Label for "British English" articles?

I think I've seen such a thing. I'm editing 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement, and would like to flag the page to request that we stick to British English, which I claim is currently prevalent. Actually, sorry, the article already has a notice on the talk page, saying This article uses Indian English dialect and spelling - and shouldn't be changed without discussion/consensus.

Better than ref label note label?

I'm working on a page with 22 different ref labels note labels and they are out of sync. I saw on a page (and now can't find) a way to do ref labels/note labels that output similar to the ref label note label, but you could assign a name to them so even if things moved around on the page, the letters would be assigned in order. Can you give a little bit more information? What page has the 22 different labels? If you would like to put notes into your article, you can use {{#tag:ref|TEXT GOES HERE|group="note"}} another simple way is to use <ref group=note>TEXT GOES HERE</ref> If you use the second method, you cannot give a citation to your note. List of fraternities and sororities in the Philippines. The notes include the information as to whether there is any relationship with an identically named organization elsewhere. Which of these methods will *automatically* assign the letters (or numbers) for the notes, so that if the notes up in the main text are switched in locations that the numbers/letters pertaining to them would be switched and reordered down in the note section?Naraht (talk) 19:20, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

FIFA Soccer 12 Cache

If a user is (and has not been) logged in, the page FIFA Soccer 12 shows the page FIFA 12 but only as it appeared yesterday, which has some incorrect information, like the infobox release date as August 27th instead of September 27th. See screenshot from moments ago. To be clear, this was taken from a browser I almost never use, so it was not some stored cache on my computer. I assume this is due to some delay in server-side caching, but usually Wikipedia is very good at always showing the most up-to-date page. This is a difficult problem to reproduce, but I wanted to know if anything can be done about it. Thanks. Allstar86 (talk) 01:50, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Incorrect photo caption

I don't know how to edit a photo caption within a Wiki article.

The photo appears twice

The caption is incorrect. No Russians are shown in the photo. The man wrongly identified as a Russian is in fact from an Australian colonial force sent to assist the 'Mother Country' (Britain). I have the same photo in a text book on this contribution - Bluejackets and Boxers by Bob Nicholls where it is correctly labelled.

Adding content on Transport related issues to Wikipedia

Dear Madam/Sir

We would like to add some content to your website which we believes adds to, and enhances the knowledge already posted on Wikipedia. . Our core business is education about transport related subjects, but in addition to teaching, our aim is to make it easier for transport planners, academics, social workers and other members of the public to have easy access to quality peer reviewed research papers and reports that help them with their jobs. It is not our aim to promote any one academic Journal or Transportation Institute, but rather the advancement of academic knowledge on Transport, Public Transit or other.

To this end, I seek your advice on how we ago about adding either a link or well thought-out knowledge to your site. I have been looking at your site and External Links and References appear to be suitable.

As an example, I have chosen tram as a subject heading. I have a link that will take you to 358 peer reviewed academic journal articles from Journals, The Transportation Research Board and Transportation Institutes around the world. Every single article that appears on our website has been approved by the Journal or institute in question. How do we go about getting permission to add this to Wikipedia. I am aware we can add information, but I thought I would try writing to you first to ask your permission rather than find a link we placed on your site later redacted.

If you require any further information, or if you have any queries for me, I would be only too happy to try and resolve any issues you might have?

The best way to handle this is to ask at the talk page of the articles you wish to add the links to. To do this, click the "discussion" tab when viewing any article, and there you can post your link and seek opinions about their relevence and complaince with Wikipedia's policies on external links (see Wikipedia:External links). It may take a few days to generate some robust discussion, but that is the best way to judge the appropriateness. Alternately, you can ask for input here at the Help Desk, say "I want to add the link XXXX to article YYYY. Is it appropriate to do so?" This page gets a LOT of activity, so people will give you a good response fairly quickly. --Jayron32 03:34, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

I see from your post at Talk:Tram that you are interested in adding external links on the general subject of transportation to articles such as Tram. I'm sorry but Wikipedia is not a repository of links. External links are welcome only if the linked page is closely related to the subject of the article. line wrap in template

I'm editing a navbox template: Template:AMC Shows (specific version in case later edits change the situation). Wikipedia is not public domain, actually. It's content is under what is known as a "free content license", which is not the same thing as public domain. Wikipedia's content is dual licensed under both GFDL and CC-BY-SA. As far as money, Wikipedia does fine. The parent organization, known as Wikimedia Foundation, makes enough money via its annual fundraising drive that there isn't any real need to ask for government handouts or other sources of cash. Wikimedia works very much like Public Broadcasting in the U.S. in terms of how it is funded. --Jayron32 04:27, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Dear friends, during last weeks I was involved mainly in adding the German version of this template de:template:Normdaten to dozens of pages; adding the required parameters where required. Today, I activated the linking to WorldCat identities containing the works from / about authors. I never have seen trailing zeros as template parameters to the third part of parameter LCCN.
example: Abraham Lincoln#normdaten contains now the link http://www.worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n79-6779 Lincoln, Abraham 1809-1865
Works: 22,532 works in 36,882 publications in 66 languages and 1,323,107 library holdings
This information is very important for readers. They will find books in smaller languages.
The template did not work from the beginning. It was necessary to remove the leading zeros before the third subpart of parameter LCCN:
{{Normdaten|LCCN=n/79/006779}} changed to {{Normdaten|LCCN=n/79/6779}})

Is User:Talktalk a misleading username?

On a certain Wikipedia, an administrator thought User:Talktalk is a misleading username which is not allowed by Wikipedia:Username policy and blocked the user forever. The reason is the administrator personally thought User:Talktalk looks like a user's talk page. Do you think the username is misleading? • Unless that certain Wikipedia is the English one, I don't see the problem. Other language Wikipedias use different words to indicate talk pages -- which would cause the confusion to disappear. In order to have a topic included in Wikipedia, you have to establish its notability (see Wikipedia:Notability for more information). Briefly this means you have to show that sources independent of the subject (in this case Barnicklemusic) have written or reported about Barnicklemusic. A Problem finding an article that has been posted

When I search google, I can find this Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Josee_Nadeau

But If I try to search for "Josee Nadeau" through Wikipedia it reports no such page exists.

What is the problem here?

Note also that Wikipedia has a guideline against user pages that look like articles, see WP:FAKEARTICLE. Is this a draft that you want to become an article? Orthomolecular Medicine

Dear Sirs

I gave my feed back at foot of page on Orthomolecular Medicine. I then got an email asking me to click on a link to verify my email address. It would not respond. I copied and pasted it into my address bar and lo and behold, up came YOUR EMAIL IS NOT VERIFIED. What kind of nonsense is this? Clearly someone is hijacking anything to do with nutrition because it is viewed as a threat to drug company profits. Can you explain?

I don't think your first action (editing the page) had anything to do with the second (getting the email). Wikipedia does not email people who edit articles. I do not see where anyone has edited Orthomolecular medicine or its discussion page from your IP, or anything close to your IP. Perhaps you could be a little more specific with the contents of the email you received and from whom it was received? TNXMan 16:19, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Problems with two references in article

As I see it there should be no problem with reference number 28. Neither of them are a problem. The tool indicates "things to check" - it doesn't necessarily mean anything wrong. In the case of 28, the tool has no way to know that the URL used is a perma-link. The warning of an error in ref 108 just indicates that that specific NY Times page has some invalid code - but that isn't our problem.  Chzz  ►  16:30, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

I think that must be considered to be not important details. But thank you for notifying me about it. If I fell for it, I will maybe change it sometimes in the future, but it will take a very long time to do so, because the article is very long and has many references.

Some of the references use the {{cite book}} template, others use {{harvnb}}, and others just have bare information between the <ref> and </ref>; it's better to use a consistent style throughout (and becomes very important when heading towards GA-status). Additionally, some refs do not give enough information to allow the reader to locate them, such as 116. ^ a b c Piano Buyer's Guide, p. 13. - which could refer to a number of different publications; ISBN/publisher/author would help.  Chzz  ►  20:35, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

– The {{harvnb}} template are used when a reference is listed in the section "Further reading". For example: When clicking on reference number 18 you are directed to "Giordano, Sr. 2010, p. 137." and when clicking on "Giordano, Sr. 2010" you are directed to the book in the section "Further reading" and here the book is listed: "Giordano, Sr., Nicholas J. (2010). Physics of the Piano. Oxford, United Kingdom: Oxford University Press. ISBN 978-0-19-954602-2.". That is the correct way to write the reference, right?

OBS: The {{harvnb}} template are not used with reference number 1. Because when using the {{harvnb}} template in the infobox, the {{harvnb}} template does not work.

There is no right/wrong way. Like many style-issues, the formatting of references isn't dictated (even for an FA) - the editors (for a specific article) can choose to do things whichever way they want; the only concern for GA/FA is, that the formatting is consistent. At e.g. "FA review", the reviewers don't *care* which templates are used (if any) - but they do care that, for example, all the dates in refs are the same - e.g. "1 June 2011" or "June 1 2011" or "1-6-11" or whatever - and, that all the refs have the title/date/author/isbn in the same order, same font, same punctuation; sticking to one format helps with that.

Harv can be used in an infobox; if there's a specific problem, there's always an answer.

Personally, I do like harvard-style most of the time - especially if almost all refs are books, and/or lots of refs are re-used. I also (personally) don't bother with "Cite Web", "Cite Book", "Cite Journal" and all those, but instead I just use {{citation}} for all of them - because it makes it easier to be consistent. But others really don't like harv, because it does make the rendered page code longer (slower to load) - and/or, prefer using specific cite templates because they sometimes allow for more specific parameters.

Sorry I cannot give a clear "do it THIS way" answer; but it's a matter of personal preference. As long as the resultant output is consistent, and serves the purpose of refs, that's fine.

See Wikipedia:Citing sources - Each article should use the same citation method throughout. If an article already has citations, adopt the method in use or seek consensus on the talk page before changing it. While you should try to write citations correctly, what matters most is that you provide enough information to identify the source. - and note that that guide does not even mention specific templates; that's left to the editors of an article to decide.  Chzz  ►  17:30, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

The article uses shortened footnotes, a method that uses {{harv}} series template for the in-text cite and {{cite xxx}} template for the full citation. I recommend you enable User:Ucucha/HarvErrors since there are some errors in the article. {{Sfn}} will neatly replace <ref>{{harv|}}</ref> and you need to enable |ref=harv for the {{cite xxx} templates. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) ^talk 03:51, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Would an editor proficient with wikicode amend Template:Rfd2 and Template:Rfd2m? For example, in Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2011 August 12#Gogeta, the template creates the following:

*Gogeta → Son Goku (Dragon Ball)#Abilities and Vegeta#Abilities (links to redirect • history • stats)     [ Closure: keep/delete ]

• Vegito → Son Goku (Dragon Ball)#Abilities and Vegeta#Abilities (links to redirect • history • stats) 

When the closing admin clicks on "keep", the edit summary is "Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion#Gogeta closed as keep". This is not a durable link because the discussion will eventually be archived from Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. Would someone fix the code to say "Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2011 August 12#Gogeta closed as keep"?

Template:Rfd2m, which is for nominating multiple redirects, also needs to be updated. In the above example, only the first redirect, Gogeta, had a [Closure: keep/delete] link. I don't believe this is within the scope of the help desk. Okay, I think I've fixed it. Since the discussions are on the log page, I simply replaced the edit summary text that had [[Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion#section]] with [[{{PAGENAME}}#section]]. As far as I can tell the edit summaries come only from rfd2 and not the Rfd2m associated template. Note that since {{rfd2}} is always substituted, you will only see the fix in action for discussions listed after the fix.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:26, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words, but it appears my solution is only partial. It does no harm but its a won't work sometimes (probably most of the time). Here's why {{PAGENAME}} places the name of the page of wherever it is invoked from. The translation of that is: if an admin is on the log page when they click keep or delete, the good log edit summary link will be placed. However, if an admin clicks on keep or delete while on the RFD transclusion page, the {{PAGENAME}} magic word take the name of that page, i.e., it will place the same non-durable link to RFD#section. Though I've never closed an RFD, I think most admins visit the RFD page and close it from there, and every time that happens the same edit problem will be seen. Thanks again for fixing the link with the includeonly tag. After some thought, it would be quite difficult to use it in {{rfd2m}}. A new parameter for the template would likely be necessary (one for the name of the section header which would differ from the redirect's name). I think it is worthwhile to have these convenience links but don't think it's worthwhile enough to add another parameter to the template. Instead of linking to a particular section, would it be possible to link to only the log page? I am a frequent user and a contributer to Wikipedia's funding appeals.

I have read the rules which say that only 'verifiable' pages and information should be posted, and only information that would have a place in an Encyclopedia should be included.

Could you explain to me when, and in what reality, Sally Bercow would 'deserve' an Encyclopedia entry.

Wikipedia is in the grip of shallow celebrity publicity seeking, it's not an encyclopedia.

I resent this because I wanted to add a viable edit to an existing entry this week concerning something of interest and value, unlike all your Z list celebrity entries, but you took it off.

As for your edit to the article wynd, it and another similar statement were deleted as trivial. Your addition was unsourced. The reflist automatically updates itself whenever you add the <ref> tag to something in the article. If you are using the same reference multiple times you can name the reference by using <ref name="INSERT REF NAME HERE"> reference information</ref> all future usages of that ref would be placed using <ref name="INSERT REF NAME HERE" />. In Dan Branch you have defined <ref name=F> twice. Only the first definition will have effect. Ref names are not displayed in the rendered article and they don't have to be alphabetical like your A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H which is hard to maintain. I recommend a ref name indicating something about the reference like the publication or author. If a reference is only used once then no ref name is required. HАGGER?

Ok, it's not the most important question ever but it seems to me, it could show a bug.
I just went to clean up my Watchlist. Among the articles I deleted from the list there was an "HАGGER?" in red. Possibly some very old work of a vandal. When I check the chenges done, I noticed there were still a few red links, "HАGGER?" included. So I went back to remove them (again or maybe a couple slipped my attention). Now all were gone a part from that "HАGGER?". I tried to delete it few more times. Every time I got a:

"A single title was removed from your watchlist:

HАGGER? (talk)"

But the "HАGGER?" was still showing in the list. So I went to the Edit raw watchlist, found the "HАGGER?", removed, saved, checked.....and the beast was still there! (°_°)
I can live with it, still it's weird and it seems a bug to me. Has anyone got a clue?

That was a redirect created during the process of page-move vandalism. To remove it from your watchlist, use http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=H%D0%90GGER%3F&action=unwatch. Note the HTML encodings of the characters, since the "A" isn't really an "A"; it is a UNICODE look-alike. (I think the uppercase Greek alpha, which looks identical.) Additionally, it is hard to remove from your watchlist because the "?" is an HTML symbol that is interpreted as part of a GET request. Did this work? Click "edit raw watchlist", which brings up a text file of watchlisted pages. You can edit this like any article at Wikipedia, and just remove the text of the articles you want to remove. That should work... --Jayron32 12:31, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

It's a known glitch. This procedure should work: Click "Edit raw watchlist", copy everything except HAGGER? to your own computer, delete everything from the watchlist, save the empty watch list, click "Edit raw watchlist" and copy everyhing back from your computer. University of Liverpool

I'm not getting anywhere with discussing this issue on the University of Liverpool page, but basically there are two things that need updating on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Liverpool

1. The current crest displayed as the main image of the page has been confirmed by the University of Liverpool Press Office that it should no longer be used, and the new logo should be used instead. The new logo was moved down to the box below the website address, when the old crest was then added. This is the communication that I received from the press office: Dear Daniel,

Transclusion problem with footer

Actually it seems that three of the four have been fixed. The lone remaining problem is Template:NFL Roster template list's compatibility with {{NFL roster}}. See for example Template:Philadelphia Eagles roster. In the other four browsers everything looks fine. wikimedia emails without a wikimedia account

I got an email to vote in the Wikimedia image referendum, at the bottom it said "To remove yourself from future notifications, please add your user name at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_nomail_list." So I went to that page, it said I had to log in to edit, and when I tried to log in, I was told "There is no user by the name 'Severinus'". Because apparently I have a Wikipedia account, but not a Wikimedia account. But if I don't have a Wikimedia account and have no way of removing my email from Wikimedia's mailing lists, then Wikimedia should not be sending me emails. This is no different than getting spam with no way to remove myself from the mailing except by creating an account on the spammer's personal website. If I cannot log in to an individual Wikimedia project (e.g. to add myself to its nomail list), then that individual project should not have access to my account information such as email. If possible, an admin should both add my username to the Wikimedia nomail list and submit a bug report for this issue. Quotations section

From WP:LONGQUOTE, a subsection of Wikipedia:Quotations: "Do not insert any number of quotations in a stand-alone quote section." That's all I could find. Like everything else on Wikipedia, we should treat this with common sense. I donl't think a quote section normally belongs, but I can think of special exceptions where it might be appropriate. Redirect question

Hi, I've read up on Wikipedia:Redirect as well as Help:Redirect and I understand everything except for one thing: how exactly do I create the new page that would include the #REDIRECT code? The code makes sense to me, and I know that creating the page must be pretty simple, but there is a way to create pages without using the Article Wizard, right? I've added St Mary's Church, Maddington and St Mary's Church in Shrewton to the St. Mary's Church article. Very confusing having two of the same name in two parts of the same village. In the Shrewton article there are now references to both churches, and the Wiltshire CC links have photos of both, confirming the OP's initial statement. I've removed the erroneous photo from St Mary's Church, Maddington and from Maddington, Wiltshire, and labelled it correctly in Shrewton. If someone has a public domain photo of St Mary's Church, Maddington it could of course be uploaded and linked. According to the discussion on the Geograph page here, the problem is compounded by the fact that the OS map is in error in naming the wrong area as "Shrewton". Anyway, there is a free use image of the church with the castellated tower on that page, and a free use image of the uncastellated church here. Wikipedia pages are created by volunteers, interested in a subject, who have the ability and motivation to start an article that can stick. In the case of this actor, only one person ever decided to start an article and all they created was one sentence, which was deleted since it failed to indicate the importance of the subject. If you are motivated and have the ability, signup for an account and you start it. That's how all of our articles are created. tokyo spam

Hi, i when i read about tokyo, section 4 contains some shit about tokyo beeing the smallest city in the world. However when i try to remove this in the edit, i can't find it! On page history it seems like a bot already removed it but i've tried reloading several times and its still there! Does anyone else see it?

Special:Export - Categories with Colons

It would appear that the Special:Export interface won't populate from a category that has a colon in it. On de.wiki I'm trying to get a full export of Kategorie:Wikipedia:Exzellent but as the cat is actually called "Wikipedia:Exzellent" it just returns to the page without having added any articles. On the Rose Kabuye page, in the article intro, there is an inaccuracy ("Kanyange" given as birthplace is actually subject's surname). Wikipedia accepts images that are released under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike licence, which seems to be what you want.

If you upload the photographs at Commons, you can choose a licence. One option is Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 - that allows anyone to use the image, for any purpose, but they have to attribute the work (stating the 'author' that you enter) - that's the "Attribution" - and, any copies have to be under the same or similar license.

(edit conflict) I think the copyright status of the image has nothing to do with the statue, but only with who took the picture and when and if he or she is still alive or not. And yes, a picture of an uncopyrighted object can be copyrighted (we would normally assume that the person who took the picture is the copyright holder). If the image is still copyrighted depends on whether the person is still alive or not and if not, when he died and the copyright law of which country applies. Thanks. The {{Connected contributor}} should work for what I want. I now think the notice I was trying to re-find was somebody's unofficial creation because it was a non-standard color and was very brief. The fourth entry at Wikipedia:WikiProject Days of the year#Style says "references to support listed entries must be found in linked Wikipedia articles" (Note however that this is only a WikiProject guideline.). "Yellow-billed pintail" article has a serious problem

I was doing some reading on the article about the Anas genus of waterfowl birds when I clicked on the link to Yellow-billed Pintail and something disgusting and obscene came up. I can not even edit the link/direction article to fix it so someone with better knowledge or access should probably do something. Thanks for any help with this. adding a listing to a category

The way to add a name to a category is to add the category to the article. For instance if you wanted to add a person to the living people category, you would add [[Category:Living people]] to the bottom of the article. GB fan please review my editing 14:58, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Are you trying to create a brand new article on a Louisiana writer? Or are you trying to modify an article that already exists? Have you seen the page at [4] that shows the 117 writers in the "writers from Louisiana" category? (Just to be sure they aren't already there.)
