, it isn't possible to import from WikiPilipinas. Therefore, the best way to handle this (assuming the source has an appropriate license) is by placing a link to the source in the Wikipedia article to provide the attribution. China hurdles to IRC at wikipedia (English)
I'm helping my host university to add themselves to English wikipedia since most of the other universities in town are there, but this one is not. The IRC chat feature won't work from my university login because the CAPTCHA and certain flash features appear to be blocked or disabled. Also my wikipedia comment was responded to with a link to Youtube. However the entirety of the google ecosystem is also blocked here in the wild west part of China. My question is about workarounds for people authoring/editing from locations where these software hurdles exist. Part 2: The actual article involved was slightly different, in that Bush was the recipient of a letter, not the signor of a treaty. Here's the actual example:
In Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, there was a section reading:
- "[in 2003], the then-crown prince Abdullah wrote a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush..."
In 2012, an editor changed this to:
- "[in 2003], the then-crown prince Abdullah wrote a letter to former U.S. President George W. Bush..."
Is this edit:
- A) Incorrect – The presence of former is confusing, and could either mean either he is now (when?) out of office or was out of office already at the time of the letter (which would be wrong in this case).
- B) Correct – Do we have to change all instances of titles when people get voted out of office? This seems like an awful lot of work, and might be better accomplished by selective transclusion so it can be changed in one place only. I certainly haven't seen evidence of this.
- C) Unnecessary – Not incorrect, not necessary. We don't care about the ambiguity introduced, but don't want to run around inserting former everywhere.
I again vote "A" because he was President at the time of the letter, and that time is explicitly stated. I would vote "B" if the article were about something that occurred after his term of office. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 03:09, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think "Former" should ever be used in front of President. If we are talking about things done as President then it should say President. If it was done before or after he was President then it should either use a title that is appropriate for the time period, Senator Kennedy, General Eisenhower, Chief Justice Taft or if they don't hold a title at the time just use the last name as we do in other biographies. Licensing question
I uploaded a photo produced in a sports-card format by USRowing. It has no copyright symbol on it and is freely distributed. Nonetheless I got the permission of the executive director of the organization to post it on the relative Wikipedia site. However I can find no place where I can enter that fact that it is posted with permission (and of course it is flagged for removal). How can I proceed to indicate permission received? Warfaze: Recreating a deleted article
The article on Warfaze has come to my notice recently. Its been speedy deleted 4 times already on grounds of A7 (group), G11 and G12. I believe, it was all because the article was created each time by inexperienced editors who failed to establish notability or understand copyright laws. I have taken a look and found that the subject (a Bangladeshi rock band) is part of Om Gupta's Encyclopaedia of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (including the article by G Booth on "Popular artists and their audiences" - can't access that one - which was cited by Martin Clayton in "Rock to Raga: the many lives of the Indian guitar", has quite a large number specific articles discussing the subject, its work or its members on The Daily Star, Bangladesh (check: this, this, this or the google site serach result), and other sources (check: this, this, this or the 414,000 results google hits. By policies and guidelines this looks very much a subject that can have an article, of course, written and referenced properly.
But, somehow I can't recreate it. May be its edit protected or something. How can I create the article? Aditya(talk • contribs) 04:14, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

There is no mention of the fact that a number of the party's principles including Pauline Hanson were sent to jail, they were then subsequently released under somewhat unusual circumstances.
At the time there was comment regarding the activities of Mr Abbott, Mr Costello and some of Mr Costello's inlaws,
the impartiality of an only too ready to oblige judiciary also got some mention.

Picture upload for a new article and copyright question
Hallo, I'm new at the English Wikipedia and would like to add the article about the company I work for in the English version, too. I have put the article in my user page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Petrotest/Petrotest and would like to add the picture of Berthold Pensky. The link is already there but I can't upload anything at the moment. Is it possible to link to the picture in the German Wikipedia (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Berthold_Pensky.jpg)? The license in the English Wikipedia should be PD-US-1923-abroad or/and PD-EU-no author disclosure. This picture was taken before 1894 - please see the original source and more information of the picture here: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2005696308/. For the German version we looked up the photographer but didn't find anything except the old address and the name of the photographer. - Thanks for your help and advice. The information especially the dates are taken from the German Commercial Registry and out of an old lawsuit. I'm not sure about how to prove those dates since the files are not available in the internet. The part of the court file that I have here at the office is a collection of different letters. One can ask for inspection of the Commercial Registry but you have to pay a fee for that. The files are in German and especially the old ones are handwritten and hard to read. Some other popular sites, like Twitter, Facebook, and Google, publish on their websites little micro-icon banners ("like this on Facebook", "tweet this", etc.). One adds these to one's own website, with parameters set to link to the appropriate section of that website. AN/TWQ-1 Avenger infobox

Dear wikipedians, I adjusted some numbers on the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger page, section 4.1 - Dimensions. The weight was horribly off (the kg weight stated was 4300, half the '8600' pounds weight) and I changed some other numbers, too, however the old values are in the infobox, which doesn't feature an 'edit' link. Now, who do I contact about the infobox. I remember that some articles are tagged "This (foobar) article is a stub" but this one isn't (and if I judge it correctly, it is too detailed to be called a stub) but there have been tags like "An article maintained by the Military Taskforce" on other articles, too. For clarification, I am not talking about a military taskforce, but about a taskforce of volunteers who edit wikipedia articles about military topics. - For the first question, you can simply edit the article yourself. The edit link is at the top of the article. Then just scroll down and make your changes. It's best if you cite your sources though. See Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for that. For the second, if you click on the link to the talk page of the article, you'll see a banner at the top directing you to Wikipedia:WikiProject Military History. 2 articles that contain incorrect information
Dear Wikipedia Team Member,
I am trying to correct 2 articles in the German version of Wikipedia. But it is almost a month now and the change is not accepted. The problem is that I know prof. Michael Schoenemann, who has found the company GFT (everybody can check this in the German Notary Service) and this information is what I would like to change.
Please advise me how to speed the process of changing the content since it is wrong, and it can be proved wrong.

I have just created a page called "Ryan Woods" about a footballer whom plays for Shrewsbury town

Editing Error
For some strange reason, I cannot link anything when trying to edit and also when I try to insert a reference it will not let me!! Author did not edit in his last update, how...?
The author on link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_orthography did recently an update, though still kept in his alphabet the old Greek instead of the modern Greek. Because I do not know how to edit I come here to ask the author or someone who does know how to edit, to edit the next:
In the alphabet it is stil "beta", in modern Greek it is "vita". So if someone could change it...

- I'm afraid I don't know what you are referring to. The article Greek orthography doesn't contain either 'beta' or 'vita' (but if it did, the English name for the letter β is 'beta'). Bug on posting new talk page posts or signatures
Is there a bug on Wikipedia just now? every time i try to make new talk page post it redirect back t blank page but does not create the page, also when i try pressing the signature button it just looks like it is process it then does nothing and refresh the page. It is quite annoying and meaning i am struggling to post. There are several pages about references and you didn't say which directions you read but try Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. - You have listed no useful sources for establishing notability. There's *probably* enough here to escape CSD A7 but this would be deleted at articles for deletion, unless some real reliable, independent, secondary sources were found discussing the subject in detail (based on one of your comments in a thread below, please see our conflict of interest guideline). Who's Who is a publication that is compiled by questionnaires filled out by the subject or someone who knows him or her, and is thus very much not an independent source "with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy" as required. It's not always purely a paid directory however. Some of them do try to be somewhat selective, only soliciting autobiographical entries from people they believe to be of some note (other are paid directories), but in either form they are not independent nor secondary sources. The second source just verifies that the subject works somewhere. It's not an independent source source discussing the subject. The same thing for the OED. Are there articles written about the person by third parties with significant treatment? Newspaper stories? Magazine articles? Book treatment?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:11, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Some photos are designated SHARE ALIKE and the web site states they can be used as long as an attribution is given. The same applies for GENERIC images. I have heard that if such images are used in an iBook textbook they will negate any copyright protection for other images owned by the author.Is this true as I cannot find any such warning on the Wikipedia website. - Sounds like total nonsense. Why would use of a freely licensed image with proper attribution have any effect on another image that is not freely licensed? If for example, the book stated some blanket text such as "all images in this book are freely licensed..." or other type of blanket release, that would be different—the non-free images owned by the party making the blanket statement would be then released and any they didn't own would remain copyrighted with the false release being a lawsuit waiting to happen, but no I cannot see any way this could be true. Of course, the author would be wise to mark their copyright inside of or in conjunction with each of their own images included, and give credit and use by permission information for ones they do not own. Foreign language translation of article being read, by mouse pointer or between lines.
This would be a good example about 'reading between the lines'! How about an option when say, you read something in latin to see the applicable line translation underneath or place the mouse pointer on a word and see it's translation in the mouse's ivory box. Same between pairs of other languages? That would help a lot many who want to read the specific language version without reading the article in another language - usually quite different, and many other similar situations. Strange message received from Wilkipedia

I looked at Wikipedia today and there was a Message displayed for me. I clicked on the link and it basically accused me of making an inappropriate edit of a page about Lucy.
But I have never visited this page and certainly never edited it.
The problem may arise because my ISP (BT) uses dynamic IP addresses.

- Any data is attributed to the IP address, not to you as a person. The IP address has been used to make an inappropriate edit, and due to the nature of the IP address assignment of your ISP, you happened to receive the message, even though you were not the same person as the one making the inappropriate edit. This has no consequence for you as a person. Wikipedia is very much aware of the transient nature of IP assignment and it will not be held against you. In the most extreme case, it might cause you not to be able to edit without creating an account, but that is it. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:55, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Share alike advice.........
Thank you for your clarification ........ Sounds like total nonsense. Why would use of a freely licensed image with proper attribution have any effect on another image that is not freely licensed? If for example, the book stated some blanket text such as "all images in this book are freely licensed..." or other type of blanket release, that would be different—the non-free images owned by the party making the blanket statement would be then released and any they didn't own would remain copyrighted with the false release being a lawsuit waiting to happen, but no I cannot see any way this could be true. Of course, the author would be wise to mark their copyright inside of or in conjunction with each of their own images included, and give credit and use by permission information for ones they do not own. I am writing an IBook and one of the contributors to the IBook forum emphatically insisted that SHARE ALIKE photos should not be used and warned they would make all the authours photos devoid of copyright protection. - What do you mean by "declare my affiliation"? Do you want to admit a conflict of interest? Or do you just want to be credited with creating the article? I have visited and/or spoken with 3 lawyers in St. Louis regarding the treatment of my 90 year old aunt in a nursing home. I have been denied 3 times because of the expense involved to take the case to trial. They have piddled around so long that the nursing home has had time to change their answers. Transferring PD textlogo file to Commons
Is there an automated way of resizing a file that was originally uploaded at low resolution as non-free, but found to be PD to a higher resolution and transferring it to Commons? Do I have to do the resizing myself or is there an on-wiki process for that I could use (as far as I know, we have bots for resizing files, not sure whether there is one for this case)? - If it was originally uploaded at low resolution, there is no automatic process that can increase the resolution of what has been uploaded. You can't generate information out of nothing. Yes, you could resize the image (or I could do it for you if you don't know how), but that would not help, you would just get a larger and fuzzier image, not a higher-resolution image. What you should try to do, if possible, is find the original image, and re-upload it at its full resolution. Maproom (talk) 16:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

wikipedia article not showing up in google search results
Strangely, an article in Wikipedia doesn't turn up in any google search I do, even if I type in the name of the article and Wikipedia in the search bar. Wiki
I have been making wikis for some time now, I have two good wikis at the moment. One gets 2/3 edits a day, the other gets around 8 edits per day. It's all a bit random, on a good day I moght get 40/50 edits , on a rainy day I might get none edits whatsoever. Edit a page without being noticed?
I just logged in today and I noticed that my talk page has changed a bit. Perhaps a past section that I may have removed or archived has been placed there again. - I see no evidence that the section was ever removed from your talk page and no evidence that it was added back in. - While it may be technical possible for an editor with oversight or a developer to have done that, I think its extremely unlikely. Peter O'Toole - Thomas Kinkade's Christmas Cottage
I noticed in the listing of movies in which Peter O'Toole starred that there is no mention of Thomas Kinkade's Christmas Cottage released in 2008 starring Peter O'Toole, Jared Padalecki, and Marcia Gay. I feel this was an excellent movie and certainly worth mentioning as one of Mr. O'toole's credits. Perhaps someone more enterprising than me could add this to his list of films? - It won't let you because the names are too similar. Besides which, what you're doing is a bad idea. Wikipedia is not an advertising medium or platform. If your boss is notable enough, someone will eventually write an article about him that will be neutral and not promotional. Additionally, accounts are meant to be for one person to use. - Three points.
- You asked your question twice, the first time added on to the end of the previous question, and the second time properly, here, with a section header. I have deleted the first version.
- It's not your article, it's an article which you have created. At least I assume you have; I can't see it anywhere. Maybe someone has deleted it already, or maybe you created it with a different account.
- The new articles which appear on the Wikipedia Main Page are a tiny proportion of those which get created and accepted. Don't assume that the one you have created will ever appear there.

earthquakes in 2010
Hi. The July and August monthly figures boxed at right for the year show monthly totals for magnitude 7+ that do not correspond with the respective detailed lists of events - i.e. the detailed lists for those 2 months each show 2 7+ events, while the 7+ magnitude totals in the boxes are, from memory, 3 (July) and 4 (August). - It's about Earthquakes in 2010#July and August. The monthly totals match Earthquakes in 2010#By magnitude but not the list in the section for that month. The July issue is whether 3 2010 Mindanao earthquakes on July 23 count as 1 or 3. The August issue is whether the 12 August earthquake in Ecuador was 6.9 or 7.1. - A wiki is a type of website powered by wiki software. All of the English Wikipedia with millions of articles is one wiki made with the MediaWiki software. Dismas, of course not. The sandbox was just trial and error. I basically copied text from the textbook and experimented with images. I needed to make sure that I can actually do this. - You can blank your sandbox page if you want to use it again (just delete all the text and save). If you want to remove the entire history, you can make a deletion request by putting
{{db-userreq}}

- To answer the unasked question, yes, anyone can edit or view your sandbox. It's just like any other page here. The difference is that people generally don't edit other people's sandboxes because it's slightly rude. ("rude" is a bit harsh. Maybe "frowned upon" would be better.) That said though, I have edited sandbox articles before though because sometimes people will put category links in their sandbox article and that puts the page in that category. Whether they meant to or not. So, I'll go in and just put comment tags around the categories so that the sandbox doesn't show up in the cats. Having a history on the sandbox is a good thing too though. If you're working on an article and then move it into the regular article space, the history will still be maintained. So if more than one person works on a draft article which is later moved to the main article space, the attributions will be maintained in the history. Dismas|(talk) 08:13, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Some coding error
My user page has a few collapsible bars that are transcluded from a user sub-page. The collapsible bars look okay in the sub page when I use Chrome or Firefox. But, when I use Chrome, it doesn't look okay on the user page after transclusion. I have tried shifting around stuff, but they keep folding up. I am pretty sure that there is some error in my coding (which was copied from here and there). Please, take a look and let me know what I can do to fix this. Contesting deletion
hi There appears to be conflicting information about how to dispute the deletion of a removed article. I created 'Austin goh prefix:Wikipedia:Deletion review' and it was immediately tagged for speedy deletion for inappropriate usage of an article. Existing and useless account - any chance to get it?
Hi. I´m from czech wikipedia and I want existing account "Ususfructus", which is unified (I have another account there, but old and I can´t log in here). If he has no edits anywhere and also no logs from 2010, is there any chance to get this account? I think I cannot ask for usurpation, because I can´t create account with this name in czech wikipedia. - I'm unclear about the situation of your current account. What is the username, can you log in with that at the Czech Wikipedia, and do you want edits from that account to be transferred to Ususfructus if you get the name? You may have to first make a usurp request to get the English Ususfructus renamed without taking over the name right away, and then request at the Czech Wikipedia to get your account there renamed to Ususfructus. - Now I don´t understand. I have old account "Norik" on Czech Wikipedia, don´t use it for years and at these days I find that somebody else has it on German Wikipedia. And he/she unified it, so I can log in only at Czech Wikipedia. I thought I will choose a new name, "Ususfructus", but there was the problem, I´ve explained above. What I want is to transfer my account Norik to Ususfructus, if it isn´t possible just create new on. Unfortunatelly:
- With my account I can edit only Czech Wikipedia
- I can´t create Ususfructus anywhere
- You think that I can ask for usurpation, here at English Wikipedia, without being logged in? And what kind of usurpation, renaming my czech account to english Ususfructus? Or should I ask for renaming at Czech Wikipedia (to Ususfructus) first and then come here and ask for usurpation? I suggest you do this in this order: 1) Log in to cs:User:Norik and post at cs:User talk:Norik that you want renaming to Ususfructus. 2) Without logging in, make a request at WP:USURP to have User:Ususfructus renamed so you can get the name later. Link to cs:User talk:Norik in the request. 3) Wait for the request to be reviewed. 4) If the request is satisfied then request renaming of your Czech account at cs:Wikipedie:Změna uživatelského jména. Problem articles
I just came across an article whose content is highly dubious - Ancient Old Jade, where most of the items (perhaps all) shown in the page look like fakes. I'm not even sure if this is a legitimate category of jade. Another page it links to is also suspect - Jade carved WuengJonq. I'm not knowledgeable on jade, so have requested help in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject China#Problem_article to assess if this article is legitimate. There are however enough fake items (a few of them are obviously modern copies of ancient figures found and were originally made of terracotta or bronze, and never of jade) to cause me to have serious concerns that the pages may be used for fraudulent purpose. While I wait for some input about the validity of the article to see if it should be deleted, what is the right way to warn of the content of this article, and deleting the images that are obvious fakes? Tosh
A simple fix: making two articles (Tosh, John Stewart's Daily Show) have the same data.
On the Tosh Page, John Stewart's audience is listed as 200,000 . This disturbed me a bit as it made both Tosh & Colbert Report seem to be much more popular (4x - 11x): so I check and Stewart's audience is described as ca. 2,000,000 in the other article, making sense with the context of the erroneous page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.105.223.98 (talk) 12:21, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- Please link articles you refer to or give exact names. I couldn't find mention of The Daily Show at Tosh.0 but I found this at Daniel Tosh: "Tosh.0 is averaging 2.2 million viewers beating The Daily Show by 200,000 viewers and The Colbert Report by 800,000 viewers." Is that what you refer to? "beating The Daily Show by 200,000 viewers" means getting 200,000 viewers more than The Daily Show. It does not mean that the Daily show has 200,000 viewers. 2,000,000 + 200,000 = 2.2 million so the articles look consistent. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:44, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
