:I think there is probably enough to this topic that a good article could be created, but right now the short blurb you've written should probably be expanded prior to submitting it. Expanding the article will safeguard against its removal as a mere definition of the term (under WP:DICTIONARY) and will provide a framework on which other editors can help you to grow the article further. The sources you have should also be made clearer (e.g. you have to be more specific than "Aryeh Kaplan books on kabbalah" - you need the name of the books used and the authors and page numbers if possible) and they should be formatted according to WP:CITE. It looks like you have a good start on the article though. If you need further explanations, please ask here again. -Thibbs (talk) 20:56, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

APC history
I am a veteran of World War II having enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in January 1942. I stayed in the Marines for 10 years and was honorably discharged in January 1952 on expiration of my enlistment.
As a Marine, I received all medical care from the U. S. Navy who furnished medics (called corpsmen) to the Marines. I do believe that the absolute most commonly prescribed medicine/drug was the APC, AKA 'All Purpose Capsule' although I must say that the medicine NEVER came in capsule form but in a shape of what we now call a 'caplet'.
It was issued for EVERY ailment from hangnails to hangovers and it was the most consistent medical staple in existence at the time. Ask any Marine of WWII vintage and he'll tell you that the Corps would not have been as successful as it was in that era without the benefit of the magical APC.

This info is provided for a personal user's slant on the oft-asked question: What the hell is an APC?

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

June 14

How can I add information to a article in Wikipedia?

Hello,

When I did a search for my 2nd Cousin, FRITZ TRUAN, I found some information on him.

How can I add information, a link, from his name and add a photo.

Thanks, Diana Truan Weaver — Preceding unsigned comment added by ShastaDi (talkcontribs) 01:01, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. 71.146.10.213 (talk) 01:35, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the template used above is well-suited as a response to this post—71.146.10.213: do you see anything in the post that indicates this person is not asking about adding information to Wikipedia?

In any event, if your cousin is the Rodeo Champion mentioned in List of World All-Around Rodeo Champions, then based on my search of Google book sources and some news sources, he does appear to be a sufficiently notable subject to warrant an article. However, generally we strongly discourage people from writing articles about people they know personally, are related to, or are friends with, as doing so presents a conflict of interest. But the creation of an article is the manner he would normally be added to Wikipedia in some way, and where a photo would be placed. Despite the conflict of interest issue, I am going to nevertheless post a template below that contains quite a bit of standard advice about creating an article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk)

A Wizard is available to walk you through these steps. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

You will need to first register an account, which has many benefits, including the ability to create articles. Once you have registered, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines which all articles should comport with. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite to reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
If you still think an article is appropriate, see Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. An Article Wizard is available to walk you through creating an article, but you will need to create an account to use it. if you don't wish to do so, you can submit a proposal for an article at Articles for Creation.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:29, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding facts in article that are not included.

An article about Park Slope, Brooklyn omits the following four interesting and important facts about the neighborhood:

1. Barack Obama lived on Second Street in Park Slope immediately after he graduated from Columbia University

2. Al Capone grew up on Garfield Place in Park Slope

3. Park Slope now contains the largest Historic Distirict in New York City

$. The Dogers played there first baseball games in a ballpark where Washington Park is now located.

How would I go about getting them included? 70.107.122.85 (talk) 01:22, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First, find a reliable source that supports your information. 71.146.10.213 (talk) 01:35, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"The Dodgers played their first baseball games..." Don't they teach spelling anymore? Roger (talk) 07:22, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Allowed to seek help as an IP user? Being followed around Wikipedia?

Hi, so I got involved in an edit conflict. During the conflict they would tell me that my posts towards them were violating policies and guidelines yet their posts do the same. I've tried to resolve it and have informed the users involved about my real intents and that they were wrong about their perceptions of my posts. They insist and has been following my contributions page since then. So I decided to go the discussion pages concerning those policies they mentioned and ask other people there but these users would pop out of nowhere and posts that there is no need for me to ask anything there (but the other users around those boards disagree). I still find this disruptive. How can I block them from watching my contributions page?

Btw sorry for posting under an IP Address. I want to conceal my account's identity and prevent them from coming to this page to turn it into another edit conflict. 119.224.27.62 (talk) 01:31, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can't block someone from watching anyone's contribution page here at Wikipedia. If there is something else that you want to ask you could list the names of the users and the policies that they mentioned. 71.146.10.213 (talk) 01:37, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I could ask about canvassing. After a consensus has been reached in a discussion, I decided to discuss the problem in other discussion pages regarding an article's notability. However I got followed there. They also discussed among talk pages that I was going against the consensus. So is this really canvassing? 119.224.27.62 (talk) 02:00, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If its not possible to block 'someone'. Can I block everybody instead? 119.224.27.62 (talk) 05:24, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It might be Wikihounding. Are they following you with intent to disrupt whatever you're trying to do (even constructive things) or drive you away? Have you tried the methods laid out at WP:dispute resolution? If so, which ones? - Purplewowies (talk) (How's my driving?) 02:47, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah they are kind of doing that. Then even discussed about me on their talk pages and had began assuming that I had some serious intentions and that I wasn't going to stop until I could over turn their consensus. I have told them repeatedly that I don't want to fight and that those are not my intentions. I eventually gave up on trying to come to an understanding with them. Now they are still following me and making more assumptions that I still have those intents. I don't think that the WP:dispute resolution is helpful because its mainly about contents in articles. I think this is beyond that. 119.224.27.62 (talk) 05:24, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you are concerned about people unfairly stalking you and reverting you without cause, perhaps you should try a noticeboard like WP:WQA, which is more suited towards behavioral conflicts. I would try that first, and if nothing comes of that, you could escalate to WP:ANI. Note, however, that people at both of those noticeboards are going to need direct evidence, in the form of diffs, that shenanigans are going on, so at some point if you want redress, you're going to have to do so at your main account. --Jayron32 05:58, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alright thanks for the tip! I will look at those links that you guys have provided carefully and will began researching on this issue before taking any action. 119.224.27.62 (talk) 11:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Geographical coordinates

Are citations required for Geographical coordinates? - Chandan Guha (talk) 02:58, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Citations are required for any material that is challenged or likely to be challenged. In general it is a good idea to include citations for factual information like that. -Thibbs (talk) 03:28, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The general guidance on this subject is at Wikipedia:Obtaining geographic coordinates, with some good discussion on the talk page as well. If properly obtained, as described there, coordinates are not likely to be challenged, therefore they do not need to be cited unless they are, in fact, challenged. (Since the purpose of citations is so information in Wikipedia can be verified, most coordinates do not need to be cited simply because a person can verify the coordinates by calling them up on an online map and looking or by going to those coordinates on the ground; they are, in effect, self-verifying.) Even if they are challenged, in most cases there is a clear and obvious error and they can simply be corrected without citation. I generally do not include a citation unless there is an actual dispute, largely because our reference tags do not work with coordinates (especially in titles, where they do not work at all) and the "source" parameter in the coord tag isn't really meant for citing in this sense. If I include coordinates for a place or thing which no longer exists or which cannot otherwise be easily verified on the ground, I'll frequently indicate my source in a hidden comment just after the coord tag, just so as to forestall a dispute (example). David Lewis (trumpeter/pianist/composer)

There are a number of people named David Lewis. I'm tempted to move David Lewis (trumpeter/pianist/composer) to David A. Lewis to shorten the disambiguator since it seems ungainly. But I'm wondering if I can get any opinions from the Help Deskers to see if I'm on the right track. Note: There are already two other people who have (musician) tagged on. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 03:57, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are there places he's credited as David A. Lewis? Dru of Id (talk) 06:41, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have boldly moved David Lewis (trumpeter/pianist/composer) to David Lewis (Australian musician). Disambiguated titles should be as simple as possible, and, I think I am correct in this, article titles should not contain forward slashes as they actually create subpages.--ukexpat (talk) 13:34, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Subpages are disabled in article space so article titles can contain slashes. The talk page will be a subpage which can cause confusion. See WP:NC-SLASH. But David Lewis (trumpeter/pianist/composer) was a poor title and I support your move. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:27, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dru, I have no idea but it was one possible solution that I thought might help. UK, thanks! Dismas|(talk) 17:47, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AFD Summary ArkyBot Dragons flight

Is there any working AFD summaries that produce outputs similar to User:ArkyBot/AFD summary/all and User:Dragons flight/AFD summary/All? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 06:56, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, not sure if any others that are exactly similar but maybe the following are on the track of what you're looking for: , User:DumbBOT/TimeSortedAfD and Category:Wikipedia deletion sorting.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipe-tan on porn website

I am not certain if this topic should be initiated here, but it may deal with using Wikipedia. As could be seen here or on the website, can anyone ask them to remove Wikipe-tan from their website? --124.122.234.207 (talk) 07:01, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Images of Wikipe-tan fall under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. This means anybody is free to share (copy, distribute, and transmit), and to remix (adapt) the work as long as proper attribution is given and the remix/adaptation also bears the same license. The image cannot be used to suggest that Wikipedia endorses this porn site, but if it's not being used that way and it has attribution and bears the same license then they are free to use it. More information on this concept known as "copyleft" can be found here. If you think there is a violation of one of the terms of the license then you can send them a note using a modified versions of these forms, however unless you were significantly involved in the creation of the image that is used in violation of its license you should avoid initiating a legal action. Instead you should contact the image's creator(s) and ask them to do so. -Thibbs (talk) 11:49, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My name is shaikh salim jamil ahmed here is a request to Mr. Amir Khan to safe muslim community from disaster every second house divorce is taking shape and their is no way to stop them the reason behind this no common person know the right way of Talaq.

I am personally victim of this system,If we take this major step we can safe we can safe lots of family from disaster and we have to make a registered commity for nikkah nama which can be registered and we receive a marrige certificate from the centre. and if any body want a Talaq person should approch the nikkahnama centre for further quires and to go for talaq through right channel. and the person can get justice.

I think I can help here a little bit. I hope you are talking about Khan's TV show Satyameva Jayate, where he discusses/researches on several social issues (a very good show I agree). If you have some WP:RS for that statement which proves three Talak divorce system is incorrect– you can post in talk pages of those articles (with your references) and request editors to change it! --Tito Dutta 18:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MDT-FIT

Hello, Can someone review my article and advise? I am writing about a process called MDT-FIT: Multidisciplinary Teams Feedback For Improving Teamworking. This is a process designed for cancer teams within the UK to self-access themselves against guidelines published by the National Cancer Action Team and is set for national roll-out in 2013. Am looking forward to your comments. MDT-FIT: Multidisciplinay Teams Feedback For Improving Teamworking -- Pg12345 (talk) 10:31, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The correct link to the article is MDT-FIT: Multidisciplinary Team Feedback For Improving Teamworking. I think it looks like an WP:ADVERT. Roger (talk) 10:39, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems unlikely that such feedback would ever meet WP:GNG since sources that are independent of the subject MDT-FIT, e.g., newspapers, magazines, and books, won't be writing about the improvement feedback to the management system. -- JeffreyBillings (talk) 13:34, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have a query about a couple of articles that are being considered for deletion. If you go to the article Barry Smitherman or the article Plane ride from hell, you will see that there are notices heading these articles stating that the articles are being considered for deletion. The notices contain the magic words "Please share you thoughts on this article's entry are Wikipedia: Articles for deletion. However, in both cases, when you go "this article's entry", you will see that the words are in red. Yet, it is still possible to click on the words and get to the article's entry. Can some please me how this came to be - I always thought that red wikilinks were where when one clicked, one did not through to anything? Many thanks for any responses, I am just curious! ACEOREVIVED (talk) 13:27, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this is related to server lag - if you purge the page, the link will turn blue. A more technical explanation would interest me, as well, though. Yunshui  13:32, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've noticed the server purge lag for deletion notices as well and was wondering what's up. The server purge lag for deletion notices seems to be a recent phenomenon. -- JeffreyBillings (talk) 13:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's a known issue when using Twinkle for nominations. The nomination page is created so shortly before the article is tagged that the MediaWiki software doesn't register the nomination page exists. I fixed it with purges. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:37, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've seen those article page notice redlinks more than 24 hours after they originally were posted, after the time when the server should have purged the page. For new users, it's not fair for them to be presented with a red link because they won't know where to go to discuss the article or to even purge the page. Is there a way to modify twinkle so that an article page purge is part of the twinkle deletion notice posting script? -- JeffreyBillings (talk) 13:45, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It was suggested at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle/Archive 28#AfD template red link with no result. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:19, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there,

The following page was pulled for copyright investigation on 3 June 2012: Imagini (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views).

I would like to edit the content in question so that the page can be re-submitted for admin approval.

Is it possible to get the original article back and simply change the parts in question or does the whole article need to be re-written?

Thank you!

There is guidance on the correct procedure on the page Imagini in the section headed "Can you help resolve this issue?". Roger (talk) 14:46, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
However, changing a few words does not make the copyright problem go away. If you want to write your own article, that's very good, but I suggest you don't start with the copyrighted material. --ColinFine (talk) 16:00, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Message about editing/vandalism

I have never edited any pages on Wikipedia, but have received a message telling me I have made unacceptable edits to a page on Jacob Black (who?). Your own user contribution log for my IP address shows no editing history. 81.151.76.40 (talk) 20:15, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see a record of vandalism from this IP address on 21 September 2009. The record can be accessed here. If you were not the user who made this vandalism (and considering the account has been inactive since 2009 I suspect you are not the same person) then you can safely ignore the message. Anti-vandalism templates like the one you saw are designed to give troublesome editors fair warning so that if they persist in vandalizing they can be fairly blocked. If you aren't the vandal then don't worry about it. -Thibbs (talk) 20:38, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(After Edit Conflict with Thibbs above...) The history for your IP does indeed show an edit to that article. Almost 3 years ago. IP addresses get reassigned all the time by service providers. Unless yours is a static IP (possible, but not likely), that edit was almost certainly made by someone else, and the IP was reassigned to you at a later date. The warning message on the IP talk page is similarly old. In general, ignore it. It does not apply to you. - TexasAndroid (talk) 20:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What code does media wiki use for bold and italics or where would I go to find out

So I recently discovered that <strong> and <b> are completely different when read by a speech reader. The same occurs in <em> and <i> so when we usefor bold text and for italic text which is used? Personally, I think <strong> should always be used by our software when we are bolding; however, italics are different. Sometimes we are emphasizing, and other times we italicize something that is italicized for appearance, like books or supreme court cases. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:26, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bold text and Italic text render as Bold text and Italic text. Roger (talk) 21:29, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It uses <b></b> for bolding and <i></i> for italics. I determined this by going to a random article with bolding and italics in it and looking at the source code to see how it rendered the text. Specifically, in Firefox, I clicked on Tools → Web Developer → Page Source; I then went back to the article and copied a word that was bolded and used the find function ctrl/⌘ Cmd+f to find it in the source code. In Safari it would be View → View Source.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:15, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can't believe I didn't think of that. I've been messing with source code all day. This seems like a poor decision to me because <b> and <i> don't do anything when a text to speech editor is being used. <strong> and <em> will make the text be read in a strong way or in an emphasized manner. A person who needs text to speech would have no idea text is bolded or italicized under our current system. Ryan Vesey Review me! 23:15, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I know very little about the visually impaired but read text and spoken text are quite different. I'm imagining every article opening with the name said more loudly and think that would sound odd. Say The Dark Side of the Moon, if you were reading it out loud you wouldn't read it as "THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is the eighth studio album by..." Italics, on the other hand, one does sometime read with more inflection. Anyway, way outside my knowledge base.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:27, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia doesn't oftentimes use bold for emphasis in articles, but I know for a fact that there are blind editors and that bold is used for emphasis in discussions. I wish I could hear how a text editor would read it if it was enclosed <strong></strong>. I do feel like editors who create a listen to this article set the first instance of the article apart by saying it strongly, but I'm not positive. Stephens City, Virginia appears to, but that may just be due to the accent. Where do you think I should head to find this out mediawiki or meta.wiki? Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was once emphatically told not to use html markup but to use the single quotes markups for bold and italics. Roger (talk) 11:07, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we all do. The issue is about what the software actual uses to render italics and bold, not what people type (or should type). The italics around "people type" that I just wrote was placed by typing doubled apostrophes. But after I click save, if you look at the source code of this page, you'll see that the actual rendering of that wikimarkup is translated into html, using <i></i> (as opposed to <em></em>) So this thread has nothing to do with whether or not people should use html or wikimarkup but about how the software source renders the wikimarkup in source code for purposes of text readers.
Ryan, why not ask some visually impaired editors (or those who deal with the issues more intimately) what they think? Maybe Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Accessibility is a central place to bring it up.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:41, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting article from Sandbox

I have tested in my sandbox a major edit of a published article I previously submitted. How do I transfer from there to place I can submit the major edit without cutting and pasting?

Hcrater (talk) 21:29, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can find instructions on how to "move" the article from userspace into mainspace at WP:MOVE. Basically you just click the dropdown menu at the top (to the right of the "view history" tab) and select "move". It will prompt you to enter the new name for your article and this way you'll preserve your edit history that shows how you created the article. If you need further help, please ask for more details. -Thibbs (talk) 21:35, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The OP was asking about moving a major edit of a published article: you cannot use 'Move' for that unless you get the original article deleted first. I think cutting and pasting is the only way (and I see that HCrater appears to have done so, at Two-body Dirac equations). --ColinFine (talk) 08:44, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Robbie article

To whom it may concern,

FYI - just a casual sports fan who was researching the Late and great Joe Robbie at:

Joe Robbie (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Noticed that the info box on the top right shows his date of birth and then his age in brackets. This makes the assumption he's still alive (might be something that shows on other pages as a standard feature). He died though! Joe passed away in 1990. There may need to be an amendment to the programming for these sites?

Yours sincerely,

Monobook question

Is there a way to edit User:Juhachi/monobook.js so that the sandbox link in the top right between talk and preferences is a direct link to User:Juhachi/sandbox?-- 00:45, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Turn off the sandbox gadget (It's under My preferences > Gadgets >Appearance > and uncheck "Add a "my sandbox" link to the personal toolbar area."). Once that is done, add the following code to your monobook.js page:
code

// Sandbox link
addOnloadHook( function() {
addPortletLink( 'p-personal', "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Juhachi/sandbox", 'my sandbox', 'pt-sandbox', 'Link to my sandbox', 'A', document.getElementById("pt-preferences"));
});

And that should take you to the 'rendered' page directly, not the 'edit view' verison. (Note: this will not work as expected if you use the secure server - though it is possible to code for that, too.) Avicennasis @ 01:58, 25 Sivan 5772 / 01:58, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AGF / Wikiquette

Does anybody happen to know if the behavioral guidelines say anything about ABF usage of e.g. templates? The situation is, I'm involved in a deletion discussion, and the nominator has imho displayed some behavior that is rather questionable, especially considering he's the nominator. After contacting the user when he started tagging keep !votes as SPAs, I filed for Wikiquette assistance detailing the situation from my point of view, but nobody responded (not even the user although I had notified him of the WQA).

Now, he has tagged the AfD with Not a ballot, in what to me appears as yet another clearcut attempt to poison the well with pre-emptive accusations against those he disagrees with. Isn't such behavior considered borderline uncivil? And how is it in line with AGF to assume, in the absence of any plausible reason to do so, canvassing on the part of users who simply disagree with him and who (that would be the most plausible assumption imho) probably arrived at the AfD via the template at the top of the highly frequented nominated article?

Is this kind of behavior typical and acceptable for established Wikipedians? Any advice is welcome. I have decided against notifying the user about this discussion since he has been completely unresponsive so far, but if you think it would be better to let him know, feel very free to drop him a note. --195.14.222.155 (talk) 11:35, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article for deletion discussions are Not a vote, they are intended to be a discussion of policies, hopefully resulting in an article which meets standards, or the identification of material unsuitable for retention on Wikipedia. When multiple, especially new, editors do not contribute to the discussion beyond Keep or Delete, it is sometimes helpful to prompt them to elaborate as to the how and why. Dru of Id (talk) 15:21, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, thank you, I know how AfD is supposed to work. My usage of "!votes" instead of "votes" should have given it away. Armbrust did not "prompt" anyone to elaborate, quite to the contrary. What he did was to "reply" to reasoned !votes with just an essay shortcut (WP:ITSUSEFUL). After he was subsequently told by multiple established editors (including admins) to stop that, he then resorted to tagging IP comments as SPAs. Again, he did not "prompt" anyone to elaborate further. He simply slapped SPA tags on reasoned comments. And now finally, he has slapped the Not a ballot on the page. Do you, after looking at these diffs, still think his overall behavior in the AfD is acceptable? --195.14.222.155 (talk) 16:04, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That wasn't very clear, GOP. The thing to do is to search for the word(s) you want to be the redirect ("Gooblehausen", say) to see if a page already exists. On the, presumably empty, search-results page, you'll see the line "You may create the page "Gooblehausen", but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered." Click on the red link, and you'll get an edit window in which you can type what GOP indicated. You may also want to add an appropriate template from the "R from . . ." set. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a dictionary, so etymologies are not regularly given (though some articles contain them). However the sister project Wiktionary has "fast", and you can see that it is the basic meaning a word found throughout the Germanic languages. "Fast" meaning "solid, firm" is a different basic word, and the most common modern meaning of "fast" ("rapid") is a development only in English from that second word. --ColinFine (talk) 16:06, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Football / Soccer Prediction League

I currently run a prediction league based on the English Premier League and Championship between myself and 15 friends. We currently use Excel to calculate the tables, results, list fixtures etc... I have been running this for 2 years now and feel although I should start to keep a record of winners, losers, tables etc...

I'd very much like to use Wikipedia for this. I see the way the actual Premier League site has its page and I imagine I would attempt to make it look vaguely similar in the outline, but would like to have my own spin on things. I am not looking to advertise this to other members or companies, the prediction league takes up enough time as it is. But would mearly like somewhere to record the facts and figures of it. I wanted to ask if this is something that would be okay (before I put alot of time and effort in) to post to Wikipedia or would this page be deleted?

List articles in Wikipedia should contain only items that have, or could have, articles of their own in Wikipedia, which in turn depends on the subjects being notable by Wikipedia's criteria. If several independent reliable sources, such as newspapers, have discussed your organisation, then it passes the test for notability, and may have an article: but because of your conflict of interest you should not write the article. See also WP:CORP.
What I recommend you do is first, do a little research to find the sources required to establish that your article is notable. Once you have found them, then go to requested articles, and offer the research you have done (we're much more concerned with what people have written about you than about your own publications or website). Once somebody picks that up and writes an article (which may take a while: we're all volunteers), then you can be added to the list as you requested.
One more point: I'm afraid your username contravenes our username policy, as it promotes an organisation, so that account is likely to get blocked very soon. You should create a new, personal account (it doesn't have to be your real name, but it must not purport to be for an organisation). --ColinFine (talk) 16:15, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It seems this program may have issues. I tried to use it earlier and my anti-virus sent up flags. I tried to un-install and re-download and got more flags. See the talk page of the article at the bottom. I think what it needs is someone that knows computers better than I to find RS and possibly warn readers before downloading it. The general rule at Wikipedia is that articles should only report on information that has already been published in reliable sources such as books, newspapers, respected news websites, and such like. This allows readers to check for themselves that the information is correct by examining the sources. This is one of Wikipedia's core policies. Any editor may challenge and remove information that has no source, so I have removed the "Modesto" statement from the article.
I notice that most of the article is sourced to "S. Hall (interview and personal communication, Fall, 2008)". Since this is an unpublished source, most of the article does not currently meet Wikipedia's standards. Do you have a file of newspaper clippings about yourself? It would be really helpful if you could post details (titles, publication dates, authors) at Talk:Shaunna Hall so that other editors can bring this article up to scratch.

I'm nervous of Template:you have new messages, how can I alter it using my preferences?

Also I'm surprised that Template:you have new messages isn't permently (or even semi) protected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MichaelSchumacherMercedes (talkcontribs)

The new messages banner is not made with Template:you have new messages. The real banner uses the usermessage class for styling and MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessages for the text, where $1 and $2 is filled in by the software. Example of the class styling:
This line has class=usermessage

You can change how the banner is displayed, for example by adding this to Special:MyPage/skin.css to get a less alarming background color:

.usermessage {background-color: lime;}

You can also use a color hex code. See Web colors. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:24, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

line numbers as cited in diffs

How do I find the formatting of an article that shows its line numbers as referred to in diffs? Thanks. Diranakir (talk) 16:30, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you wanted such a display, you'd have to copy and paste the wikitext of the older revision into a word processor or some such (something like Notepad++ is probably easiest, since it numbers the lines automatically). I can't recall anyone actually having needed to do that though - I think most people just go on the context, CTRL-F'ing if necessary. (I'm fairly confident the very presence of a line number in the diff display is just a hangover from the usage of diffs in source code version control, in fact.) - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 17:22, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but the page numbers seem more important than that. They seem to pinpoint exactly where edits have been made. I will wait for the outcome of further deliberations. Thanks again. Diranakir (talk) 21:15, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with Jarry1250: I think the line numbers are just the result of the difference program keeping count, and are not displayed anywhere else. --ColinFine (talk) 10:31, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you use an external editor then you may have line numbers in the wikisource without having to manually copy the source. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:33, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do I report a factual error?

I have come carrots a factual error In the Williamsburg Brooklyn article regarding P.S. 16 the wrong cross streets and picture is used. I went to P.S. 16 and lived across the street from it. There was no talk tab on the article and I do not have a picture of the school to submit. The Address of the school is 157 Wilson street and is surrounded by Bedford ave,Taylor street and Lee ave.

The article lists the school at Leonard and Maujer street which is incorrect and the picture used is also incorrect.

I don't have the capability to edit myself and I can't find a clear method to report it to someone who can. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.84.234.68 (talk) 18:52, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List_of_public_elementary_schools_in_New_York_City agress with you, and says that PS 16 is not in Brooklyn. The talk page you're looking for is at Talk:Williamsburg,_Brooklyn, unless you're referring to a different article. RudolfRed (talk) 19:01, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The building in the picture File:PS 16 Maujer Leonard Sts WB jeh.jpg is actually PS 18 so the file name and file description is false. This error was copied to the image caption at Williamsburg, Brooklyn#Education. The name PS 18 and the street names Maujer and Leonard can be seen in Google Maps.[5] I will correct the errors. Thanks for notifying us. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:19, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all, for taking care of my error so quickly. Being in the audience at a Broadway play at the time, I wasn't tapped in. Since both the Williamsburg article and my picture have their own talk pages, it would have been more direct to put a notice on one or both of those, or on my personal talk page at User_talk:Jim.henderson or Commons:User_talk:Jim.henderson or any combination of the above. As you may gather from discussions already posted there, I snap many pictures in unfamiliar places, hence make mistakes in identification, and need all the help I can get. The difficulty our anonymous helper had in figuring out the right venue suggests our Help system isn't good enough. Hmm, and the helpful anon says both of the streets are incorrect? I'm a bit busy this weekend but will check soon. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:05, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Both street names are correct for the building actually in the photo: PS 18. It is PS 16 which has other streets. We have no photo of PS 16 as far as I know. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:57, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Right. The real PS 16 on Wilson Street bears some architectural resemblance to PS 18, but it is definitely distinct. My photo name and description correctly identify the streets it shows. I only incorrectly identified the PS number. Maybe this Summer I'll get a pic of the real PS 16. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:43, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can an Article's notability prevent it from being merged/deleted?

There has been a discussion about a particular article being merged into another. A majority of users have agreed towards this action and so now I am planning on opening a merger proposal. However there were at least 1-2 users who rejected this idea and said that they still meet WP:BLP1E, WP:N, and WP:BIO1E so the article can never be merged or deleted. I don't really want to propose a merger if its not gonna make a difference. So is it true? 119.224.27.62 (talk) 20:48, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If well sourced, it should probably remain separate; there is nothing precluding them from additional successful collaboration (see Unforgettable... with Love track 22). If sufficient sources have not been included and no one is improving the article, then a merge might be best until well developed enough to justify re-splitting it. Dru of Id (talk) 21:02, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is well-sourced but an additional two articles talking about those involved in the article's topic had also been created and I think that this is too much already. The article is about an ensemble/group that we believe is actually a collaboration of two separate artists. We were thinking about merging this article about the ensemble to the song that they released together (which charted in several countries). Would merging still be appropriate? 119.224.27.62 (talk) 22:24, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, by "no one is improving the article", would that include the fact that the article has remained a 'stub'? Because that is actually the case. So a merger proposal would be appropriate right? Someone please answer :-( 119.224.27.62 (talk) 04:10, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This discussion should probably be on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 04:28, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I know it should be but I just don't want to breach any guidelines regarding mergers. So I want to be sure that I'm aloud to do it even if the two articles are notable.119.224.27.62 (talk) 04:55, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Weird vandalism just moments ago

Was it me or did Wikipedia text transform into hillbilly-speak just a few moments ago? An article I was reading, Glacial period, suddenly started to show up strange words like "feckin'" and "ould" interspersed between normal words. Thinking it was long-standing vandalism, I immediately checked the history only to find out it was never vandalized at all. I started drafting up a report to ANI, and lo and behold, when I reloaded the page, it was gone. The wording was normal again.

Was it a transclusion attack? An incredibly belated April Fool's joke? Someone messing with the software? Because it was way weird. I have no idea if it happened sitewide, but I'd be happy just for a confirmation that it wasn't just my imagination.--203.84.180.42 (talk) 04:58, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds as if you were on Mickopedia. This is their article on glacial period. Gobōnobo + c 05:05, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Page history and visited links all say it was IN the English Wikipedia. I should've taken a screenshot, but at the time I thought it was simple vandalism. Nevertheless, yes, the wording is exactly the same as in Mickopedia's entry. So I can't discount the possibility that I just clicked the wrong google result either. Anyway thanks.--203.84.180.42 (talk) 05:20, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

• The Infobox meta-template supports |image2 and |caption2 parameters for adding support for a second image. Infobox website uses this and makes the second image (a screenshot of the homepage of the website whose article uses this particular infobox) collapsible (collapsed by default). Should Infobox Twitter account also make the second image collapsible? Regards, —{|Retro00064|☎talk|✍contribs|} 07:30, 17 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
• believe it should, which is why I am making this request.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 15:00, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
• I misread. It should not be collapsible. If both image fields are filled in both should appear.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:02, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
• I have added the logo parameters to the infobox, and it appears to be working. See what you think. Note that both image fields now use the format that I see other infoboxes like Infobox website using, where the value supplied to the parameter is in the same format as you would add an image to the article normally, e. g. . I also changed the parameter names to be lowercase, which appears to be the standard format, e. g. | username instead of | Username; feel free to change that back if you so desire.
By the way, is the | logo parameter going to actually be used for a logo, or just a different image to appear above the timeline screenshot? If the latter, then perhaps | logo should be changed to | image and the existing | image parameter changed to | image2 or | screenshot.

Repairing a butchered entry

I am an inexperienced editor, and have tried to edit the page for Lee Smolin to add a view and a new reference. Unfortunately, I appear to have butchered the page, and I do not know how to either fix or undo my edit. I'd requested help on the talk page prior to attempting this edit, but was only advised to "be bold." Bad advice in this case. JCNSmith (talk) 12:43, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, actually, good advice. We learn from mistakes, and other people's mistakes can be teachable moments that allow faster future progress by more people; I make plenty of mistakes myself.
In the References section, you meant to use the Reflist template, but accidently used Relist, omitting the f, which is a Wikipedia:Articles for deletion template. A bot then came along and added reflist, and I've removed the relist. Dru of Id (talk) 13:33, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just for future reference, you can undo or revert your own edits if you need to. Click on the "view history" tab at the top of the page in question, and you will see a list of all the edits to the page, most recent first. Find the offending edit and click "undo" next to your username. This will remove the effect of your edit on the article. You can use this method to undo the edits of others in this way, but you need to give an acceptable rationale (for example, unequivocal vandalism) in your edit summary. You can also revert edits via "view history", by selecting the version of the article you want to return to and then saving the page, again with an explanatory edit summary. For more information, see Wikipedia:Undo and Wikipedia:Reverting. Don't worry about being bold - nothing in Wikipedia is ever lost or permanently broken. Karenjc 15:42, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for these helpful and reassuring words. Unfortunately, I still don't understand what I need to do to add a new reference and have the new reference correctly keyed to the new text which I've added under the heading 'Views' on the Lee Smolin page. Having screwed up once already today, I'm gun shy. The reference I want to add would be (assuming they're to be kept in sequential order) reference 12, and it would simply say, "Smolin, Lee. The Trouble With Physics [in italics]. p. 256."

I find the examples far from clear and/or user friendly, but it's probably just my lack of experience and native skill. JCNSmith (talk) 16:28, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to submit an article.

This topic, to my mind, certainly deserves its own page...

I simply have not submitted an article to wikipedia in a long time and do not wish to run afoul of any of the rules.

I do not know everything about this topic. But I'm certain that once submitted I will be able to find others to help out.

Please help me get through this initial stage...without offending wikipedia rules.

My attempt at the article is here:

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

I realize I do not have all my sources..quoted in detail...but as I said..I'm counting on the help of the wikipedia community to bring this up to speed and I believe that's possible if I can get this approved.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spollen770 (talkcontribs) 18:39, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think there is probably enough to this topic that a good article could be created, but right now the short blurb you've written should probably be expanded prior to submitting it. -Thibbs (talk) 20:56, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
