European Union

Marek - Notice you edit the European Union page - I don't edit, but someone should get rid of the Nazi flag. RJaffeEsq@aol.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.227.73.42 (talk) 20:52, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your message. I'm sorry I've looked at the European Union article, but I can't see that flag anywhere.
Could you point out the section in which you see it.

Block?

Hi, I saw you left a block warning for User talk:129.237.28.201. They have continued to blank the page of Robert Browning. it seems a block is in order. Thanks Span (talk) 00:33, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

August 2011 Wikification Drive

Hi,

On this subject, you ask how to define the "sphere of influence". However, in this article, there is a link to the definition of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spheres_of_influence

"In the field of international relations, a sphere of influence (SOI) is an area or region over which a state or organization has significant cultural, economic, military or political influence. While there may be a formal alliance or other treaty obligations between the influenced and influencer, such formal arrangements are not necessary and the influence can often be more of an example of soft power. Similarly, a formal alliance does not necessarily mean that one country lies within another's sphere of influence. In more extreme cases, a country within the "sphere of influence" of another may become a subsidiary of that state and serve in effect as a satellite state or de facto colony. The system of spheres of influence by which powerful nations intervene in the affairs of others continues to the present day. It is often analyzed in terms of superpowers, great powers, and/or middle powers."

GOCE drive newsletter

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". See you at the drive! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

I received a strange message...

Hello Marek69, I received a message from Wikipedia just now informing me about a supposed unconstructive edit that had been made on a "List of films" article, and this message stated the edit was made from my IP address... however, I never once visited that article nor made any edits to it. What surprised me was what the edit read "KILL EVERYONE YOU SEE IN THE NEXT 30 MINUTES". I'm here to say that this is some sort of error, I never paid a visit to this "List of films" article and left such an eerie message.

Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Untroublesomethoughts (talkcontribs) 21:01, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why was this not approved

Hi this is my first time using Wikipedia and I would like to update the Good Neighbor Pharmacy page. You recently said I violated the rules and I would like to know what I can do to correctly update it with the below information? About Good Neighbor Pharmacy

Good Neighbor Pharmacy is a network of more than 3,700 independent pharmacies across the United States. Our mission is to offer competitive pricing on a wide range of over-the-counter and prescription medications, while providing the personalized service that people have come to expect from a neighborhood pharmacy. Good Neighbor Pharmacy is part of a program offered by AmerisourceBergen, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical services companies serving the United States, Canada and selected global markets.

Good Neighbor Pharmacy in the Community

Valley Forge, PA (June 13, 2011) – Good Neighbor Pharmacy was a sponsor of the TODAY Show’s “Lend a Hand” program from June 13 -17. The program’s series traveled to five cities across the country, in five days helping support five community charities. This year, Al Roker traveled to Anchorage, AK; Las Vegas, NV; Houston, TX; Birmingham, AL and Charleston, WV. Good Neighbor Pharmacy supplied first aid kits, personal care items, bottled water and other items based on the needs of the charities. The charities also be received a financial donation from Good Neighbor Pharmacy.

hi Status Online

Hi, I can`t make my status online, how did you do it? is it a special code, you use? Marian Dan (talk) 18:53, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to sign sorry :D

Hi Marian Dan, thank you for your message.
I have used the Template:Statustop
I'm afraid that as I set this up so long ago, I'm not sure I remember exactly how to do it :-(
I think you just add (or variation of) to your user/talk page.
You have to add the code (import or copy) from User:Xenocidic/statusChanger2.js to your Special:MyPage/monobook.js or Special:MyPage/vector.js file (depends on which wiki-skin you use)
I think that you also need to manually create your Special:MyPage/Status page too.
As I say its been a long time since I set this up, I hope it works for you. :-)

Your reversion for Skopje

Hi Marek,

The rationale for the changes I made to the Skopje page are clearly laid out on the Discussion page for Skopje. If you object to that, I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts there. I would also appreciate if you took the time to check out yourself who reverted who first and what are the changes are at stake. Simply reverting it without an explanation (what you did, what the user before you did) is very arrogant, unwelcoming and insulting.

Thank you.

Wisco2000 (talk) 22:39, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just a clarification: when I made my first changes, I stated clearly why those changes were made (Quote: The statement that is removed was not supported by a single reference that was listed there.) Another user reversed my changes without explaining why. I have also left detailed comments (this time being the second time) on the talk page. You chose to revert my changes.

I would strongly advise you to undo your changes. They are very very very offensive and they amount to academic misconduct and misrepresentation and blatant plagiarism. I am assuming in good faith that you chose not to take a look at what you did. Wisco2000 (talk) 22:59, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wisco2000. I simply reverted this edit which, as I stated, was an 'unexplained removal of references'

quick question

Hi Marek69: What is the best way to solicit feedback on a new article? Sounds silly, but I'm a bit anxious and would like to make sure my first new submission is broadly acceptable. Thanks --Dkdantastic (talk) 14:59, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dkdantastic, thank you for your message.
I had a quick look at your contributions and noticed the article you are working on in your sandbox titled industrial revenue bond, I'm guessing this is the new article you are referring to.
If so, then I would say that this article looks pretty good. You have written it in an encyclopaedic style and added references.
It probably could do with a few more Wikilinks and to have a definate lead section followed by the main body of text under a suitable heading.
More information on article formats can be found in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style.
If you do want some more feedback on an article, Wikipedia:Requests for feedback is a good place to go.
I hope this information helps.

Hi, thanks for the welcome and also, a couple questions

Hello... Thanks for the cookies. I wasn't expecting that. Since you offered, I am really going to take you up on few questions.

I am brand new here and pretty much each thing I am wanting to do is hard for me to research. I am trying to learn how to "talk" correctly so I can at least get the right communications sent in the talk pages I need to comment in. Once I can at least "talk" I can ask questions in the appropriate talk pages and learn some of the nuances.

Right from the start I was finding myself seeing some very troubled conventions on the capitalization of mammal species' names. That led me to these discussions below.

Question 0: Have I communicated to you in the correct place? :)

Question 1: About talk. How do I reply directly to some talk. In particular. I found the link in this talk contribution did not lead to a location with the mentioned content. Can I reply to that talk and ask for an update on the location of the link being referenced? Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mammals#Where_to_put_a_decision...

Question 2: Perhaps as a novice it is presumptuous to want to add my name to this list. But out of curiosity how would I add my "vote" of support to this list below? Is it too audacious as a novice to support this? My experience is like many of the others on the "support" list; I have found the dagger is standard usage and long time convention of both biologists and paleontologists. Hi Mavaction, thank you for your message.
You seem to be communicating very well already, in my opinion.
I'll try to answer your questions:
Q 0. Yes, you have come to the correct place to talk to me :-)
Q 1. To reply to a comment, you simply add your comment below, starting with a : in order to indent your comment, as in the example below:
How's the soup? --User:John
:It's great!! --User:Jane
::I made it myself! --User:John
Let's move the discussion to Talk:Soup. --User:Jane
:I tend to disagree. --User:George

How's the soup? --John

It's great!! --Jane
I made it myself! --John

Let's move the discussion to Talk:Soup. --Jane

I tend to disagree. --George
You can read more on this subject on the help page Using talk pages
Q 2 I can't see any reason why you shouldn't add your comment to the discussion on Dagger (typography). You seem to know what you are talking about and newcomers are encouraged to participate in discussions.
I hope my comments have helped a bit. Please come back if there is anything else I can help you with.
Alternatively, if I'm not around or for another opinion, you can always ask questions at the Wikipedia:Help desk
Best of Luck.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Pizitz Middle School, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you! Thank you. -- Abel (talk) 04:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Abel, thank you for your message.
However I am not completely sure why you are giving me a level 1 template warning.
My edit to Pizitz Middle School was to revert of IP 68.186.183.152 edit who had previously been reverted by ClueBot.
Your edit was to revert back to IP 68.186.183.152's version, restoring the following line: 'really best exsperaince of my life' under References.
You also gave me a level 1 template warning for vandalism for my edit.
Are you sure that this is what you really intended to do?
I'm guessing that it was a mistake. :-)

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. sabotage of Bain and Company page

I keep on removing irrelevant sections from Bain and Company page, and two users, who are new and have only ever edited that page, who wrote the sections, keep on putting it back. Please can you remove those sections that they put in and block them?

Thanks, Daniel D3swooshg (talk) 17:03, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that there are problems with unsupported material being inserted by two editors who refuse to discuss this material on the talk page. Much of this material has citations, but the citations do not support the claims being made about misconduct by Bain, or do not support the suggestion that the action mentioned in the article was due to Bain's actions. (I was at first fooled by these citations.)
However, at least some of the material that Daniel wants to delete is (or appears to be) supported by the sources cited.
Daniel - please can you discuss your proposed deletions on the talk page.
Marek - help in trying to deal with the basic problem that Daniel is complaining about would be most welcome.--Toddy1 (talk) 17:01, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Toddy & Daniel, I think there should be a discussion on the article's talk page, detailing reasons for keeping/deleting the sections in question.
The current situation of reverting, re-reverting is not really achieving anything.
I propose to continue further discussions there

Please could you explain the advantages of a mysterious edit you made

I am sorry to trouble you, but you did an edit that I cannot understand to tables in the article on Dnipropetrovsk - your edit of 00:17, 16 September 2011 (UTC). In your edit you made changes such as:

  • From: !align = "center" colspan=5|
  • To: ! style="text-align:center;" colspan="5"|

and:

  • From: |align = "right"| 47,200
  • To: | style="text-align:right;"| 47,200

The changes do not seem to have made any difference, so why did you do them?

Part of the reason for asking, is that I sometimes find that when make strange apparently pointless edits, they sometimes make them for very good reasons, and if I can understand why, I can do better in the future.--Toddy1 (talk) 04:38, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, your edit summary was: "Filling in 1 references using Reflinks", which I found counter-intuitive.--Toddy1 (talk) 04:51, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Toddy1, thank you for your message
In answer to your question, I was using a script called Reflinks (which adds title to bare references in the forms of or )
In the example you mention, my edit to Dnipropetrovsk, the script 'filled in the title for 1 reference' , i.e. it made the following change:
Dnipropetrovsk is represented within Ukrainian Bandy and Rink-bandy Federation.
was changed to:
Dnipropetrovsk is represented within Ukrainian Bandy and Rink-bandy Federation.
The above change were the primary reason for my edit.
The rest of the changes, as I gather, are automatic format changes, which the author of Reflinks has added.
The script only does this if you have the 'apply common fixes' box checked.
The author's description of these 'common fixes' is 'this applies fixes such as link simplification, HTML 4 to XHMTL+CSS conversions, template fix ups, and reference formatting.'
I do not uses Relinks that often, so my knowledge of it is very limited.
(I'm sure the author, User:Dispenser, would be able to explain the script a lot better than me.)
However, I hope my attempt at an explanation has helped you understand my edit a bit better, and make it a bit less mysterious. :-)

Creating a page about "collaborative decision making"

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the help offered. I want to write a page about a filed I am researching "Collaborative decision making". Today it is redirected to to Collaboration. How can I redirect it to stand-alone page?

Thanks, --Tal.yaron (talk) 08:51, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tal, thank you or your message.
Before changing the Collaborative decision making, I think you should first prepare the article you are going to replace it with.
In my opinion it is best to create the article first in your user space.
As a registered user, you have your own user space. You can start the new article there, on a subpage, i.e. User:Tal.yaron/Collaborative decision making. (Just click on the red link to create)
For more information on how to create your own subpage, see here
You can then take your time getting the article into shape, exactly the way you want it. You can also ask other editors to help work on it.
Once you are happy that it is ready to go, you can move it into the "live" Wikipedia area. The article can then be moved into the main area, replacing the redirect. This is not difficult.
If you require any assistance along the way, please do not hesitate to contact me here.

Hello. As a Polish-speaking WikiGnome, I'd like to solicit your help in testing a new tool. For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Recently, the tool has been expanded to work on non-English Wikipedias. A small set of suggested fixes for red-links on the Polish-language Wikipedia have been prepared and I'm hoping to interest some Polish-language speakers (such as yourself) to work through them.

If you are interested, please visit http://toolserver.org/~tb/RLRL/quick.php?lang=pl. Each time you refresh the page you'll be presented with three new suggested fixes. I'll be happy to answer any questions on the tools talk page. - TB (talk) 20:10, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, in situations like this it would be useful to have the 'block' button.
Not really given RfA much thought, apart from being able to set aside time to participate (a bit scarce at the moment).
I will indeed be at the 50th meetup in London. It sounds like its going to be a good one.
Hopefully see you there. :-) -- Marek.69 talk 00:28, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

numbered schools

Hi, Marek69! I want write new little articles about my primary school - 189th Secondary School. My school located in Desna raion, Kiev, Ukraine. But also there is school with same number and same name in other country - 189th Secondary School - in Minsk_Belarus, in St.Peterburg_Russia, in Baku_Azerbajdzhan maybe in Tashkent_Uzbekistan. There are no according articles in wikipedia about this schols, but they may appear in future. 189th Secondary School (Ukraine) sounds fine to me.
One word of advice: I would start the article in your user space first, i.e. User:Leonid76/189th Secondary School (Ukraine), rather than making it 'live' straight away (see my comments on this subject above)

If you are ready to move the page to main space, on the article under the tab Page, you will find a link called Move Page
Clicking on this will bring up a page containing the following:
Move page: User:Leonid76/189th Secondary School (Ukraine)
To new title:

Reason:
Where it says To new title:, fill in 189th Secondary School (Ukraine)
Where it says Reason:, fill in 'moving to mainspace' or a similar explanation.
Then your article will be moved.

Thank you for help, Marek69. I try to write same articles in Russian and Ukrainian language and then linked--Leonid76 (talk) 23:27, 24 September 2011 (UTC).[reply]

  • I'm sorry for my intrusion here, but I see some reasons to suppose that 189th Secondary School (Kiev) would be more appropriate. The thing is, in ex-USSR countries the way to distinguish schools is somewhat special, normally they're just numbered starting from 1 in every locality with optional titles or clarifications being added when necessary. Therefore, despite this school happened to be the only one #189 in Ukraine, first of all is "The 189th Secondary School of the Desna Raion in Kiev (Kyiv)", so that all of the 188 preceding ones are supposed to be located in the city and nowhere else. Should it be, say, number 89, most likely other schools in different cities would be found with the same number, thus in case of full coverage the naming system would be a mess with alternating city and country names. Here, not so many secondary schools from those countries are described, that's why the problem about their peculiar naming convention hasn't been considered in earnest, but I'm inclined to specify the city wherever possible, based on the compiled arguments. All in all, no "Secondary School #xxx in Ukraine" exists, the city or town name is always given in its full title, whereas every locality assigns numbers totally independently of others. This is the main difference from UK or USA educational institutions, which are ordinarily named, ruling out most coincidences. Please reckon with these arguments, I'm not that well-informed about local traditions and conventions, so I'm leaving it for your consideration. Thanks, --Microcell (talk) 20:04, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Microcell, thank you for your message.
Also thank you for adding extra information to the discussion. I will inform Leonid of your input.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 20:12, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I told him the same some minutes before in uk.wiki, I simply wanted to let you consider the case :) --Microcell (talk) 20:17, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for letting me know. You're probably right, 189th Secondary School (Kiev) would be a more accurate title for the article
We might as well get it right from the beginning. I'm guess Leonid would have no problem with the change. -- Marek.69 talk 20:25, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I change from 1 to 2 but problem with numbered schools remains an open. In according to 3 the 189th_Secondary_School_(Ukraine) does not mean 189th Secondary School of Ukraine. In this case (Ukraine)/(Kiev)/(Kiev, Ukraine) is only location of 189th Secondary School. From other hand oficial title name The 189th Secondary School ... of the Desna Raion of Kiev is not correct, becouse there is no numeration in Desna Raion. Schools numerated in all city of Kiev, include of Desna Raion. This oficial title name not used in real life, people used simlyfied name - 189th school or 189th Secondary School. Best Regards--Leonid76 (talk) 22:15, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Leonid, thank you for your message.
As I understand, the number 189 signifies that the school is the 189th Secondary School in Ukraine. Is this correct?
I was just thinking; Is the title that important?, i.e. 189th Secondary School (Ukraine) is a redirect to this page, so anyone searching 189th Secondary School (Ukraine) or 189th Secondary School (Kiev) will end up at this article {plus any other redirects which can be created to facilitate this)
The exact meaning and significance of the 189th Secondary School and its relevance to the Desna Region, Kiev or the Ukraine can be explained in more detail, for the reader, within the article.
I'm not sure if this is helpul or not, as you and User:Microcell seem to be much more knowledgeable on the subject than me. :-)
Best Regards -- Marek.69 talk 22:52, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have been studying Wiki's help pages and looking around behind the scenes, but I feel that to be good enough I should treat this as a whole year of college in learning. I found you and see that you are reasonable, very experienced, and fair. I'm not ready to dive in totally (may drown lol), jeez I haven't even started my talk page or profile yet. One thing I've learned from looking about is to stay out of "wars" and to avoid editing pages that can be volitile. If I have an occasional question - do you have time to answ. it? And I'll even leave out my whining! Thanks, in advance, for reading.Jill333 (talk) 07:56, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jill, thank you for your message.
Welcome to Wikipedia, I hope you enjoy your time here
From what you have said, you seem to have a very good grasp of Wikipedia's basic principles already.
I've been editing for about three years and still feel that I have a lot to learn.
As for user pages, they don't have to be complicated, you can start by simply saying "Hi, name is..".
For more information on the subject you can consult the WP:User Page article.
You are absolutely correct to avoid the conflict and drama. In my experience this is not so enjoyable.
If you have any questions or need assistance, just drop me a line here on my talk page, I will do my best to help.
If I'm not around you can always email me or you need help immediately, you can simply type helpme at the bottom of your talk page, someone should answer your request shortly.
Meanwhile, wishing you Happy Wiki-ing

Huggle templates

Hi Marek, hope you've been well since we chatted briefly at Wikimania. I saw you're online, so I thought I'd let you know that we're starting up another A/B test of level 1 warnings. If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Cheers, Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 21:16, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven, thank you for your message.
Its great that you're doing another test. I would be interested in browsing through the results if that is possible.
I do have various thoughts on the subject. I shall have to devote some time to composing some notes on the subject, which I will then be very glad to share with you.
Generally I think we are going in the right direction. I too dislike templates, but I think they are a necessaries evil at the moment. A lot could do with being rewritten to be friendlier.
Since Wikimania, I feel I have taken much away from the discussions I took part in, and think I have changed my editing behaviour and attitude to dealing with vandalism. So far, with many positive results.
One thought I have had recently, if it is possible, could we somehow differentiate between new and experienced user for the messages they receive from a template?, i.e. more comprehensive, helpful and informative messages for brand new users, which perhaps could be modified to be 'short and sweet' for experienced users? (Sometimes the same template, which is useful to a newcomer, can be considered 'patronising' by users with more knowledge and experience)
I won't go on now, but when I do write my essay, I shall message you. :-)

Hi Marek, hope all is well with you and yours. I've finally been shamed into creating User:WereSpielChequers/Recall (Pedro named me in his, so I realised I really ought to have one myself). Would you be willing to be on the list? If so just edit it and move your name out of the hidden bit. ϢereSpielChequers 20:49, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WereSpielChequers, thank you for your message.
Yes, I am very well, thank you, I hope you are too.
I've already added my name to the list.
Hope to see you at the 50th meetup.

Speaking of the meetup... will you be staying realtively late like last time? I'm looking at getting my train tickets, and the trains get much cheaper after about 9pm, but I'd rather pay a bit more than have to sit in Holborn on my own for hours! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:53, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi HJ, I have a similar situation with my train, so I will probably be staying quite late at the meetup (at least 8:30 - 9:00)
I've also heard that there are some 'hardened' Wikipedians who stay until 'kick-out' time sometimes, so you may be in luck if you want to stay even later. ;-)

I don't fancy staying until the early hours, but staying til 9 or 10 (as opposed to 6 or 7) could save me £15. Which also means I can afford more beer! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Huggle template testing

Hey Marek,

You may not have noticed, but you're currently part of a little experiment Steven Walling and I are running on en.wiki: we're A/B testing Huggle templates to see if changing the content of their message has any effect on the user that receives them. We've been running the test since Sunday and will turn it off in two days and analyze all the data we've collected (over 1500 users Huggled as of yesterday!), but I wanted to get some unscientific feedback from some of the folks I noticed using our templates – including you :)

So, first thing's first: did you happen to notice that you were sending out different templates? And, more importantly, did you notice any difference on your talk page? More or less people than usual coming to talk to you? More or less vandalism or constructive questions?

Thanks a lot! And if you're interested in helping us tweak more templates, please let me know! We only tested the level 1 vandalism warning this week, but we're thinking of revamping the other level 1 warnings (test, NPOV, blanking, etc.) too. --Maryana (WMF) (talk) 18:56, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maryana, thank you for your message.
Sorry for the delay in replying to you. I needed a little time to think on the matter.
Yes I was aware of the experiment as Steven kindly notified me when it was starting.
Recently, since discussions at Wikimania in Haifa, I have slightly modified the way I use huggle.
For example, I now tend rate the vandalism on a scale of severity;
Only vandalism at the top of the scale, i.e. severe blatent & deliberate disruption is dealt with in the normal way; four escalatiog templates
Everything else, I apply a good dose of WP:AGF
If the edits are typical of a newbie, inexperienced, but not obviously bad faith, I will revert the edit and leave an appropriate explanation in the edit summary.
I will typically leave a normal friendly welcome on their talk page, and unless they obviously look bad faith they will not get a single template message at all from me.
If appropriate, I will try to guide them to the relevent help page or guideline to show them the correct methods.
If the person looks like they are starting to troll, I apply Wikipedia:Deny recognition. I will give them a normal friendly welcome on their talk page and then simply revert their edits, again without any templating.
My thinking is without a template they do not have anyone to fight with, their edits being quickly reverted, they frequently get bored and stop.
If they do not stop, a friendly word on their talk page. If after this they continue misbehaving or escalate their attack, they are treated in the normal way.
Generally, if in doubt, I find it a good idea to assume good faith, leave a normal welcome (rather than level 1 warning), take some time out of huggling to analyse the user's other edits, work out what their motives are, then try to engage in a friendly conversation and offer help.
If the above fails you can be pretty sure the person does not want to be constructive, and can then receive stricter warnings for their behaviour and the inevitable consequences.
I'm not saying that I apply the above with every single edit I do with huggle, but I try to apply it as often as possible.
I feel I've had most success by simply not templating, unless absolutely necessary. Generally, most 'vandalism' is not bad faith, just simple newbie mistakes or juvenile pranks.
In answer to your question, if I noticed any difference during the template experiments - I would say at these times there seem to be less direct attacks at me; my talk page and user page, so yes, I think it makes a difference. :-)
I am hoping to feedback more of my observations to Steven and yourself.
I hope this helps in some way with your research.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 01:30, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Marek, hope you're doing well!

  2. uw-delete1-rand

I mostly use Wikipedia for info about films and historical bios. Many articles about the entertainment industry (including novels and top hit songs) are amazingly complete. Much of the medical / pharmaceutical info is very helpful-- I know your mission is NOT to suggest areas of needed research-- but I wish you would. My area of expertise WAS *digital signal processing* but it is so time consuming to proof-read a mathematical text. I am age 67 living in Cambodia. Anyhow I will continue to point out what I think are areas of omission and warn you of occasional spam and crudities I come across in the body of an article. Good to see you the other day at the museum. Quick question if I may... when we were looking at the Stevengraphs (the woven silk bookmarks), can you remember which of us took photos of them? I was going to write up a quick article on them, but can't remember who photo'd them... Cheers! Hchc2009 (talk) 18:38, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DJ, thank you for the barnstar.
In order to upload images, simply go to the following page Wikipedia:Upload.
It is also listed under Toolbox (left hand column on Wikipedia pages) as Upload file
Simply follow the instructions there
i.e. If the image is your own work, click on 'It is entirely my own work' , which will take you to the next stage, recommending that you upload your image to Commons
Wikimedia Commons is a repository of free content images, sound and other multimedia files, which can accessed from all different language versions of Wikipedia
Using the upload wizard, you should find the process straightforward.
If you have any questions or problems, please come back and I will try and help.

A little more care with those buttons, please: this was a good revert but the edit summary makes no sense. Regards, Looie496 (talk) 00:49, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Looie496, thank you for your message.
I was aware of the edit summary as soon as I reverted. Unfortunately you cannot change the summary after the event. It was supposed to read 'Reverted unexplained removal of content'.
Huggle appears to be functioning a little weird tonight (for me anyway) Instead of just the diffs, it's displaying the whole page including side menu, and has shifted everything to the right. Also, it is not reverting (or not displaying/reporting revert) immediately. Possible reason could be this (?)

Message

The rule is stupid because it says you cannot make 3 edits on the same page. So if you correct 4 errors, you are punished. Someone needs to re-write the rule or Wikipedia is pretty stupid.

Besides, nobody else discussed it so why are you picking on me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wkpeediaerror (talkcontribs) 21:29, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wkpeediaerror, I'm sorry but I believe you may have misunderstood the three revert rule. It is not that you cannot make 3 edits. Its about repeatedly reinserting material or repeatedly removing the same material another user has removed/deleted. Reverting, re-reverting is called an edit war.
A revert means undoing the actions of another editor. The 3RR says an editor must not perform more than three reverts, in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material, on a single page within a 24-hour period.
Please understand I am not picking on anybody, it is just the fact that I noticed that you were a new user (the others have been editing for a while and should be aware of Wikipedia's rules) and wanted to draw your attention to the 3RR rule, in order to prevent you from getting into trouble inadvertently.
If you find yourself in this situation, it is always advisable to discuss you reasoning on the talk page.
I hope this explanation helps.

Thanks for the cookies!

Hi Marek, thanks for the welcome and links to five pillars which I have read. I am new to wikipedia editing and so it seems I may have got off on the wrong foot. I created the dom&nic page because I found the Dom and Nic page and felt it was missing a lot a factual encyclopedic information that I could quickly add with references. Being one half of dom&nic I new the information first hand but understand that it needs to be referenced to third party sources. I totally understand and agree with the rules of COI and have since been advised by another helpful editor that it is not a good idea to edit information about ones self. My intention was only to make an article that is factually interesting, neutral in tone and as comprehensive as possible. I first looked at a number of wiki articles about other contemporary music video and commercials directors and took the lead from these. I was surprised that another editor felt it inappropriate to include a videography compiling the names and dates of work directed by dom&nic and so removed them. I first compiled the list with links to the work on youtube so a reader could see the work in question, this was removed with the comment that this is not a place for people to put links to their Youtube videos. Whilst not fully understanding the problem with this I re-listed the work without the links to the videos but that too was removed. Any advice or help you could give me would be much appreciated. I think it would be good to merge the dom and nic and dom&nic articles as you have proposed. I created the dom&nic partly because I felt nervous about editing an article that someone else had started (silly, I now realise because that is how wikipedia works!!) and partly because we are aways known as dom&nic rather than Dom and Nic. Many Thanks Domley (talk) 12:30, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Domley, thank you for your message.
The discussion on dom&nic resulted in a consensus to merge the dom&nic article into Dom and nic
I have now merged the two articles into one: Dom and nic.
The article you created dom&nic has now been changed into a redirect to Dom and nic.
It is good that you have taken time to understand Wikipedia's policies - it really helps.
I notice Tom has given you some good advice, particularly about our conflict of interest policy.
Now that you have disclosed your connection, it would be best to avoid directly editing the article directly yourself.
If you have any suggestions or proposals to improve the article, please list them on the article's talk page
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi BlakeAllred, thank you for your message.
There was a missing | (pipe) in the infobox. This character is needed to separate the fields.
I've added it now, and infobox should work fine.

Just one more question. Where was the pipe supposed to be? Thanks for the help--BlakeAllred (talk) 02:27, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Blake, if you look at the infobox data:
name           = Hunter High School|
image          = |
caption        = |
motto          = |
established    = 1990|
type           = Free public|
District       = Granite School District|
grades         = 10-12|
principal      = John Welburn|
address = 4200 South 5600 West. West Valley City, Utah|
country        = USA|
The pipes separate one field from the next, in this case they are at the end of each line (but can also be placed at the beginning)
