    Mohammed Zahur Khayaam

    Hello,

Wiki states that the esteemed Indian composer, Mohammed Zahur Khayaam passed away on July 13, 2013 i.e. two days ago. However, I can't find any articles on internet that confirm this sad news. Could you please either confirm that this is indeed correct, or have it removed from Khayaam's page.

Fixed -- I've removed the unsourced death date from the article and cautioned the IP editor not to add unsourced material. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:34, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A wiki affiliated database that is for only certain viewers/users

Hi, I am woefully ignorant on this topic but I saw here a few weeks/months ago something about a business owner asking about a wiki affiliated site that one can limit viewers on, basically run a remote type wiki that I could limit who sees the data submitted, as well as who can edit. Thanks, tried searching this on both the help desk and Reference desk computer archive with no luck yet. Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 03:15, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See the list at Comparison_of_wiki_software#Features_1. The "page access control" feature means you can restrict who can read and write in the wiki. You can dig further into each one of those to find one that suits your needs. RudolfRed (talk) 03:28, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks RudolfRed, let me ask it this way since that was a lot of info, is there a wikipedia related site that counts your edits across the wikipedia platform that limits who may read those edits? I see MediaWiki but it looks like it is a software download type thing. Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 03:59, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Within Wikipedia itself, edits go live when they're saved. The content can't be limited to specific people, else that would defeat the point of an open encyclopaedia; if an editor changed a page, that page would be locked out forever and visible only to a few people on a list. The Wiki software, however, provides the ability to lock pages, but I don't think it can be triggered by a specific editor changing a page; you'd have to manually lock out each page. There may be a workaround for this, but I'm not too versed in that area, so I'm unsure of what to suggest.  drewmunn  talk  08:13, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are asking how you can run your own private (or partly private wiki). If you control a web-server, and are able to install software, then you can install Mediawiki (or other wiki software) and configure it how you like. If not, there are sites like Wikia, where you can create your own wiki within a public site. I don't know what kind of access controls you can put on those, though. --ColinFine (talk) 08:56, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the info, as I mentioned I am woefully ignorant on that so I will continue to look in the archives but I think the answer to that one back then was one of the "wikis" that wasn't part of wikipedia's platform. Much appreciation for all the help, this can be marked resolved! Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 13:55, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Need to correct/update the article on Bakarkhani

    Hello Wikipedia

I came across the article on Bakarkhani (Baqerkhani), a kind of bread. I find that the article does not inform correctly and has filled up the page by repeating information, which was a disappointment. Adding to that that article was not well researched and has informed about the item from one perspective only. In the later sections the article has been filled with repetitions and without any mention of the types and process of making. This Bread was brought into Indian/ Bengali cuisine via Muslim influence, which obviously has been modified according to the availability of local ingredients. These breads are mostly round, spicy, with hard crusts and almost like biscuits in texture. The bread, Bakar Khani Roti translated as Bakar Khan's Bread (where Roti is the generic name for Indian Breads),the then Governor of Bengal, in pre-independance India. It is made of flour, ghee, water, molasses with soaked saffron, poppy or nigella seeds, sugar and salt. It later baked either on a girdle or an oven. It is cooked extensively in Dacca/ Dhaka and stays fresh for a good while. They compliment the Kebab and Korma, which along with many different types of bread like Naan(leavened Bread), Roomali (Bread fine and soft as a Handkerchief), Paratha(Spiced, or filled dough fried in ghee or butter), were brought in by the Muslim rulers. There are types and additions to this basic recipe, where many different types of ingredients are added to make the bread spicier or tastier.

I cannot comment about the legend, that goes with it. The types of bread given by the author has not been elaborated upon and this article needs to be researched more.

    Thank you

Regards Bigjala — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bigjala (talkcontribs) 04:20, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Bigjala, thanks for bringing this to our attention, however if you have WP:RELIABLESOURCES you can choose to be WP:BOLD and offer constructive edits and additions to the article. You may also wish to start a discussion on that article's talk page on your concerns for accuracy or even the wikiprojects covering that topic to involve editors who have greater expertise on the exact issues (WikiProject India may have someone who can directly assist). Given the specificity of the topic and your concerns those may be the most efficient routes. Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 04:26, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The article is a mess. Some whole sections are repeated, and it uses bold-face in non-standard ways. It badly needs editing by someone familiar with Wikipedia practise. I would do it myself, but I know nothing about its subject matter. Maproom (talk) 08:06, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Reversal of text

So, I made this seemingly innocuous change ([1]), which resulted in this mess ([2]).

Can someone please explain what happened to me? A412 (TalkC) 05:32, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When a browser sees Arabic text it has to guess how much of the following text is to be displayed right-to-left. By default, digits and braces don't trigger the switch back to left-to-right, so the birth/death dates were displayed "backwards". I've added a Left-to-right mark so that the browser gets a much clearer signal. -- John of Reading (talk) 05:50, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for fixing it! A412 (TalkC) 05:52, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Locally uploading files above 100 MB to English Wikipedia

How do you locally upload a file over 100 MB to the English Wikipedia? WhisperToMe (talk) 07:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to this it can't be done. 100MB is the limit. Or have I misread your question? Dismas|(talk) 07:25, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There was a trick around the 100MB limit that was available on the Commons. I think it involved the files being uploaded in pieces instead of being done all at once. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:29, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2011/11#100_MB_size_limit talks about it a bit - I want to know if I can do that here too WhisperToMe (talk) 07:33, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I should probably look this up before replying but can you upload 100+MB files on Commons? Just going off the link you provided, there were technical hurdles that had not yet been sorted out. It doesn't mention a working method to surpass 100MB, just proposes a theoretical method. Dismas|(talk) 08:00, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Theoretically, you could upload a file of any size (up to the limit of free space on the server), but the upload limit set on the server seems to be 100MB. This isn't something within the Wiki software necessarily, so there's not likely to be a practical workaround. Splitting the file would resolve the issue cross-limit (both server and Wiki), but reassembling it is likely to cause issues within the software, and I doubt a bit-file would stand up to scrutiny.  drewmunn  talk  08:08, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think I set an option on Commons which split up the upload, so I was technically able to upload files over 100 MB WhisperToMe (talk) 15:45, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why is the file so big? (Depending on the type of data there may be a more efficient format.) RJFJR (talk) 14:43, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It may be so big because of the conversion process. I converted it from WMV to OGV. The WMV was 46.9 MB but when I converted it to OGV it was 114 MB. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:44, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just follow the instructions at commons:Help:Server-side upload. Theopolisme (talk) 16:26, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I need help from someone else to make a new article

Good morning. I want to grab a little help if someone is free; I have been reading through an article on here, and one of the important people in it doesn't have an article here yet. I know a little about him but I think it needs someone with more expertise to make the article. The article would be about a Veterinary surgeon called Gathorne Robert Girdlestone, who first described and used a salvage procedure to rescue the hip joints of an animal with a damaged Femoral Head and/or Femoral Neck. Is there somewhere on here I can ask other people to make the article or to help with it, please? Thank you. Bashir-ibn-john (talk) 10:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    There is Wikipedia:Requested articles though that has a bit of a backlog. Dismas|(talk) 10:39, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Veterinary medicine might be a good place to ask for collaborators. --ColinFine (talk) 13:10, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All Articles on a Specific Subject

Is there a way to access a complete listing of all articles on a subject without having to "travel" from subcategory to subcategory to subcategory, only to find duplicate articles?? 150.198.1.211 (talk) 11:27, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You could check whether there is an outline or index related to the topic. Portal:Contents/Outlines and Portal:Contents/Indexes list outlines and indexes by topic. Whether there is an index or outline depends on how broad the subject is. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 11:41, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Minerva

I am having trouble adding and citing (myself) as a donor for the roman statue of Minerva located in your article in Chester, UK. How do I do this or can I submit it to you for uploading and referencing myself as the source? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gregsiero (talkcontribs) 12:36, 16 July 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Greg. I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you saying you are the donor of something to Wikipedia? or that you were the donor of the statue to Chester? I thought you must be talking about a photo, but there isn't a photo of the shrine to Minerva (nor a mention of a statue of Minerva) in the article Chester. Or are you talking about a different article. Sorry, I think you'll have to be clearer about what you want. --ColinFine (talk) 13:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Are you referring to the article Chester? I don't see mention of a statue there, only of Minerva's Shrine, Chester. And a city article wouldn't usually mention a donor of a statue. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:19, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Request for re-review of article

Hello. I would like to respectfully request a re-review of the article:Articles for creation/Common Career Technical Core (CCTC). The person who reviewed it said it appeared to be advertisement; however, I included a number of outside sources to validate the information in the article. I also patterned the article after 2 existing Wikipedia articles: Next Generation Science Standards Common Core State Standards Since the page I created is for a set of educational standards that are now commonly recommended for Career Technical Education instructors, I used the existing Wikipedia pages about educational standards as my guide. I believe what I have created is in line with the existing pages, and I'm having trouble understanding why mine was declined as advertisement when the other two were accepted.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks! MelindaatNASDCTEc

    Request for review

Hello. About a month ago, I submitted the page Articles for creation/National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) for review. I received a note from a reviewer that they were concerned that some of the content might be copied. I edited the content to alleviate any concerns with plagiarism, and I resubmitted the article for review. I've never received any response, though, and now the article shows that it is not under review at all. Any recommendations? Do I need to resubmit the article for review again?

    Thanks!

One problem with Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) was that you had an unterminated <ref>, which caused the remainder of the page to be invisible and ignored. I don't see the problem or why this was brought to the Wikipedia Help Desk. There was a minor dispute about language, which was resolved with more neutral language. Plus, you're essentially asking the Help Desk to protect your POV on the issue: "This is serious ... it seems to be people against the McCann's". I'm not even sure which edits you're offended by. On the Facebook page you seem offended by SlimVirgin's use of "false" to describe the allegations against the McCanns. But the use of "false" actually is in FAVOR of the McCanns a la "they were falsely accused". Or are you offended by the removal of "false"? I think this is a reading comprehension issue. If you choose to reply with more information, please only include info relevant to understanding your complaint. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:40, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
SlimVirgin has suggested to me that this might be a user warning of an external agenda to push POV on the article. I think that would be my reading comp fail. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:20, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Hi, I believe the answer might be buried in all the text of the rejection template. It looks to me like your draft article does not actually describe what makes your company notable for inclusion in the encyclopedia (see WP:CORP for specific guidelines). Therefore, as wikipedia is not a business directory, it may look like your article is being submitted purely to advertise the business. If you follow the guidelines I linked above and provide appropriate sources to prove notability in your article then it will have a much better chance of being accepted. Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information. What IE version and why do you think it cannot do it? Do you see "Edit links" under the languages? I have done it. The English category already had its own entry at wikidata:Q8630350. Why am I listed as active on French Wikipedia?

I checked my preferences for the first time in a long time, and noticed I'm "active on 2 project sites". I clicked the "global info" button, and it lists fr.wikipedia.org along with en and (correctly) notes I've made no edits there.

It also says I registered on April 11, 2013. I haven't registered for anything with the word "wiki" in it since February 2006. Is it normal to be autoregistered, or do I have a problem? Something else, maybe? InedibleHulk (talk) 11:16, July 17, 2013 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I can read enough French to get the gist of things, but not enough to write it, speak it or understand it spoken. So I'd rather not be there, if possible. InedibleHulk (talk) 11:18, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
Wikimedia projects have unified login. If you visit another project when you are logged in then your account is automatically created there. Special:CentralAuth/InedibleHulk shows you must have done that 22 April. "active" only means the account has been created. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:30, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) This seems to be a strange one - either you went on the French Wikipedia when logged it to Wikipedia, or some other SUL thing has happened. WP:VPT may know more. Mdann52 (talk) 12:33, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's possible you altered a file that's hosted on the French Wikipedia and pulled over to here from there, or that you otherwise strayed accidentally without realising it. It's nothing to worry about, but you may wish to head over there and put a redirect on your user talk to direct potential discussions to your English page.  drewmunn  talk  12:38, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That seems the only conceivable explanation. I can't remember ever visiting French Wikipedia, but I have worked with some images, possibly around April 22, which may have been used there. Thanks! InedibleHulk (talk) 21:38, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
It is not a big deal. I have numerous active accounts in languages I don't speak at all (mostly from fixing interwiki links and photos). It is not like you are require to keep an active participation at each site. Rmhermen (talk) 12:47, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When you haven't edited at the French Wikipedia there is no reason to make a link to your English account. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:14, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, Rmhermen, not a big deal to me, either. Just slightly odd and confusing, at first. And no, PrimeHunter, I don't intend on linking. Pointless, indeed. InedibleHulk (talk) 21:37, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
Note that when articles are transwikied to another language as this one was, the contributions from the English Wikipedia will show up in the history for attribution (as it is as here you can see contributions by long term en editors whom are not active on de). While this case is unrelated to you InedibleHulk, you may find that you have contributions to anther language Wikipedia that you have never edited (although you have no contributions on fr). While this doesn't apply to you on the French Wikipedia, it does for example in German. --kelapstick(bainuu) 22:26, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a box or table that doesn't have an edit button.

On the right of the Wiki entry that I am working on is a box with a photograph and biographical information about the person of interest. How can that box be edited? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rebassistant (talkcontribs) 18:09, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From the main 'Edit' tab along the top. Dru of Id (talk) 18:15, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The section is an 'Infobox' which a template produces, starting from a double braces {{ and ending with them }}. The template will only recognise previously defined fields. Dru of Id (talk) 18:18, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Preferences/ Gadgets/ Appearance includes an option to include an edit link for the lead section. Even without that option, the Edit tab at the top of the page allows you to edit the whole page, including the infobox to which you refer. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:18, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to be referring to the article Reb Anderson. You can edit the box by either clicking Edit or Edit source at the page. If you click Edit source, you should see some markup like this:
    {{Infobox religious biography
    |background =
    |name =
    }}
There you can edit the infobox by editing this code.
You can also edit it by clicking Edit. In that case, simply click on the infobox after clicking Edit. A small icon that looks like a puzzle piece should appear. Click on it to edit the info in the box. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:31, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is an appropriate fair use right?

This image from this page on the BBC website for the article Nightmare in Silver? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 18:15, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If it was reduced in size, a non-free rationale template completed for that article and tagged with {{Non-free title-card}}, it would comply with WP:NFCC.--ukexpat (talk) 18:30, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is inappropriate. Some images like that have been discussed at WP:NFCR (see for example Wikipedia:Non-free content review/Archive 21#Star Trek: Voyager episode images). Such screenshots are usually only appropriate if there is sourced discussion about the specific image, which is implicitly necessary for satisfying WP:NFCC#8. So while this might be appropriate under fair use, it is likely not compliant with NFCC#8. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:41, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Without it we are forced to direct users to a different article Cybermen to see the newer incarnation of the 2013 Cybermen, which will undoubtedly change again next series in some way or another. That article will eventually change to the newer image also, which means the reader is disadvantaged. I uploaded it as File:Doctor Who Nightmare In Silver Wallpaper.jpg.
With so many articles on episodes for multiple shows and films having a Fair Use image this is certainly up there with a good reasoning i believe. What do you think? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 18:53, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
With all due respect, this is not an "episode image", it is a "title card" and we have hundreds if not thousands of articles where title cards are used pursuant to WP:NFCC without a problem, and as I mentioned above we even have a specific template for such use.--ukexpat (talk) 19:03, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have not placed it in the article after seeing the message by Toshio above. Have i tagged the image correctly UKexpat? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 19:09, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it to File:Doctor Who Nightmare In Silver title card.jpg which is a more accurate title and tweaked the info page. However, a non-free image must be used in an article - orphaned non-free images will be deleted.--ukexpat (talk) 19:18, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    I have added it.--ukexpat (talk) 19:22, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. What did you mean by "However, a non-free image must be used in an article". I thought non-free images were to be avoided if a free version was available? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 19:23, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Ukexpat Mea culpa. I admit I haven't looked carefully enough at the image, as I became distracted off-Wiki. My apologies. That use is probably okay, as Ukexpat pointed out above, as it is like cover art of a CD, where such images usually can be used. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 19:27, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Jenova See WP:NFCC#7. It is used in an article now, so that is no longer an issue. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 19:27, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes free images are preferred, but the only basis on which a non-free image can be uploaded is if it is used in an article - unused, non-free images are not permitted.--ukexpat (talk) 19:41, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know that bit, I just suffered a momentary lapse of brainpower with the phrasing and the heat. Thanks a lot for the help Ukexpat Jenova20 (email) 08:54, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help! Another editor is threatening to block me over a good faith edit.

I made an edit to Noah (movie), noting that Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly who are playing husband and wife had also played husband and wife in A Beautiful Mind (and Connelly won an Academy Award). User:Elizium23 said, despite the fact that the information was right there on those two wiki pages (in the Cast lists), that not only was this unsourced but if it happened again, I would be blocked. I have made hundreds of edits on Wikipedia and never been threatened like this before. And it was our first encounter.

I looked at his Talk Page archive and there were a lot of unhappy people responding to similar blocking threats. Unfortunately, all of them were now red-link accounts, showing that they had deactivated their accounts.

It's absurd threats like this (I'm not even sure whether User:Elizium23 is an admin or not) which cause people to abandon their efforts to improve Wikipedia.

I have no way of finding where to file a complaint so I just came here and maybe I can get an neutral third party to stop these hasty and drastic threats. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 18:38, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you attempted to discuss this with the other editor? In any event, sourced or not I don't think your edit is encyclopedic. It smacks to me of movie trivia.--ukexpat (talk) 18:40, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I concur that the information is completely irrelevant to the article. More to the point, we do not use other Wikipedia pages as sources for articles, so Elizium was in the right on that matter. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:44, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I see on a lot of other pages that when certain actors and directors work together (Scorsese & DeNiro, Del Toro & Perlman, etc.) that this fact is noted on their articles. How could the cast list that is posted on Noah be considered an unreliable source...or who has been cast in the movie? And A Beautiful Mind is a 12 year old film, that Jennifer Connelly won an Academy Award for...this is all on the Wikipedia page that has been worked on for over a decade. I can't refer to the page itself for having accurate information?
But even if you think this is trivial, that was not User:Elizium23's complaint...his complaint was that this fact didn't have adequate citation. My question is what else is required?
But regardless of how you view this edit, should a well-intentioned addition merit the threat of a block? That's what bothers me more. I've had very constructive conversations with other editors to improve an article. But I've never been threatened (and in our first encounter). I don't know whether he is an admin or not, but I don't this is assuming good faith in other editors and it just seems like the result of the threats have been editors deactivating their accounts. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 18:55, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The first thing to do in a case like this is to discuss with the other editor. Have you done that? If not, you should.--ukexpat (talk) 18:58, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've pointed User:Elizium23 to this discussion and asked why they used a template threatening blocking on a good-faith editor. --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 19:03, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty obvious -- this IP editor has been warned several times already for similar actions. A warning that continuing the same behavior will eventually lead to a block is entirely appropriate. Looie496 (talk) 19:05, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. They've been warned for adding unsourced content to a BLP, deleting something without explaining in an edit summary, linking to YouTube, and adding poorly-understood content. And in a recent thread they're reading unpleasantness into comments where there is none. None of that is exactly what they're being warned for here. But, given all that, fair enough. IP, be more careful and support any changes you make with reliable sources. --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 19:36, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)This is just a guess here but the user may have seen all the other editors on your talk page who had reverted your edits and just used a higher level warning template. (That warning is a standard template, by the way). Dismas|(talk) 19:10, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OP, just to address your specific question: no, Wikipedia cannot be regarded as a reliable source by definition, regardless of how long the article in question has been under development. See WP:RS for the definition of reliable sources. - Karenjc 21:16, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, regarding "Unfortunately, all of them were now red-link accounts, showing that they had deactivated their accounts", that is incorrect. Red links to the name of a registered editor shows that an editor hasn't created a user page, typical of brand new or novice editors; red links to a user talk page (rarer) show that there is no talk page for that editor, either. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 22:19, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have retracted the warning per WP:AGF and his claim here that he was never threatened before. I took that to mean he has never been warned, perhaps he inherited his IP address from a more disruptive contributor. Elizium23 (talk) 05:38, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Printing articles about mathematics

What is the best way to print mathematical articles? Formulas often appear in a graphic-like format that is difficult to printed properly, at least from my browser (IE 10, Windows 7). There are two problems:

    (1) The text comes out in gray scale with inexact borders. Small symbols, like subscripts, have broken, fuzzy shapes that are difficult to read.

    (2) More serious, a plus sign can print as a minus sign. The problem goes away if you use the IE print dialog to change the DPI setting to 1200 from the default of 600, but this is hardly an obvious thing to do.

Example: Print the article "Goodstein's theorem". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dsewsi (talkcontribs) 19:08, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    John Langdon

My Wikipedia page is: John Langdon (typographer)

My web assistant and I added quite a bit of new text a couple of months ago, and tried a couple of times to load several images to illustrate information covered in the text. Last time, we thought we were successful, but a couple of days later the images were no longer on my page.

I am an artist. It's important to me to have images of my work on my Wikipedia page. All the images I want to load are ones that I hold the copyrights for.

Neither my web assistant or I can figure out what the problem is. We believe we have followed all the guidelines and instructions. Can you help?

Thanks, John Langdon JohnLangdon (talk) 22:44, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to use copyrighted images that you hold the rights to, you can follow the guidance at WP:IOWN to licence the images in a way that is allowable at Wikipedia. Also, you and your assistant should make sure to read WP:COI and WP:AUTO for guidance on editing this article. RudolfRed (talk) 23:04, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) It appears from the messages on your user talk page that the images were loaded under a non-free use licence, claiming a fair use exemption. As shown in those messages, Wikipedia has tight restrictions on the use of non-free material. To avoid that problem, the material would need to be given a free licence, by the process described under donating copyrighted material.
Even then, it is possible that other editors might consider that the use of the images would be excessive. In your question above you say "I am an artist. It's important to me to have images of my work on my Wikipedia page". It might therefore be thought that you are trying to use the Wikipedia page for advertising or self-promotion. I would therefore recommend that you read Wikipedia's guidance on autobiography, and on conflict of interest. - David Biddulph (talk) 23:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I ripped the new one from your website and replaced it at File:Cbcfremantle crest.png. The website doesn't have a higher resolution one though. Have the graphics department provide one online in better resolution and we can use that. If you wish to keep copyright then we can only upload locally at about 300px wide max. The above file on commons probably violates any copyright you have on the logo. See: commons:Commons:Fair use and Wikipedia:Non-free content. Fair use and non-free mean about the same.--Canoe1967 (talk) 02:56, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The file on Commons is a copyright violation and I have tagged it for deletion as such. Please follow the process set out at WP:IOWN to communicate permission to use, but note that permission must be for all purposes. Permission restricted to use only on Wikipedia is insufficient. If you are not prepared to release it on that basis, it can be uploaded to Wikipedia pursuant to the non-free content criteria, but it will have to be low-res.--ukexpat (talk) 13:28, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My best advice is to just use regular editing and wait a month or 20 until VE's many problems are fixed and lack of features is remedied. See Help:Table for information on playing with tables. Note that it says at WP:VE that "The content of some "complex" formatting, including tables and definition lists, will display and can be edited, but editors using VE cannot modify the structures or add new entries, such as an additional row for a table."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:41, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Having problems adding a wikilink (may have found a bug in the timeline code)

So I was trying to fix a link on Devil May Cry on the timeline under "Gameplay".

    Link to edit source

It's the last entry on the timeline (2013: DmC) that's giving me problems. No matter what I do, I can't get it to link. Even stranger, when I take off the "|DmC" and leave just the page's name, which is DmC: Devil May Cry, on the timeline it ignores the "DmC: " and just leaves the text as "Devil May Cry". I would have guessed that the code "DmC: " has special meaning on wiki code but I can link to it just fine normally (link should be working here for example.) It's just on the timeline where it goofs up.

    --DeeBoFour20 (talk) 06:05, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The <timeline> code indeed doesn't like the "DmC:" and apparently wrongly considers it a prefix. Sounds like a bug to me. As a workaround I've linked to [[:DmC: Devil May Cry|DmC]] with an additional colon at the beginning. It looks strange but links to the correct article, and the pipe hides the crutch from a cursory glance. Huon (talk) 06:26, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alleged malware link in the Laurie Penny article

User:Gary Dee has removed a link from the article on the British journalist Laurie Penny claiming (at Talk:Laurie Penny#Malware Link Removal) that a link is to malware. The hypersensitive malware-checking gubbins in use here, which normally blocks between 5% and 10% of links that I click on when checking AfC submission sources, allows me to visit the URL in question without even so much as popping up a warning. So I think there is no malware problem. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 10:13, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Second Possibility to check it (on a far more undeep level) are these links:

To keep it short: If someone will click the link from Johnhuntpublishing-Link at www.zero-books.net, in case he has no Security Software, or an updated OS, could be harmed by infection. All in all, as a threat like this is being detected, there is a no-go, for having links like this in a Wikipedia-article; evidence enough for removing those links once more. --Gary Dee 16:15, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Removing a url as malware is defensible. Removing an entire citation because a url (website) is possibly compromised is not acceptable. The url can be hidden with wikicode, or possibly a link at archive.org can be substituted, but it's unacceptable to simply remove an entire cite because one part is problematical. (I see another editor has put all of the citation back into the article except the url; better, though not best.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 04:11, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Germaine Greer

I am not and have never claimed to be a Professor Emerita of Warwick University. Please remove this untrue statement from my Wikipedia entry.

This may easily be verified by contacting the university.

This is not the first time I have tried to correct this error. I am tired of removing it from promotion materials etc.

    Please do as I ask.

    Thankyou,

Germaine Greer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.68.117.40 (talk) 11:08, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removed. I can find no support for the statement at [4] etc. Maproom (talk) 11:23, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Might I ask, no disrespect intended, if you normally remove information from somebody's article without proof that the person addressing you is who they really claim to be? As a new user, I purely ask to find out if you have to do this first, then enquire, or if you have a way to verify without editors knowing. Thank you. Bashir-ibn-john (talk) 12:18, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Don't mean to butt in but I thought I'd try to help (though helping others has been burning me lately). Anyway, we don't always just take their word for it. It appears that User:Maproom couldn't find any support for the item and therefore removed it. Per WP:BLP:
"All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be explicitly attributed to a reliable, published source, which is usually done with an inline citation. Contentious material about living persons (or in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion."
Indeed. The point is that the statement was unsourced and was challenged. The identity of the challenger is irrelevant. Gandalf61 (talk) 12:30, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So, Maproom was correct in removing it. Dismas|(talk) 12:24, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It would have been wrong of me to assume that 77.68.117.40 is in fact Germaine Greer (and I have no way of checking). In any case, the subject of an article has no veto over its contents. But it was easy to check the truth of the disputed statement – Warwick University, like most universities, has a web site which lists its academic staff. As I said above, I failed to find Germaine Greer on that list. Maproom (talk) 12:50, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:BIOSELF there is a process (via WP:OTRS) for the subject of an article to identify themselves to the Foundation, but as noted above, in a case like this where a statement in a BLP is challenged, confirmation of the identity of the challenger isn't necessary.--ukexpat (talk) 13:34, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Google search Germaine Greer Professor Emerita University of Warwick finds many reliable sources saying Germaine Greer is Professor Emerita at University of Warwick. The first is http://edition.cnn.com/2013/03/12/opinion/greer-women-and-guilt which is an article written by Germaine Greer herself! In all fairness, the Professor Emerita claim is in an Editor's note at the start, but if you are Germaine Greer then I suggest you also ask CNN to remove the claim. Normally that article alone would be a sufficient source for Wikipedia, and there are many others. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:33, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The passage you refer to reads "Editor's note: Germaine Greer, an Australian academic and journalist, is the author of "The Female Eunuch," "Sex and Destiny," "The Change," "Shakespeare's Wife" and "The Whole Woman." She is professor emerita of English literature and comparative studies at the University of Warwick in England." It was not written by Ms. Greer, but by a CNN editor; and was probably copied from the Wikipedia article. If Wikipedia itself does not qualify as a reliable source, I think a CNN reporter copying a section of it doesn't either. Maproom (talk) 18:55, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Wikipedia has the problem now that much of the non-Wikipedia world uses Wikipedia as a source. If we stuff it up, the error will be copied by others. HiLo48 (talk) 19:17, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As my Google search shows, the claim is in many reliable sources. I doubt CNN copied it from Wikipedia. It was added to Wikipedia 14 August 2008.[5] http://www.shakespearelaw.org/ is the official website of a conference hosted by the University of Warwick itself in July 2007. The front page links to Conference programme and Abstracts and Speakers. Both are from the time of the conference and say "Germaine Greer, Emeritus Professor of English and Comparative Studies at Warwick University". This claim is in so many reliable sources, including an official source, that it may be time we ask 77.68.117.40 to either contact WP:OTRS or refer to a public statement in a reliable source saying it's untrue. The latter could also be used to convince people outside Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:50, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has linked them.[6] I see "Edit links" at Gare de Port-Saint-Père-Saint-Mars#p-lang in IE9, also with compatibility mode enabled. There have been problems with IE8 previously (bugzilla:44228) but I thought it was supposed to work now. What is your skin at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? Does it look like you can edit wikidata:Q3097322? Do you have compatibility mode enabled to mimic IE7? It's indicated by a blue broken page icon in the address bar. Class Size Re-Direct

    To whom it may concern,

I write this message to request a redirect change. As it stands, when I type in "class size," it redirects me to student-teacher ratio which is a completely different thing in the realm of education (while still very much related). If at all possible, could "class size" instead be redirected to the "class size reduction" Wikipedia entry?

If you're asking here for us to overrule the opinion of two other editors who think the redirect should go to student-teacher ratio, sorry, that's not going to happen. The student-teacher ratio article mentions "class size" in the first caption and "smaller classes" in the second paragraph, so it's not obvious that the current redirect (as set out by the other editors) is wrong. In any case, if you want to get the redirect to be as you propose, you need to post at Talk:Student–teacher ratio, and see if you can get the majority of other editors to agree with your view that the redirect should not go to that article. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 04:04, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Article Suitability

I'm composing a candidate article on a particular type of "failure mode and effect analysis" (relevant to reliability engineering) and I want to (1) clarify a possible conflict of interest, and (2) address listing my own work as a citation. ("Failure Mode and Effects Analysis" is a current Wikipedia article.)

Although I decided to write the article and did so on my own, I have a particular interest in the topic because I've worked with it for my current employer and we do the kind of analysis that is the topic of the article. Unfortunately, there are very few published references on this topic (a text cited in "Further Reading" is one of the few) and one of the key references cited in the article is a paper that I wrote on the topic. This paper was peer reviewed and published by one outside organization (and thereafter published in Proceedings of the 2008 Reliability and Maintainability Symposium, www.rams.org). The published paper was essentially reprinted by a second organization that solicited my permission to do so (it was published in Journal of System Safety). Therefore, while I have tried to make the article as factual as possible, some of the article's statements reflect my own engineering judgment based on part-time research on the topic for at least 10 years. The intent of the article is to present facts that would be useful for anyone attempting to perform the subject analysis, and to alert readers to recognize where their own engineering judgment may be required. Question is, how to proceed? Thanks. Bentpins (talk) 15:48, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Bentpins: That there are very few published articles on the topic means that it most likely fails to meet our requirements for a separate article. It sounds to me as if you should - at most - add a section to the existing article, Failure mode and effects analysis. And you should limit what you add to information that is contained in those articles. If you know something personally, but it's not published, it is not acceptable to be in a Wikipedia article because it fails our Verifiability policy. (And we classify it as original research, somethin also not acceptable.) Finally, keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, with the goal of providing overviews of information. Per yet another policy (yes, there are a lot), Wikipedia is not, for example, a guide or a how-to manual. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 01:57, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the color of a country on a map

The article Sub-Saharan Africa lists South Sudan as being in North Africa, but the UN classifies the country as being in East Africa. How do I change the color of South Sudan on the Map? 108.0.244.168 (talk) 19:41, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, there are no facilities within Wikipedia for editing graphics. You (or somebody) will have to edit the image file outside Wikipedia, and reupload it. I suggest you ask at the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop. --ColinFine (talk) 19:50, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have the skills to make the change, but I am not totally clear about what you want. I think you are talking about the first map in the Sub-Saharan Africa article, and you want South Sudan switched from mid-green to dark green. Is that right? Maproom (talk) 22:32, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That must be it, and the description should also be updated. The source is http://unstats.un.org/unsd/methods/m49/m49regin.htm at the United Nations. commons:File:Sub-Saharan Africa definition UN.png is currently based on the 20 September 2011 version of the UN page which was still displayed 8 October 2012 [7] and listed South Sudan under "Northern Africa". The current UN page has South Sudan under "Eastern Africa". All other Eastern Africa countries in the map are dark green. Western and Southern Africa are also dark green. The UN page says: "The designation sub-Saharan Africa is commonly used to indicate all of Africa except northern Africa, with the Sudan included in sub-Saharan Africa." So today it's only Sudan and not South Sudan which is an exception. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:28, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    PRstore Wikipedia Entry

    PRstore (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

The original PRstore content for Wikipedia submitted by Scott Hepburn with references has been deleted. In its place are three terse negative entries about the company and its principals, including myself. I attempted to expand on this text through the editing process to provide additional history and context but this revised entry was deleted and "reverted" to the original negative text only. This is not right. We should be able to provide additional historical detail and context and not simply have the company portrayed with these three negative posts which were obviously posted by "haters." This is neither accurate nor fair. We want to be able to edit the text and have our edits accepted. Please let me know how we can make this right. Thank you for your assistance. Mike Butler, Founder, PRstore — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.199.128.162 (talk) 21:54, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most of your changes have been made without any explanation or comment, and many of them have been unexplained removal of material: this tends to ring the "vandalism" bell for many people; making the same changes again without discussing them on the talk page is also likely to be seen as disruptive editing.
As far as I can see, the material you removed about the legal affairs were referenced to what appear to be reliable sources. This again makes removing them without explanation look like disruptive behaviour. When you added information to those sections, it was without references, and somebody very properly removed it.
What you need to do is
    • First, and most importantly, read our policy on conflict of interest, and understand why it is a very bad idea for you to be editing the article at all,.
    • Then, if there are things that you would like changed in the article, put your suggestions, with supporting citations to reliable independent sources, on the article's talk page Talk:PRstore, for uninvolved editors to consider them and edit the article. If it is the case that the information about legal process is incomplete or out of date, then Wikipedia would very much like it to be corrected or brought up to date - with solid citations. Please work within our processes and policies to make this happen. --ColinFine (talk) 22:19, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You should also be aware that the article is now being watched by impartial editors. Further attempts to delete well-referenced criticism of the company, or to use the article for promotional purposes, will be reverted. Maproom (talk) 22:42, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a picture to the blue box

It would help if you told us the particular article you are here about but I think maybe you are talking about an infobox (which come in a rainbow of colors, not just blue). Do you mean, for example, a box like the one seen near the top right hand side of Hadji Ali? If so, the way it is done actually varies depending on which infobox the article uses, but for most, you add to the code of the infobox template: | image = followed by the actual name of the image you want to use, e.g. name of image.jpg
That is, click "edit source" at the top of the page, then look for code that is like what I am posting below, and insert the image code (shown in green):
    {{Infobox person
    | name = Name
    | image = name of image.jpg
    etc.
    }}
Of course, you first have to locate a suitable image. That's a whole other topic, but note that we have a sister project, called the Wikimedia Commons with millions of images that can be used here natively. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:58, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This Monday my son who is in the Harris county jail in Houston, Texas was appointed to represent him self in his trial because the appointed lawyer on his case had not in 21months given hin or talked to him about his case he had not seen any evidence in his case or even talked to him about anything around his case so the judge let my son fire the attorney and told the DA he had two weeks to get all boxes of evidence to where my son could go thru discoveries and evidence and today 07-18-13 four guards came to his cell and got his defense papers and would not say who ordered them to do this one of the guards said in the 20 years he had been there this had never happened and he was just following orders. My son Kelvin O'Brien told them that what they were doing was illegal and it was a felony to take his defense papers and read them we thank the DA was mad and ordered this done. The papers they took would show he was innocence in court . I'm going to report this to the judge that told the DA to get my son all evidence he had in two weeks. He's been there 22months and his trial has been put off 4times. Is there some legal route we can go to precut my sons rights.

this DA is so corrupt there's so many illegal things he's pulled too many to list here he needs to be investigated he thinks he rules that county and no one can touch him. I hope and pray that there's someway you can help thank you I hope this gets to the right people — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.147.123.145 (talk) 03:08, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
