London Buses route 414 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Abellio London,[3] having been handed it from First London.[4]

Of the six bus routes to terminate at Putney Bridge tube station, it is the only one to remain entirely north of the River Thames;[5] the 39 (to Clapham Junction),[6] 85 (to Kingston)[7] and 93 (to North Cheam)[8] run straight through Putney High Street, whereas the 265 (to Tolworth)[9] and 270 (to Mitcham)[10] go east and west of the high street respectively straight after crossing the River Thames.

History

The number 414 had previously been used for a major trunk route running between West Croydon bus station and Horsham railway station via South Croydon, Purley, Coulsdon, Hooley, Merstham, Redhill, Reigate, Buckland, Betchworth, Dorking, North Holmwood, South Holmwood, Capel, Kingsfold and Warnham.[11] In addition, Arriva Southern Counties operates a 414 route from Dartford to Horton Kirby via South Darenth. [12]

Route 414 commenced operation on 25 November 2002 as an extension of route 14, designed to augment it south of Hyde Park Corner.[13] As a member of TfL staff put it, "When we introduce a new route - or make alterations to an existing route by splitting it - the last digit(s) of the historic 'parent' route are used wherever possible, so that passengers might associate the incoming route with its predecessor.[13] The number 414 was used because 114, 214 and 314 were in use and linked Mill Hill Broadway railway station with Ruislip tube station,[14] Moorgate with Highgate[15] and Eltham railway station with New Addington.[16]

Routing

The 414 originally linked Maida Vale and Fulham High Street. On 14 June 2003, the route was extended south to Putney Bridge tube station. On 29 January 2005, the route was rerouted at Clifton Gardens, Edgware Road to Maida Hill.

Operating

The route was operated by the now defunct First London from their Westbourne Park (X) garage.[4] On 21 November 2009, Abellio London commenced operating route 414, who now operate it out of their Battersea (QB) Garage.[3]

Criticism

The 414 has been called Abellio's most unpunctual bus, with an average of 1:29.4 minutes of excess waiting time. An Abellio employee has responded by saying "it’s quite simply where they traverse. Unfortunately, those routes go through some very popular areas, and what’s going on in those areas can have a dire impact on the service. The 414 goes through Fulham Road and Hammersmith, and for the last six months there’s always been roadworks on Fulham Road — that doesn't help service. You also have when Chelsea play at home and the impact it has when thousands of people come to view that — your buses just aren't going to be on time".[17]

Current route

Route 414 runs between Maida Hill and Putney Bridge.[5]
