Revision as of 20:07, 12 October 2016

Various notable newspapers have made endorsements of candidates in the 2016 United States presidential election, as follows. (The tables below also indicate which candidate each publication endorsed in the United States presidential election, 2012, where known.)

This table includes only endorsements for the general election. Primary endorsements are separately listed at newspaper endorsements in the United States presidential primaries, 2016.

As of October 12, 37 of the nation's 100 largest newspapers by paid circulation have made endorsements. Of these, 32 have endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, three endorsed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, one gave no endorsement, and USA Today, "in a break with more than three decades of precedent, weighed in specifically against [Donald] Trump."[1] Republican candidate Donald Trump has received no endorsements from daily newspapers thus far;[2] such a shunning of a major-party candidate is unprecedented in American history.[3][4]

Clinton won support from not only traditionally Democratic-leaning newspapers, but also traditionally conservative newspapers,[2][5] including those which had "either never before supported a Democrat or had not in many decades ... or had never endorsed any presidential candidate, like USA Today."[5] Media journalist Jim Rutenberg writes that endorsements in the 2016 presidential election are distinguished by "blunt condemnation" of Republican nominee Donald Trump and by a "save the Republic" tone.[5] The endorsements by a handful of newspapers of a third party candidate, Libertarian nominee Johnson, broke from the usual practice of newspaper editorial boards endorsing a candidate from one of the two major parties.[2][6]
