    Wikipedia deleted my fathers page

James Hugo Sporleder was removed by WIKIPEDIA representatives claiming he was not published.

I have St. Louis Post Dispatch published article introducing James Hugo Sporleder,

USA Senate Committee published quotes by James H Sporleder.

Where and why was it removed? Jeffry Sporleder (talk) 03:16, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeffry Sporleder: James Hugo Sporleder was deleted in 2021 after discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James Hugo Sporleder. It was created in 2016 by Wendy.sporleder. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:13, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody is suggesting that he wasn't published. The question is "Was there enough independently published material about him to base an article on?" The consensus in 2021 was that there wasn't. If you can point to sufficient sources to establish notability, then an article about him might be possible (but the deleted article would probably not be much use for the purpose, because it was evidently not based on suitable sources). Remember that nothing written, published, or commissioned by him, his family, his associates, or his employers would contribute to notability. ColinFine (talk) 15:45, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If a draft is similar to an existing article

What should I do if I find a draft that covers the same topic as an existing article but the spelling is slightly different. Specifically, Draft:Kluay Buat Chi versus Kluai buat chi. Aithus (talk) 05:38, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aithus. A draft about a topic that is already the subject of a Wikipedia article should be declined on that basis alone. Any new policy-compliant content in the draft should be merged into the existing article. Cullen328 (talk) 07:42, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aithus: You can use {{AfC comment}} to say an article already exists.[1] If the spelling is a plausible search term then create a redirect. "Kluay Buat Chi" gives many Google hits including the capitals. I have redirected Kluay Buat Chi to Kluai buat chi. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:08, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Nationality

My reading of MOS Biography is that it is correct to describe Vitalik Buterin as Russian-Canadian as he was born in Russia and NOT to describe Dominik Mysterio as Mexican-American as he was born in the US.

Can you confirm - or if not put me right please.

    Many thanks. Lukewarmbeer (talk) 08:20, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The answer to questions like this is always "how do the sources describe him?" not "Where was he born?" ColinFine (talk) 15:49, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Positions are not in clockwise order

Good morning, on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta, the positions within the first caption are not in clockwise order. JackkBrown (talk) 13:18, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @JackkBrown: Yes they are. Clockwise means . PrimeHunter (talk) 13:46, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The best place to raise such issues is on the article's talk page. ColinFine (talk) 15:52, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    I think this is plagiarism.

I was given a newbie task to add citations to the Battle of Chiset article. I found a source here (https://dbpedia.org/page/Battle_of_Chiset). Then I realized that the article was just copied and pasted from this site and copied to wikipedia. I'm new, but I don't think this is in acordence with the rules. If this is against the rules, where do I report it? Blitzfan51 (talk) 15:14, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Blitzfan51 If you scroll to the bottom of the page at dbpedia, you will see a disclaimer that it is a Wikipedia mirror, in other words, they copied from us. Definitely don't use that as a source in our article, as it would be a circular reference. When I'm looking for sources for older articles, I tend to check the history to see when the oldest version of our article was created, then I limit my searching to sources that pre-date our article. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:20, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, it seems that this mirror is license-compliant (it says that the text comes from Wikipedia and under which license).
If it had not been, see Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks#Non-compliance_process for what you can do (but realistically speaking, the answer is nothing). TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 15:23, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! OK thank you for the help. I'm gonna run back to that article and uncite that cite and try to find different sources. Blitzfan51 (talk) 15:24, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Blitzfan51: I added some "find sources" links at the top of the Talk page (that's at Talk:Battle of Chiset) which may halp you find more sources. Most of them turned up empty, but this Qwant link returns several sources (in French) that may help you. Good luck! Mathglot (talk) 09:26, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Potential biog AfD

I just stumbled onto this biog Nicolas Sarkis which has many dead or deprecated citations. I think that notability is not met although he is author of a book. Would someone care to have a glance (it's short) and advise whether an AfD is appropriate here? Thanks. Thelisteninghand (talk) 16:01, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dead links aren't great, but the fact that links went dead should not effect the notability of the subject. Nearly everything on the internet is archived somewhere.Help:Using the Wayback Machine has more information on how to find archived articles. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:19, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - links and notability are two separate issues really. I can't see what makes the subject notable. The article appears to advertise his book and not much more. Cites to a PDF and publisher's website are not good sources I would suggest. I'll await further comments before AfD. Cheers. Thelisteninghand (talk) 21:00, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Vandalism help request from Anubhavklal

I have noticed some vandalism at Indian National Congress. Namely, details of the founders are deleted everytime without justification. I have also posted this on Talk page. Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you, Anubhavklal (talk) 18:02, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This looks to me like an inaccurate description of what is going on there. However, you've done the right thing by opening a talk page discussion on the subject, that is for sure how we resolve content disputes here. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:16, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Anuabhavklal, you are having a content dispute with Vanamonde93: that is how Wikipedia works. You have taken the correct step by discussing it on the talk page (after having previously taken a very very incorrect step of edit warring). If you cannot resolve your dispute in that way, dispute resolution will tell you how to proceed.
Please note that describing an edit that you disagree with as vandalism is disruptive. ColinFine (talk) 18:17, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Franklin D. Roosevelt Harvard Graduating Year

He graduated in 1904 not 1903. The Harvard Crimson Yearbook lists his Senior Photo in 1904. 2600:8801:2F00:9D:9493:8685:78F:5F59 (talk) 20:29, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I graduated in a different year than my last college yearbook is. Perhaps it's the same for FDR. What matters is what independent reliable sources say. Please direct inquires about the FDR article to its talk page, Talk:Franklin D. Roosevelt. 331dot (talk) 20:36, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
He graduated in three years, so 1903, according to the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, but he did stay a fourth year, taking some graduate courses, which may sorta explain why he is included in the class of 1904. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:51, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Best wikiproject for Lockdown Files

Hey, was interested in some advice on editing this page as announcements continue. Is there a good wikiproject for this sort of page. I normally hang out on WP:MED and WP:LAW but this is a little more current affairs than medicine. Talpedia (talk) 22:03, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is there an IPA pronunciation validator?

I occasionally encounter articles whose subjects are words that are confusing for Anglophones to pronounce (such as Guerciotti). I was thinking about adding IPA pronunciation guides for some of these words that I happen to be certain of the correct pronunciations for. It occurs to me that an IPA validator which one could input IPA symbols into, to be able to listen to ensure that those symbols are correct for the word, would be a very useful tool. I have not been able to find any such validator. Can anyone point me in the direction of such a thing (if it exists) or otherwise provide guidance for how I can ensure that the IPA symbols I use sound accurate? Thank you. Bricology (talk) 22:32, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bricology: If you use Template:IPAc-en to add the IPA pronunciations, each phoneme will display, when hovered over, an English word containing that phoneme (example: /ɡwɛərˈɔːt/}. This works for displaying an Anglicized pronunciation, and you can preview your edit to make sure that the tooltips are showing what you intend. Displaying the authentic Italian pronunciation is a bit more complicated. Deor (talk) 23:01, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That's very useful information. Bricology (talk) 00:16, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bricology: Try a google search for IPA readers. You get lost of results. I just did this and then tried one online one [2]. It worked well on two samples. I have no way to evaluate if it is better or worse than others. -Arch dude (talk) 23:18, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That the search parameters I used didn't produce the magic results, so I appreciate that link. Cheers! Bricology (talk) 00:15, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion

I created an article in my sandbox on the BLP Sue Galloway. In the few days that it took me to do so, another editor created the same article. I accidentally moved it to the wrong place: Wikipedia:Sue_Galloway Can someone speedy delete it? Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 22:49, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@maineartists: you have already placed the g7 tag. an admin will delete it soon enough. lettherebedarklight晚安 00:38, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@lettherebedarklight No I didn't. And now my Sandbox is completely gone: [3]. Editor @Liz placed the g7 and deleted my sandbox page in the process. How do I restore it? I would like to retrieve the content to contribute to the created BLP article. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 11:44, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maineartists: You're going to want to go to WP:REFUND for more details, and as far as I can tell, after you moved the content from your sandbox it left a redirect, so that got deleted per G8 once the page in the Wikipedia: namespace was. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:54, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    deleted page

I am new to Wikipedia. I started drafting a page on Sandbox and it has now been deleted because I have apparently contravened copywrite. I had put close to twenty hours in and would like to have the page restored so I can improve it and remove anything including rewriting or removing anything that is copywrite. It worked now, I think I didn't fill in one of the blanks. CARLITOAHUISA (talk) 04:33, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, CARLITOAHUISA. You need to provide some references to reliable, independent sources that devote significant coverage to the airline. Passing mentions are of no value in establishing notability. The references need not be in English. Chinese would be fine. Cullen328 (talk) 07:25, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    1) Is it better to link the search term with a red link to an article that doesn't exist or to link with a blue link to an article that explains some or the basics of the linked word? Red linking would seem to be clearly weaker for readers.

    2) Do red links still lower the quality of the article? Namely, in one vote for a good article, half considered the red links to be a weakness. 2001:2003:F643:6A00:65DD:5020:12A4:9132 (talk) 08:42, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your questions look very reasonable but I don't think that they have very simple answers. Meanwhile: Question 1: you don't mention a third option: not linking anywhere. If you consider this, you have three options. Which of the three I'd take would depend on the particular situation. Question 2: not straightforwardly, no. However, there's no point redlinking to imaginable topics that are unlikely to have viable articles any time soon. I'd not heard of voting for "Good Articles" (or for [lowercase] good articles); which vote was this? -- Hoary (talk) 08:50, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
1a) You are right. There is also option 4: don't write about the topic at all. 1b) You are right. Specific situation: list of features with 8 names, 7 of which are blue and 1 red. 2) That article had no links to fictional objects, it was a high level science article. 3) This was an article in my country, where Wikipedia guidelines prohibit linking to articles in English Wikipedia. 2001:2003:F643:6A00:615E:C764:4827:ABFB (talk) 09:28, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Accidentally linked the wrong article

Hi, I'm a new user of Wikipedia. While I'm enthusiastic, I made a mistake of accidentally linking a page to a disambiguation page when translating. When I tried to revert it by copying back the original content of the disambiguation page, which is short, it couldn't save my revert because it thought I was emptying the page.

Can anyone help with this? I would really appreciate it! Yn1203 (talk) 15:30, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Yn1203. Your contribution history on English Wikipedia shows no edits in article space, so I think you must be talking about something you added to the Indonesian pages. However, editing there should be as here, so you should be able to go to the History tab of the page in question and "undo" the bad edit. Then you can re-add the material with the full correct link. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:37, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi Michael,
    Thanks for your kind reply.
So here's the case because I tried following your assistance yet I'm still confused:
This is a page of the disambiguation page of Mary Morrissey in EN:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey
Instead of adding the translation of the disambiguation page of Mary Morrissey in Indonesian, which was what I intended to do, I added the Indonesian translation of this page: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey
Now, when I tried to revert/edit so that I could de-attach/remove the wrong, full Indonesian Mary Morrissey (American author) page from the disambiguation page, I was held by Wikipedia's bot that said I couldn't do it, because the disambiguation page's translation is much shorter, therefore the bot thinks I'm purposefully ruining the longer translation (which is about Mary Morrissey, American author, that was wrongly linked to the EN disambiguation pge instead of EN Mary Morrisey's American author page).
    Hopefully this is clear. Yn1203 (talk) 15:45, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so looking at your global contributions, I think you're probably talking about this edit and this edit to Wikidata. Am I correct? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:58, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Thanks for taking a look.
I did edit those two Wikidatas, however, the issue is that Mary Morrissey's disambiguation page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey has the wrong ID translation.
Instead of having the disambiguation page in Indonesian, it has the Indonesian translation of this page: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey.

SVG map of US states that is easily updatable

See discussion: Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop#Map of US minimum wage by state. Am I imagining that there are plug-and-play SVG maps that are easily updated by pasting in a text list? I thought they existed. I have done a lot of editing of tables, and see various state and country lists that have data that would be more useful if the numbers were on the map for each state or country. Especially when combined with a color bar legend.

I edit Help:Table and Help:Sortable tables, and so I know how to convert the data from a column to a text list. With the state or country names to the left of the data. So a multi-purpose USA SVG map could be used for many topics: Minimum wages, cumulative Covid death rates, incarceration rates, rate of uninsured, and much more. With the data on the map. Not just a color bar legend, and coloration of states or countries. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:21, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Positions

Good afternoon. I would like to bring to your attention these three pages: Naples, Jakarta, and Pretoria; the positions of the first caption of the "Naples" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naples) page are correct, while the positions of the "Jakarta" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta) and "Pretoria" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretoria) pages, in my opinion, are incorrect (e.g. on the "Pretoria" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretoria) page, "Loftus Versfeld Stadium" should be the second-to-last in clockwise order from top to bottom, while, in the caption, it is not the second-to-last). JackkBrown (talk) 13:36, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I don't agree. Assuming Loftus Versfield Stadium is the rugby field, then that would be the fifth one clockwise from the top, which is where the caption has it. AndyJones (talk) 13:50, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS I don't know much about Naples but it looks to me as if it's Naples that has the order wrong. AndyJones (talk) 13:53, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AndyJones: I had thought of the order differently, and therefore incorrectly; I apologise. In any case, I have fixed the positions of the first caption on the "Naples" page ✅. JackkBrown (talk) 14:25, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to write a new article about my company

How to write on Wikipedia about my company . Mysubtube had achieved its goal and had helped many new comers get a hipe in social media. The agency had become an integral part of the digital marketing world and had become a household name in the industry. Josmy joseph (talk) 16:29, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome. First, you'll need to ensure that the company meets the notability requirements listed here: Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). Secondly, I would suggest reading the following: Wikipedia:Neutral point of view and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure, to ensure you know the rules in those areas. Now, to the meat of your question, you should be able to just type what you want to call the article in the search box and you'll be told that it doesn't exist. You can click on the red link to create the page. Alternatively, you can click on the "create a draft and submit it for review" link in order to create a rough draft of the article. This would buy you more time in fleshing out the page and other people would be able to help you, such as making suggestions, before the article goes live. Useight (talk) 16:38, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Useight Users with a clear conflict of interest should be encouraged to submit drafts via WP:AFC, not to directly create an article(usually such users aren't autoconfirmed anyway). 331dot (talk) 16:42, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    That's a good point. Useight (talk) 17:51, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A quick Google clearly suggests that Mysubtube is unlikely to be a household name anywhere outside its own front door. Not that it matters, since Wikipedia is not an advertising platform, and only has articles on subjects who's notability can be demonstrated through significant coverage in independent reliable sources. Where such sources exist, articles are expected to be encyclopaedic and neutral, and editing by contributors with a conflict of interest is strongly discouraged. Contributors who have a financial stake in a subject are required to make a declaration to that effect. I suggest you concentrate on making your company live up to your hype - if and when it ever does, no doubt someone will consider it worthy of an article. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:39, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Josmy joseph The short answer is that you don't. Wikipedia articles are typically written by independent editors wholly unconnected with the topic, who take note of coverage of a topic in independent reliable sources and choose to write about it. Please read conflict of interest and paid editing. 331dot (talk) 16:40, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@PhoenixBrmnzo I moved it for you; it had been in the parent category about the war, not the one you suggested about battles of the war. To add or remove an article to or from a category, you have to edit the article you want to add or remove--not the category page. Go to that page and go into the edit part; at the bottom, you'll find the categories in double square brackets. Use those as a pattern. Uporządnicki (talk) 17:03, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Need an Article on Versaladder

Versaladder is/was a company that made various types of ladders - folding, etc. They may possibly be out of business now but if they are it would be good to know what company, if any, took over their operation.

You may be right that they are out of business; I am not sure. However, if anyone is interested in writing an article about them this article in the July 1998 issue of Popular Mechanics would be a good source, as would this from Christian Science Monitor in 1986.
Versa Products, Inc. (the manufacturer of the Versa ladder) was still in businesses as recently as 2004 when they were the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit reached a decision in Crump v. Versa Products, Inc..
It looks like their trademark on the name expired in 2006.
    That's what I've been able to find so far. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:46, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@N4hmrham: Wikipedia notability is not temporary; in other words, if you establish that this company meets WP:NCORP, then it matters not that it no longer exists. Non-existing might make it a bit harder to find the required significant coverage typically needed to establish the Wikipedia notability of a company, but reliable sources don't need to be available online or be recent for them to be considered reilable. You can try to create such an article yourself if you want; however, I suggest that you first create a draft. Once you feel you've clearly shown that the company is Wikipedia notable, you can submit the draft to WP:AFC for review. For some general information on creating Wikipedia articles, please take a look at WP:YFA, WP:REFB, WP:42, WP:NOT and WP:BACKWARD. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:14, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Accessible way for newbies to follow diffs

Is there an accessible way for newcomers (i.e., students) to follow the diffs that happen on their contribution without having to leave and return to the history page? For myself, I use both Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups, which will show a diff view on hover over "previous", and User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/inlineDiffDocs, which allows the diff to unfold beneath the history items.

I might be able to ask the students to do the first, but the popups can be a little touchy and distracting. Newbies won't be able to reliably to install script.

Are there other alternatives? Reagle (talk) 19:23, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Comma or not?

Good evening. I would like to ask: when specifying the country, for example: "... Lax K'abit in northwestern British Columbia, Canada", should the comma be added after the name of the nation, or not? I will pass you a sentence: "The Nisga'a villages of Lax Ksiluux and Wii Lax K'abit in northwestern British Columbia, Canada were destroyed by thick lava flows during the eruption of Tseax Cone in the 1700s."; in this sentence, in "British Columbia, Canada", should the comma be added after "Canada", or not? JackkBrown (talk) 22:21, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: Welcome, and yes a comma does follow Canada in your example. See MOS:COMMA for more info. RudolfRed (talk) 22:26, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: thanks for your help, I finished fixing the Lava page by correcting these errors. JackkBrown (talk) 22:35, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You could also omit the ", Canada,". A reader who does not know where British Columbia is (or which British Columbia is meant) can click on the British Columbia wikilink to find out. Maproom (talk) 22:49, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do you interpret MOS guideline on first sentence of lists?

Hello, and hope you're well. MOS:FIRST says: Similarly, if the page is a list, do not introduce the list as 'This is a list of X' or 'This list of Xs...'. A clearer and more informative introduction to the list is better than verbatim repetition of the title. I see many lists that do not do this, and I'm starting to see a pattern where I change the first sentence per MOS:FIRST and am reverted. So, I was wondering if there's a nuance to interpreting this that I'm missing. How do you determine how to implement this part of MOS:FIRST? Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 23:37, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rotideypoc41352, I'd take it to mean what it says. Could you name a couple of these list articles? Then somebody (perhaps me) will take a look, and comment on the specifics. -- Hoary (talk) 00:15, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most of these are pretty old—I just pulled up a list of my edit summaries containing "first" and went through them. Way back in 2020, I started a talk page discussion at Talk:List of ancient Greek and Roman roofs#MOS:FIRSTSENTENCE—my diff is linked there. That discussion discouraged me for a while (despite success at List of Roman basilicas). I then returned after...well, concluding what you did: that the policy seemed pretty straightforward. Sometimes the constructions were reverted for being too awkward, as at List of ethnic slurs. Others had theirs redone for reasons unrelated to MOS:FIRST, like List of women aviators. List of active Indian military aircraft seems to have fallen victim to persistent vandalism-fighting—the hatnote got chewed up and spat out, resulting in the nonsensical second sentence. But going back to the awkward prose issue: I thought I did an okay job at List of Republicans who opposed the Donald Trump 2020 presidential campaign and less stellar ones at List of owners of English football clubs and List of Malayalam films of 2022—all three of them now have the "list of" construction on the first sentence all the same. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 03:53, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I chose List of Republicans who opposed the Donald Trump 2020 presidential campaign. This had started This is a list of Republicans and conservatives who declined to endorse blah blah. You changed this to Republicans and conservatives have declined to endorse blah blah. (As this was in August 2020, the choice of tense was appropriate.) ¶ You're invoking a valid interpretation of a sentence whose subject is an indefinite plural noun phrase -- however, though valid, it's less likely. I suspect that a typical reaction would have been "No they haven't! Only some outliers: Susan Collins, George Conway, and uh...." ¶ I'd have written A number of Republicans and conservatives have declined to endorse blah blah. ¶ Lima Bean Farmer reverted the change, with the edit summary Same as the article from 2016 about Republicans who oppose Trump, to which my reaction is "Consistency is a good thing, but only when it's consistency in being good". -- Hoary (talk) 04:37, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your time and feedback! Good to know that if there are any issues, it's my wording, and that I understand MOS:FIRST correctly. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 21:38, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I remove a file from Wikipedia?

This image has been succeeded by this image as the previous one was uploaded by another user without the correct licence descriptions. How can I remove the previous image (which may violate fair use)? _MB190417_ (talk) 02:02, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MB190417: The image is on commons so it will need to be deleted there. It looks like it is already tagged for having a licence problem. RudolfRed (talk) 02:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MB190417: Although "remove" and "delete" are often used interchangeably by users, they are technically two different things. If all you want to do is remove the file from the article and replace it with another file, then just go to article, click "Edit" (either for the entire article or the relevant section) and replace the syntax the first file with the syntax of the second file. For more information on this, see Help:Files. If, on the other hand, you want the file to be deleted, then you can't do this yourself, You will need to request that the file be deleted by an administrator. Since File:Rosa Smester.png was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, you will need to make such a request on Commons per c:COM:DELETE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:00, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a guideline on when to use secondary versus tertiary sources?

Is there any established rule for situations where using a tertiary source is inadvisable or if it's possible for too many of an article's sources to be tertiary? I'm asking here because I can't find any official guidance elsewhere, and advice I've seen appears to be contradictory. Some editors seem to consider tertiary sources equal to secondary sources, while others seem to consider them a last resort. This is an issue I've seen come up both writing content myself and reviewing the content of others. WP:PST talks about the difference between secondary and tertiary sources, but not when you should use one or the other. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 05:00, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Thebiguglyalien the question of weight applies for both of them. A controversial/bold claim in a secondary source with no attributable author beyond the reputation/name of the publication will hold less weight than a subject expert in a peer reviewed journal. For something like quoting the birth year of a dead person, a Brittanica Encyclopedia or generic Associated Press news blurb would suffice, but for a contentious claim on say Holocausts and Polish nationalism, it wouldn’t muster.
Certain tertiary sources like Wikipedia cannot be used because they’re self referential and also not “reliable” in that they regularly change. But that wasn’t directly what you were asking. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 07:02, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Thebiguglyalien. Are tertiary sources equal to secondary sources or should they be considered a last resort? You have staked out two extreme polar positions when the truth is somewhere in the middle. Secondary sources are always preferred, but tertiary sources are permitted when used cautiously and carefully. Consider a Wikipedia biography of a famous musician with a 50 year old career. A newspaper article briefly discussing one of their earliest public performances is a primary source of little value as a reference in a biography of that musician. A book length biography of that musician published decades into their career and written by a respected music critic and published by a respectable house would be a secondary source of the highest quality. A three or four paragraph description of that musician in an encyclopedia of contemporary music would be a tertiary source. It might have limited value in the Wikipedia biography, but well-reviewed book length biographies issued by respected publishing houses or university presses are far superior. It is not an "all or nothing" proposition. Sometimes tertiary sources (and primary sources) are OK until higher quality secondary sources can be found and analyzed. It takes more time and money, after all, to read and understand a book than a newspaper clipping. As editors, we should always be striving to improve the quality of article references, and how accurately we summarize them. Cullen328 (talk) 07:34, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And in some cases high-quality tertiary sources are as valuable or more valuable than even secondary sources. If you want to summarise the academic consensus on some contentious issue, for instance, an academically minded specialist tertiary source (e.g. the Oxford Classical Dictionary or Brill's New Pauly in the field of classics) may well be more useful than the latest scholarly literature which can be more concerned with staking out a particular position than summarising the state of the field. Question for a page I've been editing since last year.

The page I've been working on Draft:Veiled Experts

So, when I started editing this page last year, I had no idea on what to do since it was my first edit, and had to take time off to learn more about editing Wikipedia pages. (Plus there were no notable sources of information that I could find for the subject I was writing a page about).

However, with the recent updates in sources for the subject, I've started my work on the page once again and I would like to ask for some advice from other more experienced editors on Wikipedia.

If anyone could provide some additional feedback on how to make it a better page, please help a fellow newbie editor out! Hyccc20 (talk) 08:46, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Nicknames

Good morning, I had already asked this question, but I had formulated it wrongly: should nicknames be written in italics or in quotation marks (or both)? For example, here:

"... The attacking trio of Sívori, Maschio, and Angelillo were nicknamed the "caras sucias" ...",

or "... The attacking trio of Sívori, Maschio, and Angelillo were nicknamed the caras sucias ...",

or "... The attacking trio of Sívori, Maschio, and Angelillo were nicknamed the "caras sucias"..."? JackkBrown (talk) 11:21, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is that called a nickname? I understand nickname as an alternative name for something which already has a more official name but these people together (three of a large football team) don't have an existing name as a group. I would just treat it per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Foreign terms with {{lang}} and a translation: The attacking trio of Sívori, Maschio, and Angelillo were called the caras sucias, meaning the dirty faces. It's one of those little slips that is very easy to make and very hard to spot! DuncanHill (talk) 14:42, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Evansknight: I think this sort fo thing happens to most editors. A good general approach when this happens is to do a diff between the old working version and the new broken version. When working in a sandbox, save frequently so each diff is relatively small. You are of course welcome to come here for help, but sometimes all of us are asleep and the answer will be delayed, so self-help is quicker. -Arch dude (talk) 18:32, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Evansknight If you use the source editor you can toggle the syntax highlighter (the pen icon just to the left of the word "advanced" at the top of the edit window), which has the effect of colouring in the text and references in such a way that these sorts of errors become very obvious. View counts per individual edit?

Hi, I've recently started editing as a volunteer, on behalf of a large academic body. We were wondering if there's something buried in page tools which allows users to see how many people have viewed an individual edit/addition to a page. This is of interest in terms of trying to gauge how useful our project is, going forward. I did look at general Pageview stats, but could not find the info I was looking for. Also had a look at the WikiProject edit counters page, and there were a couple of links which allowed greater analysis, but not in the specific area of interest here. Any input or suggestions would be very much appreciated! UtopiaCaled0nia (talk) 16:01, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@UtopiaCaled0nia, I can't think of any, but you can try asking at WP:TECHPUMP. If I see an edit on my watchlist I want to check, I may use the "diff" link there (or in the user history), or the "prev" link in the article history. It seems what you want would require collecting "views" from links like these. Also, sometimes an editor tell other editors "Hey, look at this diff [4], it's very odd!" And of course, such view-collecting will exclude those who see the addition by just looking at the article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:35, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The one currently there was uploaded to commons in 2011, but is currently tagged for speedy deletion there as a copyvio (It seems you are the one who tagged it). The source of the image is unclear, but it does look like someone scanned an actual card they bought, which would indeed be a copyvio. The other one seems to be newer and uses images that are freely licensed, however the text and central concept of both are the same. @User1042: Copyright lies in the "creative elements" of a work, including "selection and arrangement" in addition to actual words and pictures. In my opinion the words are too close a paraphrase of the original and therefore infringe the copyright. Also in my opinion the "selection and arrangement" (i.e., the layout) also infringes. (I do like your new card, but I don't think we should use it.) But you are assuming the 2011 version is not in fact properly licensed. If it is then it's OK to create a derivative work as long as you attribute the original. -Arch dude (talk) 18:58, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Language

    I can’t set Greek language Ells123go (talk) 17:53, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ells123go. If you mean, How can you get to the Greek Wikipedia (with articles in the Greek language), you can find it at el:. If you mean, How can you use the English Wikipedia but with your user interface in Greek, you can set that in your user preferences (Special:Preferences). If you mean something else, you'll have to explain further. ColinFine (talk) 21:45, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Julian Assange update?

Would someone please update the first section about "Julian Assange" to bring the reader up to date on what has happened to his appeal since July 2022 and what his status is today? The article is lengthy with many twists and turns, and I cannot find anything that brings me up to date. Thank you!! 2600:1700:95B0:B620:807D:5264:1468:431E (talk) 18:10, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You need to post this request at Talk:Julian Assange, rather than here. The lede does look a little out of date, certainly. AndyTheGrump (talk) 18:14, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Creative Commons license

Hi! Can I upload some screenshots of these videos on Wiki Commons? [5] [6] [7] MJXVI (talk) 18:36, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to me as if the first one, anyway, has a suitable licence (see commons:commons:YouTube files). I haven't looked at the others. ColinFine (talk) 21:50, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Question

Good evening. In the following sentences, according to the rules of the style manual, should italics be added instead of quotation marks? "... with some parts of the media dubbing him "the Maradona of the Sixties"."; and "... In his final years he was often referred to as "l'Ingegnere" (the Engineer) or "il Grande Vecchio" (the Great Old Man)." JackkBrown (talk) 22:23, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO, quotation marks should be used, not italics. And it should be '"il Grande Vecchio" (the Grand Old Man)'. Maproom (talk) 10:25, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    i wanna make 'switch' template

    hi~~

i am in action on the Unamwiki site. i cannot use '#switch' there. It is only using the 'if' template.(old version system problem)

    {{if|{{{1|}}}|{{{2|}}}|{{{3|}}} }}

but i make a 'switch' template. link

In 'switch', several conditions can be simply implemented. But please help me implement it more simply in the 'switch' template...

    • Original 'switch'
    {{#switch :Japan |Korea |Japan |China = Asia |Greece |France = Europe |default = }}

    • current 'switch' template. If 1 Numeric Variables is 'Japan', then output2 displays in the case2.
    {{if |{{{ {{{case2|}}}=@ }}} |{{{ {{{case2|}}} }}} |}}

    Fot more infom. Press links.

    {{switch {{{1|Japan}}}
    |case1=Korea |case2=Japan |case3=China

    |output1=Asia |output2=Asia |output3=Asia

    |case4=Greece |case5=France
    |output4=Europe |output5=Europe
    |default = }}

    • but it makes many codes. So i wanna make 'switch' template like this.
    {{switch {{{1|Japan}}}
    |Korea |Japan |China = Asia
    |Greece |France = Europe
    |default = }}

But Korea, Japan is Numeric Variables. And China isn't Numeric Variables.

Is it possible to modify it?

    Please ..Thanks a lot. 222.117.225.233 (talk) 03:02, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is the help desk for Wikipedia, and has nothing to do with any other Wiki, even if it does happen to use the Mediawiki software. If you want help on using parser functions in that software, please look at mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions ColinFine (talk) 10:59, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Need help closing RfC and inviting reviewers

I'm a participant in a RfC filed by Freoh in early February. Voting and discussion have fairly well run their course. A bot removed the RfC template a couple days ago (March 9). What do we need to do to: 1) close the RfC to prevent further comments/voting and 2) invite editors to review the RfC and offer feedback on voting and the issues raised? The RfC in question is on the Talk:Constitution of the United States page. Thank you. Allreet (talk) 03:28, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Have you tried listing the discussion at Wikipedia:Closure requests? Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 06:40, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, but I'll check it out and let you know. Thanks Allreet (talk) 08:00, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I entered a request, fingers crossed that I did it properly. Again, thanks. Allreet (talk) 09:15, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Swaathi MC: Looking at your contributions it seems you've figured out where it is, but note that your page has been proposed for speedy deletion for blatant advertising. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:26, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
