New article with same title as existing article

Hi, I want to write an article on Nicholas Royle a Professor at the University of Sussex and author of a novel, Quilt. He's written 11 books (including co-authoring an influential textbook) and published dozens of articles. He is different than the Nicholas Royle who already has a page on wikipedia (also a university teacher and novelist). I have recently edited the Nicholas Royle page to have the correct birth place and date (as it used to have the birthdate and place of the Nicholas Royle for whom a page is needed). In any case, the Nicholas Royles are very used to getting mistaken for one another-- even the Library of Congress has mixed them up. But it is important their work is kept separate so I would like to create a page for Nicholas Royle but am not sure how to start it if it has the same title as another article and who will take care of making sure the pages are disambiguated. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Florencewhimbrel (talkcontribs) 04:02, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are several acceptable solutions, see [1] for some examples. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:13, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Narenderwp: Of all of the things that are listed as problems with the article, the most serious is that the references do not establish that this is a notable concept. The article should have references to several articles written by journalists or other authors not connected with Gautam Mahajan to show that the concept is well known. The references provided are an article that is about Mr. Mahajan but not about the topic, a document written by Mr. Mahajan, and an article that doesn't say on the web page who wrote it. If this is not addressed, the article could be deleted at any time. —Anne Delong (talk) 05:06, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow editors! The above article is in Articles for creation space, although it has never been submitted. It seems to me that this isn't and likely could never be an article, and may be dangerous if people see it and decide to take it as medical advice. Is there some policy that covers this? —Anne Delong (talk) 04:41, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware of a policy that specifically deals with this. There is WP:Medical, but that is more about giving individualized advice. Regardless of whether there is a policy that demands its immediate deletion, I've nominated it for deletion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Common diseases and their treatment as I agree it should not be sitting around with unsourced medical information. This box thing

On my userpage, I have added a template of some of the articles I have created. But the template is arranged horizontally, and I want it to display vertically, as it does on User:Ombudsman, where I copied and pasted the template from. Can someone tell me how to get it to do that? Jinkinson (talk) 14:28, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you go back to the table you copied from, you'll see that there is a
    |-
    to give a new row in a table. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:36, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah thanks, but it turns out while you were posting that I figured it out by myself. Thanks anyway Jinkinson (talk) 14:44, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you fathomed it out. I think you're still missing them for the first rows after your sub-headings. You seem to have extra column separators instead of row separators. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:50, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming URL in reference section when sourcing it

If you was to use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_desk for a source how would you make it be in the 'Reference' section not as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_desk but just as "Help Desk" but when you click it then it will take you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_desk, thank you.--Smashton Pumpkin (talk) 16:24, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Like this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_desk| Help desk] (shows up as Help desk). Why would you want to use the Help desk as a source? Or was that just an example? Howicus (talk) 16:29, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia "articles" should not be used as references per WP:CIRCULAR. That said, in general you'd format it thusly: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_desk Help Desk] would display "Help Desk". Though since it is an internal link you could instead just use [[Help_desk|Help Desk]] to achieve the same effect. Ideally you should use a space instead of the underscore as well. More info is available at Help:Link. DonIago (talk) 16:32, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was just using that as an example, sorry for the confusion. To make it more clear I went onto Google and typed in 'news' and the first link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-23662640 so if I wanted to make that "Erika Kacicova" in the reference box how do you do it and is there a bit of information on this, I'm not sure what it is called as its not shortening a URL, can you help me please thanks.--Smashton Pumpkin (talk) 17:30, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would use the full article title, so [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-23662640 Missing Erika Kacicova 'believed to be alive']Missing Erika Kacicova 'believed to be alive' --Redrose64 (talk) 18:29, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you use Template:Cite web, there are fields for url, title, publication date, access date, etc. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:38, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. There's also automated tools such as this one that can take a URL and generate the appropriate code automagically. DonIago (talk) 18:52, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    See more at Help:Link. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:53, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm getting a tad little bit confused now because on the Cite web page it is telling me to do a lot of {{ instead of just,[2] which is the best way to do it? I am confused between Template:Cite web, Citing_sources#Links and ID numbers, and Embedded citations - is it not just easier to put the ref bits and in the middle you put [ then the link and then a space then whatever you want it to go as then ]--Smashton Pumpkin (talk) 19:57, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The marks like [1] are created by <ref></ref>. Between the <ref> and the </ref> you put the information about the reference. In its simplest form, this would be the bare URL
    <ref>http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-23662640</ref>
but clearly you want to give that a meaningful title. The next simplest method is to use the square brackets that I mentioned earlier
<ref>[http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-23662640 Missing Erika Kacicova 'believed to be alive']</ref>
The techniques advised by others - using {{cite web}} or similar - add more flexibility but at the expense of being more difficult to understand. In this case you would use
    <ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-23662640 |title=Missing Erika Kacicova 'believed to be alive'}}</ref>
Use whichever one you feel most comfortable with. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:06, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Discussion separated from its article

Dear editors: This article: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/David Kaonohiokala Bray is really material that relates to the article David Kaonohiokala Bray which used to be on this page but was cut and pasted into mainspace. Should this discussion be moved to the article's talk page, and, if so, how would that be done? —Anne Delong (talk) 17:48, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't cut and pasted, it was moved from Wikipedia:Articles for creation/David Kaonohiokala Bray, & the history shows that, and thus traces back to those talk page comments. The original draft article should, of course, have been at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/David Kaonohiokala Bray instead of at Wikipedia:Articles for creation/David Kaonohiokala Bray. — Preceding unsigned comment added by David Biddulph (talkcontribs) 18:05, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear editors: The awards section of this article: Delhi in a Day is taken directly from this web site: [[3]]. Each line has an attribution. Since this is a list of the awards, in order, it's hard to say how much different it could be made. Is this a copyright violation? If so, perhaps the list should be removed, and just a sentence saying that the film has won multiple awards with a reference to the web site would be more appropriate. —Anne Delong (talk) 20:40, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Citations and Verification disclaimer

I'm new to Wikipedia so please forgive me if this question has already posted:

On my biography page there's a disclaimer from 2010 that reads as follows:

! This biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful. (March 2010)

Very recently I added numerous citations for verification -- one for each statement of fact -- so can the disclaimer now be removed? If so it would be much appreciated. Here is the link to the page:

    Wikipedia's responsibility to society

Whenever a serial killer is arrested , media gives huge coverage to the killer than doctors who treat poor patients for red cross. Whenever a shooter massacres innocent people in USA,he gets more coverage than Nobel prize winning scientists. Wikipedia is popular website. Killing innocent people is nothing great , only because media turns killers, rapists and 1940's mafia into cult figure , there is no need to keep pages dedicated to bad guys. The victims are forgotten and movies are made on the life of serial killers. Why should media decide who should get more coverage.Nobel prize winner for medicine or Monica Lewinsky who had no contribution to humanity. Those who own Wikipedia should honour great people like google doodle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TECHWIZARDEYT (talkcontribs) 03:40, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Once we start supplanting the judgement of reliable sources about whats important with our own, where do we stop? What other things will we not cover because they are bad, or we disagree with them? How could anyone take our articles seriously if, as a matter of policy, we said we are only going to cover things we want to encourage? Monty845 04:24, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the deletion criteria for Biomed Dispose It, I see that it was deleted not only for the copyright violation but also for being written in a promotional manner. If you copy material from a subject's own website, it is quite likely that it will be written in a manner which is too promotional for Wikipedia, so (independently of the copyright problem) it is better to write in your own words. - David Biddulph (talk) 07:19, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You still get the warning (or rather, the article still shows the warning) because nobody has removed it. If you are confident that you have addressed the problem, you may remove the warning. (From a quick look, I think you have addressed the problem. Many of the sources you have added are not substantial enough to contribute to notability, but they are fine for supporting the particular details about awards; but I think there are enough substantial sources to remove the warning. But to echo OrangeMike's question: your use of 'we' and your username suggests that you might be several people sharing an account (which is forbidden - see WP:ROLE) and/or have a conflict of interest.--ColinFine (talk) 13:44, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Determining first version equal to the current version.

If there is an article that has had a number of changes and reversions/rollbacks is there an easy way to find the first version which is equal to the given version? I can look back at the history and (fairly) easily see what the first revision was with that *size*, but then I need to check to see if the two are equal. Is there a tool that would do that for me?Naraht (talk) 14:48, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you know of two versions that are the same size, why not just use the radio buttons beside those revisions to directly compare them? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here. Dismas|(talk) 16:33, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two reasons, one, I may have made a mistake as to what was the first one at that size and secondly, to automate the concept. I'd love to have a tool that would enable me to say that for Article Blank, there hasn't been any changes other than changes and reverts for a given amount of time (and the number of cycles if possible). It seems useful in determining whether an article should be semi-protected.Naraht (talk) 16:54, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi,

I discovered that the above page referenced one of my inventions, namely my ‘Large Area Domain Viewer’ but I can’t seem to find my reference in the English version. You may wish to add my invention to your English page as it is a very useful device for visualizing larger magnetic domains in Silicon Steels and has become something of an industry standard.

I would point out however that the Polish page has got my name slightly wrong – it refers to me as ‘R.A. Taylor’ when I am in fact R.J. Taylor (reference 17).

In regards to your points, firstly there is no guarantee that an article in one language will exactly match another, in this case it apparently doesn't. Since you have a conflict of interest, asking here was a good start. I'd suggest writing a note on Talk:Magnetic domain and/or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Physics. In regards to the entry on the Polish page, I think you can change it yourself, but that needs to be in done in the text that contains the reference (not down in where the references are all shown).
Probably the easiest way to make sure that everything for it is shown correctly is if there is a doi for the article, if you have that, there are "bot"s that will look up everything and that should make sure everything is correct including your middle initial.Naraht (talk) 15:13, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Silly Page

The page “John W. Drake” (about me) contains many boring and numerous inaccurate statements, apparently misinformed but not malignant. In any case, a “John W. Drake” page is not needed, I am now retired, and I do not want to replace this entry with one of my own making. How can I delete the entry altogether? 157.98.66.27 (talk) 18:00, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your best bet is to go to the talk page of the article and point out the parts that are unsourced or objectionable. For such a short article there is always AfD where you can apply to have the article deleted. It would, however be deleted according to procedure if it is excessively poorly sourced or you lack notability. It would not be deleted on your request because you don't want an article for some reason. Britmax (talk) 18:12, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like all the sources are self-published (e.g., the website of the group he chaired a committee for) or non-independent primary sources (the famous paper). Dr Drake may not actually qualify for a separate article, if people haven't been writing about him rather than his work. User:KenBailey wrote the initial article and might know more about the possibility for finding independent, secondary sources. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Speedy deletion of an article

Yesterday I was watching the New pages feed on Wikipedia, and happened to see one that intrigued me. It was named Alen Ghouliance, and was tagged for speedy deletion as an A7: No explanation of significance. I did not agree with this assessment as the article clearly laid out reasons showing significance, so I contested the deletion nomination by clicking the designated button and explaining why I did not agree with the assessment.

I watched the article for a while and noticed that the tag was changed to: G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion, so I removed all content from the article that would lead someone to conclude that the article was promotional. I also added categories to help guide other editors to similar articles, and again contested the proposed speedy deletion.

This morning I was disheartened to see that the article had vanished. How can I find out why it was deleted despite my efforts?

Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 18:31, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Click on the red link that you have provided above, and you should get a pink box headed "A page with this title has previously been deleted." In that will be the deletion log entry, which shows who deleted it, when and why. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:41, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Having looked at the deleted article, I don't believe it qualified for G11. It wasn't neutral, but doesn't mean it met the criteria for speedy deletion for promotion (especially after your editing, Ottawa). I'm not entirely convinced by the A7 rationale either; their was a credible claim of notability, where the article stated that the subject "has received many awards for his contributions to Los Angeles County's legal services". Obviously, without knowing what awards and without reliable sources, this wouldn't stand up at AfD. However, that's not what the CSD covers; the claim (however unverified) is all that is sufficient. I'd suggest you contact User:Anthony Bradbury, the administrator who deleted the article. matt (talk) 20:49, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't Kozei Homi be named in the article as the prime suspect? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Japanesehelper (talkcontribs) 18:55, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You would be better off at the talk page of the article. The main reason is usually lack of reliable sources, or BLP concerns. Britmax (talk) 19:09, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Response to racist edits

Although I'm an experienced editor, I have a question about response to vandalism. An IP editor made an antisemitic edit to Thermonuclear weapon, implying that thermonuclear weapons were a Jewish plot (the intent is clear from the edit comment). I reverted it. I'd like to put a warning template on his Talk page so if he continues his bigoted edits he can be blocked, but I'm not quite sure what template I should use. Vandalism doesn't seem specific enough; his intent was not to vandalize per se. In fact his statement was even literally true, it was just the implication that was racist. Defamation doesn't seem to apply, because the subjects of his attack are dead. What should I put on his talk page? --ChetvornoTALK 19:14, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More generally, I'm not clear on how WP regards racist theories and hate speech in articles. There doesn't seem to be any explicit prohibition against these things, so I guess if they don't libel or defame living persons and are sourced, they could be included in WP articles as fringe theories? --ChetvornoTALK 19:03, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That implication is a little too mild to be called "hate speech", in my eyes, but not exactly appropriate. I'd recommend just letting him know how you feel on his talk page, without a tag. Might be enough. If he continues, you might go with the disruptive editing one. But, like you say, the statement is true, so I don't know. Maybe compromise and word the info into the article in a more neutral way. But if he insists on the implication, seems disruptive. InedibleHulk (talk) 19:14, August 13, 2013 (UTC)
Actually, looking it over, I can't see how it would be included in this context without being undue weight and POV. We have warnings for those, under "Adding promotions of objects or ideologies (also spam)", if you'd like. InedibleHulk (talk) 19:18, August 13, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I took your wise advice and just left him a note explaining why his edit was inappropriate. Hopefully it will get through. Thanks again. Cheers, ChetvornoTALK 20:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to show which page is which when using a footnote more than once?

For example on the page Themes_in_Nazi_propaganda in the References section:

    ^ a b Koonz, Claudia (2003). The Nazi Conscience. Harvard University Press. p. 20. ISBN 978-0-674-01172-4.

How do you know if a or b is on page 20 and is it possible to make say one to be one page and one another so you know which reference is which to say which page?

I'm aware of sfn but there is no option to on this as there is no Notes and References separation just References.--Smashton Pumpkin (talk) 20:18, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really understand the question...it seems to me that if a and b are both pointing to that citation than both should be on page 20. Otherwise there should be a separate citation for a different page number. Hope this helps. DonIago (talk) 20:27, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have a few ways to combat this problem. You can simply add the full citation 2 times by changing the REF TAG name parameter name="Koonz2003a ...This is the format used on the page already. There are other ways but they get more complicated. Not a big deal to list the same ref many times ...not harming anyone.

A simple way of doing this without creating duplicate references is to use the {{Rp}} template, which adds the page number after the footnote number. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:27, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Armenian genocide

    Armenian Genocide (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

    Hey,

In the article Armenian genocide, and under the tag Turkish nationalism, words like massacre and genocide were used without proper proof. They are such, such strong words that unless the events can be proven with factual and undeniable proof, I find it harassing. Unless you can give me convincing evidence of the Armenian genocide, I want the page removed, or at least edited in a less Euro-centric way that also takes into account the possibility of no genocide. I have been trying to write for that part, and all of my attempts were removed during editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.27.125.164 (talk) 20:41, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The systematic mass murder of Armenians carried out by the Ottoman Empire is a well-documented historical fact. If you find reality 'harassing', tough. That is your problem, not ours. Wikipedia does not distort historical fact to pander to the sensitivities of Turkish nationalism, or indeed to any other. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:48, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hey Andy,

I'd like to see those "good documents" from some other media perhaps, as this is not the place. All in all, I'd like the right to write about the possibility of no genocide with proper references under the title Armenian Genocide. If Wikipedia is the sort of online volunteer-based encyclopedia that welcomes all sorts of information without bias, so should my hypothesis be included. I won't be leaving this very easily. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.27.125.164 (talk) 21:03, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Our article cites the necessary sources. Articles are based on appropriate published material (in this case, largely academic scholarship), and not on 'hypotheses' of contributors. created a new page directly from the person I wrote it about, how do I show proof

I just created the wikipedia page for Oncue, a well known rapper from the northeast. Everything I wrote was in a letter from the head of his management team. I basically emailed his team volunteering to make his wikipedia page cause I saw that he didn't have one, and they were like ya here is what you can write down. So the information I wrote about him is basically directly from him. This is the most reliable information I could possibly have, but the site is still at risk of deletion because there is no way to adequately have a proper citation for this, or is there? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.59.47.32 (talk) 21:00, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia articles need to cite published reliable sources. So no, you can't use such material. If the rapper is sufficiently notable, such material will already exist - and if it doesn't exist, he doesn't meet our notability criteria. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:06, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Sun Plus

Evening! Here in the UK, some news websites have recently been putting up pay-walls to block free access to their content. The newest paper to join this The Sun, which has affected a large number of sources here. As I couldn't think of a more suitable place for this discussion, I thought I'd bring the discussion here for now. My first question is whether or not a location currently exists that lists Wikipedians who have access to pay-walled news sites to allow for source verification? For instance, if a user adds a Sun page as a source (still allowed according to WP:PAYWALL), do we have a directory of other editors who could verify this? If not, would setting such a WikiProject/directory up for this sort of thing a viable plan? I'm more than willing to help out with any legwork this may cause, and please do inform me if there's a more appropriate location for, or an ongoing discussion about, this subject. Thanks!  drewmunn  talk  21:19, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As WP:PAYWALL states, the best place to ask for help accessing paywalled material is Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request. Frankly though, there are relatively few circumstances where a tabloid source like The Sun should be cited anyway. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:28, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Sun is an excellent source for.... soccer scores. HiLo48 (talk) 03:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I literally can't see why I didn't notice that, I read the whole page… Anyway, thanks! As far as the validity of The Sun as a reference, I too try and steer clear of it. It's only because I blundered across an article including a reference to it already, and the status got me thinking. There are a few more reliable sources that are pay-walled now, such as The Times, and The Sun acted as more of a catalyst for thought that a genuine article of concern for me.  drewmunn  talk  09:18, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question title added. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 09:28, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you copied text from a copyright website, then Wikipedia will regard that text as a copyright violation unless the copyright owner explicitly licences it according to the procedure in WP:Donating copyright materials. If you own the copyright, then it is open to you to donate the text in that way, and that will clear the copyright problem. However, text from a subject's own website is usually not appropriate for a Wikipedia article, because text from the website is usually too promotional in tone. It is right and proper for the institution's own website to speak of it in a promotional tone, but Wikipedia requires neutral language.
In fact, if you are employed by the institute, you probably should not edit such an article at all, as you have a conflict of interest. Your best course is to find the multiple reliable sources, independent of the subject (such as newspapers or books) which discuss the institution in some depth, and request and article at requested articles. --ColinFine (talk) 10:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found his page, which had warnings across the top about not being enough citations to verify sources of information. I have been through it in some detail and added citations where I know them to apply. Have I done enough for this warning to be removed or do I need to do more? Adding "Authority control"

Dear Wikipedia Help Desk Team Editors:

An inquiry addressed to Wikipedia Information Team concerning "Authority control" responded with a referral to your department.

The EN, DE, ES Wikipedia articles about José Bernal require "Authority control" to provide easy access to readers doing research on this Cuban-American artist, 1925-2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Bernal, because there is a very large number of people named Jose Bernal, at least one Mexican artist and many other artists whose names include the name "Bernal."

The art of Cuban-American José Bernal, whose Wikipedia link is noted above, is published in books, articles, catalogs, monographs. Also, it is in 13 art museums, one in Spain and twelve in the U.S.A., and his artworks continue to be incorporated in art museum collections and museum exhibitions. Therefore it would be a significant and helpful addition to his EN, DE, ES articles to have "Authority control." Unfortunately, attempts to follow the guidelines in Wikipedia's "Authority control" link haven't been successful, even with assistance from Wikipedia volunteers and staff of the Smithsonian Institution. For this reason I seek assistance from the expertise of your Help Desk Team, as it was suggested by the Information Team. With appreciation for your consideration of this request, Ulla1540 (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Ulla1540[reply]

I have at times added {{Authority control}} to articles; it's quite straightforward, just a matter of searching the various databases and copying the identifiers into the template. But I have had no luck finding José Antonio Severino Bernal Muñoz in LoC, VIAF, ISNI or OGND. There are of course a lot of José Bernals, but I couldn't find one whose dates matched. He may just not be sufficiently well-known. Sorry about that, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 23:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blogs are almost never reliable sources, and the subject's own publications are not independent, and so are not regarded as adequate either for notability or for supporting content other than uncontroversial factual information. References are required to be inline to identify the information that they are supporting (see WP:Referencing for beginners). Finally, the "reported cases" that you have adduced almost certainly say nothing about the subject except that he represented certain parties. In order to have a Wikipedia article about a subject, there must be multiple reliable secondary sources, independent of the subject, which have written at length about the subject; so in this case it would require articles in books or journals written about Hanwant Mal Lodha. These do not have to be online, or in English, but they have to exist and be referenced in the article, otherwise the article fails to establish that the subject is notable (in Wikipedia's special sense) and the article will be deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 17:44, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How can I temporarily take down a wiki page that I published too soon? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.5.254.13 (talk) 19:13, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're the only contributor, you can just redirect the page to another relevant page (for example, redirecting a page about an album to the album's artist) or if you want it actually deleted you can put {{Db-g7}} at the top and an administrator will delete it shortly. Scarce2 (talk) 19:45, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could also, assuming that you have an account and Move rights, move it to a sandbox under your username and then have the redirect deleted. Dismas|(talk) 21:02, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a square of 4 images

Hi, I'm wondering how I would go about putting together 4 images into a square shape. I know how to put them all in a horizontal line, but I'd like it to be 2 on top, then 2 on the bottom. All I should need is the template. Thanks! Delaywaves • talk 00:58, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Something like this, perhaps?
Hope that helps, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 01:10, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can make your own table like above. {{Image array}} or {{Photomontage}} are also possible, depending on the formatting you want. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:18, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That photo montage looks perfect! I have two questions. First, do you know if I could somehow put the caption more "inside" the box?
    Example caption
I inserted the montage that I'm planning, and as you can see, the caption is sort of off to the side, as opposed to inside the box like a normal thumbnail photo. Secondly, do you know how to align the photo on the right side of the page? Delaywaves • talk 01:46, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Example caption
I think it's mainly intended for infoboxes. If that's not how you want to use it then the source shows some undocumented parameters. Here I used | text = Example caption | position = right. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:28, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Works perfectly! Thank you very much. Delaywaves • talk 15:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Convert weights to stone?

How common is it for people to report their weight in stones? Is this something that we should be adding to infoboxes for people's weight? If so, what if they are American or of some other nationality that doesn't use stones on a regular basis? I realize that we used both feet and meters or pounds and kilos but since stones are so limited in their acceptance/use. Dismas|(talk) 03:46, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are only three countries in the world which haven't officially metricated, the USA, Libya and Burma. As you say, the US doesn't use stones. Libya and Burma are not primarily English speaking countries. I see no place for conversions to stones. HiLo48 (talk) 03:58, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a difference between being "officially metricated" and the old units being out of use. Many British people still describe their weight in stones, though I don't know what statistics are available on the proportion who do so. As is mentioned in the article on stones, the unit is still used in Britain to describe the weight of such sportsmen as boxers and jockeys, and it is similarly used for oarsmen at Henley Royal Regatta. Whether it should be used in an infobox probably depends on the context. - David Biddulph (talk) 04:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience British people measure their weight either in Kg or in stones and pounds, never just in pounds. So I would say that this is an example of WP:ENGVAR: if there is reason to give the weight of a British person (which there hardly ever will be, apart from certain sports) it should be in Kg and stones/pounds. -- ColinFine (talk) 10:05, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An annoyance (to British ears) of the film Bridget Jones's Diary was the way she reported her weight in pounds only, rather than stones and pounds (as I believe she did in the original book). AndrewWTaylor (talk) 10:54, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While correcting some cut and paste moves, I came across this article: Guy Huygens. Multiple accounts are perfectly acceptable if they are correctly used. Many Wikimedia employees have multiple accounts to differentiate work edits from hobby contributions. Similarly, you may choose to have one account that focusses on a specific area, and another on a different area. However, it is usually good form to note that you have another active account on each of the user accounts' home page. See WP:SOCK#LEGIT for information on this. However, if the multiple accounts are used to evade sanctions or guidelines, as seems to be the case here (after a cursory glance through), then it is simple sock-puppetry. For information on how to handle a possible case of sock-puppetting read the guidelines on the topic. There are range of tools and methods that may help you, and a range of more knowledgable sock-puppet investigators to help if you want assistance. Finally, apply the duck test: "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck". In this case, if they look like a sock-puppet, they probably are!  drewmunn  talk  07:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking rather than just going ahead and doing it. The guideline is WP:Conflict of interest. It's probably better for you not to do it, but to put in a request at WP:Requested articles; but if you do some of the legwork by finding the multiple substantial references in independent reliable sources vthat are required to establish notability, that may make your request more attractive to a potential editor. --ColinFine (talk) 10:08, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Citation template markup format

Hi, I'm a fairly experienced editor but I have a question about citation templates. In the page markup I usually put separate template fields on separate lines to make the markup more readable:

    <ref>{{cite book
      | last =
      | first =
      | title =
      . . .
     }}</ref>

rather than <ref>{{cite book | last = | first = | title = . . . }}</ref> I've never noticed any difference in the operation of the template between these two formats. However, a while ago someone said not to do that; he said something about the page couldn't be searched properly if the fields were on separate lines. I can't remember where I read this, and I couldn't find anything in the help pages about it. So I thought I'd check with you experts. Is there anything wrong with breaking the citation template between separate lines? Thank you for your help. --ChetvornoTALK 08:03, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The only possible reason of the top of my head that this could cause an issue would be with the line numbers on revisions, although these rarely make sense anyway. I personally find that placing each parameter of different lines makes it a bit harder to tell where you are in the source, as finding distinct paragraphs can be harder. However, I understand the reasons behind it, and respect them also. If you do find that there is a viable reason for you not to place them across lines, maybe look into the ProveIt tool, which give you a bit of a more intuitive interface to work from with sources.  drewmunn  talk  08:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When I have come across this style of formatting in a page I have been editing, I have been grateful. It makes it much easier to spot where the main text resumes after the </ref> tag. I shall consider using it myself. Maproom (talk) 13:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's how I feel; a chunk of markup with a lot of "horizontal" format citation templates is almost unreadable. But a lot of editors feel differently, and will actually come along and change the format of my citation templates to the more compact "horizontal" format. However the ProveIt bot that Drewmunn suggested above looks like it might be a big help. I'm going to give it a try. Thank you both for the courteous help! Updating company logo with new version? I am stuck!

    Dear Wikipedia

I represent the Australian International School in Singapore. We have recently changed the school logo but the Wikipedia page for the school is still showing the old crest, I can't for the life of me work out how to update this - it's important to us that people see the new logo (we've had a few cases recently of outside providers coming in to present to us, and they have lifted the old logo fromt the Wikipedia page assuming it is still current).

You may check our website www.ais.com.sg to verify this information.

If you could update the page with the new logo or give me simple instructions on how I might go about that I would be very grateful.

    Kind regards

Claire Ettinger Communications Manager — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ais singapore (talkcontribs) 10:55, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Claire. First off, you should change you user name. Names that suggest a user represents and is working on behalf of an organisation are not allowed. Secondly, you should read WP:IMAGES and WP:UPLOAD for instructions on how to upload images. Only confirmed users can do so. Your account will be auto-confirmed after four days and ten edits, or you can ask for immediate confirmation. I can't find the link for that ATM but I'm sure someone else will shortly. As I assume the school will want to maintain copyright control of the image, it should be uploaded to en:Wikipedia itself, and not to the Wiki Commons. I hope that helps. Rojomoke (talk) 12:56, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To enlarge on what Rojomoke said, it should probably be uploaded to Wikipedia because we're guessing the School will not want to licence it, so it will need to be uploaded according to the very restrictive rules for using non-free content. Note that you (and the school) do not have control of the article itself, and indeed you are discouraged from editing it (though updating the logo will be fine). Please see WP:Conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 16:22, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Conflict of Interest, Company Article

DISCLOSURE: I am an employee of the United Hospital Fund, and I am seeking to help correct inaccuracies on the article about this company.

The United Hospital Fund (UHF) is a nonprofit health policy research organization in New York City. I am an employee of UHF, and I recently noticed that someone created an article about UHF that contains numerous inaccuracies. I have set up a user account to correct these inaccuracies and suggest more relevant content.

I want to be very careful to follow WP’s COI guidelines. Following the advice on the COI page and other helpdesk/forum discussions on company articles, here are the steps I’ve taken so far:

    • Read up on COI policy, WP:BFAQ, and other relevant guidelines.
    • Created an identity and user page indicating my employment at UHF.
    • On the Talk page of the article on UHF, pointed out the inaccuracies and suggested broad changes.
    • Left a related note on the Talk page of the user who created the page and wrote the article. (No response.)
    • On a subpage of my user page, drafted an updated article on UHF, following WP’s guidelines on NPOV, notability, sources, etc.
    • Disclosed my relation to the subject at every step.

I’d now like to ask for the attention and advice of experienced editors and the community at large. Is it appropriate to ask a neutral editor to review what I’ve put together on the subpage of my user page? Other suggestions on what I should be doing next?

Relevant pages are linked to above; the subpage where I’ve drafted additional language about UHF is here: User:Miles_at_UHF/draft_updates_on_United_Hospital_Fund.

Thanks very much for your help.

Um, Wow. If every person who wanted the wikipedia page about their company/organization improved did what you have done, I'd die happy and think Jimbo Wales would be promoted to God. Having said that, there a *few* *minor* comments on the proposed new article.
    • I see that you used the old *further reading* as a reference, I know you said the old reference 1 was not useable in the new version of the article, is the old reference 2?
    • You may want to look at {{cite doi}} and {{cite pubmed}} for the references out of journals, that way all that needs to be in the article is the doi or pubmed and the information is pulled by a "bot" from databases with that information in it (and it only has to exist in one place even if multiple articles use it.
However *both* issues can be dealt with after the new information has been placed there. You may also want to put a message on User talk:Kipd letting him know since he started the article back in 2010 and contributed the most to it. If no one more experienced has copied this over within a day or so or raised a *significant* objection, I'll move it as soon as I can.Naraht (talk) 18:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found an incorrect information in your website....

    To Whom It May Concern

Firstly, I would like to show my respect for your managing this valuable website. My name is Hyewon Yang. I am a student and a member of the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) in Korea. VANK is a non-government, volunteer organization, composed of students ranging from elementary school to college and adults who wish to tell correct information about Korea to foreign textbooks and publishing companies.

I would like to inform you that your website includes information that seriously distort image of Korea and that could develop into diplomatic problem between Korea and Japan. We Koreans were surprised to see that your website marks Korea’s island Dokdo as Liancourt Rocks. Please refer to this link of your website: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ks.html

The name Liancourt Rocks is originated from France’s whaling vessel Le Liancourt that discovered Dokdo in 1849. Even though Korea, with sovereign control over the island, uses an official name “Dokdo,” temporary term named by French ship is used by your institution and is spreading globally. This is a big problem as people throughout the world recognize “Liancourt Rocks” as standard name.

Now, you might wonder why Korea is so sensitive about the correct name of Dokdo.

Dokdo is one of the most loved islands in Korea and is Korea’s one of major fishing grounds. In addition, Ulleungdo near Dokdo is the global tourist site. For instance, in 2010, world famous travel magazine, announced that Korea’s Ulleungdo is one of the best recreational site chosen by world’s tourists. According to this magazine, Ulleungdo offers spectacular scenery, preserving the nature from ancient times, and has abundant source of water unlike other islands; neighboring waters, with Dokdo, is the biggest fishing ground in the East Sea. On clear days, Dokdo can be seen from Ulleungdo with naked eye. Historically, for 1500 years, Ulleungdo and Dokdo were referred to as the island of mother and son, which indicates its important close relationship.

Therefore, your institution calling this domestically and internationally crucial island “Liancourt Rocks” will confuse many foreigners and ships visiting Ulleungdo and Dokdo. In addition, your institution might be responsible for physical and mental damage done to Koreans. Above all things, negligence of the term “Liancourt Rocks” would build uncomfortable feelings from Koreans toward your institution and country, and this would become an obstacle to our countries’ friendship.

As a member of VANK, I request that your institution use “Dokdo” instead of “Liancourt Rocks” in all parts of the website that provides information of Korea. For more information on geographical designation of Dokdo in Korean tourist guidebook, visit this website: http://prkorea.com/tour/img/dokdo.gif

We know that your website is putting much effort in understanding other cultures, countries, and designations in this global, informational 21st century. Particularly, your website is contributing towards many people’s correct understanding of other countries’ geographical names and cultures.

We hope you listen to our request kindly.
